From Here To There

Run smiles and nods "thank you miss we will wait till this thing lands" he walks back to Deziarra and sits down next to her "she says we will talk to the owner when the shuttle lands" he looks out the window and smiles thinly "that looks cool".

He starts fiddling with his tool belt again pulling random things out and putting them in different places and pulls out a small bar of food "how long has this been in here" he opens it and takes a bit "hmm a long time it seems" he puts the rest back in the tool bar.

As they got closer to the crater more details of the space station could be made out. It was small for a space station, about the size of a three story hotel, but it did not need to be that large. Just large enough to keep the people inside reasonably satisfied as they traveled from here to there. Traffic to this part of the asteroid belt in the Moriva system was not too heavy. Even the presence of The Travelling Carnival increased traffic only slightly. Most of the people on board were simply passing through, on their way to other destinations in the Moriva system and elsewhere.

As the ship pulled into the docking bay the middle aged woman announced, "This is our final stop. All passengers must leave the ship. Repeat, this is our final stop. All passengers must leave the ship."

Rin and Deziarra remained seated and kept their eye on her until they were the only three on board. She motioned for them to come.

"Follow me," said the middle aged woman.

She led them through a series of corridors until they reached an overweight middle aged man who stood there waiting for them. He was also humanoid in appearance with white hair and was dressed in some sort of business suit. Although it gave no indication of rank, did not it was clear from the way he was treated that he was the owner.

"I understand you are offering to fix my ship," he said.

Rin nods "yes sir we can, but i will need some time with the engine, just me and my second" he motions at Deziarra. He pulls out the sheet of paper "this is just some rough ideas and stuff from listening and the feel of this thing" he gulps and hands it to the owner.

The owner laughs "wow this is very pricey, maybe if you go check it will be less expensive for you two" he looks at them "go and have a look now, my second over there will show you the way" he points at the woman from before.

She smiles "this way please" she starts walking towards a door, Rin quickly follows her.

Deziarra followed both of them. The room was fairly empty except for what appeared to be an old fashioned card table in the center of the room. She guessed this was their planning room. It was not meant to be luxurious. All they needed were some basic items to keep them comfortable while they planned. The middle aged woman turned on the light.

"Please be seated," she said. "You can look at the engine here. Once it has cooled down you can see it for yourself. The items you requested will be provided for you, most of them anyway. For the more expensive items, we will see if we can find a safe replacement. We will listen to any additional input you might have."

In the center of the card table was a monitor Deziarra had not noticed before. The camera was focused on the rapidly cooling engine and offered options for rotating the camera, zooming in and out, and looking at different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. The middle aged woman left the room leaving Rin and Deziarra to continue planning.

"At least this company knows how to prioritize," said Deziarra sitting in one of the chairs and looking at the engine with infrared.

Rin laughs "yea this is ok, i love the feel of the engine i'm looking at so i can hear its voice" he looks closely at the screen "seems like my preliminary evaluation was correct".

He sighs a bit and looks at her "it's just old and needs a tune up, i was hoping for something a little more exciting than that" he goes back to the screen "wait a minute" he rotates the camera showing that the engine was cracking quite badly down the side and back "this is bad we will need to get more equipment for this and it should be allowed to fly till we fix it, hell by the look of it, the engine should have exploded a while ago".

Deziarra zoomed in on the still microscopic crack and examined it in infrared and visible light. She could see Rin was right. The crack could widen at any moment.

"It might be better for them to simply get a new engine," she said. "Safety is too important to be compromised, budget or not. Perhaps we could find another use for the engine. One that does not put numerous people in danger."

Rin smiles happily "oh no, i will repair it and it will be better than a new engine" he stands and makes a fist pumping motion. He starts mumbling to himself and sits back down looking at the monitor his eyes fix his mouth moving at incredible speed with little to sound sound coming out.

He smiles and stops still looking at the screen "it will take about 5 hours, if we have all the correct equipment and parts" he smiles madly his hair in his face "this will be fun".

"well lets see if we can go down and repair it already" he was acting like a child who wanted to play with its new toy, he gets the rest of the bar from before and finishes the out of date food.

"It looks like it is cool enough," said Deziarra.

Remembering where the ship was, the two of them walked back to it. Except for themselves, only members of the company remained. Workers were constantly walking in and out, delivering the parts Rin had requested while the owner stayed next to the engine and supervised their activities. The middle aged woman arranged the parts they had gathered into some sort of order.

"Are there any additional parts you need?" asked the owner.

he shakes his head and smiles "no i don't think so anyway" he walks to the engine "where to start, where to start" he turns to Deziarra "lets start with those crack".

The owner looks at him "crack?"

Rin nods "yea there is a crack but it can be fixed easily" he looks around "welder, welder were is that welder" he checks his tool belt "i could of put it in here".

The middle aged woman looked shocked "why is the welder in there?"

Rin look away still searching "i like technology where ever i find it, and i liked the welder"

"The crack is microscopic at the moment," explained Deziarra but it could grow at any time.

The workers, five in all, stopped bringing stuff in and stood at attention, ready to assist. The middle aged woman continued to sort the items they had brought while Deziarra examined them to make sure they were in working order. The owner wiped the sweat off his face and looked at the engine with some concern.

Rin smiles "I FOUND IT" he laughs loudly startling a few of the crew, "HAHA LETS GET TO WORK" he laughs more and gets one of the wielder helmets and slides it on "you guys need one of these or leave this area".

he looks at the crack "first this little thing" he lights the wielder and and gets a piece of metal "Deziarra can you start working on the other components please"

"I'll get to work on it," Deziarra assured him as she made sure her own wielder helmet was in place.

From her previous examination of the engine and their notes, she knew which parts of the engine were causing problems. She went to work repairing and replacing vital parts starting with the most critical. It looked like things were going to work out after all but what she did would only offer a temporary solution. The crack in the engine needed to be fixed.

Rin works on the crack and smiled under the wielder helmet and slowly closes the crack making sure it was filled full and wouldn't crack again. He swore loudly and looks down at the burn in his trousers just inches from his leg, he laughs loudly "THAT WAS SO CLOSE".

He starts working again muttering stuff and yelling "COME ON BABY" at the engine as he slowly worked on the crack

Over the next hour, they continued to make slow and steady progress. The crack was sealed, broken parts were fixed, unfixable parts were replaced, and the entire engine was vigorously cleaned by the workers once the seal was dried.

"It looks fixed, but the only way to know for sure is to actually test it out," said Deziarra.

The workers nodded in agreement.

Rin smiles "that is true, i'll stay here and check on it soeone needs to go and power the ship up" he strokes the engine and smiles slightly, there was a lot of holes i his trousers where metal had burned through.

He look at the engine "its better than a new one and a lot cheaper" he looks at the others "ready to try this baby out" he had a really psychotic grin.

The middle aged man and woman looked at each other and nodded. The workers got on board and started cleaning the interior. The middle aged woman joined them.

"I think it is time to take this ship on a test flight," said the owner following them onto the ship. "Would you like to come with us? It is free of charge, of course."

"I have nothing else to do at the moment," Deziarra replied stepping on board.

Rin smiles and nods "there is nothing else to do so lets go for it and try out the new engine on this shuttle" he was extremely happy that he could call it a shuttle because of his handle work.

He slowly walks onto the ship a mumbles "fly well" he pats the side of the shuttle when he enters an laughs "lets get this baby up in the sky"

Once everyone was on board and secure, the shuttle took off for its test flight. They began the test with some basic 3-D turns among the various asteroids. Next they went outside the system to test how the shuttle functioned at high speeds. Only a faint hum could be heard from the engines that even normal background noise from a full shuttle would easily drown out.

"So far, so good," said Deziarra.

Rin nodded in agreement and listens to the engine "hmmm just a slight hum now" he looks over at Deziarra and smiles "thanks this was an interesting thing to do, glad you talked me into it"

"this should be able to go on for quite a few more years then the engine will need to be repaired again or replaced"

"Yes, but they can worry about that when the time comes," said Deziarra.

They finished the test run without any problems and landed the shuttle in the same place where they started. As the workers and the middle aged woman left the ship, the owner approached Rin and Deziarra.

"Thank you so much for fixing my shuttle!" he exclaimed. "If there is anything you would like in return, just name it. Unless it is something unreasonable, I will give it to you."
