General Purpose/Utility Mecha?

Is there a general purpose mecha or power armor? Something that wasn't built specificially for combat? Even military outfits have non-combat utility vehicles, Jeeps for instance.

What I'm thinking of is something along the lines of a powered Hazmat suit for operating in dangerous or airless enviroments. Something like the Power Loader from Aliens but with an airtight cockpit and something more useful than forklifts on the ends of the arms. A powered armor without stealth gear, a basic communications package, a utility arm with a built-in toolbox and maybe a holdout energy weapon for emergency defense. There's a call for that sort of thing, I'm sure.

Say a section of hull was blown open during ship-to-ship combat, decompressing a corridoor on the crew quarters level. Airlocks activate, preventing decompression from damaging the surrounding rooms and corridoors, thereby trapping off-duty personel in their quarters and keeping on-duty personel from sleeping in their own beds. After the danger has passed, the problem needs to be fixed. Obviously it would fall to the technical staff to repair it, but do they just throw on a spacesuit and weld the breach together somehow? Or do they climb into a Kylie and graft a spare section of hull over the gap?

Maybe I just need to go over the mecha listings and ship specs again. In any case, my character has just been approved, so this is my first 'official' posting as a cast member. =P Someone remind me to get a avatar sometime.

In the Destiny such a role would be handled by the alpha and beta construction drones, that are detailed under the Hephaestus Fleet Yards. They have the capacity to mend, lift and to rescue if needed, using graviton beams and arc-welders.

QIS had used striped down military suits for that kinda job if a person is needed for the repairs, but I can't really thing of a time when the ship wouldn't be able to just fix itself anyways if a person was not present.

My question wasn't pointed at the Destiny directly, although my reading has brought me across the drones. But the Destiny isn't the only ship out there.

Uso, I think the main circumstance in which a ship wouldn't be able to repair itself in this: When the systems that do the repairs are the systems that are damaged. Or if your sensors aren't running properly, you end up with misdiagnosed damage.

For now though, I feel my questions have been answered. Thank you both for your time. =)

Well if the sensors are damaged then a person wouldn't know where to go repair the ship unless they got lucky and stumbled across it. As for the repair systems, almost all of them I've seen used on this site are self repairing.

Yeah, but that's not standard on any ships but military ships. To something like a cargo ship or a repair yard, this would be very useful, indeed.

The NDI employs a variant of the M2 GOLEM armor called the MACE (Mobile Armored Combat Engineer). Instead of the standard array of weapons systems, it wields a nanolathe and a powerful plasma torch for cutting and whatnot. It's comparable to a SCV from Starcraft, except a lot more mobile and it can defend itself pretty well if it has to.

This is a thread that I'd seen a few times in my necro-sweep and finally decided to comment on. Basically because of the fact that mecha might not be the utter most efficient at warfare (situational machines normally aren't), but in terms of first-response and common work? I could see the personable degrees that mecha has (similar to Power Armor, obviously) and imagine that in the civilian field it's likely to see them for enthusiasts as well as an "upgrade" alternative to power-armor for if they need something with a human form to operate.

Nothing like inspiring hope than a big hand pulling you out of a burning building or helping fix a building, right?
