Summary
Am I correct to assume that the fact that your own gravity shields are immune to the weapon is meant to be both a tactical advantage (ships in staggered formations can fire through eachother without worry), and a massive Achilles heel if the technology was ever captured?

Yes, although the immunity is dependent upon the strength, mainly meant to keep from destroying a friendly ship that happen to get in the way. And yes it would be an Achilles heel if reversed engineered.
