OOC Nepleslian Military Character Creation & Tips

Hello.

This page is a dedicated forum resource for any and all players interested in making a Nepleslian (faction) character, especially one in the Star Military. Characters in the faction can be almost any race, as you can see from the CCG Page. You can also choose to create a Jiyuuian volunteer or almost any other race. A list of wiki links and helpful information will be provided as well as character creation tips from Nepleslian GMs. This page may not be as useful for players wishing to create Nepleslians (species) who aren't going to be from the faction.

But before I go into this stuff, here is a list of people in Nepleslia who are usually happy to be bugged with questions. Subject to change. You can find all of them on the IRC and through Forum Private Messages.

Stage 1: Choosing A Plot
Since you have already decided to make a character for Nepleslia (the faction), it has been found that most people find it very easy to start by choosing which plots you want to be involved with first. There are three advantages to this.

1) It helps refine the desired aspects for your character
2) It gives you a specific GM to work with for your character creation; your personal assistant in some ways.
3) Many plots will have open or wanted positions which can help you decide how to finalize your character.

Here's the List of Active Plots.

Stage 2: Creating Your Character
Here's the fun part but it can be confusing and daunting. So here's a list of steps, in an order which usually works out well.

1) First, let's figure out WHAT your character is. We're going to skip the physical characteristics, personality and background stuff for now. I find it more helpful to define what your character can do and then return to these personal details. However, if you have an idea for any of these sections, by all means, go ahead and write them in first. We're going to assume you're making a Marine but a lot of it carries over to the Navy.

Use the Character Template
2) Since we're assuming that your character is a Marine, use the Marine Skills page.

Pay attention to the four required skills for all Marines. These are listed under the Basic Skills header. Their descriptions are done in a way that should be fairly easy to copy, paste and then edit to your own satisfaction. Don't copy, paste and leave it as is. It won't work well.

2A) If you've gotten your GM's permission to make a specialist character (medic, sniper, demolitions, etc), there are more skills farther down. Check those out. Make sure your GM has approved the idea. No point making a medic when the GM already has five medics, right?

3) This should leave you with 2 or 3 extra skill slots. Go to the normal Skills Page to see what other stuff you can add to make your character more interesting, unique, or quirky. Or completely average and otherwise unremarkable. This is where your imagination and creativity can roam freely. You can also find more cookie-cutter descriptions for your Nepleslian Marine below.

4) Now let's get back to the nitty-gritty details of WHO your character is.

Physical characteristics. Pretty much whatever you want. If you're interested in having cybernetics, talk to your GM and fellow players for what might be appropriate. If your character is female, here's a handy measurements generator.

Personality. Again, it's something you gotta come up with. I can't help you create this if you don't know what you want.

Background. This is an important section because it defines your character's life up until this point in time.

Nepleslians come from all walks of life; urban, agrarian, rich, poor, educated, uneducated, even cloned or naturally birthed. It is as diverse as you can imagine, if not more so. For the most, I cannot tell you what should happen in your character's life. Each person goes through their own journey and its up to you to craft it.

Here's a few links to help you with the context of the setting.
- The Timeline of Major Events - Note: Nepleslia gained independence 6 (six) In-Character years ago.
- A list of planets currently or formerly owned by Nepleslia - Helpful for choosing a home planet
- A Guide to Nepleslian Culture - Has a lot of useful information on what your character would know growing up.

5) Your character's rank is usually going to be Private 3rd Class (P3C) unless you have worked something out with your GM. For the Star Military's ranks, see this Page.

6) This is the last part. Your character's inventory. What he or she has depends on their service branch but everything's listed on one page for you convenience. Each section has a coding frame for you to copy, paste and edit. Make sure you edit because your male character could end up with a bikini swim suit. Feel free to add some personal effects from home or any other sort of purchases your character might make. You start with 6000DA so if you want to buy stuff, just ask your GM for price estimates.

Stage 3: Congratulate Yourself
You're pretty much done. Just post it in the New Characters Forum and wait for approval. Check regularly because people may make suggestions or comments.

If you have any feedback on the character creation process or if this guide was (or was not) helpful, I would love to hear it either in this thread or any other way. Nothing is perfect but we must consistently strive for improvement.
