You know, of all the recent, long (more than 100 episodes) animes that I've seen, One Piece has definitely got to be the best one. It has a lot of foreshadowing, the land they're in actually matters, the characters have more purpose than just fighting (one's a doctor, one's a chef, the other's a navigator), they never stop using moves even when they learn new, better ones, and there's a lot of genuinely funny parts and ongoing gags. Not to mention it's extremely original in it's setting, character designs, powers and story.

I recommend watching it. I started watching it from episode 1 about two months ago, and I don't regret it.

Out of the three major anime, I couldn't really get behind One Piece. I didn't really like any of the characters and those that annoyed me are beloved so ya.

The art also kind of annoyed me, like there is no consistent art for the characters kind of bugged me.

Considering its popularity in its home country though, I'd say it's like their Bugs Bunny.

Well, so far Naruto has had shitloads of plot holes, as well as Bleach. Or so I've heard.

Either way, I've seen at least the first few 80 episodes of Naruto, and they haven't been half as satisfying as One Piece. Also, Naruto has TOO MANY FILLER EPISODES! There's almost an entire season that has nothing to do with the main storyline and only add contradictions that conflict with the canon storyline, thus hampering the series as a whole.

Bleach eventually just turned into DragonBall Z with another name. When it stopped being about the different kinds of swordsmen, the anime just started going downhill as far as I'm concerned. And I've heard horrible things from people that watched Bleach (and are now turning it down) from how bad it's getting. Also, lots of filler.

One Piece, on the other hand, paces it's fillers. Instead of adding a whole bunch of extra episodes until the manga catches up, they foresee that happening and add some few filler episodes within a season. They also add more events within a canon episode and can instead focus on the main storyline while lengthening the anime so that the manga has time to catch up to it while they're still making the last manga chapters that came out.

As for the characters, Ussop is my favorite character and he's the weirdest looking. Yes, he's generally considered the comedic relief character, but he's also a character that you can identify with because he's normal. He's just like if you and me go together with a band of superhuman mofos that can kill dinosaurs with their hands. But Ussop is quick-witted and resourceful, so he does have his purpose in the crew. And he also ends up being one very fearsome dude eventually.

The other characters are fun to watch too. Luffy is always having fun or kicking ass. Tony Tony Chopper is cute-looking. Nami is always bringing conflicts regarding money, and tends to break up Zoro and Sanji who are always bickering. For some reason I find Nico Robin to be hot... and... I dunno. The story is just very well thought-out, the places they go through are memorable, the progress they achieve is meaningful (the new bounties they get basically reflect their strength, and their bounty goes up every time they beat a story arch boss).

Most of all, characters who are seen at the very beginning and are dismissed as characters that were only meant to be part of a particular part of the story can re-emerge later on with newly acquired powers, weapons or allies and become part of the story later on. No character around which there was a plot at some point is simply dismissed. They usually come back later on in the series to see what has happened to them, etc...

Finally, as for the art style... I can agree that sometimes it seems a bit out of place, but in a way it's what makes it different to the other animes. This anime tries to break anime cliches, and that's what I love about it. They make lots of jabs at anime constants. Like, someone tries to make a fancy exit with an explosion, and when the explosion clears up the guy's on the floor sizzling, etc... In a way, I think that the art style the creator went with was a way to jab at anime cliches as well. The same way people in real life don't have to look good to kick ass, the same way people in One Piece could look like garbage but be honorable warriors, or people to be feared or simply just nice.

I think it's the same reason why there are so many weird yet cool powers in the series. Think about it, the LEAST power you could think of for a protagonist of a series would be elasticity powers. There are several other powers in the series that, while sound stupid, are actually feasible in practice. One guy is the best batter in the world. There's a guy that can turn into smoke and control it. There's even a dude which's only power is to turn his limbs into springs. And yet, all of those three powers are actually extremely formidable when you see them being used.

The way I see it, Eiichiro Oda got tired of all these animes where everyone important is either 'good looking' or has seldom to zero physical flaws. He got tired of 'awesome, edgy' powers like 'controlling the darkness' or 'using obscure weaponry'. He got tired of all the characters you get to see only once and then they're gone, never to have trained harder to best the protagonist. He got tired of places that are there for decoration, which's existence might as well be null because the place has little to no impact to the storyline.

People don't have to look good to kick your ass. The geography of the world conspires against you. The characters have a purpose. They have variety.

Unlike many other animes, One Piece's world is alive.

-looks up at the wall of text- Holy shi...! I did that!?

Well, I'm not going to go to that lengths to argue over a topic about one show.

Bleach and Naruto are more grounded into reality and therefore probably why I like them better. Naruto especially has fewer bs plot devices than Bleach pulls, but Bleach takes place in our world (for the most part). One Piece they eat a demon fruit for super powers. This means not everyone can be awesome, but believe me I understand that OP has done things to keep characters relevant, but also hard to imagine if I was to jump into the world what kind of character would I make? More than anything a person who ate demon fruit, or some shape shifting animal (since he apparently is very popular as well).

Naruto actually matured while Bleach is still a kids show, I think people who hate on it really just grew up. Seriously just watch is as a "it's so bad it's good" and you would be laughing at it. Bleach is related to wrestling in that way.

Hmm, kind of like the three kingdoms of anime they each balance each other out. In the end remember they are kids shows, we should be watching more mature shows like Full Metal Alchemist, Eden of the East, or Bacciano.

DBZ clone are awesome, seen Sengoku Basara? Just don't watch season 2.

Well, first of all, I'd say that's actually better. Whereas in other series they either have powers or they don't, in One Piece the characters always have the potential of gaining new powers if they decide to eat Devils Fruits. Also, the problem with the devil fruits is that, while you gain inhuman powers, you also become susceptible to the sea, meaning you cannot swim in a world which is easily 85% to 90% surface salt water. You also become vulnerable to kairoseki (sea stone; it has the same 'energy' as the sea), which makes you a target to anyone that have kairoseki weapons.

So having a devil fruit can be useful sometimes, but it can also be detrimental. And anyone with a devil's fruit is crazy if they're going to venture off on their own without having at least one crew member that hasn't eaten a devil's fruit. Also, Zoro is always the second strongest guy in the Straw Hat Pirates next to Luffy, and he doesn't have a devil's fruit power, so not having a devil's fruit power doesn't mean you can't still beat people that do. You can still be awesome without devil's fruits, you just have to be creative about it.

By the way, shape shifting animals are also animals who ate devil's fruits.

Anyway, One Piece is a kid's show too, for the most part. Almost no one dies in the series (they're constantly surviving extremely lethal shit), and the anime is hardly goresome or philosophically serious and such. But it's really a fun to watch anime. I have yet to hear of a single person that started watching it looking past the 'weird animation and character designs' that has quit watching the series.

Unlike Bleach and Naruto.

I love this discussion we are having SentientRace, maybe we can have a thread about anime that we can't fanboy rage against each other. Maybe about an anime that no one really knows about right off the top of their anime list, like Angel Beats or Bacciano!

And here comes a block of text, as I compare them as fairly as I can!

One Piece - a show about a hyperactive kid looking for his dad's (which I assumed from the start) treasure which happens to be the show's namesake (which also sounds like a Galatic Layline, or a Vault of some kind) who on the way gathers a pirate crew to find the One Piece only to be distracted by islands and their problems along the way. The super power of the show is Devils Fruits, which give awesome powers with a couple of setbacks that prevent them from flying everywhere.

Characters are inconsistent and are hardly pirates, but this also makes them unique and lovable especially when they do change over a long period of time in the show. It's a show that requires the viewer to be able to invest time for the long run to enjoy, something that personally I couldn't do since I couldn't stand the characters. The science of the powers was also non-existant making my logical thought processors to blow out. The "Not Dead Actually" drama is also very annoying, just like DBZ it was annoying when they drama'ed over dead people they could resserect with Namic DB's.

Bleach - a show about a highschool student who is also a spirit talker type, but after touching a soul he was thrust into the world of the spirit world first by a soul reaper who had to give her power to him for both to survive. Later he is infected by mario-ites when he has to go save girls from another castle. Super powers consiste of manipulating spirit energy, concentrating enough allow for certain abilities, and even greater super powers are based on character's personality. The cast is huge and full of likeable characters, each of them a badass.

Granted the show does have limited appeal, and I don't keep up with the latest japanese release, I only watch when it's on TV. If there is a character you like it's worth watching, and not something that should be taken seriously. Still it's popular, so it can't be that bad.

Naruto - about a boy who was shunned as a child which has only strengthened the resolve to become the greatest ninja ever. He does this by hard work and lots of training, the demon within is a good boon too. Lots of characters who each get their time in the spot light (except Sakura and Tenten for some reason) and the super powers aren't overly stupid either. This show uses chakra, and depending on a lot of factors is what super powers they use.

To be fair they aren't super powers per say, and is deep enough to be able to nerd out on. Three kinds of jutsu, a person could plot out their life in this universe as how they would devlup their powers. A person may be born with the water element, but that doesn't mean they will learn the power to spit water, they might do shadow clones instead. The Ninjutsu really is more fitting of that of an MMO, with customization that really goes as far as your imagination. I haven't even gotten to Clan powers yet either.

If we are talking about story than pacing is it's serious issue, but not as much anymore. One can watch the original Naruto series up to Sasuke's plot then skip over to Naruto Shipuden, which is a MUCH better show. Filler is often an extension of Naruto's training, and one filler even had a likable one shot villain.

I don't particularly like where the show is going after this either. Pain recently did a bs plot device and the show fell into filler, and what I hear about the Manga makes it sound like it is falling into a super sayian world, but at least the side characters actually do something and I am thankful for that. I really hate useless side characters when they have the power to do something, which doesn't happen here too often.

I am a bit invested in the Naruto series and will probably watch it to the end. I love it's fights, characters, and the abilities and hate when people fall back to the filler as the reason Naruto sucks.

Mind you all 3 are good shows, I'm not here to make you regret watching OP. To say bad things about another show without actually having personal reasons makes me suspicious that you didn't watch the show yourself, and thus gets on my nerves. Mileage may vary, after all there are some people who don't like Cowboy Bebop for some reason.

There is a lot of reasons I do not like OP, I can list them to you if you like. It is to say it's not the perfect show out there, that would belong to Bacciano! An anime about 1940's american gangsters and a train with a silly name.

Here's my take, in a nutshell:

Tried One Piece, couldn't handle the voices. Five minutes, and EVERYONE WAS YELLING. (caps used for comedic effect ^_^ ) Feel like I'm too far behind to start the manga.

Tried Bleach. Got up the the Bount filler arc, loved the show up to that point and pushing my way through. Tried the manga, but (like One Piece) found myself feeling WAY too far behind to catch up any time soon.

Started Naruto. Ended up watching fansubs all the way up to the timeskip (filler and all), rather liked it (ignoring the filler plot holes). In fact, I started the manga...and made it all the way through. Since Shippuden started, I've been up-to-date, thanks to a couple scanlators. Fell behind on the anime, though, so I'm still stuck at the second arc (tracking Orochimaru to find Sasuke).

So far, possibly because I got into it first, I prefer Naruto. Also, as Scot said, that universe has a wide variety of customization to the characters (which easily transfers to original, fan characters). Bleach was alright, that is the series I prefer the anime for (simply because it's a rather fun light-show, like how I imagine DBZ being). And One Piece...drove me off by the voice acting. Both Japanese and English, in case you were wondering. And, though the art style might be a plus for some of you, I find the eyes and mouths are creepy in a lot of the character designs. *shrug* I might give it another chance someday, but my time is limited for this stuff.

Reviving this because One Piece is good. I say this as someone who's watched/read it forever. The only thing to know (for sure) is that One Piece is aptly one of the slowest/worse shows until they reach Alabasta. Once this happens, the entire show really takes off. Short but sweet. If only I had a tongue to taste it. YOHOHOHO~!

(It's a reference. Google it =3=b)
