Physical Description
5'7"/170 cm, 170 lbs/70 kg. She is very fit and toned, with dark brown skin, black hair, and black eyes. Her hair is shoulder-length, straight, glossy, and brittle. She has fully-functional cybernetic replacement eyes, but she keeps her glasses set to opaque to avoid using her vision in most situations, and prefers to rely on a suite of modifications that provide enhanced echolocation. Though it's not possible for her to be so young, she appears to be no older than forty or so. Her diction is very precise.
Personality
Tan Ann Pan has great control of her emotions, but rather less awareness of them, sometimes leading to situations where she's not the first one to know how she's feeling, or where the first sign is some physical reaction she observes from herself. This tends to make her seem fearless and nonchalant, even when she may be about to faint, or leave impressions of her fingertips in a piece of metal.
In general, she tends to be motivated more by emotion than thought, and has a tendency toward capriciousness. Still, she consistently follows through and completes her objectives, even after losing whatever motivation first drove her in pursuit of them. It's not uncommon for her to complain about 'having to do' something, even when this requirement is entirely self-imposed.
Tan Ann Pan is occasionally hypomanic. While generally positive, such exuberance tends to be less than calming from a patient's perspective. Since her interests are so fleeting, it can be difficult to track her likes and dislikes or her attitudes toward people, from day to day. She has a notable dislike for the lifestyles of the rich and famous, though this as often seems to be based in envy as it does indignation, or good taste.
History
Tan Ann Pan was born well prior to YE 01, on an island in Medigeshrin Bay, Yamatai. At a young age, certain indiscretions of her father resulted in her experiencing an acute dose of nuclear radiation that left her blind and infertile, though she otherwise made a full recovery. This turned out to be a surprisingly fortunate accident, as not only were all her siblings forced into arranged marriages while she was left free to make her own decisions; the affliction also gave her some protection from the Great Plague of YE 08, for which eye contact was the primary vector of infection.
Until the plague, Tan had been content as a freelance writer and dilettante, but the tragedy inspired her to enter the medical profession. However, she soon grew frustrated with research and student loans, choosing instead to enter specialty practice as a cosmetologist. Though she hoped to make vast sums of money beautifying the first mass-production Nekovalkyrja, this market did not prove to be as lucrative as Tan predicted, and it took the better part of the YE 20s for Dr. Pan to pay her way out of debt. The clientele she did attract left her with low job satisfaction.
When the true cause of the Great Plague was discovered, Dr. Pan was livid, and joined the Star Army of Yamatai's intelligence division in hopes of getting her licks in against the perpetrators. She was, however, neither willing to receive the Standard Conditioning Package, nor to comply with the Species Restriction Order. A compromise was made, and she instead served the Star Army as a Field Agent in Funky City, working as a 'confidential' street doctor while reporting on her clients to Yamatai, in secret.
In YE 38, after three terms of service, Dr. Tan felt burnt out by intelligence service. She was attracted back to the Star Army by its new enemy, the Kuvexians, who she felt were a fine target for the decades of repressed anger she had in stock. Though a doctor, her outdated education and dubious reputation did not make her a good medical officer candidate. Rather than go back to school, she requested a direct transfer to the medical career track, and was not unsatisfied with having her contract renewed as a combat medic.
Social Connections
Due to the Great Plague, Tan Ann Pan has few living connections, and due to her intelligence work, even fewer of those are safe to associate with. However, she does have amicable relations with some patients from her old cosmetology practice, and distant relationships with some old colleagues from medical school.
