The End of an Era

Gunsight1

Potato Salad
So, later today the Inactivation ceremony for the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise CVN-65 will take place, after which she will be formally decommissioned, stripped of useful components and defueled before being towed to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where she will ultimately be scrapped. Due to the costs of removing Enterprise's 8 nuclear reactors and fuel the US Navy will not be donating the ship as a museum, so today is her first step towards her grave.

I have to say this day makes me really sad. I've known it was coming for some time, but I do not feel any better about it. To see such an important ship start her journey to the grave with the sure knowledge she has no chance of preservation as a museum like USS Hornet (where I volunteer as a tour guide). The Enterprise was the first true super carrier, even more so (in my opinion), than the Forrestal and Kitty Hawk classes. She was the first nuclear powered warship, she was the biggest and most powerful warship for over half a century. I know some might find it silly, getting upset over an old inanimate object getting sent to recycle, but ships are special, especially ships named Enterprise and its sad that once again, as with her predecessor, CV-6, she will not be saved for future generations to learn from and experience.

Right now the Navy has no plans to name any of the forthcoming Gerald R. Ford class carriers Enterprise. CVN-80 is as yet un named, so there is hope. There are petitions to have CVN-80 named Enterprise, which I hope she is. But with the Navy's recent theme of naming everything after Admirals and Presidents, I would not be surprised if we don't see another USS Enterprise for a long time.

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say, Enterprise has been a rather historically significant name since 1775. It'd be a disservice to name the CNV-80 it after a recent President because the recent Presidents, in my mind have done nothing to warrant the honor same goes for Admirals. Enterprise has. American Revolution, Sino-French War (Neutral Witness), World War II and as the first Nuclear Powered Warship.

Admirals and Presidents don't deserve it. Enterprise does.

That really is sad. It would be nice if she could be museum too. Ship with such an important name for american military history. Sad indeed.

It is sad that she will pass into history by being scrapped. I read about this a few weeks back. At least the navy has acknowledge that there will eventually be another Enterprise. Just not saying when.

Yea. there will be eventually. I just hope she doesnt follow the same fate as her two revolutionary war sisters, Hornet and Wasp whos names now belong to an airplane and a helicopter assault ship rather than carriers.

I'll be sure to say a few kind words for the former Enterprise when her nuclear reactor chambers arrive at Hanford.

She was a good ship. My dad served on her, technically making him a Captain of the USS Enterprise* for a while!

*Note: Dad wasn't the captain, but rather a ship's surgeon that ranked captain who was stationed on the U.S.S. Enterprise circa 2006.

That's cool that Wes' dad was involved with a ship you love/ loved so much Gunny. Not only that, he was a pretty high ranking person aboard the ship. Basically the captain!! I would bet that it was because of all of your wishing and hoping that the CVN-80 was named Enterprise!

My dad was the head the medical department, IIRC. He's a surgeon, not a line officer.

I read that, I was joking by saying he was the captain because you specified in your post what he was and wasn't. I think I've also come across you talking about your dad's role in the Navy before and think it's a pretty fitting history for someone that ended up making his own cyber-navy!
