Type 31 Survival Kit

It is a vastly improved item if for no other reason that it includes food. Seeing that it is meant as a emergency pack though I would suggest dropping the standard ration packs and filling that space with the nutrition pills.
 
Maybe include a few normal rations in the larger one instead and using the pills? It'd cut down on weight for the smaller unit.
 
There's only six rations in the standard backpack kit - I think that's fine, and there are plenty of the pills already. Having a few normal rations will help with morale I think. The larger kit has 42 more rations.

I may make a "pocket size" about the size of an Altoids tin that has ration pills and some other bare essentials, though. Alternatively, I could try to make a mini-kit for filling a hollow knife handle.

A mini-kit sounds like a good idea. Ration pills are somewhat iffy if proposed to be a full ration as there is a calorie/gram/density issue to think about.

My suggestion since it is Yamatai, and Yamatai's primary soldier is the Neko, to make such pills a complete multi-vitamin/nutrient and allow neko's to procure whatever raw calories are available from the environment(since nekos can eat some normally indigestible things to gain energy, like cellulose if I remember correctly).
