Approved Character [188604] Ryoko Atsuhara

Havicus

Inactive Member
Ryoko Atsuhara is a player character played by Havicus.

Species & Gender: Nekovalkyria (NH-29) Female
Year of Birth: YE 34
Organization: Independent
Occupation: Backalley Surgeon, Geneticist and Cyberdoc
Rank: Formerly Santo Hei in the Rikugun (Deserter, Officially MIA)
Preferred Plot: 188604

Physical Description
Height: 160cm (5'3")
Weight: 47kg (104 lbs)
Skintone: Albino
Eye Colour: Purple
Hair colour: Grey

Just slightly tall for a Nekovalkyrja, she still stands shorter than most humans. Her eerily pale complexion may be considered unusual, though not completely unheard of for her kind. She keeps her hair long, tied up in a long french braid that hangs down her back, while her features are always obscured by an ominous looking rebreather and opaque binocular visor. Though if she ever were to shed this mask in the presence of another, her feminine if just ever so slightly alien features would be revealed. A pair of large, almond shaped purple eyes, a tiny delicate nose as mouth that was just a bit too narrow, though of course still the normal size for one of her kind. Her build is not quite as fit and toned as other examples of her kind, due to her new cloistered lifestyle completely at odds with her militant origins. Countless hours spent working away in labs or conducting delicate surgery leaves little time for physical fitness, and her crippling weakness for the most decadent of sweets has even left her with just a bit of extra weight, not that one would be able to notice beneath the heavy labcoat she always garbs herself in.

Her voice is soft and reserved, rarely carrying perceptible emotion except during the occasional outburst of manic energy, the rebreather she always wears often gives her voice a hollow and artificial tinge to it.

Personality
Ryoko is an unstable creature to say the least. Prone to swings of mood between mania and meloncholy, fits of manic energy will have her dancing around and extolling her research in theatrical tones, while more dour moods will have her recluse herself entirely from personal contact, as she buries herself in old textbooks and research papers. Indeed those who have known her for awhile will often remark that it really is impossible to know just what to expect from her each new day.

Above all else, Ryoko is driven by her research. Passionately driven to continue the work that her mentor and father figure bestowed upon her. This often leads to her foregoing food and proper hygiene for days as she obsesses over the latest conundrum regarding the secret genetic secrets of the Nekovalkryja, Hemostasis, and life in general. She typically shuns any sort of intimacy with others, becoming quite uncomfortable and even hostile at any advances made in this regard, though she is perfectly capable of maintaining more platonic relationships with others.

She greatly values aesthetics in all things she does, a sentiment that seems to stand in contradiction of her often irrational and cluttered lifestyle. She has a great love of sculptures of classical antiquity, traditional works of art and intellectually stimulating musical composition. THat is not to say she does not enjoy more popular forms of art and music, indeed she will often become gleefully excited when encountering new types of visual and audio art, her highly sheltered and brief life have prevented her from forming any true prejudices, all new forms of stimuli are greeted with glee in general.

What could be her second greatest motivation is an unhinged adoration for decadent sweets, in particular fine pastries, cakes and flans. Essentially any baked good involving ample amounts of jam, whipped cream, chocolate sauce or syrup will be enough to lull her out of the darkest moods, and she has been known to accept such things in lieu of monetary payment, even at great personal financial loss.

History
Ryoko Atsuhara was born in YE 34 in the city of Kyoto. Created from the Star Army's vast cloning facilities located within the city's military districts, Ryoko took her first breaths during the violent and chaotic times of the ongoing Battle of Yamatai. Her initial training and socialisation period had to be cut short as mounting casualties of the planetary campaign forced her into active service a mere two weeks after birth. Thankfully much of her technical and combat knowledge was imprinted into her during her time in the vat, leaving her with all the most essential training for the coming campaign. With the genetic imprinting of a combat medic, she was programmed with an uncommon degree of empathy for her kind, along with an intimate knowledge of the anatomy of her own kind and the other common species of known to serve in the Yamatai Star Army.

Her first taste of combat was facing off against advance forces of the Mishhuvurthyar on the outskirts of the capitol itself. Her experiences there were inglorious at best. The hastily equipped squadron she was deployed with, many armed with formerly mothballed models of combat power armour due to equipment shortages suffered severe casualties at the tendrils of the nightmarish invaders. Ryoko was forced to watch as dozens of her vat-sisters were torn asunder or vapourized by the warrior-morphs of the enemy. She made a decent showing of herself, taking down several of the lesser combat frames of the enemy with her service rifle. However, during the battle, she was confronted by an enemy wielding a strange manner of energy weapon, the beam emitted from it struck her, though rather than vaporise her, it rendered her unconcious through the use of some sort of complex neural frequency to temporarily scramble her synapses. She was thankfully spared being captured alive by the Mishhuvurthyar by the timely intervention of reinforcements from the capitol, though a number of her sisters were not quite so lucky.

As one of the survivors of the opening attack on outskirts of Kyoto, she was quickly transported back to base, undergoing quick medical exams and given a slightly less outdated suit of power armour and a medal for combat service. She was then thrust back onto the frontlines, where she would participate in the remainder of the battle outside of Kyoto as one of the countless thousands of boots on the ground. However, it became increasingly clear that she had not survived that neural attack unscathed. Her behaviour began to grow more erratic. Haunting visions disturbed what little sleep she could find, as emotions she had never learned to cope with or control boiled up within her now clearly damaged mind. After three weeks of fighting, she returned back to base for another routine medical exam and refit. However, it was then that she was struck by a terrifying realisation, at least to her. The newest batch of NH-29 clones were being moved from the growth vats towards the training areas, and as Ryoko looked upon them, she was struck by a gutwrenching realisation that they all looked exactly like her fallen sisters. Visibly shaken by this existential crisis, she was ordered to attend a psych eval. However, a renewed Mishhuvurthyar offensive upon the planet's surface forced all availiable personnel to be deployed, sending Ryoko back out onto the frontlines.

During the final days of the ground campaign on Yamatai, Ryoko finally broke down completely. A vicious enemy counteroffensive left much of her squadron out of comission, leaving her isolated within a ruined civilian block of one of the planet's many cities. Her power armour damaged beyond repair, she shed the suit, stepped outside, clad only in her form fitting pilot's suit. Her own memories of what happened next are hazy at best. All she could ever recall was such an overwhelming feeling of dread and terror that she broke down entirely, and fled the scene as fast as she could on foot. Shedding all her comms devices and ID tags, she hid amongst the rubble of the city, with her commanders quickly documenting her as MIA and moving on with their campaign. SHe remained amongst the debris for several days, as the invading fleets were smashed in orbit by the timely intervention of fresh reinforcements from outside the system. With the bulk of the military moving away from the planet and out towards the frontier to drive the fight to the enemy, it fell to various independant civilian contractors to begin the reconstruction. While most of the crews working on Yamatai were highly vetted and trustworthy outfits, the reality of the war forced the government to press many more dubious organisations into work. One such organisation, a planetary construction outfit tied with ties to the Freespacers and a number of other black market institutions came across the lone Nekovalkyrja sifting through those abandoned ruins.

Traffic in authentic Nekovalkyrja frames is a highly lucrative enterprise as the closely guarded nature of their manufacture made synthesizing them impossible outside of government controlled labs. The organisation in question was a front for this trafficking, hoping to snag a few isolated Nekovalkyrja during the confusion following the Battle of Yamatai. Unfortunately for Ryoko, it was such a group that dug her out of the ruins. With powerful electrodes they subdued her, sequestering her within a stasis canister as she was quietly shipped off world. For a few months she was shuffled about through sketchy spacesports and poorly maintained checkpoints until she was finally deposited at a privately owned station along the fringe of Yamatai space. Not entirely aware of what was even happening, Ryoko was pushed out onto a stage sorrounded by some very dubious looking people. An announcer began to relay a fanciful tale of a peerless Yamatai soldier who was captured and had fallen into their possession, and for the right sum could be owned by whoever might be willing to pay up. As the crowd called increasingly fantastical amounts of KS, she was finally solder to a peculiar looking lanky old man by the name of Wehrner Elsenlach. The man stood far too tall to be a normal human, easily seven feet in height, and was constantly cloaked in a long, slightly stained and tattered labcoat, his face always obscured by a rebreather and a set of sophisticated looking binocular goggles.

The man promptly whisked the bewildered Nekovalkyrja away to a remote facility beyond the bounds of Yamatai Space. Her memories of this time remain particularily foggy, perhaps subconciously repressed. All she can conciously remember is that it was a confusing and painful time, as the man, claiming to be a freelance genetic researcher, conducted a dizzying array of tests and experiments upon her body, testing her to her very limits in hope of unlocking the secrets held within her body. Though as the tests continued, the man only seemed to grow more frustrated, as all the proprietary safeguards installed in her body constantly interfered with his research, making it impossible for him to glean anything beyond the most basic and general functions of her biological systems. However the continued strain placed upon her system and its safeguards were beginning to wear on Ryoko's mind, exacerbating the mental trauma she had already endured back on Yamatai. She found herself growing more fascinated by the man who held her captive, as she grew more and more detached from her own biological reactions, instead witnessing the experiments upon her body in a dispassionate, even clinical manner. Indeed, she began to grow more curious about what exactly he was trying to achieve, clearly it had to do with her own origins, a matter she only had a rudimentary understanding of.

The first time she spoke to him during one of the experiments, the man nearly had a heart attack. The pain of the procedure ongoing should have forced even an augmented human to black out, and yet here she was, speaking to her in a calm, even innocently curious tone of voice. "What are you trying to find out?" At the time Wehrner coould only shrink away, pondering for a time before powering down the machinery attached to Ryoko's body. "I am sure you must be aware of what you are." He finally said, peering at her from the edge of the room. In that moment, Ryoko became aware of how frail the man looked, this figure that had loomed over her and haunted her dreams since she had come to this place, in the end perhaps he was just as mortal as all of her sisters who had died back on Yamatai. "I am Santo Hei Ryoko Atsuhara of the Yamatai Rikugun, NH-29 Model Nekovalkyrja exosuit operator and designated combat squad medic." Ryoko blinked, it was like someone else had been speaking through her mouth, a very unusual sensation. Wehrner just remained silent, the sound of his noisesome ventillator the only thing audable in the chamber. "Ah dayes, introductions I suppose!" The man seemed strangely elated, even warm. "Wehrner Elsenlach, a researcher of no particular note formerly of Nepleslia, though my alleigance to a certain faction there made my continued existence in their space a bit uncertain to say the least? Ryoko hmm? Well I'm afraid to say you're not exactly enlisted with the Yamatai Star Army anymore. I imagine they've written you off as dead or a deserter by this point." It struck Ryoko that this revelation should have more impact on her, though in a way she had known these words to be true for some time now, there was no real way she could imagine returning to serving in the Star Army, nor did she even have any desire to.

With those few brief words, Ryoko's life rapidly began to change. In a fit of manic glee the good doctor undid he restraints and led her out of the main laboratory. Providng her with some clean sets of clothes and giving her a tour of the facility. As time went on, Ryoko learned more about him and his operation. A researcher within the Nepleslian Red Faction, he was forced to flee to extraimperial space to continue his research into the pernicious technologies created by the Yamatai Star Empire's top researchers, the miraculous technology of the Hemosynthesis and the Nekovalkyrja apparently derived from it. At first his quest to reverse engineer the technology had pragmatic goals, the production of similar technology to help tip the ongoing conflict between the Reds and Greens back into his own people's favour, however the more he came to grasp the technology true potential, the more he came to believe that hidden within that technology was the means to end all this conflict entirely. Indeed he firmly believed that breaking the countermeasures that guarded the technology could only lead to the creation of the means to apotheosis. It would be years before Ryoko would begin to grasp the true meaning of what Wehrner had shared with her, at the time she was mostly thrilled to be allowed to roam free from that dingy holding cell.

For the next two years, Ryoko grew closer to Wehrner, as he took her on as an apprentice, teaching her everything he knew about cybernetics, digital physics, biology and genetics. She frequently assisted him in his second line of work, as a black market surgeon. Whether it was patching up gang enforcers sporting illegal mods, or the even more loathsome business of forced desleeving of persons within particularily valuable morphs, Ryoko took the work with glee, drawing upon her imprinted medic training as a foundation for her training as a true medical researcher and surgeon. However as time went on, Ryoko began to find the cycle of events increasingly monotonous. Until one day, she approached Werhner, requesting that she go her own way. Though he was utterly shocked at first, he pondered on it for some time, telling her to leave him to think. It was not until several hours later that Werhner summoned Ryoko to his chambers, where she found several cases laid out for her. Clothing, medical equipment, food and water rations, firerms and a lump sum of KS in credstick form. He instructed her to take all the equipment provided, before travelling with her to the very same station where she had been purchased by him two years prior. He provided her with list of contacts, old friends and business partners of his. "They should be able to point you in the right direction. I am sure you will be able to get along quite fine with the tools I have given you, though it is unlikely we will meet again." His voice was stern, though a bit shaky, as he bid her a last farewell. Ryoko stood and watched him wordlessly, a part of her still unable to grasp the emotional significance of the situation, other parts of her both elated and terrified at the notion of being cut free into a wholly alien galaxy. She was left only to nod to him in reply, as he turned to leave her, the last time she would see her mentor.

Hmm, you're probably right, I'll make an adjustment. I misinterpreted Freespacer as interchangeable with Independent.

The character looks great, and it seems like you already have a pretty good idea of who she is.

The only think I'm worried about is the character history, since there is a lot there, and nearly all of it deals with stuff I'm not directly familiar with. Can I get @Wes to sign off on the character history or give some alternate ways for her to have been lost to the reds if you don't want her to have been at the battle of Yamatai? I could see being purchased for experimentation working just as well.

The big problem here is mostly that it is hard to say this could have happened on Yamatai since the whole planet is a massive surveillance-state.

Well I did try to paint in as broad of strokes as I could, since I also don't know a lot of intimate details of the battle, just read summaries of the campaign over the wiki, I was hoping that Ryoko position as just a faceless set of boots on ground during the campaign would give her some leeway in that regard, but I of course am willing to reconfigure her backstory if there are issues.

I suspect it will be fine, but I also want to double check with @Wes since that's his part of the setting.

Did you have something in mind already for how Ryoko will make her way to 188604?

We are in need of more medical-people, and it is possible that our little group would reach out to people like Ryoko for help.

Well I figured that the list of contacts that Wehrner provided her could list one of Ragnarok's suppliers to reference her there, or even directly list one of its member.

It was a tough decision as FM but I decided I won't object to the history.

I'm wondering if there's some critical mass of deserters that need to arrive on 188604 before the SAoY swoops in, but it's an idle curiosity. I'm pretty sure they could handle at least two or three more. Five is the really dangerous number, if TV has taught me anything.

I was expecting a mad science droid, but then, I never would have thought of a mad science Neko!

Alright then, I'm going to give my approval then since we have Wes' sign off.

That means we need to setup a JP to get you introduced to 188604. Either PM me, or catch me in chat and we can discuss the specifics.
