I'll need some time to compile everything and set up the polls.

Go here to vote in the 2012 Star Army Awards!

Voting will be open until noon EST Sunday!

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

I'd like to point out that, in my opinion, this voting process for the 2012 awards is by far inferior to the one you used in 2011.

You based this on open nominations, which were based on people being willing to think up of things worthy of being voted for. In the majority, this wasn't the case - for example, I didn't because I sort of stick my attention only to my own things, and kind of view it as pretentioous shove them forward as nominations. Especially when given a blank slate.

Similarily, people will generally only have access to the things they actually know to present and vote for. This heavily biases the nomination and voting process.

There also was a certain lack of publicizing involved for it as well. There's been little reason for the SARP membership overall to care, which in turn greatly diminishes the worth of any awards thus received.

* * *

The end result, for me, is that the linked poll is largely nonsensical. I don't really know anything of the people/characters/situations brought up. I could vote blindly anyways - but that wouldn't be worth much. Hence, my decision to simply not vote at all.

My suggestion to salvage this? Restart the process following the way it was done in 2011. Notify the membership via e-mail, point them to the right location, and give them a month to fill it in. Remind them weekly. Oncethe month is done, start the voting process proper, collect the results, and then display accordingly.

You might not get the final results until late Febuary... but at least it would mean something to more people rather than this isolated anomaly you have going.

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

I like Fred's idea 'cause this year's system favors people only really knowing their own plots. The old way made people investigate and read other plots. That said, I'll still vote on the one we've got.

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

In 2011, many of the categories did not receive any or enough nominations at all. So this year we let people submit categories. There were about thee months for people to vote in the stickied nominations thread, which was open from September 3 until the end of the year. If this year's awards look skimpy, it's because not a lot of people cared enough to submit anyone for anything. Due to that lack of interest, I'm not sure if I'll do awards for 2013.

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

I didn't even know this was a thing. I don't read anything outside of the Eucharis forum unless there's an announcement pointing me towards it, like this. Not that I'm not interested, there's just a lot going on that doesn't actually involve me, and I have no way to pick out what does actually apply to me.

Oh dear, and to make it even worse, I just checked...and apparently I'm up for an award! I had no idea.

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

That's a lackluster response from you, Wes.

You were trying something new. Right now, it's not looking like it'll succeed. However you paint this, the 2011 method was still much more useful than this even with its flaws.

In any case, I gave my input. Others did and agreed. If you want to disdain that and keep things going as they are... fine, have it your way.

edit: though, I'm inclined to see if I can prove you wrong.

Re: Vote on the 2012 Star Army Awards!

Well, there is nothing wrong with trying different methods. I have never been very fond of these kind of Awards, because to my way of seeing it they really become a popularity contest more than a true award.

I would like to make a counter proposal for 2013. That during Jan and Feb the staff work up a list of categories. We then post them where the membership can see them readily. We make the month of October the month for Submissions from the general membership. At the end of the month, we compile the submissions, and the staff then reviews the submissions and rates them. eg: if a category has four submissions each of the staff would rank them 1-4 and the one with the lowest score is the winner of that category.
