2012 Star Army Awards (Results posted)

It's the opinion of a few people that the way the 2012 nominations and voting have been handled are subpar to the way it was done in 2011. So, to see if we can get something good going, I'm starting this thread.

The way this works:
You have a numbered list below (taken from the 2011 list) which cover characters (PCs and NPCs each have thier own categories), wiki entries and past events.

Go through the list, and fill in the entries with whatever you feel matches it the most. This is meant to cover 2012, but you don't have to try too hard to keep in mind 2012-specific events. Just try to fill as many as you can, but it's no biggie if you leave some entries empty.

An easy way of doing to so just to clickdrag everything from "Character Awards" and downward, paste it into a new post (or a PM to me, if you're more reserved), and just fill in the lines.

I'm leaving you guys until January 31st to reply to this thread (I'll be sending out reminder PMs to keep awareness high). After that, entries in the list will be consolidated, and we'll get to voting.

Similarily, people will generally only have access to the things they actually know to present and vote for. This heavily biases the nomination and voting process.

This is true no matter what. I don't read anything outside of the plots I'm involved with. I daresay a lot of players are like that as well.

Even the old 2011 was susceptible to this. I don't particularly care to spend hours hunting down, reading and then analyzing threads. If its not Nepleslia or the couple of Yamatai plots I'm in, it means very little to me.

Personally, I see no problems with Wes wanting to try something new. If it doesn't work out, then we can revert to the old method, give it TIME and don't just say that it 'won't work' when we haven't even seen the results.

Now, my only problem with voting is that when I see myself I'm too tempted to vote for myself XD

Yep, this is why I fail to see the problem. Both methods have their issues. Although, to be honest, while I never voted (due to conflicts of interest on my part) I often times did read the threads nominated to see why they appeared.

I am not doing this, as it is a virtual form of kicking chair from under Wes. Sorry Fred, but this seems like big dick-move to me. This year awards might not be super-awesome, but we are to blame, not Wes. We could have added all these awards, but did not.
 
I disagree with this as well.

Wes is holding them, and I was going with his method. The hard linking is also a pain in the ass. Also, #67, that kind of condescending talk needs to be shelved.

But more importantly, what list are we using?
 
If you do not wish to lend your voices to this on imprecations that I'm somehow butting Wes aside, feel free to. However, to me, this is fabricating drama where none need exist.

The 2012 attempt Wes tried is indeed not looking out like much. As Shotjon said, it's mostly our fault. We can either do something about it, or not. Ironically, I'm seeing my show of initiative as a very blatant show of support. I could've decided not to care about this. I don't exactly gain a whole lot by being the one stuck with doing the reminders, compiling the results and creating the pool. But I did anyhow.

I figured that if I tried to care about this, others might try too, rather than entirely doom the venture as it was being slated to be. It's definitely better than indifferently sitting on my hands. Rather than sit on our hands, how about we try to save it by ourselves rather than leaving all the work to Wes?

Regardless, this is not a discussion thread - it's a nomination one. Be respectful and don't detract from it. If you don't want to show support for this, don't post at all. If you do, feel free to.
 
Fred "It's the opinion of a few people" then you and those few people should have spoken up when Wes first proposed the new format. Not wait until the Award Nomination process was completed. By saying nothing you gave tacit approval.
 
Fred was working his way back into the site when the first round of awards came up. He was focusing on his plot — as every GM should.

I'll place my vote soon.
 
Is there no way to integrate them? Clearly the 2012 awards as they're presently, officially being done are not sufficient. The nominations - I looked through them - are not representative of the entire site. Nobody could be arsed to come up with their own nominations.

The nomination style Fred recalls from 2011 got a lot more support, for whatever reason, from a broader range of players. Frankly, I didn't even bother to submit nominations myself, because the first few nomination posts looked goofy.

So perhaps we could find some sort of compromise, or simply accept that the nominations are no longer going to be a huge part of the yearly routine.

Viewing the recent ... awards, I find much to be lacking in both of these threads. They both assume a general awareness of EVERYTHING going on in the site. Few of us can claim such honors. 9/14 of the awards went to Yamataian threads, characters, plots, players. 1 to Lorath (which involved Yamatai)

I would propose that the next survey be divided and less site-wide. A list, similar to above, specifically for Yamatai. Another for Nepleslia, another for X, Y, Z factions. That would allow for greater acknowledgment than making characters from entirely different factions, who might be unknown to half the site, get more attention.

I would rather have a separate awards thing for Nepleslia where people who would actually know the character would vote for him/her. Hell, I'd like to make one right now but it's 2013 and then there's this and all the grief people give to Fred for taking some initiative. You don't like it, don't post here. Send Fred a civil PM with your views but taking the mickey out of him for providing an alternative is just plain wrong.

Wes, it has been brought to my attention that not enough people were even aware of the voting this year.

I suggest we re-open the polls with a bit more PR in the IRC. That away if some people were un-able to vote there is no reason to grip or complain.

I'm not re-doing them. Nominations were open for months and I can't make people read the forums. Also there's way more to this site than the IRC channel.

Well clearly there is some streamlining to be done in terms of how the voting process for the SARP awards should be handled. a lot of people have different ideas and are dissatisfied with the way it was done this year.

As far as "not liking it" and sending a civil PM. I get that discussions done in private should stay private. But If you post something publicly...say on these forums then we the members of this site can (and will) like wise react to it publicly. If that can not be handled then do not post your thoughts, ideas and views publicly.
 
Just right off the bat, a note. If they're too long, or you don't know of anything that fits the category, then don't vote. Nobody has said you're required to fill out every category. No, it isn't perfect, but it can be worked on and made MUCH better if we actually try.
