Been doing some thinking...

Soresu

Well-Known Member
Well, I had bee doing some thinking on a particular subject as of late. As Wes, and Andrew know, in the past during Yamatai's board hopping days they visited one in particular called Galaxy's Edge, in which I played on before joining the SARP. On there I had a technologically advanced race called the Tinariam. And I have been wanting to "revive" them ever since GE disappeared. I was going to do so on another board, but that is pretty much on seemingly indefinite hiatus.

So, I would like to bring them here...my only qualm is the rules regarding 'new' races. Please, keep in mind, if I played on GE, this was back in early 02' up to 06' before I joined here. And they aren't new, but fairly old to me since I pretty much went the same route Wes did, and got the idea for them over a period of time.

What I am worried about is the rule regarding technology for new races. Naturally, if I bring a fleeing species in from another universe they'd have to have some fairly advanced tech to pull it off. Hence, why I am bringing this forward to all of my comrades, the GM's, mods, and the Boss, Wes. You all know me quite well, and know how I operate, I am pretty responsible with my position, and what I do with it in terms of IC developments, and OOC stuff.

Now, before anyone of you start to think I am trying to jump the rules, please, hear me out as I would hope as my friends you would treat me to a just, and fair discussion on the issue.

If, and this is If I were allowed to bring them in, I would work with the GMs regarding them, and to assuage any concerns regarding to them being the way they are in terms of technological developments. I wouldn't go "warmongering" unless it was justly called for, but, due to past events on GE and them being ICly left hanging to deal with a galaxy wide threat (Like how the YSE and the SMX.) despite alliances, and so on, they are a tad distrusting of other species, and a little xenophobic now as a result. Due to the threat (which was a pretty big war.) their numbers are low in comparison to the big factions, YSE, DIoN, UOC, and so on. And all they'd want to do is basically rebuild, and try to get on with their lives. Heck, I even recall getting dispensation in the past to utilize one of their A.I controlled ships in a fight on here which was rather fun, and kind of pulled on my old heartstrings in rememberance of them.

I'd thought of bringing them here in the past, but was fairly wary, and apprehensive on the issue since I did not know how everyone would take to the idea of such a thing... But, in the end, the urge to resurrect a species I built from the ground up won over. So, if any of you have questions regarding them, please, feel free to ask, and I am wholly open to debates on the issue since I bring this forward to you all before I even thought of submitting them out of respect for my fellow GMs and the Mods and Admin and as the new rule states on letting us know your plans on the plots as well as common courtesy. (I guess this could be considered as a plot thing as well as a personal request.)

I'm not opposed to the introduction of another faction with Nepleslia/Yamatai-level technology. The NDI had a presence in the setting, holds 2 star systems and we're all fine with that.

What I would like to see, however, would be for the setting to gain from the presence of Soresu's race. It shouldn't just be Soresu bringing his favorite children along and try to have them live again, so much as a medium with which our current playerbase will be more entertained because they are present.

If the goal is to have them revived and build more of a presence, then, it's probably better they start with the equivalent of one system and spread out. Doing otherwise would be unfair to the Lorath (the NDI has only 2 star systems, so this isn't all that constraining) and expansion would have - of course - to be backed by the roleplay for it (integrate it into a plot so to enrich player experience with that).

The two above paragraphs outline my position, and Soresu seems to have taken that under account. That clears up any misgivings, though I'm left with mostly questions as to what the race is and what will come from it... as in Soresu's preliminary plans, a pitch telling us what the race is, etc...

Well, I would be more then happy to explain what they are perse'. Due to my plans of bringing them here, I'd worked up a bit of a backstory regarding them on here.

Prior to their present settlements on the SARP in the 'present' they were here in the past. This was due to them experimenting with Transdimensional Drives and so on due to witnessing Yamatai coming into the GE universe from afar. (They generally didn't get into other species affairs beyond trade, alliances and so on.) The TDD's Yamatai used acted as a beacon to the Tinariam's enemy, and by extension due to their nature, everyone elses in the galaxy. My info in the pre-history is fuzzy, but some race played with the same tech, and unleashed beings into our dimension that remind me of the Mishhu in terms of wanting to be the dominate force in the universe. Kill, and sort it out later mentallity. In the end they were pushed back, but at a high cost in terms of the species of the day.

My race, the Tinariam is the direct descendants of a species from there that threw down with the bad guys, and pretty much reached the point of no return in terms of population base, and the gene pool being so small, so they died out, but left the Tinariam behind as a legacy, and to act as a sort of 'guardian' should this enemy ever arise again. When Yamatai came, that caught their attention, and they found my species. We fought, and my race was no match in terms of technological might, and numbers, so, it was a losing battle, the only choice they had was to flee, but knowing no where in this universe was safe, and due seeing the TDD's in use, they decided on another. They came to the SARP Universe with the remainder of their population on several large 'City Ships'.

However, due to the nature of the tech, and it not being properly tested they were indeed flung into the SARP Universe but in a different time period due to when you cross another universe you also do so with time as well since time, is its own dimension which they did not take into account as the sudden need to flee neccessiated the use of the tech so soon.. Several million years prior to current events. After some time, they began to refine the technology, and experiment, and advance their own in fear of another encounter. In the end, their paranoia won out, and they left this universe going to another (the one I had intended to bring them to. Heck, if you go about 300 LY out from Yamatai you may even find something of theirs from the past.) however they were not well received, and instead returned here, but to the present timeframe as they'd corrected with the systems. While I wouldn't be using TDD's perse', I would likely be making use of Unstable space as a sort of 'catalyst' to initiate such a jump. (I will explain further if there is questions on it.)

Physically speaking, and forgive the cliche' and cheesiness, but, back in the day I considered them to be very drow-like in appearance minus the whole only having one hair color, and skin tone, and so on. From cinnamon hue to obsidian black in skin tones, and a very wide variety of hues for hair, pink, purple, red, blue, green, silver, grey, etc etc, plus you cannot count out hair dyes and so on.

Eye colorations were also of a wide variety, blues, greens, red, yellow, different shades of purple and so on.

Mindset wise in regards to technology, they remind me of me. "Just because you have it, doesn't mean you have to flaunt it." due to them being an older race their views on such a thing with young races make them think of them as children. So, you won't necessarily see turrets, missile tubes, and big main guns on their ships, they typical have such things in gun ports, covered tubes, and openings. Over all, I always played them as a more defensive mindset in terms of war, only going on the offensive when need arose, and not making war, but sowing for peace as often as they could. Now, it would be harder due to past events as stated above.

As for what will come of it... well, I wouldn't go blasting everyone to bits, I mean hey, if I get pushed around, I may push back sure, but otherwise it is a "You don't start things with me, I won't with you." policy. The only race they have any issues with is Yamatai, and that is very very mild, nothing in terms of wanting a war, or death, or anything, they just as I stated above in regards of tech, consider them to flaunt it, instead of being humble about being of a more advanced nature then other species. As it stands, if Yamatai tried to make contact, they may, or may not choose to listen, but that is more so for everyone in general, and not some kind of vendetta against Yamatai since if they did, they would be polite, a little distrusting, but, polite.

They would be open to interact with other races sure, but, you would have to work to earn their trust, and respect, and that will not come easily. They have a rule against trading their technologies, fearing giving to "lesser" species would result in self-annihilation, but, would generally trade food, water, raw, or processed materials, star charts and so on, basically what everyone would trade minus your military hardware.

Ship design wise I tended to make them...elegant in appearance, smooth, and curvy, no hard edges unless it is purely a military ship, and then it'd be more of a predatory appearance, but as I stated, gun ports, and so on, no visible weapons. Since frankly, I believe seeing a ship with weaponry coming towards my nation's borders means war, and one that doesn't either has the gun ports closed out of respect for our concerns on safety, and does not wish to fight, but instead talk.

As for more backstory...I had collaborated a bit with Osa in regards to his race and mine to. And I believe it would pretty much better elaborate on the origins of his species, enrich IC plot developments on my and his ends, and maybe everyone else's depending on how things go. As for what I want out of them, right now it is more a matter of how well they interact with the various races of the SARP then anything really and how well they are taken to by them. No contact with any of them beyond just seeing Yamatai in the past at a distance isn't much, so, it'd have to be done by stratch.

EDIT: And no, no time travelling, what happened before was purely a mistake, and pretty much due to lack of understanding and proper testing of the device used to bring them here (Think going into a wormhole, and not knowing where the exit is.). I actually kind of detest time travel, but, I figured universe hopping means you're going through several high order dimensions and barriers, time included. They messed up, and so, ended up in the past not really knowing how they did it. Now, with the device fixed, they are at 'normal time' and can't hop time.

I wouldn't mind another species coming in, but... aren't these the guys you were telling me about who used one damaged ship to bitchslap multiple YSE military vessels? It would kind of suck if the "new kid on the block", as it were, just popped up with weaponry to easily trump races already established heavily in the setting.

Also, I kind of like the policy of having nations start out small and technologically inferior to the big guys. Yes, they're far more vulnerable to other powers, but it's better than having a dozen races all at the same technological plateau and staring daggers at each other while trying to run an arms race, like the current state of international affairs in SARP only expanded.

Another thing would be the issue with just starting out with tech on the level with the dominant powers in the setting. Soresu, you know I like and trust you man, but I don't find it quite fair to everyone else that your race comes in with an extremely powerful tech base, while pretty much everyone else, Nepleslia included, has had to climb their way up.

The ship didn't really 'bitchslap' the YSE detatchment, like I said before, they are more defensive so their defenses are on par with Yamatai, or more so in regards to dimensional defenses (I think Aether was dimensional based at the time, I couldn't recall.). In terms of weaponry, the ship they fought was geared towards fighting the Tinariam race's enemy, and that necessitated the need of excessive firepower and exceptional defenses as much as they could do (This ship was about Sakura sized). And no YSE ships were lost, one Yuuko was damaged yes due to the ship's main cannon firing (the thing was barely operable to begin with so pretty much fused once fired). Plus, I couldn't make it easy on my players to pull off such an easy victory, so, I had to embelish and do the GM thing to make it more difficult. :|

As for the rest, Sub, I feel your concern, but, I just can't see how raping them of their established technological base would be fair to me in terms of bringing them in when they need it to do so in the first place. In terms of differences in tech, what the SARP has documented, I can make use for them, and even twist it into something new by combining bits here and there into something unique, but, I can't really lower the base tech level if I bring them in since it would make no sense to just say they lost their tech when they came. Plus...I mean heck, I'd be starting with one or two systems, and by the rules, I'd have no more then five hundred ships. But, due to how things went down, I'd only maybe have 250 tops despite this since they're literally rebuilding their civilization from the ground up. Anyone could steamroll me, easily even with the tech you're concerned about. Plus, like I said, I wouldn't go out picking fights, but, if someone tried to, I wouldn't back down as is you know if it is on my home turf, just, even if it is a loosing battle I'd do what I could and then run. Plus, I might add, the new DR Scale pretty much is an effective leash in terms of just how much our weapons dole out the pain, and our defenses brunt the damage anyways.

Other then that, I assure you, you would have nothing to fear from me besides Rico likely adding another notch to his belt of "Alien Races I've banged." And possibly another child to make Adrian pull out his hair... *snerks*

The ship that was used was one pulled through a 'rift' created by the intercecting beams of two main guns impacting into each other. The A.I ship was pulled through its universe, and into this one in a similar fashion as when my race first came here. So it had been sitting dormant admist a stellar nursery until the faint readings left by the rift after space had 'healed' from the rip in space time it'd suffered had been repaired. A YSE ship initiated a scan on the heavily damaged craft, which pretty much triggered an automatic startup sequence.

The ship first brought what systems it could online, and scanned the area, and checked background star charts. It didn't know where it was, when, or how it got there. Then it detected the YSE Detatchment, and requested certain passcodes, assuming now that it had been planted in this area from its creators to 'guard' it. The YSE Detatchment naturally did not know, so, it initiated combat procedures and attacked. In the end it was defeated by my main char, Yuriko as the A.I ship's main data core was pulled via a Mindy and a teleportation module. Without the core, the power systems overloaded due to no regulatory systems being operable and pretty much was the equivalent of a Yuumi's main reactors going critical, and even exploding the nursery in the process.

That datacore is as of now still in her family's possession, pretty much burnt out, save for some active neuro-mechanical cells still being partially active and kept in a suspended state.

...It'd make sense if that damaged ship cost 5+ times that of a typical YSE vessel to build. More bang for your buck in a smaller volume but higher manufacturing and maintenance costs or other penalties would make sense for that bonus.

Considering what it was built to kill, it had probably some of the most advanced tech I had, had at the time in its frame to combat their enemy. Plus, the computer suites were fairly up there too in complexity being a perfect blend of neurological cellular structures and nano-mechanical computation systems working in tandem and accelerated via a gel medium.

Bamp?

So yes, as Fred has stated, I'd be working to make them have more presence though RP. Since honestly, I'm not looking to ursurp the 'Big Boy' nations, they leave me alone, and I'd be more then happy to leave them be. If they wanted to do some diplomacy, we could work on it certainly. Otherwise no wars, and so on, just a people adjusting to a relatively new universe, the species inhabiting it, and to rebuild their nation, and past glory. The tech, I would try and make a little more exotic then the standard I have been seeing on here, I know we love our beam cannons but to me they're getting a little old, and I'd love to see different forms of weaponry dependent on another species' perspectives on how they "do battle" when being dragged into it.

But, mostly I'd be too busy getting things together, reviving a species, making friends, rebuilding, and exploring to do much of anything. Yes, if someone wants to try and push me around on my home turf, I'd fight back, and hard, but otherwise I'd be a pretty peaceful nation, defensive instead of offensive and so on, only resorting to violence when provoked, or at un-warranted guests 'invading' their space without permission, or simply...invading I guess you could say. Since in all honesty I'd have to take baby steps in order to get them going full steam and onto the road of recovery.

Kinda like on how elves can be reclusive and keep humans out of their forests. :)

Soresu, I've been reading over the background info above, and I'm of the thought you're making it a bit needlessly complicated. I think you could easily work to streamline it into something simpler.

For example, I really don't see why the race would have to have made two tries to come into the SARP universe, one in the past, one back from wherever else and one finally 'at the right place' when they could have just one-shotted their way here and found that they couldn't use their inter-dimensional equipment right away because the way it was built was meant to a single-use unidirectional our-dimension-to-this-dimension travel.

Simpler is best, I think. "We left, we came here, and we're rebuilding now". Remember that once you make a write-up of your race on the Wiki that a new reader is not going to relate to anything you've done before it came to SARP, so, it might be to your advantage to glass over details for the sake of pragmatism.

Kinda like on how elves can be reclusive and keep humans out of their forests. :)

Exactly Fred. :P Ironically, they also had bad blood with several human nations back in the day too. One tried to pretty much invade, and the they sent fleet got wiped out within a matter of days. (Due to being lower on the tech, and strategy scale.)

Well, it was mostly done that way to go along with some backstory regarding the Sourcians and their "creation". Since well, I'll be giving this away, but, if they came back, they'd have made the Sourcians, as an attempt to better themselves genetically, and physiologically via symbiosis and hybridization to be better prepared to combat their enemy should they ever arise again. While the Sourcians you see today, Rebeka, and my own, Lillius are further up on the echelon of evolution, the "Proto-Sourcians" they used on themselves were Rebeka, and Lillius' cousins, and ancestors as far as relations go.

As a by product the direct race was made, and controlled via a Tinariam Computer System that became the First Maesus, via it "evolving" since Tinariam Computers are partly organic, they have the capacity to adapt, and so on to their environment, much like an ARIA. So, it'd be like leaving a child behind to learn on their own, and become their own person. We decided on this due to similarities in their technologies (Being pre-valent on organic mimicry, or in my case, metallic organic mimicry), and as a sort of mirror effect, and to deepen, and enrich the two species story wise. I suppose that bit of pre-history could be waved, and merely set into the back and the better tid bits brought to the forefront.

But, considering the First Maesus is the only one who knows, and if the entire race finds out, it could create an upheaval, and possibly rebellion, or war between my race, and his, as it'd be akin to a child who'd been raised by someone other then their true parent finding out first hand, "I'm not your father, he is." so, they may lash out. They may not, or heck, some may side with me, others in their own groups, it is potentially a breaker in regards to deepening the story of the two races basically, and I don't know in which direction it could go in terms of war between them, or peace. To me, it is a real nailbiter and something I am actually rather giddy about doing if given the chance. Heck, we even run the chance of them never even encountering one another again.

So, the whole going back and forth thing will be kept under a tight seal, and in the background while the "later" history is on the fore could work, while the earlier is more of a secret, and possible plot related device, think it'd be good?

Just a bit of an update. Due to this being a fairly large scale project which I am the sole person working on it, I'm going to be going in a fairly random direction...pretty much depending on what area inspiration hits me (as I have to work on tech, biology, ships, culture, flora, fauna, animals, the planet.) Right now however I am working on an odd little device called the Thosae Ras... I know it is kind of a ridiculous bump, but, the only people who have voiced their opinions on the issue have been Fred, Sub and Osa. I'd like to hear from the rest of my comrades on wither or not I be allowed to utilize this race of mine since I am starting to invest time in them.

I think I am going to retool my race somewhat, and add in a bit more backstory overall that Andrew and I fooled with elsewhere.

As you can tell, someone has a bit of a Tiff with Adrin, and that someone, is the Tinariam High Queen. Prior to this little SARP move, Adrin ordered her kidnapped. Which, was a no no. So, after finding out he is here... She's come for vengeance. And more or less, to harrow them. Now, due to IRL issues, I know I have nothing for them up, but I am working as I have time, and inspiration takes me. So, please bare with me. :) And forgive me if whatever I put up is disorganized since I tend to work on a set number of things depending on my current flight of fancy as I have found that forcing a submission tends to give lackluster results.

*sings* Dark elves... in spaaaaceeee

I'm sorry Soresu. I trust you to not screw anyone over in the RP, but if I see another "generic humanoid race who look like humans but are also exotic with additional organs X and Y and different skin tones but you can totally relate to them because they look human", I think I'm going to puke. Repeatedly. Until my stomach is empty.

And just allow me for a moment to push aside all the background material that I know you've worked very hard on, and say that you're actually trying to bring what is essentially a space-faring version of a generic fantasy race here. Now I'm not one of those "haha Drizzt sux" guys. I read Drow Tales for goodness sake. But this just makes me want to nerd-rage in the worst way. I don't even know why. :p

I can't offer a good argument for why you shouldn't do this. I realize that it's hypocritical for me to huggle my catgirls and tell you to "keep your fantasy fiction out of my sci-fi". But come on. 😢

Oh, and unless Wes retconned them out of canon already, we already have elves in SARP. But they were written into the story a long time ago.

Actually... they shapeshift their form now is more or less to put humanoid races at ease and make things easily relatable. :? Talking to a giant whale with robot legs and arms wearing a monocle would be a tad...out there. So, they chose a form that says, "Ok, they're normal enough looking." without the "Oh mah gawd he's going to think I'ma krill!" type thing. (Yes, I know, worse possible comparrison.) But, honestly, if they shapeshift to a degree, doesn't that mean they can alter their appearance to something unique and thusly suited to their personal pique's? :ugeek: As I have said before, I'm working on it, by myself, so, things a lot of things are still wholly up in the air. As for catgirls Yangfan, I've seen me plenty of fantasy catgirls. Too. :P

I expect this to be a fairly long process truth be told. Since I'm sitting here working on a plausible way of harness quantum singularities as powersources, while not going over the proverbial edge and into Gaiaonline like rp, the bad kind. ^^;

By all means. Just know that stuff is pretty old and out of date considering we moved the RP to another site where I'd them more up to date. Honestly, looking back at all that, I find it a tad embarrassing considering it wasn't my finest, nor most imaginative work considering what I can do now, and hope to make them into, since I feel they deserve better then half baked, shoddy writing that I used to do which at present is embarrassing me to no end as I re-read it. -Shudders- -Enters his shame and embarrassment corner since Wes posted the links here, and at his old crappy stuff.-

How about this, then...you post an updated SARP-friendly version on the wiki, and we'll look at that instead of the old stuff? I know Star Army and its associated forces were pretty "inflated" back in their early days too, so I can sympathize.

I could do that, back then I applied squat in terms of innovation and some background science as well as imagination to them. I'm going to take a nap, -Got home from work just now.- and see what I can come up with.
