Before I start

I want to run something by the people in charge here before I spend two or three days writing up an extensive background for my character proposal.

I’m no stranger to Sci-Fi writing or RPGs so I like to think I know what I’m doing. I’m also something of an eccentric so more often then not my ideas come far out of left field. So understand I’m attempting something innovative and highly original here.

My idea, as it is right now, is to adapt a character from a story that I started working on but have abandoned for the time being because I can’t think of enough of a motivation to get the plot moving.

The aim of this is essentially to crate a complete outsider who finds herself in a galaxy full of new and strange things. She has grown up in a culture and lifestyle radically different from the one she finds herself in, she has to learn about it, adapt to it and find her way through life.

I’ll try to sum up the back story a little so you can see where I’m coming from. Before FTL, a large group of humans were cast out of Sol System by a tyrannical empire now long forgotten. It was expected that these exiles would live out the last of their lives and die in deep space. But they adapted to survive. Over countless generations they have lived in the space between stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, traveling at sub light speeds and living out their lives in large mechanical personal ships with their bodies in a kind of stasis. Their society divided into casts and highly tribal. With adaptation and genetic manipulation, it is difficult to define them as “Humans” although they still superficially appear the same.

As time passed, humanity expanded out into the universe and left them far behind, until the Exiles discovered the Relics. A race of AIs long abandoned by their creators. The Relics, who saw the Exiles as equals because of their mechanical bodies, bestowed FTL upon the Exiles and helped to unite the various warring clans. Three generations later, the exiles are hard at work building their Deep space empire in their home galaxy, far removed and unconcerned with the activities of other beings.

My character would be one such Exile, who-- through plot device I’ve yet to think of (suggestions wouldn’t hurt)-- has become lost far away from her people with only her personal ship/body and her Relic (A kind of AI familiar) to help her.

Her technology and way of thinking would be considered archaic by Star Army standards and she’d know almost nothing about anything. Which would provide some interesting character interactions.

^ I call that a summery, just imagine how much I’d be writing up for the full background.

Thoughts? Comments? Yes/No?

First of all, this might need to be moved to the proper forum (aka: the lounge), but you are new here so don't worry about it.

Anyways, back to the topic, the Sol system, Milky Way Galaxy, Earth, etc. don't exist in this setting. At least, everyone is somehow unaware of them. Everyone wants their characters to be special, but yours might be a bit... 'too' special. I have no real authority to say for sure, but if the higher ups allow you to try this, then good luck. Your story might need a bit of fixing to flow with the rest of SARP, but it's always nice to have flexible ideas. I hope we can RP sometime. Good luck and have fun!

By all means move it to the correct place if you feel it necessary.

As for awareness of Earth, The Exiles themselves only refer to it in legends and allegory, with the long generations of separation they would have no actual knowledge of it. I only mentioned them as a means of explanation for the Exiles’ origins.

My aim is not a “Special” character but a different character. To explore the differences and similarities, the core “Humanity” of the character through her journey of discovery. As well as an exploration of human nature through an allegorical sci-fi setting.

This character would be completely outside of everything she’s ever known, even her organic body is a mystery to her. Many of the greatest Sci-Fi stories have been about exploring human nature through a different perspective. That is my aim, and it is one I wish to share and explore together with the players of this forum.

This would work best for a Indie plot, and you need Wesley to come by to give a nod to the idea...

However, otherwise this idea if fairly good.

It runs in a similar vein of the Freespacers, so maybe you want to look into them. Wouldn't be able to do the same thing, but I am fairly certain you could gear something to your liking that wouldn't need to much work to do.

Welcome, by the way.

Conceptually, I like it quite a bit, however, it would be a lot easier to pass by the red tape by assimilating your idea into one of the already created races, albeit one with less than normal tech perhaps. If you would like to create a whole new race, I would recommend starting out with a more normal character in one of the larger races to get a feel for the setting. Once you've been here for a while and know a bit more about the setting, you would have a chance at creating an approvable race.

I expected that I might have to shelve the idea, but given that it wasn’t rejected outright I have hope. Unfortunately adapting the character to the Free Spacers simply wouldn’t be feasible. Although similar in many respects, the Exiles culture and personalities are very divergent. The Exile Clans were at war until the Relics united them, so there would be a latent aggression in their nature. Also, Freespacers are prone to Agoraphobia, where as Exiles would actually be claustrophobic. They are used to their minds being interfaced with a mechanical body with all its senses exposed to open space. All the vastness of the cosmoses stretching before them. In their organic bodies, with their range of vision so limited, it would be very unnerving.

Given these and other personality and cultural differences, there’s just no reconciling the character with them. Better to wait.

I did some extensive world building for the Exile Concept, like I said in my first post I had been intending to use them as a main race of an original work but I couldn’t think of a unifying plot motivation. If you have any questions or want to just discuss the ideas behind them, feel free to ask. Now I’m off to create a character for one of the existing factions.

It sounds like you're interested in adding a new culture to the setting rather than just a character.

There's no problem with that in itself, but creating a whole new culture just to suit your character is problematic because in most of these cases, these one-player civilizations lack detail. Basically, if we let you introduce this character, it also adds his civilization to the universe. Because, for the consistency and quality of the SARP universe, we require major changes to the setting to go through a review and approval process, the civilization in question--even if it isn't planned to appear in the setting outside of this character--would have to undergo a review process and be approved before the character could be approved.

Creating a culture/civilization is a ton of work.

At this point, since you're new to Star Army, I do not recommend it. This is because:

1) the work can be overwhelming
2) you don't experience existing Star Army culture in RP
3) you don't have any comrades in your new faction

My recommendation is to create a Freespacer or a Nepleslian version of this character. Both are starfaring races where there could be the sort of isolation-by-distance-to-cause-interestingness that you're going for.

Edit: Some of my post might no longer be relevant, since I started it several hours ago.
