Considerations on the Ranking System

For the enlisted ranks, all the gold ranks are Jōtō (Superior), all the coppery ones are Ittō (1st Class), and all the blued ones are Nitō (2nd Class). The pin without a backing is the Santō (3rd Class).

Why not make the Juni ranks match up? Currently, there is no Jōtō (Superior) version, even though there is a gold rank. Each rank is off by one when compared to the enlisted scheme.

Suggestion: Santō (3rd Class) Juni should be a blue pin without backing and the the other pins should be renamed accordingly so that the enlisted and warrant officer pins match. Even if we don't create the new WO rank, we should rename the pins from Ittō, Nitō, and Santō to Jōtō, Ittō, and Nitō.

Unrelated Side Note: Additionally, we might consider adding a whole new set of enlisted ranks (Heisa) to make them closer to the officer ranks: Hei, Heisa, and Heisho. This would afford for 3 more enlisted ranks. This, of course is optional and probably not needed at this time.

There seems to be some confusion with what rank is the standard rank for commanding a type of ship, so let me mention that, too. Currently, the officer ranking system in relation to ship commands in the Star Army of Yamatai is as follows:

  • Juni (Warrant Officers): Command crewless warships as needed.
  • Shoi: Training craft only.
  • Chui: Attack Craft (Ketsueki Attack Ships)
  • Taii: Escort Ships (Arashi-class), Scout Ships (Yui-class)
  • Shosa: Gunships (Irim-class)
  • Chusa: Cruisers (Ayame-class)
  • Taisa: Battleships (Yuumi-class), Carriers (Kyoto-class)
  • Shōshō: Star Fortress (Iori-class), 5 COs per fleet.
  • Chujo: Flagships (Chiharu-class), 4*) COs per fleet.
  • Taisho: Commands a fleet. Only one per fleet.
*Possibly 5 if the Taisho is "roving" in a personal warship or to various flagships as needed.

I'll see what I can do about that. I think what I'll do is create a series of standard rank pins that can be worn by all fleets, and replaced as fleets make customized ones with their logos in the middle.
