(Tell me if this technology is already available!)
I'm not too familiar with manufacturers, so please excuse me for not providing a rich history for the item.
The cortex chip is a brainwave-recording equipment implanted in the brains of mecha and craft pilots, shielded in a hypoallergenic capsule (in order not to damage the brain). Every memory, reaction and knowledge, including major personality traits is stored in the chips' miniature storage drives. The main purpose is not to create a link between pilots or pilots and HQ, but to use the experience of the pilots later.
The cortex chip's main feature is that when removed from the remains of a dead pilot, the chip can be attached to computer systems and be used for:
1. Research new strategies and possible weaknesses in training
2. Operate automated weapons systems with the added flair and thinking of a live person. Computers usually tend to be monotonous, while thinking supercomputers are too expensive.
3. Operate automated craft in extremely dangerous situations without risking valuable lives. Also, this allows the reuse of the best pilots in new crafts.
The system will act accordingly to that of the recorded mind. This means that the actions of the automated system will be determined not only by the battle-wits of the artificial pilot, but personality traits and memories as well.
The chips allow only a limited learning curve; the artificial chip's abilities depend mostly on already recorded info.
The drives can be duplicated with ease.
Beware: if the enemy should put hands on your cortex chips, they will use your best pilots against you.
The chip is available as implants only in the military of course.
