RP: 21st Fighter Sq Crew Interviews

Hayashi, Hachirou

ON - YSS Heitan - UX-06

The YSS Heitan floated in a parking position above Chiharu Starfortress. At present the new carrier had barely a quarter of her compliment on board. Yet despite the low number of crew members, the corridors were busy with personnel moving from one place to another. The Heitan was preparing to get under way along with the other ships that comprised the start of the 2XF.

Atsui after dropping her bags in her cabin made her way to the flight crew lounge. This ships too new, hell you can smell the paint, and where are the crew? What's the hurry to ship out with a fraction of the crew. At least the Taisho promised me a experienced XO, and we're getting the first Kawarime fighters that are manufactured. I can't wait to test them out. The lounge like everything else on the ship was new. An almost unnatural feeling, seeming almost antiseptic. She found a table against the wall and took a seat with her back to the wall. An attendant in the lounge came over and she ordered a bottled water. She doubted they had any of the good stuff available yet.

Hachirou Hayashi found himself in the docking bay of the YSS Heitan. It felt odd, with only a few crew here or there -- he had known that the Second Expeditionary Force was only recently brought back from the grave, but he hadn't expected anything like this.
A Skeleton Crew for a skeleton fleet. He thought.

Hachirou tossed his duffel bag -- previously on the floor -- across his shoulders, and was off. He smartly requested a map from the AI system of the Heitan to guide his way. Through the corridors, elevators, until he had every turn memorized into his digital mind. Finally, he tossed his duffel into his quarters.

Now, He thought, to find the Numa-Chui.

"HIROMI, Can you tell me where Numa-Chui is currently located?" Hopefully the Heitan's AI would tell him. If not... He would probably just wait until she found him.

HIROMI replied promptly, her contralto voice just a shade off sounding natural something that would change as the AI matured. "Certainly Hayashi-Shoi, Numa-Chui is currently in the Safety Valve, a lounge for flight crew on deck twelve. I can relay directions to your communicator if you like?"

Hachirou murmured a quiet "No, Thank you." And was off. He needed to get familiar with the ship.

After a minute or two, he arrived. He saw a Chui -- more than likely The Chui -- seated against the wall. Taking a gamble, (seeing as there honestly weren't that many of the same rank currently on the ship) Hachirou approached the woman.

With a respectful bow, Hachirou presented himself. "I am Hachirou Hayashi-Shoi, assigned to the 21st Squadron."

Atsui took a moment to assess the Shoi in front of her. For a brief moment she thought the person might be a Neko, but he was unmistakably a man. She returned his bow, and motioned to one of the empty chairs, "Greetings Hayashi-Shoi, please take a seat. I'd offer to buy you a drink, but at the moment the bar is closed."

Taking the Chui's offer, Hachirou sat.

"It's fine. I'm not particularly in want of a drink anyway." He said.

"To be honest, neither am I but this is probably the best chance to drink at the moment. Did Mikasa-Taisho give you an insight into her plans for the 2XF?" Atsui inquired. Taking a sip from her bottled water.

"No. I was not enlightened to any plans other than the official objective of the Second XF." Hachirou said, his curiosity piquing.

"Basically when we leave UX-06, for the most part we are going to be completely on our own, and operating behind enemy lines in a manner of speaking. That's why the Taisho is gathering all the materials, and equipment she can get now. We are supposed to protect the SSS operating out there, and gathering information on the enemy, and attacking when the opportunity permits." Atsui paused.

"So, our first priority is to the Scientists and Colonists when we finally set up our base of operations, and our second is to recon and possibly destroy NMX positions and forces? Just seeing if I have this straight, Ma'am." Hachirou said.

"Technically our first priority is to protect the frontier and fight the NMX. But the Scientists and colonists are a vital part of our supply chain. Daichi is out at the edge of the sector. Beyond the current line of Mishhu controlled space. So regular shipments from Yamatai aren't going to happen. With KMS under siege at the moment, getting stuff from them is problematic at best. So we have to develop our own supply chain independent." Atsui said, "Personally I am looking forward to the opportunity."

"Indeed." Was all Hachirou said, now deep in thought.

"Our challenge is to put together the 21st Squadron and get them battle ready. The Taisho is going to put out a call for volunteers before we leave. But I honestly don't expect us to get a lot of pilots. Yamatai has depended upon power armors to the point that fighter pilots are rather rare." Atsui said.

"Yes, but thankfully volunteers for Pilot training has gone up. We might be able to get a few before we leave. If not, over time we'll still get new pilots. Either from KMS or from Yamatai ships slipping through the lines to us." He said.

Hachirou rubbed his face as he thought, "It'll still leave us shorthanded Pilot-wise. Possibly shorthanded with the Technicians as well -- but that'll really be the Fleet's problem. Everyone is going to be shorthanded." He set his hands on the table as he finished the statement.

"I guess the best way to get people assigned to us is to get some reputation with the Taisho, neh?"

"Mikasa has promised we will get bodies, the only thing she can't promise is how trained they will be. So it will be up to us to take a bunch of lumps of coal, and turn them into diamonds." Atsui.

Hachirou grinned. "Fighting Diamonds, Numa-Chui?"

"Hmm, I like that, congratulations you just came up with our nickname. We are going to get soft probably green recruits and we need to shape them into a force to be dealt with. And between the war and our missions we will forge them in heat and pressure. Just like diamonds."

"Just like Diamonds." Hachirou agreed.

Akechi Minoru

ON
Location: Fort Shotou, Daichi, the Alert Squadron runway

The shuttle had only just landed as the ramp opened up to let Akechi Minoru out. The pilot, had been silent the whole trip, and urged the surgeon out so she could continue on her own way.

The runway for Fort Shotou was long, and seeing as it was on the dark side of the planet, the lights were set in brilliant blue and red lines. Off to one side, a Kawarime fighter taxied off and flew away.

Only one Hangar was lit up, however, and from the information Akechi had been told in his message, that was where he should head.

Stooping to exit out of the shuttle, duffle bag in hand, Minoru took a moment to look after the Kawarime lifting off into the star strewn black. The trip over had not been exciting, thankfully. A little silent though, with no one to talk to and the pilot being busy. He had spent it, then, looking over the specs for the Kawarime and trying to wrap his head around actually operating them. He brought his mind to the present. It was easy enough to see where he needed to go, so hefting the duffle containing his gear, he walked over towards the lit hangar.

As Akechi approached the hangar, he began to hear muffled rock music. A Kawarime came into view by the entrance, and a small figure was crawling over it, while on sat silently at a desk, seemingly doing nothing.

As he got closer, the music became louder, and it was clear that it was Aethersperm playing at full blast on a communicator. The figure on the Kawarime was a Neko, and the one at the desk looked like it could have been another. But the distance closed (and the music grew louder) and Akechi saw that it was just a very short Yamataian man watching him.

Wordlessly, the Neko on the Kawarime pressed something on her belt, and the music shut off.

"Who are you?" The man behind the desk growled.

Akechi bowed, though that served really only to accentuate his massive height. He found it likely that here, just as in Medical School, he would be easily the tallest being. 'nails that stick up get hammered down', said a voice in his head recalling an old proverb. He would have to make sure he didn't stick out more than usual then. Straightening out of his bow, he set his eyes straight ahead, his diction formal "Akechi Minoru, Santo Hei. I have been transferred to the 21st Fighter Squadron."

"Ah. I've been waiting for you." The man said, not rising. "I am Hayashi-Shoi, and I am also the XO of this squadron. Unfortunately, the Chui is unavailable right now, and I will be handling your interview."

With that, Hachirou gestured to the seat in front of the desk.

"I understand you are a doctor?"

"Thank you" Setting down his bag, Minoru took the seat offered, glad to be in a less awkward position of looking down at a superior officer. "Yes, I received my MD a few months ago."

"I also understand you have sworn an oath to pacifism?" Hachirou's eyes were searching, assessing the man before him.

"Its fallen out of practice with most doctors, but yes. I took an oath to uphold the 17 Principles, among which is to bring no harm." His face showed that he has likely been asked this before. He showed no indication of conflict in his voice, or hesitation in his answer.

"I'm impressed that you swore something like that, and kept to it. There are few willing to make such a commitment. It does, however, put you into a precarious position concerning your duties. Will you be able to perform under fire, Minoru-Hei? And are you willing to follow orders?" The Shoi's eyes narrowed, and the sounds of tools and maintenance ceased from the fighter behind Akechi.

He did not spare a look back, neither did Minoru's expression change "With all due respect, I do not see any conflict in performing either my duties as a soldier or a doctor. While it is true that I cannot harm even the NMX, I can still support my squad mates in their duties through other means than firing a weapon. The work of the Star Army saves lives, and oath-breakers don't have a place as a soldier or a doctor. That said, I put my faith in my superiors to use me in a way that does not comprimise my oaths."

Hachirou smiled. "Good answer. If it can be helped, we won't pressure you to break your oath. But I will personally hound your ass to learn everything that can be learned about the Kawarime. If the pilot is hurt, or killed, you will be taking over the flight controls. While in combat, you will perform your duties as an Electronic Warfare Operator. Countermeasure Pods, along with communication channel monitoring and sensor arrays all fall under your responsibility."

Hachirou sighed. "Unfortunately, because of the manpower shortage, you will also be handling your normal duties as a medic on the ground."

The short man shot a look at the fighter behind Akechi.

"In summary, you will need to be familiar with everyone on the squadron. You will be drilled, and operate as an EWO. Select a call sign, and... Welcome to the 21st Squadron." Hachirou grinned.

Akechi sighed with relief, glad that was over at least. "Thank you Hayashi-Shoi. I hope I can live up to those expectations. As for a call-sign..." He chuckled to himself, "I think 'Doc' would be appropriate."

Nekki Shin

ON

The Odori-class Medium Freighter carrying several volunteers for the 2XF arrived shortly after the Chiharu assumed orbit above Daichi. The Freighter docked with the Star Fortress to offload personnel and supplies. A blue haired Nekovalkyrja stood at the foot of the ramp directing personnel.

Shin adjusted his square framed glasses as he walked down the ramp, duffel bag full of his belongings swung over his right shoulder. The Yamataian pilot, with at least 10 battlepod kills in the last mission alone, was formerly a member of the YSS Illustrious' Onyx Wing, but after the Sharie-class had escaped from a NMX trap, he had requested transfer to the 2XF. Shin had heard that one of the new fighter squadrons on-board the YSS Heitan, the 21st, were looking for talented pilots, and if Shin was anything, he was a good pilot. The fact that he would be getting away from all the enemies he had made in the First was simply icing on the cake. Seeing that blue haired Neko directing traffic, the pilot put on his best face, and strode down the ramp towards her.

"Nito-Hei Nekki Shin, reporting."

The Neko took a moment to consult her ICP. "Greetings, I am Manami-Nitô Heisho. Numa-Chui is waiting for you in Wardroom 15A. This datapad has the directions for you. You can store your equipment in one of the lockers against the wall over there. No sense carrying it around since one way or another you will be leaving the Chiharu." She said holding a datapad out to Shin.

"Thank You" Shin took the datapad, bowing to the Nito Heisho before turning away to place his bag in one of the lockers. Heading into the bowels of the Chiharu, the pilot frowned as he followed the directions on the datapad. It wasn't that Shin didn't like datapads, they were useful. A big huge ship like the Chiharu, to him, reminded him of his first assignment, the Senbu.

Atsui sat at one of the smaller tables in the wardroom. She nursed a cup of the strongest coffee available from the buffet. She reviewed the folder in front of her, it contained the service records for the next batch of Fighter Pilots being assigned to the 21st.

Let's see the next pilot is Nekki-Nitô Hei. Well he's had some actual combat experience in a fighter, which is good. Nice to have someone not entirely green. Hmm... seems to have had a few rough spots in his career. Well, that's nothing new to me. she thought. Her comm unit beeped and a quick glance showed that Shin was on his way to the wardroom.

Even though it was at least a year ago, Shin was still not comfortable on ships that reminded him of it. Oh well, at least his commanding officer would (probably) be sane. And maybe his wingmates won't hate him for no reason at all. The Vermillion-banged yammie shrugged, finding himself in front of the door to Wardroom 15A. Well, no reason to make a bad impression.
"MEGAMI, please inform Numa-Chui that I have arrived, and that I request permission to enter."

"Permission granted Nekki-Hei, you may enter when ready. the MEGAMI replied. Atsui closed the folder and watched the door to observe her newest pilot enter.

Shin promptly entered the wardroom, giving his prospective commander a curt bow, followed by a salute. "Nito Hei Nekki Shin, reporting, Maam!" Shin felt a wave of relief wash over him. Unlike Shifuda-Heisho, who was insane, or Kuriko, who probably only received her permission because she was cute, Numa-Chui looked to be a sane, normal Yamataian, who's relative age made her seem more like an older sister, or an aunt.

Atsui took a moment to let her pale-blue eyes run over the Hei's appearance. Her gaze paused a moment at the sight of glasses on his face. Curious nothing in his service profile about visual impairment. she thought.

Motioning to the seat in front of her she said. "Please be seated Nekki-Hei, since this is not your first assignment I will dispense with some of the more traditional questions."

"Yes Ma'am." Shin quickly sat down at the proffered seat, hands resting in his lap as he sat up straight. He stared directly ahead, not making eye contact with Numa-Chui, but not avoiding it either. Reaching up, he somewhat nervously adjusted his glasses, before returning his hand to his lap.

"I see in your jacket that you have had some disciplinary issues in the past. As far as I am concerned, that is where they will stay; in the past. The Secondary Expeditionary Fleet is about second chances as much as it is about breaking new ground." she paused to let her words sink it.

"First I want you to know what you are getting yourself in for. We are out here on the edge of known space. We are short of supplies, personnel, and equipment. For the most part we are on our own, so we need to make the most of what we have. And from time to time, we will have to improvise. Any problems with that?" She asked.

"Yes Ma'am! That just means I won't get bossed around by some loose Neko who had a fun time with some princess just for the promotion. No disrespect to the Ketsurui, of course Ma'am. Besides, having all that pressure only makes it so that I don't got no choice but to perform to 200% of is needed of me. "

Atsui raised an eyebrow at Shin's first comment. "A word of caution Nekki-Hei, it is never prudent to speak disrespectfully of other officers. So leave that kind of talk behind you." she said calmly.

"I see you have flown the Hayabusa on the Illustrious. You will find the Kawarime are a different craft entirely. They are small fast, and easily reconfigured for missions. Mikasa-Taisho ordered their construction specifically to combat the Mishhu battlepod threat. What do you think is your greatest asset that you bring to the squadron Nekki-Hei?"

"I shot down at least 10 Battlepods while I was flying on the Lusty, in a craft that is big, heavy, and hard to turn. I'm two fifths of the way to becoming an ace pilot. If I'm allowed to be cocky, Ma'am, I'm a good pilot. And I at least do my best to work with my wingmates. If I'm in your squadron, I'll make sure to give it my all, 100% of the time." Shin paused, smiling a bit. "So, I guess you can say that my greatest asset that I'm bringing to the wing is my upbeat attitude and personality."

Atsui made a mental note that Shin's moods were a bit mercurial, but she would not hold that against him.

"Well, once the rest of the pilots arrive we'll be seeing about assigning people Wingmen. While we are assigned to the Heitan the 2X-F21 is currently on detached duty on Daichi." She opened the folder in front of her and pulled out a slip of paper. She quickly signed and initialed the form.

"There is a shuttle heading to Fort Shotou in thirty minutes, be on it. When you land have someone take you out to the Alert bunker. That is where the rest of the squadron is located. Give this to Kayo-Santô Hei when you arrive. She'll see to issuing you an fighter, and your unique issue items. After you see her; find yourself an empty bunk and stow your gear. There is a pre-flight meeting tomorrow morning at 0700 hours. I expect to see you there." she said handing him the paper and a squadron patch.

"Welcome to the Fighting Diamonds Nekki-Hei." She said proffering her hand.

Shin stood up, eagerly shaking his new commander's hand. "Thank you for the chance to prove myself, Ma'am!" The pilot broke the handshake, and bowed to Numa-Chui before heading out of the wardroom, rushing to grab his stuff and catch the shuttle before it left.

Silic Vas

ON
Landing bay of the YSS Heitan in orbit above the planet Daichi. A T8 Kuma Shuttle arrives in Gamma deck and the pilot comes out of the cockpit looks at the passenger, "Well here we are. I take it you are being assigned to the 2XF?" The neko inquired.

Silic stood out of his seat and shouldered his duffle bag "I didn't come out here for the sights." he said cheekily.

The brown haired Neko smiled, "Too bad, I hear the sights are fairly nice down on the planet. You are to report to Numa-Chui in the squadron briefing room. If you get lost the MEGAMI Hiromi can give you directions. Good Luck." she said opening the side hatch of the shuttle.

Silic stepped past her "Thanks," he said, more quietly for himself he added "I'll need it." before stepping onto the deck proper and surveyed the scene.

Gamma deck was a bustling scene of activity. A variety of small craft were offloading personnel and equipment. Across from the shuttle door was clearly visible that lead deeper into the carrier.

He looked back and forth in confusion for a few seconds before settling on the exit, moving between piles of equipment and people. He wasn't hurrying, instead he looked in curiosity at the proceedings around him, accidentally stumbling on something while distracted before heading into the corridors.

Atsui was sitting the Squadron briefing room, or at least would eventually be used for it. Currently most of the 21st was currently down on the surface on Alert duty providing protection for the installations planetside. Another recruit coming in, finally starting to get a reasonable number of personnel If we actually get into a scrap up we'll be able to engage the enemy. she thought.
Looking at the folder in her hand, she noticed a note attached.

Silic Vas-Itto Hei
This soldier distinguished himself in the Battle of the South Gate under my command. With some molding I believe he could have a distinguished career.
Shin Kiyoshi, Taisa

"Comes with a recommendation from the head of Command. And has some combat experience, though not in a fighter." Atsui said to herself.

The fore-mentioned soldier stuck his head in through the door sill Please tell me I've got the right one this time. he thought desperately, the giant pink volumetric arrow pointing out of sight towards the door made that unlikely, but had been fooled by computers before. "Uhm, Numa-chui?" he asked, still standing outside.
Atsui turned from the podium to face the soldier who had entered, "Greetings Silic- Itto Hei. I am Numa Astui-Chui, call sign Solitaire. Please come in, take a seat. So you served with Shin-Taisa at the South Gate. I heard it got pretty hairy during that engagement."

Silic stepped into the room and bowed for politeness's sake, straightening "Yes, I was under Shin-Taisa's command briefly during the battle, I doubt I impressed her very much." he replied, changing his duffel bag to his left hand and walking towards the podium.

Atsui returned his bow with a lesser one, "I am not so sure about that. You impressed her enough that she sent a personal note along with your folder recommending you. If you wish to stand that is fine this will not take very long." she said.

"Well, as you already know the 2XF is starting out fresh out here. We are short on manpower, equipment, and resources. So getting any soldier transferring in is a good thing. What made you want to join the 21st Squadron?, and how do you feel about riding in a fighter?" She asked.

"I was put up for transfer after the battle of South Gate, too many crew for not enough ships apparently. When the personnel officer told me about the position I was told they were in desperate need of experienced personnel, I didn't question the position." Silic answered, he leaned sideways quizzically "Why did you ask about fighters?" he asked, a tinge of uncertainty entering his voice.

A mechanical finger twitched "I'm pretty sure I'm an engineer, not flight crew, ma'am?"

"As I said, we are short on manpower. And while we will need your services as a Engineer to help maintain the fighters, We could use you as an EWO, operating the defensive systems on one of the Kawarime so that the pilot can concentrate on killing Mishhu. Our Flight Surgeon will be riding in a back seat which will allow him to observe the squadron in action and learn their jobs as he also acts as an EWO. Shin-Taisa did say that she thought you had potential. And well a Diamond gets made under pressure. So you up for it?" Atsui asked.

Mishu mystery sausage! Silic exclaimed mentally, Personnel didn't say they were this desperate! assessing his options quickly, considering trying to argue his way out the situation. But something in the way the officer held herself in front of him told him it wouldn't work. Was it something in the jawline? He couldn't say, instead he tried a different strategy.

"Surely there are more qualified people here than myself. I'm sure Personnel can wrangle you a better candidate." he said, not exactly pleading, but not breaking his subordinate status "Perhaps someone not missing body parts?" he questioned, drumming his mechanical fingers once against the strap of his duffel.
"Right now Silic-Hei, your fate is in my hands. Shin-Taisa seems to think you have the stuff. Wants you to be molded. So, consider yourself being molded Soldier." Atsui picked up the transfer paperwork and quickly signed it.

"There is a shuttle heading down to the surface in 30 minutes. When you land have someone take you out to the Alert bunker. That is where the rest of the squadron is located. Give this to Kayo-Santô Hei when you arrive. She'll see to issuing you a fighter, and your unique issue items. After you see her; find yourself an empty bunk and stow your gear. There is a pre-flight meeting tomorrow morning at 0700 hours. I expect to see you there in flight-suit ready to fly. Is that clear?" she said handing him the paper and a squadron patch.

"Welcome to the Fighting Diamonds Silic-Hei, now move out." Atsui said.

Silic recoiled slightly at the rebuke, any hope of wriggling out of flying was gone now. He sighed quietly, surrendering "Yes ma'am. See you at seven tomorrow" he replied. Bowing to take his leave before practically fleeing the room with his tail between his legs. This assignment was going to be an experience.

OFF.

Tsukino Ren

ON

The Odori-class Medium Freighter that Tsukino was travelling on to Daichi came along side of the YSS Heitan in orbit.
Across the Odori's speakers a mechanical voice called out. "All Personnel Transferring to the Heitan should report to the shuttle bay immediately."

Tsukino Ren scurried through the freighter quickly gathering her scattered things from her room, and the shared rooms that they had spread to, shoveling them into her satchel then bounding at a rapid clip through the halls to the shuttle bay "I'm coming, I'm coming!"

A blond haired Yamataian male was standing by a T7 Raccoon shuttle. Looking at a clipboard, as Ren approached she could see he was an Jôtô Hei. Several Neko's and a couple of Yamataians entered the shuttle and he seemed to be checking them off a list.

He looked up at Ren, "Tsukino-Santô Hei I presume." he said as the Neko came rushing up.

Ren showed up at the end of the line, bowing energetically to the man "Hello sir!" She said "Sorry for my lateness." She bowed again "Tsukino Ren reporting sir!" she shouted enthusiastically.

"Yes sir! Santô Hei!"

"I'm not an officer Tsukino, I work for a living. Grab a seat so we can cross over to the Heitan." he said with a smile.

"Certainly" she said, flashing a warm smile, then scrambling into the shuttle. She took a fairly cramped seat, obviously not the choice one, partly because most of the others had been taken and partly because she wasn't 'greedy' for good seats

The Yamataian stepped into the shuttle did one last headcount and shut the door. He made his way to the cockpit and closed the door. The shuttle powered up and rotated smartly and sailed out of the shuttle bay. The pilot obviously wanted to give the passengers a look at what would soon be their new home. The shuttle took a route that flew over the Heitan, affording a view of the carrier set against the planet Daichi. Several of the crew members took the opportunity to look out the windows at the new carrier. The shuttle then arced downward and flew towards the lower landing bay on the carrier. The shuttle set down on the deck with barely a sound. The pilot came back through the compartment and opened the hatch. "There will be a Santo-Hei waiting for you when you disembark. She will give you instructions where to proceed to." He said opening the doors.

"Thank you!" she said with a broad grin, then she scrambled to the hatch, and poked her head out of it for a quick peek around before she tumbled out of it, looking eagerly for the Santo-Hei who was to help her learn where to go.

Standing about 15 feet from the shuttle a blue haired Neko stood wearing the Star Army Working Uniform, she held a stack of data pads in her arm and was looking at the shuttle expectantly.

Ren snapped to attention, wanting to make a good impression, then she parade steps out of the shuttle, tripped, and fell upon her face with a loud squeek. She picked herself up, blushing hotly "Tsukino Ren, Santô Hei reporting!" She said, snapping off a salute as she tried to pretend she had not just tripped. Unfortunately for her she lacked the feline charm it took to pull that trick off, and instead looked terribly embarrassed.

The Neko attempted to keep from laughing at the young neko, but some of the mirth made it to her eyes. "Tsukino-Santô Hei, let me see." she said sifting through the pads. "Ah here you go. 2X-F21- Fighting Diamonds. That's Numa-Chui's unit. She is waiting for you in the squadron briefing room." she said handing the pad to Ren. "I would suggest that you attempt to enter the room with a bit more decorum.

Ren blushed hotly taking the pad "Ah, sorry about that" she said. Her flush ran along her face, pinkening most of her cheeks. It took all of her self control to walk, instead of run, to the squadron briefing room, and twice she caught herself skipping and had to pause for a moment to collect her thoughts. Her entrance into the briefing room was much more subdued, but her emotions were plain as day in the position of her ears, which were eagerly and attentively poking forward.

Numa Atsui was standing at the podium in the room. Her short auburn hair framing her face as she looked at a stack of papers. After a moment she looked up at the new arrival. "Can I help you Santô Hei?" she asked.

"Ah... hi!" She said, her lips breaking into a face splitting grin. "I'm Tsukino Ren, I'm new, I came aboard from the freighter. I'm reporting to duty ma'am! Do you have anything I could do?" she asked eagerly "I'm willing to do anything you need me to do to help out"

"You can start by reporting properly Santô Hei. That is if you hope to remain in my Squadron." Atsui said her voice going cold.

"Ah! Sorry! I was so enthusiastic I forgot! Tsukino Ren, Santo Hei, Reporting for interview as ordered, ma'am!" She half shouted in unrestrained enthusiasm, bowing eagerly then she snapped to attention

Atsui gave a slight bow in response to Ren according to her status. "Take a seat soldier, there is not a lot of time."

Ren grabbed a seat, then stared at it confusedly for a moment, before vaulting over the back and landing with a plop in it "Yes ma'am!" She said eagerly, her long hair touching the ground as she was now seated.

Well if there is an award for eager and enthusiastic, I would say she is a shoe-in. Atsui thought. "Well I can dispense with the most of the traditional questions. Let's cut to the chase. What makes you think you have what it takes to be a Fighting Diamond?"

Ren paused a moment to think, clearly actually considering the question "Well" she said "I might not be the smartest, or the quickest, or the strongest. I may be young and inexperienced in my field. But I am eager, adaptable, willing to learn, and I do possess a wide array of skills that allow me to take care of the things that the primary pilot of a vehicle might not want to handle. Also, I follow orders enthusiastically, though I allow room for interpretation, I try to do everything I am asked to. And while I am not brave, I am not a coward." she thought a moment longer, having actually calmed down a tad, though her body still looked like a wire humming under tension.

Atsui stepped away from the podium. "Well, that was a refreshingly honest answer. And one that speaks volumes about you." She looked at her datapad. "Hmm, well it would appear that Shin-Nitô Hei currently requires an EWO. Your training scores are more than satisfactory." She stepped back to the podium and picked up a piece of paper. She signed it and walked over to Ren.

Tsukino Ren took the paper with a bow, and an enthusiastic grin quickly spreading across her face like wildfire. Then she hugged Atsui "Thank you ma'am!" she said eagerly, giving the other woman a quick hug then letting go. She bowed again, her grin getting wider every second "I'll do my best! I'll make sure you don't regret choosing me!"

"There is a shuttle heading to Fort Shotou in twenty minutes, do not miss it. When you land have someone take you out to the Alert bunker. That is where the rest of the squadron is located. Give this to Kayo-Santô Hei when you arrive. She'll see to assigning you to a fighter, and your unique issue items. After you see her; find yourself an empty bunk and stow your gear. There is a pre-flight meeting tomorrow morning at 0700 hours. I expect to see you there." she said handing her the paper and a squadron patch

Tsukino Ren affixed the patch with a flourish to the appropriate spot, looking incredibly proud of herself. She grinned, gave Atsui another hug, and bounded off towards the shuttle moving far more rapidly then the situation demanded. She appeared to be skipping

"Thank you!" She called again on her way out

Munkata Yaeko

ON

The T8 Kuma shuttle transferring passengers docked in the lowest bay on the YSS Heitan. There were four passengers for this trip, most of them wearing the red panels marking them as Technicians. Once the shuttle was secured, the pilot a red headed Nekovalkyrja came out of the cockpit and opened the side door.

"There is a soldier standing by with your assignments. Have a good day and Welcome to the Heitan." She said motioning to the door.

"Thank you," said the slightly frightened Neko. She grabbed her bags, which she struggled to throw over her shoulder, and then head out the door. Note to self, work out a little more. Once she was out of the shuttle she looked around for the soldier in question

The soldier was fairly easy to spot, he was a Yamataian, with short black hair. He was surrounded by other soldiers wanting their assignments.

The brown haired Neko spotted the soldier and rushed over as fast as her little legs could carry her. Once she reached him she quickly bowed and said, "Santo Hei Munkata Yaeko reporting sir."

The soldier took a moment to consult his ICP. "Let me see, ah here you are, 21st Squadron under Numa-Chui." He handed her a datapad. "This has the directions to the briefing room. She is there currently."

Yaeko accepted the datapad with a giddy squeak before saying, "It was a pleasure meeting you," and continuing on her way. After several minutes of wandering, and getting lost one or two times, Yaeko found the briefing room. She set her bags down next to her door and then knocked twice before entering. "Munkata Yaeko reporting for an interview with Numa-Chui," she said with a deep bow.

Atsui took a chair and set it next to the podium in the briefing room. She took a moment to take sip of her coffee, it was just warm enough that she could not call it tepid. Well, Hayashi-San should be pleased, we are finally getting our pilots. Talk about a mixed bag though, most of them are barely out of flight school. But that just means we have the opportunity to teach them fly right. she thought.

The sound of person brought her out of her thoughts, and she took a moment to study the person before her.

Yaeko approached the person and said, "So I presume you are the Chui that I was told about?"

Atsui stood up and gave her tunic a brief tug to ensure it was straight. "Yes, I am Numa-Chui. I have been expecting you, sorry but I was lost in thought when you came in."

"Please have a seat and we can commence with your interview." she said motioning to the chairs.

"Of course," the girl said very happily, "And no apology needed, I do the same thing all the time." She sat down in a chair and looked at Atsui with a big smile.

"I see you were assigned to the Illustrious, and that you saw some combat during your brief stay. Is there a reason you chose to transfer to the 2XF?" Atsui asked.

"To be honest the Illustrious wasn't a very exciting ship. They didn't have much work for me and in the six to seven months we only saw combat once."

"Well, that will not be a problem here in the 2XF. At the moment we are short of just about everything except for work. As such our missions will probably be quite varied. In fact at present we have several members of the squadorn doing double duty. What would you said is the single most valuable thing you bring to the 2X-F21?" she asked.

Yaeko pondered the question for a quick moment before responding, "Well, I'm terrific at my specializations, Communications. One good part about having nothing to do for six months is that you start to tinker with things, see how they're built, how to make them better, and exactly how they work. I'm one of those people where if I put my mind to something ill go the full 200% and not only learn the skill, but everything that could possibly have to do with the skill, although I'm not good at many other things."

"Well the day you stop learning is the day you died, is my motto. So I am sure you will have plenty of learning opportunities. At present it would appear that we will not have an EWO to pair with you. Do you think that will present a problem for you?" Atsui asked reaching for her cup.

"Well, I'm sure at first I will be at a slight disadvantage, especially since, admittedly, I'm not one of the best pilots in the world. But I'm sure that with some practice I will learn to use it to my advantage."

Atsui took a sip of her coffee and grimaced, it had gotten cold enough that it was no longer drinkable. "Well you are a Valkyrja so you will be able to access the countermeasure pods via SPINE. So I am sure you will adapt. Do you have a preference of a Callsign?" She asked dropping the cup in the trash can.

"I totally agree with you there," Yaeko responded with a smile. "And the way I see it is that if your going to be living with people and trusting them with you life, you should at least do them the courtesy of allowing them to pick an embarrassing name for you."

Atsui took a moment to consider the young pilots words. She picked up the transfer paperwork and quickly signed her name at the bottom. "Well, if you change your mind you have until 0700 hours to pick one for yourself." She walked over and held out the paperwork. "Welcome to the Fighting Diamonds. The next shuttle for Fort Shotou leaves in an hour. Make sure you are on it. When you get to the fort, have someone take you out to the Alert Bunker, which is where the Squadron is currently been detached to. Our Admin Kayo-Hei will assign you a fighter, issue you your equipment. Find yourself a bunk, stow your gear and then take some time to get familiar with the base. We have a mission briefing tomorrow at 0700." She said.

"Aye Chui," Yaeko said as she took the paperwork. "I'll make sure I don't miss the shuttle. Thank you very much ma'am." Yaeko quickly bowed and then head back out the door of the briefing room, grabbing her bags as she passed by.

Atsui watched as the Neko dashed out of the room. "Well, only a few more to go. But first I need to find a pot of coffee." she said to herself.

Ramirez, Ira

ON
Location: Shirakawa no Iori at the border between the UOC and Yamatai Star Empire.

Shin Kiyoshi walked into one of the many lounges on the station, she was just looking for a place to kill some time before her transport departed.

As she entered Kiyoshi quickly scanned the room, a lone figure stood out among the many. A young man in a UOC uniform. Wonder what he is doing here? Guess I will go ask. she thought crossing the room.

Ira sat with a stone-faced expression as he brooded, looking at his uniform. The UOC had taken heavy losses in the initial engagements against the NMX invasion. He found the last string of events some what bothersome seeing The UOC had lost a lot of good men and women Ira however spoke to none of the Star Army personnel, he merely kept glaring at his feel, with his jaws clinched and his fists tightly balled.

Shin walked over to the UOC soldier and took a seat near him. "Good Day Peacekeeper, you're aways from home. What brings you to Sirakawa no Lori?" she asked.

Ira snapped his head up and immediately relaxed his hands and jaw. He was visibly exhausted and very tired. "My squadron and I engaged the NMX, I got knocked out at some point during the battle. When I woke up I had a Yamataian doctor asking me if I was Okay."

"There seems to be a lot of that going around. The blasted NMX seem to be everywhere, over running most places. Just had a nasty run in with them myself recently." she said. "Any word on the rest of your squadron?"

"Dead." He said softly as he exhaled. Ira did not let emotion seep into his raspy voice. He merely shut his eyes. "The recorder on my Tenshi caught most of the battle, we fought well, but we were not trained or equipped for that kind of combat."

Kiyoshi could sense the pain of this soldier, loosing troops was not a new thing for her. "If its any consolation these new Mishhu are unlike anything we've encountered in the past. And they are hitting everyone with as much force as possible. So I take it you are wanting a second chance with the NMX."

"Naturally." Ira said with out even opening his eyes. "I managed to get two of them, the explosions of their armor did not look like anything special. Not to sound cocky." Ira said opening his eyes and looking at her rank. "Ma'am."

"Then you must not have encountered their battlepods. They like to deploy them by the score in an attempt to overwhelm a ship. So you will be heading back to the UOC? Are they sending a transport to fetch you?" she asked.

"No, The UOC closed of all of its borders." Ira said dispassionately. " So I am stuck here on this ship." He said looking around.

"Seems like a waste of a good man. I don't suppose you would be interested in fighting with another group?" she inquired

Ira paused and folded his arms across his chest then he slowly spoke "What is the catch? Ma'am."

"Well you would have to sign a contract, but other than that no catch. Whenever you decide you want to return to the UOC, you contact me and I'll make arrangements for your transportation. I am currently on my way to my new command in the newly formed Second Expeditionary Fleet. We're looking for good soldiers." Kiyoshi answered.

Ira paused for a moment. "I am in, and I do not care what my rank is or my pay...I just want another crack at those monsters." He said clinching his teeth, but again not letting the anger slip into his voice.

Kiyoshi took a moment to consider the UOC insignia, "Well, given your prior service training, I think we can swing your rank as Shoi Kohosei, and you will have the choice of taking 150 KS a week or work for Prestige. That is your call. How do you feel about fighters?" she asked.

" Shoi Kohosei?" Ira said softly not remembering exactly Yamatai's military ranking system. He did not say much at the mention of money or prestige. "What ever you wish Taisa, a fighter sound like an excellent approach to such a tenacious enemy."?"

"Well the 2XF has a new class of fighters, the Kawarime class. Designed specifically to counter the battlepod strategy of the Mishhu. I know one of the squadron commanders, I will put a word in for you." Standing up Kiyoshi said, "Well, if you are going to do this, we should make it legal, lets get you a contract and swear you in Ramirez- Shoi Kohosei."

Ira stood up and Saluted the Taisa respectfully. "Aye Ma'am." Ira said smoothly. He would then follow the Taisa where ever she needed to take him and fill out the contract.

Kuwashima Saori

ON
Location: Daichi, Orbit, YSS Heitan
The shuttle carrying the latest shipment of soldiers for the Heitan left the freighter and to make its way over to the carrier. The was a definite presence of force in the area. Around the carrier there were groups of fighters flying patrols. Chiharu Starfortress hung in the region behind the starship.

The shuttle continued came around to the front of the Heitan and dove underneath. The pilot lined up for approach. The bottom of the carrier sped by and the shuttle decelerated and entered the bay at normal approach. A moment later the shuttle touched down.

Once the shuttle powered down engines the rear doors of the T7 shuttle opened. The silence of the passenger replaced by the myriad sounds of the bay activity.

Saori flexed her hands rhythmically in an almost unconscious manner. She looked up when the door open and took a deep breath before gathering her belongings and disembarking, making a conscious effort to still the excitement within.

At the foot of the ramp a NH-29 with green hair, and blue eyes stood in an Type 30A Female Duty Uniform, her Orange panels identifying her as Logistics, and her rank pin identifying her as a Nitô Juni. Shika held a clipboard in her hand and looked at Saori as she walked down the ramp.

"Name and rank, please." she asked.

"Kuwashima Saori, Santô Hei." Saori replied crisply, trying to keep her eyes from wandering around to take in the rest of the flight deck.

In the background was all activity, shuttles landing and offloading supplies. A number of shuttles were transporting injured soldiers from the surface.

Shika took a moment to look down her list, "Ah, found you. 21st Squadron, the Fighting Diamonds. That is Numa Atsui-Chui's unit. She is waiting for you in the 21st Briefing Room."

She picked up a datapad, "Hiromi, please guide Kuwashima-Santô Hei to her destination." she said aloud.

The datapad illuminated a path to the room, "Please follow the indicated path, if you require assistance please ask." the MEGAMI's voice said coming from the speakers above.

"Welcome to the Heitan." Shika said, "Good luck with your interview."

"Thank you." Saori said, somewhat distracted by the sight of the injured being brought in. She followed the illuminated path set out by the ship's MEGAMI towards the briefing room, the excitement cooling off with every step she took.

Atsui was pacing in the briefing room. Even though it was supposed to be for the 21st Squadron, most of the squadron had yet to set foot in it. She looked at the report on the recent attack, and thought. Well it could have been much worse. Casualties were low given the circumstances.

"Your pilot is enroute Numa-Chui." Hiromi chimed in via the speakers. "Thank you Hiromi." she said.

And as stated, Saori arrived in good order. "Kuwashima Saori Santô Hei, reporting as ordered, Chui." She announced herself after bowing respectfully to her superior.

Atsui returned the bow slightly in acknowledgment. "Please take a seat, and we can commence with your interview. How was your trip?" she asked moving to the podium.

"Uneventful, ma'am." Saori said, taking a seat where indicated. "Eager to get started, really."

"That is an attitude if not carried to far that will serve you well." Atsui said, then pausing while she refreshed her memory looking at Saori's personnel file. "So what made you choose the 2XF?"

"Wanted to go somewhere that would let me fly, ma'am. Not looking for glory or anything, just a place to be in a cockpit and make a difference is all." Saori spoke earnestly, a little plainly actually. "It got mentioned to me towards the end of my training cycle and I put in my request."

"Well, that is what we are out here for. To make a difference. The Heitan is the first starfighter carrier in the Star Army. Mikasa-Taisho commissioned her to combat the Mishhu threat." Atsui paused, "In fact we just had a rather rude surprise. Seems a scouting group of the damned squid found Daichi and launched an attack. We do not know if they radioed our location or not. Which is why the the fleet is on alert. How are you ground combat skills?"

"I've had basic training, passed all the courses, ma'am." Saori replied, though she did purse her lips slightly at the thought of having to foot-slog.

"Well, we are still quite short handed out here on the frontier, so we make due with what we have. Which means it is conceivable that we could be called on to perform a task without the benefits of our Kawarime. Where do you see yourself in say one years time Santo hei?"

"Still breathing, ma'am." Saori answered bluntly, with a quirky sort of smile. "In all honesty, I don't know. I haven't given it much thought, really, I've taken life as it comes to me. Though, yes, I'd like to be around for my second year if at all possible."

Atsui chuckled, "I think we all have thought in mind. Nothing wrong with not having any long term goals at the moment. War tends to make long term plans seem, redundant. Especially at your age. But should you develop an idea, please feel free to come to me and tell me." Atsui looked down at the paper and signed the transfer order.

"Okay, I am approving your transfer to the Fighting Diamonds. Once I dismiss you, locate Kayo Santô Hei. She will get you a billet, and issue your special equipment. We'll see about assigning you a fighter tomorrow once we get a status on the condition of our birds. Any questions Kuwashima-Santô Hei?"

"None at the moment, ma'am."

"Very well, you are dismissed. Once you get your gear secured, you might want to visit the Safety Valve Bar. Myself and several of the squadron will be meeting down there to let off some steam." Atsui offered.

"Ma'am." Saori said, bowing as she was dismissed. Upon exiting the room, she breathed a small sigh of relief.

Yamamoto Nobutora

ON
Location: YSS Heitan in orbit over Daichi. A T8 Shuttle transfers a lone passenger to the carrier's lower bay.

Atsui stepped out of the shower in her cabin and dried off. I really needed that shower. Helped release some stress. The mission yesterday was anything but a glowing success. But we did keep the NMX from Ryou. she thought. Dressing in a type 31 uniform she prepared herself to go to one of the conference rooms. She was expecting a new crew member.

She picked up the dossier she received and went to await the arrival of this Intel Officer.

Yamamoto Nobutora wasn't particularly attached to any particular fleet or unit in the Star Army, but the subtle differences of the Second Expeditionary Fleet insignia on the uniforms of the crew he saw all around from his own 1XF insignia made his analytic mind twitch. It wasn't enough to distract him from his path, however; he carried on straight through to the conference room indicated by the computer, though he had never been aboard a Heitan-class before. He reflected momentarily, as he paused outside the compartment's hatch, that he was much less nervous now than he was before his first interview with a prospective CO, over a year and a half before. Dismissing the thought, he hit the admittance key next to the hatch.

"Voice Print Required for Access," came the voice of Hiromi, the Heitan's AI queried.

Nobutora frowned at the hatch for a moment before giving in. “Yamamoto Nobutora – Santo Hei reporting as instructed for interview with Numa Atsui – Chui.”

"Voice Print Confirmed, You may enter when ready." Hiromi's voice said as the door opened.

Atsui looked up from the stack of paper she had and froze the image of the Teisatsu on the display. She looked towards the door so she could see this SAINT operative. Hard to really judge a person from a dossier that is mostly redacted so she wanted to talk to him candidly.

Tugging the bottom of his blouse down, Nobutora hit the admittance key again and, with the hatch now compliantly sliding open, he took two steps inside. In one fluid motion turned toward the officer, executed a perfect military bow, and again intoned “Yamamoto Nobutora – Santo Hei, reporting as ordered.”

Atsui inclined her head ever so slightly to acknowledge his bow. "Good day Yamamoto-Hei, please have a seat."

Straightening up, Nobutora continued forward and settled into a seat a respectful distance from the officer. Resting his hands on the table before him, he made eye contact with the fellow Yamataian. “Might I presume that you are in fact Numa Atsui – Chui, ma'am?”

"And would you simply take my word Yamamoto? I am in fact Numa-Chui, but what do you require for proof." She inquired a scowl on her forehead.

Aside from a slight furrowing of his brow, less obvious than the officer's scowl, Nobutora showed no sign of his inner flare of temper at the rudeness of how he was addressed. “No proof is necessary, ma'am. I simply am in the habit of confirming suspicions rather than acting precipitously on the basis of presumption or assumption.”

Atsui smiled at Nobutora, as she watched his facial features for tells. Years of poker playing had given her a good eye for such things. "Okay, we have established that you accept that I am Numa-Chui, and I accept that you are Yamamoto-Itto Heisho, but apparently you do not. Forgive my testing you, but in light of recent events, I do find myself a bit more wary at accepting people. Especially ones who's records are mostly blank. Shall we commence with the interview?"

Now Nobutora frowned openly. Itto Heisho? he thought to himself. The Chui apparently liked to play games so he chalked it up to another “test” and decided not to rise to the bait, for the moment at least. “I await your pleasure, ma'am,” he said in reply, without a trace of sarcasm in his tone. “Though it would be prudent to forewarn you that, as you have undoubtedly observed from my file, I will be unable to discuss a great deal of the details of my career with you. Meaning no disrespect, ma'am.”

"Not taken Yamamoto-Heisho, I am well aware of the fact that SAINT considers most of what it does to be too important for the rest of us in the Star Army to know about. My question is, when push comes to shove, can I trust you to deal with me on the level. My squadron those under my command are not chess pieces to be pushed around for some secret agenda." She look him square in the eye.

"When you serve under me, can I depend on you? Can I trust you?" she asked.

Nobutora nodded. “An understandable concern, ma'am. At present, I do not feel it is compromising to inform you that I am not operating under any classified set of orders other than standing SAINT contingencies. I cannot and will not promise that such will always be the case. You surely understand, ma'am, that all of us are chess pieces, tools if you will. If the Empire requires us to throw our lives away, we must comply, even if we know not the reason. It is my firm belief, however, that the Star Army and, in my particular experience, SAINT do not require us to sacrifice in vain.” He paused a moment, glancing down at the deck. “To answer your question directly, ma'am, you may depend on me to follow every lawful order and to firmly protect the interests and safety of the Empire, whatever that should require.”

Atsui smiled, "That's about as straight an answer that I could as for right now. I would hope that should a situation arise that you must operate under a restriction that you at least inform me of that fact even if you can not tell me what it is. On to the immediate situation, as our Intelligence Officer, obviously you will brief the squadron any intelligence available prior to a mission...and you will be flying one of the new Recon Teisatsu V8's. And obviously be available to brief me on any information I need as the Squadron Commander."

“Understood, ma'am,” said Nobutora. “Should I expect time to work on on the operation of my assigned craft? For that matter, how am I to fit into the squadron's operational TOE?”

"We are doing some reorganization of the squadron so we will be allotting some simulator time for all personnel. You will be assigned a wing-man, probably one that is in a like equipped fighter. I haven't finished deciding how I am going to pair up folks. But for all intents and purposes, you will be just another pilot with the squadron. I will hold you to the same standards as the rest."

Nobutora nodded once, in satisfaction. “Just as I would have it. Is there anything you need of me, ma'am?”

"Well first, put these on." she said sliding a new rank pin attacked to a 2XF patch over to him. "Can't have you walking around out of uniform. Then find Kayo our Admin. She will issue you your equipment, and get you a billet. I will see about fighter assignments tomorrow. Once you have stowed your gear you are on your own recognizance. You might wish to join the rest of us in the Safety Valve later."

“The Safety Valve, ma'am? What might-” Nobutora started to say, but trailed off as he looked down at the insignia. Quite unusually for him, he had to do a double take before it settled in. He shook his head, clearing it of the swell of emotion. “Forgive me, ma'am. I had assumed your use of 'Itto Heisho' and 'Heisho' were another test. An instance of my own words foretelling my error, I suppose. Thank you, ma'am.”

"You are welcome Heisho, the orders for your promotion came in while you were in-transit." She extended her hand. "Welcome to the Fighting Diamonds."

"It is an honor, Numa-Chui," he replied, rising from his seat and taking the proffered hand.

Sekimizu, Ellisif

Location: YSS Heitan, in orbit above Daichi
ON:
When Ellisif stepped off the shuttle that transported her to the Heitan, her communicator chirped signaling that a message had been received.

Ellisif's fingers idly fished the tweeting device from her pocket, she ignored the bustle of soldiers around her filing out in different direction and paused, looking ahead, she was somewhat in the way but didn't seem to particularly care. Her fingers moving automatically she looked at the message once it had been oepned.
TO: Sekimizu, Ellisif-Santô Hei
FROM: Numa Atsui-Chui
Congratulations on your appointment to the 21st Squadron. Unfortunately, at this time we are not on the Heitan. We have been detached to SX-06. Report to Sasaki-Santô Juni, in the training area of the Heitan. I have made arrangements to conduct your interview by holographic chamber. Sasaki-Juni will meet you at the starboard hatch to the landing bay.
EOM

The Nekovalkyrja read the message over a few times, taking her time, she cast a relax look to the starboard side of the hangar in pursuit of the Juni. Slowly she started a confident but subdued stride through the busy crowd toward the area, dressed in the type 31 working uniform and duffle bag hitched high on a shoulder. Long dark hair trailed behind her, probably her most distinguishing feature at this point.

As Ellisif made her way across, a female in a Type 31 Field Uniform with a Santô Juni rank patch on it. "Sekimizu-Hei, I presume." she said holding a data pad. "I have been expecting you."

The Santô Hei nodded silently, casting a short look to the datapad then back to the woman again.

The datapad had Ellisif' image and service profile on it. "Come with with me, I have made the necessary arrangements that Numa-Chui requested. So you are the newest Fighting Diamond. The Chui will be glad to have you. The Diamonds got cut up pretty good on their last mission." the Yamataian said as she turned and walked briskly away from hangar deck.

Ellisif remained a step or two behind at most, though her walk was a quiet stride rather than the hurried pace of the Juni, somehow she was able to move at pace but with a natural grace that exemplified her agile figure. She took her time to answer.

"I hope I will prove a capable replacement. Sasaki-Juni." She replied softly, her tone had quite an edge to it, though it was probably expected as her expression was rather vacant and haughty.

"Well, Numa-Chui is a fine officer, and a pilot. I've served under her in the past, and would gladly do it again." Sasaki lead them through a number of passages. She finally stopped at one of the training room doors. "You can leave your duffle bag here with me. I'll be waiting for you when you come out, and hopefully will be able to give you this?" she said holding a 21st Squadron patch.

Distant brown eyes rested on the patch for a moment, thin expressionless lips still as she looks up to the Juni once more. Turning briskly to the door she handed off her duffle bag to the side as it opened and stepped into the training room.

Ellisif stepped into what appeared to be a squadron briefing room. At the front of the room the commander could be seen standing near a podium. She was wearing a working uniform, her short auburn hair framing her face. She watched Ellisif enter.

The Neko paused for a moment to look around the briefing room before her eyes locked on the Chui and she headed toward her with a smart pace.

Stopping nearby she paused to bow. "Sekimizu Ellisif Santô Hei reporting for interview, Ma'am."

Atsui returned Ellisif's bow with a much more shallow one given her status. "Please take a seat and we will get things rolling. I apologize for the unconventional arrangement. But we are out here at Saiki Kouan's request, and I wanted to get you into the squadron as soon as possible."

The Neko went to take her seat presently, after a short nod of acceptance at the situation, she had regulation posture, and sat with her knees together and hands over her thighs, looking dutifully up at her senior officer.

"I've seen your training record, and overall everything looks good. I am concerned about one thing. Your profile says you tend to be a loner. Why is that? Do you think you are better than the other soldiers? Because the last thing I need is a maverick pilot who thinks they are the greatest thing to come along."

Ellisif took a while to consider the accusation, her normally faultless serious look cracked into one of slight confusion, even frustration. She broke eye contact and cast a look angrily to the side. "I am not a 'maverick' I follow orders completely. Am I better than other soldiers? Some... The people in my class, I was faster and more consistent than them in simulation I don't see that as something to apologize for. A loner? I don't really understand, I trained as part of a squadron."

She finished her answer and turns to look up at the Chui once more, inexperience but talent awash in the ambitious brown orbs observing Atsui-Chui. "I do not have any problem with following orders, Ma'am."

Atsui's image smiled, "Good. Confidence I can use, in fact it is essential for a pilot. We had a pilot a while back, thought he was the best, that he did not need anyone to help him. He damn near got several members of the squadron killed. I have no desire to go through that again. As for your discipline record, I believe everyone makes a few mistakes. Learn from them, and move on and we'll get along fine. I expect my orders to be followed, and its pretty much a commandment that in the 2XF we have to think creatively. Do you have a problem with that?"

"No Ma'am." She bowed her head in her seat.

"Also, once you get to Aqueous I will assign you as the wingman to one of the other pilots. Can you tell me what I expect of a wingman Santô Hei?"

"Alertness, discipline, skill, and bravery, Ma'am." She offered a curt nod and an expectant look.

"I expect that from all my pilots. When it comes to a wingman, dedication and loyalty. You watch their back and they watch yours. They get cut up, you cover them. You will need to get to know your wingman, both in the fighter and on the ground. Learn how they think, and how to anticipate their next move. Am I clear?"

The Neko paused, her eyes aimed at the Chui but seemingly frozen in time as she considered the order. "Understood, Atsui-Chui."

"Very good. Get your gear and your patch from Sasaki-Juni. She will take you to the transport that is heading this way with some additional supplies, and some other personnel. The next time I see you will be in person. Welcome to the 2X-F21 Santô Hei." Atsui said pointing towards the door.

The Nekovalkyrja stood silently, before bowing deeply to the Chui once more and turning about to head out as ordered.

Thurston, Ricky

Location: Libra Star Fortress

Time: 07:50 hrs

ON

Atsui sat in the office that she had requistioned, a stack of paperwork in front of her was divided into two piles. On her left was the completed stack, the right on was the to do pile. Really, after all we've been through and I I want is some R&R they had me this blasted stack of paperwork. Not to mention three new pilots to interview, all before the Squadron and I can go on Liberty.

She pulled the top folder from the stack of three, "Thurston, Ricky, another Nepleslian.... where do they keep coming from. Well at least this on had the good sense to upgrade to an NH-22C body. So no need to worry about parts falling off." she said to herself. She read the folder, taking note of his family, and his training. He was not the most trained prospect, but there would be time to help him round out his skill set.

She picked up her glass and took a sip of the ice cold water, while it slaked her thirst, it was a disappointment.

Ricky Thurston had been on his last nerve ever since he had recieved his orders. To be honest, the newly recruited Nepleslian . . . er, Yamataian, was nervous about this new posting of his, and had been busy twiddling his thumbs on the shuttle ride in. Once he had arrived, he had been given the directions to report to the CO of the squadron to which he had just been assigned. So he had headed in the direction of her office, post-haste.

Entering now, he could see her at her desk, buried amongst a foreboding pile of papers, and looking rather displeased about her whole situation.

Ricky refrained from grimacing, "Great: first day and my commanding officer is already pissed off."

He cleared his throat and performed a deep bow as he had been taught to do, "Santô Hei Ricky Thurston, reporting for service."

Atsui looked at Ricky with her pale blue almond-shaped eyes. She was pleasantly surprised that the new recruit did not salute. Well that is a pleasant surprise.

She returned his bow with a lesser one as befitting her station. She then straightened and said, "Good day, Thurston-Santô Hei. Please take a seat and we can get this interview started."

"Thank you, ma'am." Ricky replied.

He rose from his bow and almost hesitated in taking a seat. However, he knew that he had gotten permission, and so his hesitation for a few mere seconds. Sitting down with his hands crossed nervously on his lap: the civilian-turned-soldier looked to the officer. His eyes betrayed him, and he quickly realized this: now simply looking at the top of her desk.

"You are a long way from home Santô Hei, so what made you decide to leave Nepleslia and join the Star Army of Yamatai?" she asked in a neutral tone.

Ricky had to pause, taken aback by the nonchalant tone for such a serious question. Twiddling his thumbs again, Ricky had to think for a few moments before speaking.

"Ineptness." Ricky replied suddenly, "Nepleslia isn't getting anything done. They're just floundering around, and from where I'm standing: they seem totally lost. If they can't work this mess out, I want to be one of the people who get things done. I figured that with my flying skills that I wouldn't have much of a problem getting in with the Yamatians."

"I see that's an interesting attitude. Definitely a different tact than most Nepleslians would take. We have two Nepleslians in the squadron. Do you have an issues with Nekovalkyrja? I know not all Nepleslians are comfortable with them. Our squadron has quite a few. I can't afford to have personal prejudicies interfere with the unit cohesiveness." Atsui said her eyes narrowing as she scrutinized Ricky.

Ricky listened intently to Atsui, and nearly visibly wavered under her intense gaze. Calming himself, he prepared to answer.

"No, ma'am. Even if I did have a problem, I fully understand that personal feelings about your squadron mates shouldn't have a bearing on the situation. Besides . . ." He chuckled, trying to lighten the mood with a little humor, ". . . those cat-ears aren't that bad-looking."

Boy that's more right than he realizes, this last mission personal feelings darn near put some people in the hospital. she thought. Atsui then leaned back in the chair while she considered the answers Ricky had given.

"One last question Santô Hei. Do you have problems with unusual missions. Out here on the frontier, those of us in the Second Expeditionary Fleet sometimes have to think outside the box. Or be called on to perform duties that are normally outside our normal job. For example our last mission we were tasked with providing security for a group of Scientists from the Scientific Studies Service. While there we had to undertake a ground mission to rescue prisoners. So do you think you would have problems with that?"

Ricky continued twiddling his thumbs, slightly thrown off by the lack of comment on his (stupid) joke. He had expecte at least a little berating, or something along those lines. Oh well, that just meant he wasn't getting in trouble before the interview was even over. So Ricky decided to try being more casual: leaning forward with his arms resting on his legs.

"Ma'am: I was told that this was an expeditionary fleet. As I understand it, that means we're out on the borders, and when it comes to units like that: you do what you have to in order to get the job done. I don't care what the mission is. If I have lawful orders, then I intend to follow them to the best of my abilities."

Atsui smiled, I like his attitude, we'll see how he fairs with the others, but for now he'll do. she thought.

She opened the folder she was looking at when he came in and signed several pieces of paper. "Thurston-Santô Hei, I believe that you will fit in with the rest of the Fighting Diamonds. So before you leave, I want to give you an opportunity to ask a question. If you wish."

Ricky smiled.

So he was in the unit. He felt happy and relieved that he had made it. So now he leaned back in his chair, looking to the roof of her office, and pondering possible questions silently. He had so many things he could ask. The serious side of him wanted to be very official and prim. He had almost no pressing questions and he could just say so. His less serious side won out, however, and so he looked back to his new CO with a questioin ready.

"Ma'am: requesting permission to head to the bar and celebrate my new job?" He asked with a small smile.

Atsui chuckled, of all the possible questions Ricky asked one that she had never heard. "Very well, Santô Hei, you are dismissed. The squadron is due for some R&R. We are going to be gathering at the Ecstatic Pony on Foxtrot Arm at 1300hrs, and the first round is on me. Feel free to join us."

Ricky chuckled, placing a hand over his mouth to stop himself.

"The Ecstatic Pony?!" The combat pilot nearly wanted to double-over with laughter, but thankfully got control of himself.

"Ma'am, I just want to know: who named that place?"

"The Owner, a Nepleslian Citizen who came out here with the colony, but decided later to move up to the star fortress." Atsui replied

Ricky rose up from his seat once again, performing a low bow almost identical to the one he had done before. Once he rose up, he gave a nod to his CO.

"Thank you, ma'am." He smiled, "I guess I'll be meeting the rest of the squadron at 1300 hours."

He turned on his heel and headed out the door.

Tereane Elisto

Location: Libra Star Fortress

Time: 08:50 hrs

ON

Atsui sat in the office that she had requisitioned, a stack of paperwork in front of her was divided into two piles. On her left was the completed stack, the right on was the to do pile. Fortunately most of the stack was in the completed pile. One interview down, most of this paperwork complete. Get these interviews done, and we should hopefully be released for Liberty.

She pulled the top folder from the stack of three, "Tereane Elisto, another SAINT, well that means he'll be our Intel Officer, I just better make sure he understands my expectations." she said to herself. She read the folder and waited for him to arrive. She had a glass of ice tea that most of the ice had melted in, which she sipped from time to time.

Elisto Tereane casually walked through the corridors of Libra Star Fortress, after having gotten a change of clothing, a hot shower, and food, he was feeling quite refreshed. His uniform was crisp and clean, no wrinkles were present, a fact of which he made certain of thanks to his wife. His eyes, ever cautious and ever analytic, were glancing about the corridor searching for anything out of place.

His eyes fell upon a light fixture that was flickering ever so slightly, almost unnoticeable to the untrained eye but to Elisto's it was more of an agitation. With a slight shake of his head, he continued his walk until he got the office of Atsui. He stood there in front of the door and tugged on the shirt of his uniform to make certain it wasn't wrinkled, then took in a deep breath, exhaled slowly and knocked on the door.

Atsui put down the folder and activated the door control. "You may enter." she said in a clear voice.

Taking in one final breath, Elisto walked into the room and took it in at once, before his eyes fell upon the Chui. "Tereane Elisto-Itto Hei reporting as ordered ma'am!" he said in a crisp tone and with a bow.

Atsui returned his bow with a lesser one, she took a moment to scrutinize his uniform. As expected it was immaculate, but then only a fool would come to an interview in a badly cared for uniform. "Take a seat Tereane-Hei and we may begin."

Elisto gave a slight nod of the head and found a chair to sit in, though he was nervous about the interview, he was doing what he felt was a fine job of hiding it. He didn't say anything, instead waiting to see what questions he would be asked, though knowing full well that there were at least one that he wouldn't be able to answer.

She recognized Elisto from Aqueous, but that was not going to influence her decision. It was still her squadron, and she would be the one to choose who was good enough. She chose to start with her usual first question, which would give her a chance to segue to what she really wanted to know. "So Itto-Hei, why did you choose to join the Star Army?"

His hands collapsed in his lap, he gave the question some thought. "I joined after I had a bad run in with NMX forces, the limitations of my previous occupation meant it was very hard for me to take any sort of stance against them. Not to say I'm aggressive, or vengeful, just that I felt there was more I could contribute."

"Was it that prior career that influenced your decision to choose SAINT, or were you recruited by the black panels?" she asked keeping her face neutral.

"Not at all, in fact, being approached by them was a bit of a shock at the time. Though I had heard of them while on the force, there really wasn't much to be honest until I joined," said Elisto.

"In a Fighter Squadron, being in SAINT has slightly different mission profile. If I select you, your role would be that of Intel Officer. Which means you would be expected to brief the unit on any significant, relevant intelligence for the area. I do not know if you ran into her on Aqueous, but Eika-Ittô Heisho, the Intel Officer for the Heitan was with us when we went into the forest." Atsui paused. "I want one thing crystal clear, I do not like, need, or want any hidden agendas in my unit. Any problem with that?"

"I understand that clearly ma'am," Elisto said though in the back of his mind, he wondered if the Chui would classify his translation of the book as a 'hidden agenda' he wondered if he should ask her, but his orders to not reveal classified information weighed a bit on him.

"What were you flying when you were performing escort duty?" she asked.

"V8 Kawarime A1, ma'am," Elisto responded easily.

"Ah, well, you will be flying something a little different if you are with the Diamonds. You will be in an V8 "Teisatsu", a SAINT influenced fighter. It is a variant of the Kawarime, but has some unique equipment."

Elisto gave a slight nod of the head. The Teisatsu... hmmm... I had a feeling that's what I might be flying, though wasn't entirely certain.

"You will find life out here in the 2XF, on the frontier is a little different than what they taught you at basic. As you saw our members are called to perform whatever task is needed. An infantry team would probably have been better to rescue those civilians, but we were the unit present. Do you think you would have a problem with that kind of environment?"

"No ma'am, even as an officer in charge of a ship back then, I often times had to deal with stuff that... wasn't normal... for my occupation, so I'm more than used to the unexpected," Elisto gave a nervous shrug of the shoulders.

"So where do you see your career going? Do you hope to move from flight status to a full operative? Or rise in through the ranks of the SAINT?"

"Honestly, I'd much rather stay as a fighter pilot, as I've been flying all my life, however, that is not entirely up to me. If SAINT feels my skills serve better as a full operative, then I'll take that route. If it's felt I can serve better as a pilot, or even later, as a captain, then I'll take that route."

"Long term, the decision is really up to you. Just for the record." Atsui glanced at the folder. "Do you have anything you would like to ask me before I make my decision?"

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a moment, pondering a few things. "Well ma'am, I do know from experience that officers tend to want to know a bit about those that serve under them, at least that's how it was on the force. I'm wondering if there is anything you want to know about my background," he asked.

"Well, your portfolio tells me that you are married, wife and a child. That you were in law enforcement you lost a good number of the people under you. So that tells me you have the skills to deal with loss, and to make decisions that can sometimes result in people dying. How does your wife feel about you going from the risk of a police officer, to a soldier?"

"Umm, to be honest, she wasn't entirely thrilled with the idea.. a few pans were thrown when I told her. However, she gradually accepted it since one of us does need to work," Elisto said nervously. "Though, I think the one who took a bit more was my daughter, you'd never think that a three year old would understand these things, but they can amaze you sometimes."

"I can understand that to a degree. I do not have any children of my own. So I can only appreciate what you are saying from a purely intellectual side. Do you plan to have them relocate out here to Daichi or Libra? So that they can be closer to you?"

"My wife does want to move, she's been on Yamatai for so many years that she wants to see more. So she told me that once I have my duty station, she'd move to Daichi, but I think it also has to do with our daughter who's quite the explorer... and enjoys giving her mother gray hairs." Elisto said with the shake of his head. "But yes, the decision to move Daichi was pretty much made even 'before' I completed basic."

"Well, your daughter will not lack for education facilities with the SSS having a campus down there. But that obviously down the road. Tereane-Ittô Hei, I have decided to accept you as a member of the Fighting Diamonds" She said sliding a patch over to him. "We are planning on gathering at 1300hrs at the Ecstatic Pony for drinks. It would be an ideal chance for you to get to know your squadron mates in a relaxed environment. By then we will know what the outcome of the board will be. First round is on me by the way." She said with a grin.

"My thanks ma'am, and I'll certainly enjoy the drink. Though isn't it usually customary for newbies to pay?" he asked curiously, yet with a slight grin of his own and placed his hand on the patch. He looked it over, unable to really believe that he would be flying again, considering his occupation.

"Under other circumstances that is the case, and I'm sure your wing-mates will probably bring that up. But the first round is on me as a small way of celebrating that we made it through, came home and live to fight again."

Elisto gave a nod of approval at that, he only wished that his friends and crew mates from his old ship had survived the battle that claimed their lives. "I can understand that," he said as his expression changed almost instantly to that of depression before quickly going neutral.

"Who knows, perhaps we can lift a glass to your fallen comrades. We'll see how it goes. You are dismissed Ittô Hei. I will see you at the bar." Atsui replied.

Elisto stood up from his chair and bowed respectfully at the Chui. "My thanks ma'am for this honor, and I shall see you then."

Yumeoibito, Errowyn

Location: Libra Star Fortress

Time: 09:50 hrs

ON

Atsui returned to the office that she had requisitioned, she had only one folder in front of her. The personnel jacket for the last interview the name on it was Yumeoibito, Errowyn. Another of the two fighter pilots who she had met on Aqueous. Curious that both of these pilots were on their way to join the squadron at Daichi, and they wind up coming to that planet. Well, get this one done and I can relax before appearing at the board.

She reviewed the contents of the folder, and started formulating her questions.

Errowyn was on pins and needles as she approached the office of her new commander. Other than the testers and aboard the Yamato, even though Yamato was basically being told she was to report daily at 0800 hrs in the combat pilots briefing room and go from there.

She glanced down at her uniform and rang the chimes to announce her arrival and waited, hoping this wasn't the one that was on Aqueous, where she stumbled around like toddler learning to walk.

Atsui pressed the door control to open it and called out. "Yumeoibito-Santô Hei enter."

Taking a deep breath has the door opened, she entered and approached the desk. Coming to the proper spot before the desk and giving the officer behind the desk once over as she gave the proper bow. Not parade ground type of bow as expected. "Yomeoibito-Santo-Hei reporting to Numa-Chui" Holding the bow until the officer acknowledged her.

Atsui watched the Nekovalkyrja enter, taking note of how she walked and her uniform appearance. She was familiar with how nervous the manufactured soldiers could be.

Her uniform looked immaculate as if it just came out of the wrapper, patches are all in the right places. It hugged all the curves in the right places even a bit enhancing to look at, but bare of ribbons. Only her name tag adorned her uniform. She stood waiting to be addressed.

Atsui in her seat gave a slight bow as appropriate for her station. "Santô Hei please take a seat and we can commence with the interview.

Errowyn straightened up when the Chui returned the bow. She took the offered seat, sitting at attention with her hands folded in her lap relaxed. "thank you Ma'am." softly with respect.

"Nice to meet you in person this time, I do not believe we had a chance to actually meet face to face on Aqueous. Of course by the time we returned to the camp, I only had a few things on my mind, getting the civilians tended to, my squadron personnel dealt with, and then locating a good shower." she said starting the interview.

A slight coloring reached her face, looking down at the edge of the desk before her, "I'm the one that bumped into the Itto from Saint. He's my wing commander for the Escort mission to the planet and back to the Yamato." Errowyn spoke softly in an even voice.

"You have an interesting name, not typical for most manufactured soldiers. Did you decide on your name, or was it given to you?" she inquired.

"It was given to me. I was referred to as NH-29E. Till one of the Cadre that was assigned to be my over watcher for the final testings before being released to the Fleet as a combat pilot, Ma'am." Making once again eye contact with Numa-Chui.

"Why were you referred to as NH-29E, there is no such series of Nekovalkyjra?" Atsui inquired.

"According to the Doctors that over saw me, seeing that I survived an exposure to radiation while I was being constructed in the incubation chambers. They wanted to see how I'd turn out. There were four others that was exposed also during development." Errowyn just shrugged breifly, lowering her eyes down briefly. Voice softens. "My sisters were recycled. those that were effected by the radiation. I strove to be the best and gotten lucky where my sisters weren't." Pausing to swallow, then continued, "We were just designated at that time so none would get attached to us. And kept us separate from the others."

Atsui took a moment to consider what Errowyn had just shared. Sounds like someone was playing god, let's see what happens if we radiate them, no one will mind.... she did her best to contain her anger at such thoughts, but a little of it showed in her face. I would love dearly to find out who those bright techs were and see how they feel about a little radiation.... back to the task at hand.

"I am sorry that your sisters did not make it. Such treatment is unconscionable. The Anti-Slavery laws should have protected your sisters and ensured you all got proper treatment."

Errowyn gave a simple head bow to acknowledge the apology as she spoke softly, "thank you, Numa-Chui. It was a blessing for them to be recycled. Mutations are not fun to deal with." Errowyn looked back up at Numa-Chui. "Is there anything else you would like to know about me?" Hoping to change the subject to more military matters at hand.

"Yes, I do have a few questions that I would like to pose to you. The first is your record shows that you tend to have an aggressive nature in the fighter. That can be good and it can be bad. How are you at working with a wingman?"

Eyes sparkled with humor, with a hint of a smile, then it faded, as it was a serious question. "I do my best to follow orders if my wingman is senior and, or placed in charge regardless of rank. Experience is something I lack at the moment even though during my time aboard the Yamato, I flew two missions which were successful in completion. I can work with a wingman with no problems, Numa-Chui."

"That's good, because I have no room in the Diamonds for glory hounds. Our survival depends on knowing what everyone is going to do, and that each person has the others back. Next question, and I will understand if you are uncertain how to answer being as young as you are. Do you have any long term goals or plans for your life... your career?"

Her voice becomes soft and dreamy, a near whisper, as she looks down and fidgets briefly, "To be a Captian Owner of my own freighter," becomes still, looking up at Numa with abit of hope. "My current dreams and hopes is that I survive among those that I serve with, Chui."

Atsui was surprised by Errowyn's answer. "Well, I must say that is rather refreshing. Most NH-29's your age have visions of glory, commanding great warships into battle. I like that you have a desire to one day see the universe from another perspective."

"What would you say is your worst flaw or weakness?"

"Meaiow....I ..." stuttered a bit as she looks thoughtful, never expecting that one as it came shooting out of nowhere. Then remembering her first encounter and how that went. "...Get too focused and get tunnel vision on my targets."

"Target fixation. It is a common problem for fighter pilots. It comes I think in part from the way they train. They focus the students on getting in and getting the shot off. Many of them lock on that mind set, and they never see the other ship that takes them out. That you are aware of the problem, is however the first step to correcting it."

Errowyn nodded in agreement, "I did much better on the sortie in protecting the Transports during their time of poor maneuverability. I'll continue to work on it. Even Scrambler informed me I needed to loosen up a bit."

"Well, I have just the cure that situation. The 21st is joining me at the Ecstatic Pony, a bar run by a Nepleslian on Foxtrot arm. I am buying the first round to show my appreciation for their hard work, and that we are all back together. I will expect you to be there."

Errowyn leaned abit forward, "yes ma'am, What is the attire for this function? Full Dress Uniform?"

"Hell no Santo Hei, this is is purely casual wear. The gathering marks the start of our much earned Liberty." Atsui said with a grin as she slid a couple of 21st patches across the desk to Errowyn.

"Just so we are completely clear, that means I'm accepting you into the squadron."

Errowyn leaned forward, just enough to comfortably take the patches off the desk, softly purrs as she speaks, "Yumeoibiti Santo-Hei is honored to be accepted by Numa-Chui into her squadron. I'll do my best not to soil this momentous occasion." Bowing her head deeply as she leaned back in her seat while caressing the patches with her thumb. Once again resting her hands on her lap.

"You are dismissed Yumeoibito-Hei."

She stood with ease and gave a proper bow and straightened up, turning easily on the balls of her feet and left the office of Numa-Chui, with the patches still in her hand. Pausing as she reached the door and looked over her shoulder at Numa-Chui, "Thank you," and fled the office with all due haste.

Arinori Emiyu

Location: Libra Star Fortress

Time: 10:30 hrs

ON

Atsui returned to the office that she had requisitioned, she had yet another folder in front of her. The personnel jacket for a last minute addition to the Fighting Diamonds. She reviewed the name on it was Arinori Emiyu.

She reviewed the contents of the folder, and started formulating her questions.
---

The loud hiss of compressed air filled the shuttle interior, announcing the docking process was complete. Emiyu stood up, picking up her duffel bag with one hand and slinging over her shoulder. She slipped into shuffling line of passengers as they made their way out of the little shuttle into the wide expanse of the docking bay. The sound of machinery and voices blaring through speakers reached her sharp ears.

Emiyu made her way down the gangway, looking to and fro casually. She was a strange sight that resulted in more then a few double takes and lengthy staring sessions from various other crew members. The NH-29's skin was a pastel robins egg blue, a stark contrast to her pure white hair and grey paneled, crisp uniform.A pair of semi-luminous golden eyes scanned the docking area for some hint as to where she was supposed to go as she reached the bottom of the gangway.

Emiyu's communicator chimed a moment after the shuttle door opened. A text message sent by the Libra Star Fortress AI Arisu.

Attention: Arinori Emiyu - Santô Hei
Your interview is scheduled with Numa Atsui Chui at 10:45 hrs. She can be located on deck 27 of Alpha Arm. Coordinates and directions to the office in attached file.
Arisu

Atsui closed the file and let the information settle, she was used to getting strange selections in her squadron. After all life out on the frontier meant doing the job with what was available. "Well, I will just have to see what this recruit brings to the table." she said to herself.

Emiyu pulled out her comm right after it went off, reading the text that the Taii had sent her just a moment ago. She smirked slightly "No red carpets here, eh ?" she said to herself. She expected a liaison or something to help her find that Chui on this huge ship. Seeing as that was not the case and she had less the five minutes to reach her destination, she had better get a move on. She set off at a light jog, holding out her comm in front of her.

She arrived at the office at 10:44 and took a moment to arrange herself, straightening her outfit and hair "Step one." she said quietly to herself before she knocked on the door frame and stepped in, bowing deeply at the waist " Santo-Hei Arinori Emiyu reporting as ordered." she said, remaining as she was until the Chui returned her bow with her own or offered her a seat, if either.

Atsui dismissed the volumetric display from which she was monitoring Emiyu's progress. She really had no doubt that the Nekovalkyrja could find her way to the meeting. In fact she would have been concerned if she had problems. She made a mental note that Emiyu had bowed as was appropriate, Seems the instructors are doing a better job, too often new transfers come in boisterously announcing themselves and saluting.

Atsui returned Emiyu's bow with a lesser one, "Take a seat Arinori-Santô Hei, and we will begin."

""Yes Ma'am. Thank you Ma'am." said Emiyu gently, laying her duffel bag behind her seat before she sat down, removing her cap from her head. She set it down in her lap, her hands folded atop, eyes forward " I did have some excellent instructors during training. It didn't take them long to get their points across." she said, passively appraising the Chui. She had already decided that this was not going to be a cushy position based on what she had heard from others and the research she had done prior to boarding the shuttle. Still, any experience at this point was invaluable and what better place to gather experience then in a assignment like this one?

"Welcome to the Second Expeditionary Fleet, I am sure you will find life out here is a little different than what your instructors told you. Out here on the frontier we are encouraged to think creatively, outside the box. But the most important thing is to have the back of the soldiers you are with." She paused for a moment, "This is correct that you trained for Starship Operation? And yet they have assigned you to a Fighter Squadron. How do you feel about that Santô Hei?"

Emiyu sat in thought for a few seconds before she replied levelly " Honestly, I was a bit surprised when I found out. But I thought about it while I was coming here and I realized it was a great opportunity to learn something different and expand my working experience." she said " I was trained to manage weapon systems and I love the job. But fighters are weapon systems in and of themselves, so I'm only expanding my knowledge base of weapons systems and how to manage them." she added " If I may ask will I be piloting the actual craft or is there a gunner's nest? Forgive me, I haven't studied Yamataian star fighters yet." she said with a slightly sheepish smile.

"That's a sensible approach. Because you are correct as a fighter pilot, you have to do double duty of flying the craft and selecting and targeting your weapons. We will try to pair you up with a pilot who has some experience to help you through any difficulties. And we can see about arranging for some simulator time during our down time." Atsui looked at the roster, only the more senior pilots had EWO's.

"You will be flying the standard craft for the 21st. A V8 "Kawarime" Fighter, single-seat model 1A, so there is no Weapons Officer station. You will control all aspects of the craft, but being a Nekovalkyjra you should not have any problem since the Kawarime is SPINE enabled."

Emiyu seemed to relax when the Chui mentioned that the craft was SPINE enabled. She had very little experience piloting spacecraft as small as that one and had only had a few tries at the larger spacecraft, both without SPINE assistance " That's a bit of a relief Ma'am." she said, her ears flicking back and forth quickly "How long would do you think it would take for me to become combat ready ma'am ?" she asked.

"To be honest, you will probably see combat fairly soon, and probably before you are what I would call combat ready. The 2XF is under manned, under equipped and always busy. But the Fighting Diamonds are one of the best in the Fleet, and we take care of our own. If we go into combat in the near future, we'll watch your six.

Well, I only have one last question for you. How are your interpersonal skills? We have quite a diverse group, with different backgrounds, and personalities. Do you think that you will have problems fitting in?"

Emiyu's lips twitched in a small smirk before she cleared her throat, pressing her closed hand against her lips " 'Scuse me." she said before replying "I've been told my interpersonal skills could use some work. But I've also been very popular with my classmates at the same time. " she said " Personally, I love working with others. I tried working in isolated areas and it was quite depressing." she said "It shouldn't be difficult, even if it is, I'll make it work Ma'am." she said with a small smile.

"I like that attitude, because believe me we have Nepleslians, Yamataian, and Nekovalkyjra in the Squadron. And you would be surprised at how simple things can go horribly awry.

Well, Arinori-Santô Hei, I think you will make a valuable contribution to the squadron. See our Admin Kayo-Nitô Hei, and she will get you a fighter assignment as well as issue you the standard gear. Congratulations." Atsui said with a smile.

Emiyu stood promptly and bowed at the waist " I'm very grateful to you Ma'am." she said " I look forward to working with you all." she added before she added before retrieving her duffel bag. She went to the door and bowed to Chui once more before she stepped out into the hallway. She released a small sigh of relief, that was not nearly as nerve wracking as she expected it to be. She supposed the stories about battle scarred war veterans was somewhat over the top.

Anne

Location: Libra Star Fortress, in orbit above Daichi.

//ON//
Atsui was back from her shore leave, and some necessary shopping for some personal items. The temporary office she used was utilitarian, but had a few touches to make it less impersonal.

She was reviewing the service record for the newest member of the squadron. The fact that there was only a partial name made her suspect the record was incomplete. However, a quick call to Kayo the squadron's admin confirmed that the data and name on the jacket was correct.

As Atsui read the background for the soldiers, it became apparent. A Helashio, former slave. But she had the prerequisite skills. This should make for an interesting interview. And I'll have keep an eye on her for a while.

Anne just made her way to the office where her mas- commanding officer was waiting. It was time to make an appeal on her and show her Anne's good abilities. In her mind Anne was reminding herself of her being free person and that she should act confidently. With that she walked to the door and used ring on its panel.

Atsui looked up when she heard the chime from the door that signaled the arrival of the new pilot. She closed the service jacket and then sent a mental command to Arisu. "Please let the recruit know that I am ready to receive her."

From the speaker above the control, the Star Fortress's AI chimed, "Anne-Santo Hei, Numa-Taii is ready to receive you. Please enter."

Anne took a deep breath and stood straight. She exhaled, feeling ready to face her new mistress. When she entered the room she bowed deep saying, "Anne-Santo Hei at your orders Madam."

Atsui paused a moment at the awkward wording, before returning the bow with a lesser one of her own. If this was a sign of things to come, this new recruit was going to be a source of irritation for her.
"Santo Hei, we do not use the word Madam. It is Numa-Taii, Taii, Ma'am, or Solitaire. Is that clear?"

Anne straightened herself up and looked a little shaken by the start of this interview. She was a little afraid this could ruin it for her, but she would certainly not give up now. Until Numa-Taii says that it is over, it just is not over. "Yes ma'am. I understand, it won't happen again." Anne replied with her voice full of belief in herself now. If you want to be finally free you need to use your head more Anne. She thought as she waited for things to come.

"So, after getting your freedom. I am curious why you chose to put yourself in service to the Empire. Can you explain why?" Atsui inquired.

Anne put finger on her chin deep in thought. "Well Ma'am," she started and paused for a while. "I lived as slave most my life. It was normal for me to serve my mistress. By my judgment and from what I have learned slave rehabilitation centre it is not easy to act completely individual right away. It made me think about what should I do next. Military service seemed like the perfect thing. I mean every soldier is free but he also has to listen to his superiors. It is nowhere near the relationship a master and slave has but I think it is good place for me to start. Also it is the Empire that made it possible for Helashio's like me to be free. I felt that I can pay a little of this debt this way." She replied hoping it will make her new mistress happy. Or that is at least the answer she was looking for.

Atsui took a moment to consider Anne's words. "I can see how the prospect of being out in civilian life with no sense of order or purpose would be difficult given your background. Why did you choose the Fighter Pilot career? In some ways its a fairly independent job field."

Anne looked back in Atsui's eyes. "Oh it was because although I have vast medical knowledge I don't have the proper diplomas to practice in Empire. At least I could gain medical training in army. I didn't want to be nurse so my only problem was with me being medic with infantry unit. I mean I am not very physical person. I would do everything for my comrades but I am not sure I would hold up face to face with enemy combat. I am no warrior after all. But in fighter I can be Flight Surgeon and I can fight too. Combining my medical skills and ability to help after combat. I think it was the right choice for me. But don't take me for a coward, please. If anything happens I know how to use my pistol, I would just rather choose to not get into that situation." She said. She was strangely calm. She never been this calm with other superior being. Well she could talk openly to her mistress but that was different. She'd known her mistress her whole life, she only met this person few minutes ago. And they were going to be her new mistress. In a way.

"I do not think that you are a coward, its just for a person who is looking for structure, infantry would have been a more appropriate role. My pilots are expected to think for themselves. Especially in the thick of battle. It will be you and a person on your wing, each depending on the other for your very survival. Can you accept that responsibility?"
Atsui looked at the paperwork and asked, "Is there a reason you have no surname? While its not uncommon for some older Neko's who started as Sprites to have only one name. It is not typical for most citizens. I would like to hear your thoughts."

Anne looked Atsui straight in the eyes. "Ma'am," she started. "I am sure I will do the best of my abilities to look after my squadron and my wing-mate. It is my job as flight surgeon and I would not be here if I would not believe that I can do it. Also I was not regular slave, I had certain... freedoms. For example my mistress liked when I thought for myself sometimes and be a little more open."

When Atsui asked her second question it left Anne a little confuse. "I never needed a surname. None of the slaves in household of my mistress had one. And since my name is exotic in Yamatai i though that is no worry about confusion of persons. Do you think I need one ma'am?" She asked back.

"Anne is not that strange of a name, we do have a number of Neplelians in Yamatai and they use Nepleslian names. There is no legal requirement to have a Surname. If there was every Nekovalkyrja would be required to have one. But the lack of one does create a potential for social awkwardness. In Yamataian culture it is considered rude to refer to another person by their given name unless you are very close to them. You may find some people unsure how to properly refer to you, or try treating you the way the do sometimes with Nekos. It is purely your decision. If at sometime in the future you decide you want a Surname, it is a simple enough matter to address. I just hope that when you do you choose something that says something about who you are as a person."

"I am relieved to hear that you are used to thinking for yourself. The middle of dogfight is not the time to have to try to talk someone through combat."

Atsui paused for a moment as she thought about how she would deal with the next potential issue.

"Now I need to make one thing very clear to you, especially given your background. The moment you enlisted, you became a Citizen of the Empire. That means you have the same rights and freedoms as anyone here in Yamatai. While on duty, you obviously need to obey the chain of command, and proper behavior dealing with persons according to their rank.

However, your person, your body are yours. No one has the right to order you to do anything of an intimate nature, or anything that does not constitute a proper request of a soldier. This includes officers and enlisted alike. You have the right to say no, and I will personally nail someones hide to the nearest wall if I find out they tried otherwise. Do you understand?"

Anne decided to think about her surname and need for one later. Other thing that just Atsui-taii talked of was much more important. "I understand you ma'am." Anne replied and took a deep breath. "Actually I experienced first hand that it is not to hard to take advantage of me. My unconsciousness is still in... you might call it 'slave-mode' but my consciousness is not and I am sure I can work it out. I just need a little more time. Plus I now know what to be careful of. I will be glad to help my comrades but I will make sure to not... serve them. That is what you meant didn't you? And of course you don't have to be afraid of insubordination from me." She said and took a deep breath. "Unless orders would very very unreasonable and put my comrades-in-arm in extremely needless danger." She whispered then and looked at floor. It was extreme risk but she saw it as a rebellion of kind. A step to be more free. But she just couldn't let anyone of her squadron be hurt or killed if could be done differently.

Atsui's face grew grim, "What happen? Where? Who? I will have the individual or individuals hide nailed to the nearest wall." The words flew out before she could stop them. "Are you okay?"

Anne was relieved that Atsui did not react to her talk about insubordination, but this was maybe even worse. She did not think it would be wise to rat out on her classmates from flight school. Especially when it not only their fault but hers too. "I am sorry ma'am but I would rather not talk about. It was my mistaken that I let them and I was not being used sexually if that is on your mind. It all just slipped my mind and I did not realized I was being used. I will be more careful next time." She said in the end, still looking at the floor.

Atsui counted to ten in her mind, and then counted again. After restoring her calm. "Okay, I will respect your decision since it happened under someone else's watch. But if anyone attempts it while you are in the Fighting Diamonds, I will not let it go. I hold my people to a code of acceptable behavior and taking advantage of a fellow squadron mate is not part of that code. I am also glad to hear that you have learned from that experience. As for insubordination... I never considered that to be an issue. I think you will fit in with the rest of the Diamonds. Now, I am going to give you the opportunity to ask me a question."

"Thank you ma'am, I will do my best and won't let others take advantage of me." Anne reply and then went deep in thought. She can ask her new mistress a question. But what could she possibly want to know? "Ma'am? You might know this. I was thinking and why is not Flight Surgeon an EWO position? Also should I expect any problems as Helashio?" She asked in the end.

Atsui considered Anne's questions, "The position of Flight Surgeon can be either, but right now here in the 2XF we are still short of skilled personnel. So it is more important to have another pilot than an EWO. This is the fullest the 21st has been with pilots since I first took command of it. That is an important factor in survival. The more pilots we have the better we can watch over each other. As for you being a Helashio, I can't really say. I have not had any experience with others of your kind. The 21st and the 2XF is a kind of melting pot of late. We take in anyone who wants to fight, and we give them the tools and training. As long as they fight well and obey orders, their origin or species. Really doesn't matter.

I hope that answers your questions. If so then you may consider this interview concluded, and I am accepting you as a member of the Fighting Diamonds." She placed a pair of squadron patches on the table and extended her hand, "Welcome to the 21st Anne-Santo Hei."

"Thank you ma'am, I will do my best to not disappoint you." Anne replied, stood up and shook Atsui's hand. She then bowed and took the patches.

Murasaki Kenshin

Location: Libra Star Fortress
Time: 1600hrs
//ON//
Atsui sat in the office she requisitioned to conduct another interview. She looked at the service jacket before her, Murasaki Kenshin... "Another trainee.... Better a trainee than nothing, and with our record, he won't stay a trainee for long. If he survives." she said to herself. She relaxed, and sipped a glass of water while waiting for Kenshin to arrive.

Murasaki Kenshin meanwhile had just cleared the airlock of the Kuma T8 shuttlecraft that had conveyed himself and a half dozen other fresh 'nuggets' from the flight school at Fort Hanako. The young pilot had spent more than an hour in the narrow confines of that shuttle -- mostly keeping to himself -- but occasionally he broke his habitual quiet to trade stories and rumors with the other pilots about the different fighter squadrons to which they had been assigned -- or as in his own case, were being interviewed for. The docking bay within which Kenshin stood was voluminous and packed with additional shuttles, lines of personnel awaiting the all-clear to board their respective transports, and stacks of cargo crates intended for transfer to locations of need. The Kuma and its crew were making preparations for the return trip to Hanako's World, and all around him were Nekovalkyrja, Yamataians and even the occasional Nepleslian and Elysian dressed in the orange-panelled uniforms of Star Army logistical specialists or the red trimmed EPJ's of technicians, performing their own day-to-day duties or loading ships with inventory. Kenshin smiled at the sight -- It felt good for him to be back aboard a busy station with the hustle and bustle of people moving about through their necessary daily routines. -- being on a planet was fine too, but if he was given a choice he would prefer to forego the wild temperature fluctuations and the unexpected rainfall. Hanako's world had a large surface hydrographic percentage which in turn translated to frequent and severe stormy weather. Kenshin was really starting to loathe rain. Thought's of bad weather dissipated though, as the busy surroundings reminded him of the being back home on White Harbor station, the Murasaki clan's primary residence.

Though he was a few months beyond celebrating his eighteenth birthday, Kenshin could be mistaken for someone either a little younger or a little older. The young pilot's facial features -- like those of most Yamataians -- had a distinctly Japanese cast to them. His build was somewhat muscular -- but not unduly so -- and his complexion was a bit pale. Kenshin's irises were a light chestnut color -- deep brown pools that soaked in his surroundings and seemingly tried to catalogue every detail they caught hold of. Luckily for him, he was also a fairly handsome youth -- though not to a spectacular degree. With a little more luck, he would improve with a few years to mature. Murasaki Kenshin's hair color was also a deep, dark violet that bordered on midnight black depending on how the illumination panels interspersed throughout the docking bay caught it. His hair was cut short and well groomed, with a pony-tail that reached down to his upper back, tied half-way with a small piece of intricately woven purple and gold cord. For his impending interview, the young man was dressed in an impeccably cleaned Type 30 duty uniform rather than the working uniform he more habitually wore as a mere enlisted soldier. His Star Army-issued duffel bag was also in hand, containing within its interior pretty much everything he owned.

A brown haired Neko stood watching the people coming out of the shuttle. She watched each person and looked at the datapad in her hand. She was looking for a new member of the squadron. However, once she saw him she watched him turn and query the station computers. "Well, I guess he doesn't need my help, I'll look for Tamahagane-Santô Hei."

First things first... I need to make my way to Numa Atsui-Taii, Kenshin thought to himself as he proceeded out of the docking bay and inwards toward the upper-level concourse of Libra fortresses Alpha Arm -- the section utilized by the 2XF's Operations division, of which the carrier YSS Heitan and the 21st "Fighting Diamonds" squadron were a part. Once Kenshin found himself by one on the Zodiac rail stations near the concourse, he queried the stations computer for Numa-Taii's location at a nearby holographic terminal.

According to the directions the computer provided, Numa Atsui was waiting in a requisitioned office fairly close by. Kenshin memorized the layout of the concourse, taking note of shops and other landmarks locations so that he would more easily be able to orient himself and find his way.

* * * * *

A brief interval later the young Santô Hei arrived at his destination. Willfully ignoring the butterflies in his stomach, Kenshin reached out for the touch screen next to the closed office doorway. With a single touch upon the electronic computer panel, the stations computer responded by issuing a musical chime that signaled to the officer within that the rookie had arrived for his interview.

Atsui looked away from the volumetric display she had been monitoring. She had been watching Kenshin's actions since his arrival on the station. She wanted to see how he went about the task of getting to the interview. She picked the folder, closed it and informed the Libra AI Arisu to allow the Santô Hei to enter.

The door to the room opened as Arisu's voice came from the speaker, "Murasaki-Santô Hei, Numa-Taii is ready to receive you. You may enter now."

Kenshin's gaze trailed the door as it slid aside with a soft mechanical sound. Once it had fully disappeared he stepped through the breach and found himself within a spartan, air-conditioned chamber. With little else in the room his attention and focus immediately settled upon the individual seated at the desk, a file folder clutched loosely in her hands. Taking a few more steps forward the young pilot came to a stop a just in front of the writing table where he rested the duffel bag he carried upon the carpeted floor. Schooling his features to a measure of calm, Kenshin bowed both in greeting as well as a gesture of respect towards his superior officer -- he paused a few heartbeats -- then he once more raised his torso back to its original position.

"Murasaki-Kenshin, Santô Hei. Reporting as ordered, ma'am." he announced in a clear, cultured voice that carried its content with musical tones and clear pronunciation. Whilst he awaited Numa-Taii's response, Kenshin's hazel eyes drank in the details of the squadron commander's appearance and bearing. At a glance she was either a Yamataian or else had an NH-29H body, though the former was far more probable due to the NH-29H's scarcity. Her facial features were narrow with prominent cheekbones, a slender nose and a strong jawline. Her hair was straight, shortly cut and a deep auburn color. The feature that most drew Kenshin's attention though were her eyes -- a piercing pale ice blue that he found somewhat disconcerting. Though she couldn't be more than ten years older than himself and was therefore still quite young, through those experienced and knowing eyes Kenshin managed to catch a glimpse of her personality and the harsh experiences that had shaped it. He was suddenly struck by the feeling that he definitely wanted to stay on her good side -- assuming she had one.

Atsui watched as Kenshin entered a room, she was a firm believer in first impressions. He looked younger than his jacket reported his age. He has one of those boyish faces, but his demeanor and mannerisms speak well. She took note of his pony tail and had to wonder how he managed to don the AFS helmet with such long plumage.

Atsui returned his bow with a lesser on of her own commensurate with her rank. "Kindly take a seat Santô Hei and we can commence with the interview. I take it you did not encounter our Administrator Kayo-Nitô Hei, she was supposed to meet you at the hangar."

She flipped open the service jacket and waited for him to be seated.
Kenshin maneuvered himself into one of the cushioned chairs situated near the Taii's desk and then replied to the officers statement. "No ma'am. We must have missed each other. Fortunately it wasn't too difficult to find my way here -- the station's A.I. was quite helpful in that regard." The young man found himself unable to find much comfort in the seat whilst under the scrutinizing gaze of Numa-Taii -- it was taking much effort on his part maintain calm composure. Relax Kenshin... you just have to show that you're what she's looking for in a fighter pilot. If they didn't think you had the potential at least, you'd never have been ordered to attend the interview in the first place, he thought to himself, trying to get his nerves fully under control.
Resourceful, that's good. A point for him. She thought. "Well, let's get this started.... Why did you choose to join the Star Army? Especially given your familial opportunities."

Kenshin nodded, both to himself and to indicate to the Taii that he had heard the query -- this was one question he had thought might come up given his background. He took a few moments to formulate a reply, before answering. "Two reasons-- the first being that the current state of war threatens my own family and its fortunes -- which are now also under threat from the Mishhuvurthyar. The longer this conflict drags on, the more civilian collateral damage there will be and its quite possible my family will become casualties. I want to do everything in my power to prevent that."

The boy exhaled, paused for a few more moments, and then continued. "The second reason is that I've always been interested in piloting starships -- from fighters up to capital ships. I also one day hope to become captain of my own ship, though whether or not I will pursue that goal within the Star Army or as a civilian is still something I've yet to fully decide upon."

Atsui listened and evaluated Kenshin's responses. They were both expected and yet better than she had hoped for.

"So what do you think is the first responsibility of a fighter pilot?"

"The first responsibility of a fighter pilot..." Kenshin responded as he mused in thought. "Personally Numa-Taii, I don't see fighter pilot's as having any one responsibility that completely overshadows all others. Fighter pilot's have many important duties which can vary greatly depending upon circumstances. We're soldiers -- we deal in life and death whenever we fly out -- and failing to fulfill any of our duties has the potential to end a mission in disaster. That said, I would personally would consider two responsibilities of the foremost importance; obeying orders and pursuing ones mission objectives to the best of ones ability... and secondly but no less important in my own mind; watching out for ones squadron and wingmen. Most, if not all mission's will require trust and concerted teamwork-- without being able to trust our team-mates to guard each others backs and work in unison to perform our tasks, our operations will eventually go sour and end in a bloody massacre."

"Exactly which is why the first responsibility of a fighter pilot is to his or her wingman, to be there watching their back, and knowing that their wingman has their back. A mission changes second by second, and you never know what to expect, so we depend on our wingman so that we have at least one constant in an ever changing situation. Rule number one in my book, stay with your wingman. There is no room in our world for hotshots, or daredevils, those only result in unnecessary deaths, and lots of paperwork." Atsui replied.

She then looked back down at the jacket. "I have heard what I need to Murasaki-Hei." She picked up a pen and signed one of the forms in the jacket and closed it. "Effective immediately, you are officially a member of the Fighting Diamonds. Find Kayo-Hei, and she will see to outfitting you with your squadron gear."

Kenshin stood and issued Atsui another respectful bow. "I am honored and grateful, ma'am..." the young man said, "I look forward to working with you and meeting the rest of the squadron. I'll try my best not to dissapoint you." The boy retrieved his duffel bag from the floor besides his seat, then walked towards the entrance to the office. He returned his gaze back towards the Taii for one final, less formal bow as a gesture of farewell.

"Sayonara, Numa-Taii. " Kenshin stepped outside and exhaled a sharp sigh of relief. He took a few moments to steady himself, before he made plans to locate Kayo and get himself settled in.

Seion Ayumu

Location: Chiharu Starfortress
System: Veronica

Atsui looked out the window in the office she had selected for the latest interview. Beyond the window lay the Heitan in the repair bay. Ketsurui technicians were removing sections of the carrier's hull to get to the damaged systems underneath. To Atsui it seemed like just another violation of the ship she called home. The ship that had she not given in to her temper would have been hers. The Heitan would be repaired and live to fight another day, and Atsui swore that one day it would be with her as commander.

She turned back to the desk, and pulled up the data jacket for the latest applicant for the 21st. Seion Ayumu- Santô Hei a new pilot fresh out training. "Another greenie, won't stay green for long." she said to herself. "Kontan, what is the status of Seion-Hei?"

"Her shuttle is arriving in five minutes. I will notify her of your location upon her arrival." the AI replied.

Seion stared out of the small viewport to the right of her in the shuttle's wall, her jade eyes taking in the sleek lines and massive structures of the Chihaur Starfortress as her transport craft made a slow loop around to its docking bay. Her hair was pulled up into a neat bun, the thick raven locks hidden beneath her service dress cap while the heavy frock coat concealed her impeccable dress uniform, the smooth cloth hugging the shapely contours of her fit body.

She took a deep breath and gathered her things as the hiss of depressurization of the cabin around the small craft let her know that she had arrived at her new station in life, her new home for three years or until she...she shook her head, the full mass of her silky locks threatening to spill free from beneath the small hat, not allowing the thought of anything but victory to guide her onto the Starfortress.

The doors to the shuttle opened with a pneumatic hiss and the medium height, shapely figure stepped out for the first time into her new home for the next three years. It was an anticlimactic moment, so grand and amazing in her dreams as she received her orders and was welcomed in with open arms by her flight mates, where instead she was met by a robotic eye staring at her from the wall, her name flashing on a display panel. Seion stepped forward and pressed the button, her three fingers moving deftly over the keyboard to unlock her instructions.

Her emerald eyes swept over the display, taking in all of the information presented in at incredibly rapid rate, her taunt legs leaning forward slightly with delight and nervous anticipation. She keyed in directions to Atsui's office and set off about her way, her duffel bag slung confidently over her shoulder, a spring in her step. The strap of the bag was pulled tight against her stomach, riding straight down the middle of her full, shapely cheast, drawing the attention of passers-by as she went on her with way to report in.

Along the way, Seion was met by a brown haired Neko. "Hello Ayumu-Santô Hei, I have been looking for you. I am Heitan Kayo-Nitô Hei. I am with the Fighting Diamonds. I am the Squadron's admin."

Seion snapped a crisps salute and stood at attention.

"Santo Hei Seion Ayumu requesting permission to board ship and directions to Fighting Diamonds adminstration office.

Kayo smiled briefly, I think I was worse that her when I started. she thought. "There is no need to salute me Ayumu-Santô Hei, I am only slightly higher in rank than you. Actually we will not be going to our Admin area. They were destroyed in the battle as part of the damage the Heitan took. But I will take you to Numa-Taii right away. Kindly follow me." she said as she started walking. "I am still trying to get used to the concept of saluting. It feels rather Nepleslian to me. I still prefer to bow when dealing with the Taii. It will not take us long to get to the room that she is using."

Seion nodded and returned Kayo's smile, thankful to find a friendly face and someone willing to guide her to her destination. She did not want to be late in reporting in for her first assignment and with all of the hustle and bustle of ship repairs and refitting going on Seion felt she would never have been able to find her way without some guidance.
"Thank you for your assistance, I look forward to serving with you in the 21st, you and your fellow pilots have quite a reputation and I hope to live up to the Numa-Taii's expectations."

Seion followed behind Kayo at a respectful distance, nodding politely at the technicians and various other personnel they passed in the wide hall, her fingers moving absently to smooth the wrinkles creased into her uniform from her shuttle flight, traveling over the shapely figure and leaving the uniform in a better state of presentation. She took a deep breath as they approached Numa-Taii's temporary offices, preparing herself to report in.

"I will let Numa-Taii know you are here." Kayo said, she pressed the door control and stepped into the room.

Atsui looked up from the reports she was reviewing. "Casualty reports... normally not this bad, but several of the ships were destroyed and the soul savior pod was obliterated with them." she said to Kayo.

"That is terrible, but they all knew the risk ma'am. Your interviewee is ready when you are Numa-Taii." Kayo replied.

Atsui tapped the screen and turned off the display, she touched it again and brought up the service jacket for Seion. "Please send her in."
Kayo gave a slight bow to acknowledge the request, turned and walked out. Once in the hallway. "Numa-Taii is ready to see you. You can leave your bags with me."

Seion slung her bag from her shoulder and passed it to Kayo, bowing with appreciation to her guide. She smoothed her dress uniform and straightened her back before stepping smartly into the office of Numa-Taii, saluting smartly and awaiting permission from her superior officer to speak.

Atsui watched the new soldier enter into the room, she took note of the fact that Seion had ensured that her uniform was properly position. She waited a moment, for her to officially report when it became apparent that she was not going to, Atsui then returned the salute. Saluting feels too much Nepleslian for my liking, but regulations say its allowed. she thought to herself.

She took a moment to review Seion's service jacket, there was not much in it, but then there would not be, after all the soldier was barely four months old. After digesting the the contents of the file, she picked up her cup of coffeee and took a sip, she then looked back at Seion. "When reporting to an officer it is customary to do so. Take a seat Santo-Hei and the interview will commence."

Seion blushed a deep crimson and released her salute, taking a seat as ordered.

"Santo Hei Seion Ayumu reporting for duty, ma'am. Please forgive my mistake. It will not happen again."

Seion mentally cursed her stupidity, all of her previous military training the only thing keeping her sitting up straight in the seat and not fleeing back down the hall in tears. Already she had made a mistake in front of her commanding officer, not a very good way for a new pilot to start her service.

Halcyon Hael

ON
YSS Heitan

Atsui was sitting in her office that was part of her suite. It did not yet feel like hers. She pondered what she could do to personalize it some. She decided that she would see about getting a model of a Kawarime to place on her desk. That would be enough of a start.

She looked at her agenda and saw that she had a number of interviews with new crew members for the Heitan. One of them was a pilot and that was at the head of the list. She reviewed the service record,
A Minkan, well that means physically he's compatible with all the equipment. That will be a pleasant change, and enough life experience to deal with things. she thought.

She quickly scanned the rest of the record, impulsive... hmmm

A T7 Racoon shuttle approached the carrier with personnel transfers. It manuevered and landed in the Gamma bay at the bottom of the ship.
Hael took a deep breath to steady the nerves that gurgled in the pit of his stomach. After long last he had made it through his pilot training. He had left home and he was ready to make a name for himself. And it all started here, aboard the YSS Heitan. All he had to do was not make a fool of himself in front of the Commander and he would consider his first day a success.

The shuttle made its final descent and Hael stood and fumbled with the duffle bad that held the only belongings he had deemed important enough to bring with him. Hael debarked the craft and made his way to make his report to Taii Numa.

When he finally reached the door to her office, he pushed the chime that would announce his presence.

A female voice from above Hael, spoke, it was Hiromi the ship's MEGAMI. "Kindly place your baggage along side the door. The Taii will be with you shortly."

Hael started slightly as the unexpected voice spoke from above him. After recovering, he did as he was bid and placed the duffel bag along the wall so as to keep it out of the way of anyone walking along the hall.

"Ma'am Halcyon-Santo Hei is outside the door, are you ready to receive him."

"Thank you Hiromi, kindly let him him. I want to get this taken care of." she said.

"You may enter when ready Santo-Hei," Hiromi said opening the door.
Hael nodded as if the speaker above him could see his acknowledgement. He took a moment longer to ensure his uniform was straight and neat before entering the room.

Stepping into the Taii's office, Hael snapped crisply to attention before bowing deeply. As he bowed he said formally, "Santo-Hei Halcyon reporting as order Numa-Taii!" Then he straightened again and stood at attention until acknowledged.

Atsui watched Hael with her pale blue eyes. Attention to detail was important for a pilot, and she noted that he had taken time to ensure his uniform was situated properly. Also the fact that he bowed earned him a small mental check. She returned his with a much shallower bow as befitting her rank.

"Kindly take a seat Santo-Hei and we will get started. I have a few questions that I want answers to before accepting you as part of my crew." she said keeping her face neutral.

"Yes, Numa-Taii," Hael answered before slipping into a seat in front of her desk. He could feel that flutter in his stomach again, but he took a hard swallow and pushed past it. Trying not to sit to rigidly, he waited for the commander to begin her interview.

Atsui watched Hael, how a person took the seat could sometimes give insight. She could read his body language and so far nothing was out of normal for a new recruit.

"I see you are a second generation soldier. What prompted your decision to enlist. Your family hasn't shed enough blood for the Empire?" she asked intentionally choosing her words.

Hael's voice almost caught in his throat as the commander turned immediately to questions about his family. "Serving the Empire is the greatest honor that can be bestowed on a man, Numa-Taii. My father served honorably," he should STILL be serving, he thought a bit angrily. "When my time came, I found myself eager to serve the glory of the Empire."

"Glory of the Empire.... hmmm. so your father was Infantry, served well. So was your decision to become a fighter pilot, a form or rebellion or a desire to make a name for yourself?" she asked.

Both he thought instinctively though he didn't say it out loud. He tried to divert the question without lying to the commander, but he fidgeted in his seat uncomfortably. "I'm just a different person than my father, Numa-Taii, and I plan on serving the Star Army for many, many years. I will serve longer than my father and with greater honor."

Atsui sensed that her question had made a palpable hit on the recruit. There was obviously some sort of family history, but as long as Hael served well, she was not going to question him about his family situation.

"While you are coming to us intending to be a pilot, we often find ourselves having to do other roles. The squadron I am considering posting you has also had to deal with combat on the ground, and a search and rescue. Do you see having a multi-role position being a problem?" Atsui asked only because she felt there was some issue with Infantry, and wanted to make sure this person knew that he might have to do some stuff typically considered Infantry.

"I am well trained in the arts of hand to hand combat Numa-Taii. My father spent years training me and I grew up practicing all the lessons he instilled. If the need arises you will have my vow that I will use all these skills to ensure the success of the mission," Hael assured his commander without concern. He had worked long and hard growing up. Originally he had thought he would also be infantry, but when his father refused his upgrade he decided to carve his own path.

"That is good to hear, after all, every soldier receives the same initial training. So we should always keep those skills sharp. The Taisho likes to keep our forces trim especially given the food shortage last year, and because we are dependent upon the colonies out here for our support.
What would you say is your most valuable facet that you will bring to the Diamonds?"

"Eagerness, Numa-Taii," he said with almost a foolish grin before he remembered his place. He wiped the smile away from his lips before he continued. "That is to say, Numa-Taii, I am eager to prove myself and eager to fulfill orders to my best ability and, hopefully, above and beyond what is expected of me. If the Taisho asks me to do 100 push ups, I will do 200. If you ask me to scrub the facilities, I will scrub every toilet on this ship with a toothbrush..."

Hael clamped his mouth shut before he got himself in trouble or volunteered for actually cleaning all the toilets.

Atsui listened. She was unsure of how to take Hael's response.

"Eagerness... do not take this wrong but most new recruits are eager. Eagerness can lead to rashness, and that can get people killed. I was looking for something more definitive. Being personable, creative, able to come up with unorthodox ideas. Are some examples of what I was looking to hear.

But I am not going to fault you for eagerness, but to use your example. If you are given an order to do 100 pushups and you do 200, technically you are not following orders, and you could alienate yourself from your team mates.

Next question, is a theoretical situation.

While on a mission you notice one or more of your squadron mates violate regulations in a manner that could endanger the squadron, or could if made known reflect badly on the Star Army. What would you do?"

Hael's eyes dipped a bit, frustrated by the feeling he had just gotten an answer wrong on an important test. He listened carefully to her next question and tried to put himself in the situation she described. He closed his eyes and imagined it.

"I... I would report it to my direct supervisor, Numa-Taii. Nothing constitutes putting the entire squadron in danger or jeopardizing the honor of the Star Army."

"So I want to be sure, you are saying that you would not take any action to stop them from the offense but would report it to your commander, in this case, Munkata-Shoi."

Hael bit his lip. It was a complicated question and he concentrated hard to find the answer. "I... I would notify my supervisor first, Numa-Taii. If that supervisor was not on hand to deal with the issue, I would feel obligated to take immediate action acting in their stead as proxy."

"That is a better answer. While you would still be obligated to report the incident strictly speaking by the book. Not taking action at the time could be construed as supporting their action. And possibly if the situation was seen by a person outside of your unit make you an accomplice.

Okay, final question. Would you describe yourself as a socially well rounded person?"

Hael relaxed, feeling he made a better impression on the second question than he did on the first.

"I think I handle myself well in social situations, Numa-Taii. Having trained with my father, I know the importance of keeping my cool. A temper that flares too brightly is likely to lead one to mistakes. In a fight that could mean death, in social situations it could mean court martial."

"Glad to hear that." She pulled up a volumetric display and made a quick notation.

"Effective immediately, you are assigned to the Fighting Diamonds, your tail number will be V8X2 32-0172. You will earn a code name in time. The Diamonds are a bit under strength so they will be glad for another pilot. We are currently involved in an operation. It is too late for your to participate in the first sortie of the Diamonds, but when they return, you are to present yourself to Munkata-Shoi. So go to your cabin, stow your gear, get into your flight suit and get down to the flight deck.Hibiyashi-Heisho is the Diamonds crew chief she will show you where your fighter is and get it ready for the next sortie.

Any questions?"

"No Numa-Tai, I understand!" Hael rose to attention and bowed deeply again, holding the bow until he was formally dismissed.

Atsui returned the bow, "Good luck then Santo-Hei, and pay attention to what Munkata-Shoi says, she is a good officer and she'll do her best to keep you alive. Dismissed."

Hael promptly spun and retreated from the office to follow his orders.

ON
Atsui was sitting at the desk in her office. It had taken her a while to actually feel comfortable with an office. She had over the months added a few personal touches. The first was a scaled model of the Heitan that sat on top of a small cabinet to the left. On her desk she had a model of her V8 Kawarime.

Her admin a NH-33M named Ayaka informed her that she had some inbound recruits. So she pulled up the service jackets from the ships MEGAMI.

Alec Wyrick stared out of the port side window on the bridge of the YSS Yukigumo, the Courier 2B class Freighter that was giving him a ride to his new duty station, the YSS Heitan. He couldn't keep the small smile from his face as he watched the stars pass by. This wasn't his first time in space of course, but this was his first time in uncharted space. Here he was, at the edge of the frontier, going beyond where any known ships in the Empire had ever gone before.

One of the pilots for the Yukigumo, a blond Yamataian male Ittô Heisho who appeared to be in his mid to late twenties turned around and noticed Alec staring out the window. He smiled himself a little, as if wondering if he had ever been so young, Speaking up he asked the young pilot. "Hey kid, this your first time out this way?"

Alec turned around nodding with a lopsided grin, his face looking a little sheepish as he spoke. "Yeah does it show?"

The Ittô Heisho let out a small chuckle as he nodded. "Yeah just a little." He seemed to nod at the blue paneling on Alec's uniform as he continued. "So you're a pilot huh? You just get out of the academy?"

Alec fully turned around to meet the man. Standing up straight he walked over and extended his hand. "Yeah just finished. The name is Alec Wyri..." Alec involuntarily flinched as he realized the military fopaux he was about to make. Dropping his hand to his side, he gave the Ittô Heisho a polite bow as he introduced himself. "I am Wyrick Alec-Santô Hei, nice to meet you Ittô Heisho."

The Ittô Heisho waved his hand in a dismissive manner as he replied. "Hey no need to worry about regulations here Wyrick. We don't have any brass to impress on this vessel. I'm Mizushima Benny-Ittô Heisho , but you can just call me Mizushima." The Ittô Heisho put his hands in his pockets and he leaned against the wall as he continued. "Still though, you might not want to do that when introducing yourself to your new CO."

Alec nodded as he relaxed a little, he knew the guy was right. Shrugging slightly Alec replied,"Yeah you're right. I had it all down in basic and the academy. Guess I just slipped, I'm still getting used to some of the cultural differences. Most of the time I'm okay." He laughed nervously as he added, "Guess it's a good thing I got it out of my system now."

Mizushima looked at Alec quizzically before it dawned on him. With an ah-ha look he asked, "Oh you're Nepleslian? Wow that's surprising, we don't get too many of you guys signing up now and days. So if you don't mind me asking what squadron are you getting assigned to?"

Alec seemed to stand up straighter, his chest slightly puffed out. He replied proudly with a smile on his face, "I have been assigned to the 2X-F21 Fighting Diamonds."

Mizushima's face suddenly looked stricken and slightly worried, as if Alec had said something very wrong. He just looked at the young pilot, eyes full of sympathy as he replied, "Oh...."

Alec's smile faltered a little as a look of worry began to creep across his face. He looked at the Ittô Heisho with a slight tone of concern forming in his voice. "Oh? What's 'oh'? What do you mean by 'oh'?"

Mizushima shrugged as he smiled apologetically, "It's just that I heard that your new CO can be a bit of a bitch is all. Like that introduction mistake you just made, she will eat you alive for that. Like seriously I hear she is a major ice queen." He continued trying not to laugh as he shoulders jittered. "That's a rough break Wyrick."

Alec swallowed a small lump in his throat as he shrugged trying to seem unperturbed as he threw on a fake smile. "Yeah well I'm sure she isn't THAT bad. I mean people talk, that doesn't mean it's all true or anything.....right?"

The older pilot shrugged as he replied, "Maybe, maybe not. It doesn't matter now though. With your orders already written up there isn't too much you can do about it. I guess you can just hope for the best. Who knows, maybe you're right, the stories could just be exaggerated from a few bad accounts." Laughing Mizushima lightly clapped a hand on the young pilot's shoulder. "Perk up kiddo, in my experience a duty station can still be a good place even if you have a bad CO. Just go in there and give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe it will all work out." Seeing that he clearly made the new guy nervous Mizushima decided to try and change the subject in order to make him feel better. "So why do you want to be a fighter pilot? You think you'll be getting all the chicks or something?"

Alec smiled as he shook his head, relieved to be thinking about something else. "No nothing like that. I know it may sound kind of corny but I want to be an ace pilot. I want to get my custom color scheme, my own squadron, and the works." He looked over his shoulder to the window that faced the star filled space as he continued. "But more than that, it's the feeling you get while you fly. The pressure on your body as you push the speed of a fighter. The cold almost nervous feeling as you pull off a trick no one else has the balls to do. The speed it’s just...." He turned back to face Mizushima. "...When I fly I get this feeling like all the things I have ever been looking for, for my entire life, are within my grasp and if I can just...fly a little faster, push myself a little more..... I can get them." No longer staring at Mizushima Alec seemed to stare off as he finished, "It just feels like I am doing what I was always meant to do. I feel....free." Recovering himself Alec let out a small chuckle as he met Mizushima's gaze. "I guess that sounded a little too cliché huh?"

The Ittô Heisho shook his head. He actually had a look of respect and understanding. He was a pilot as well and though he didn't quite feel the same he could relate to the young man. He couldn't help but at least be impressed by his passion, the kid certainly wasn't faking that. With another clap on his shoulder Mizushima turned to return to his pilot seat as he called back to Alec. "Hey tell you what, we'll bring her around the port side of the Heitan so you can get a good look at it before we dock."

Alec grinned at the pilot and nodded. "Hey thanks Mizushima." turning around, he returned to the port side window in order to get a good look at what was to become his new home.

The Heitan was in the process of deploying a squadron of fighters from the alpha bay. A dozen V8 Kawarime streaked away from the carrier and headed off on a vector away.

Atsui looked up when Ayaka came into the office. "So, I see we are getting some new blood for the Diamonds. Do you missing flying Shosa? I familiarized myself with your record. You really care about your pilots, even when you have to send them into harms way.

Shall I have the mess send up another carafe of coffee for you ma'am?" the 33M said looking at Atsui with her bright blue eyes.

"Sure, I still have a mountain of paperwork to review, believe me that is not something I look forward too." she said with a grin. "And yes, I do care about my pilot's being in charge of the Heitan just means instead of worrying about one group, I have fourteen squadrons of fighters, and the crew of this ship to think about."

"Better you than me ma'am, my shoulders are too tiny for that much responsibility." she said with a bow and flew out the doorway.

On the port side of the YSS Yukigumo the YSS Heitan was clearly visible. Alec watched in excitement and a little bit of awe as he watched the V8 Kawarimes launch, their aether flares streaking like shooting stars as they took off. In his mind he couldn't help but think, Soon that's going to be me out there. The ship's main color, light purple really seemed to shine against the dull grey color of its accent pieces. She may only look like a big rectangle, but to Alec she was the most beautiful rectangle he had ever seen. He felt a mixture of pride, excitement and nervousness gather around in his chest as they began to come about and start the docking process. Pretty soon the grand adventure he had imagined for himself wouldn't be just in his mind. It would be a real and tangible thing. But unlike dreams of the mind, real life adventures do not have guarantees of success. They can be life defining, either blessing you later in life with pleasant memories or haunting you with horrific nightmares. For better or worse Alec's was about to begin and it would be a lie to say he didn't feel the least bit anxious.

The Yukigumo began to enter the hanger bay, the lights overhead gleaming off its silver surface creating the illusion that it was glowing. The freighter shuddered slightly as it set down on the nonskid surface. Throughout the ship the crew made their final checks before informing flight command that they had safely finished docking. Mizushima turned to Alec and gave him a smile. "Well kid this it, we're here."

Alec nodded, reaching up to the high collar of his duty uniform and adjusting it. His normal uniform of the day would be the Type 32 Aerospace Flight Suit, but since this would be his first time meeting his CO he figured it would be considered more polite to come in wearing the dressier uniform. Taking a deep breath and blowing out slowly he prepped himself. "Okay this it." He turned and went down to the storage area to pick up his duffel bag. Hoisting the strap over his shoulder and grabbing his flight helmet, he gave the strap a slight squeeze before heading for the exit hatch.

Stepping outside of the Yukigumo Alec was even in more awe. The Heitan looked big from the outside but the inside seemed even more gigantic. The Hanger Bay just seemed mind blowing huge. He just took a moment to take it all in, watching the different members of the bay crews attending to their different jobs. To his right he could see a squadron of V8s being worked on. To his left he could see the Yukigumo wasn't the only supply ship to come in and members of the bay crew, probably Supply Department's shipping and receiving division were unloading them in a chain to a hover platform. The smell of machine oil, smoke, and ozone permeated the air. And the noise, so many machines and people all working on separate tasks.

Alec's thoughts were broken as Mizushima called from behind him. "Well don't just stand their Wyrick. Go on, get going. Don't want to keep your date waiting." He said the last part with a smirk and a wink.

Alec recovered himself as he tried to roll with the comment though he couldn't help the slight flushed feeling in his face. "Yeah sure, I'll see you around Mizushima."

An orange haired Neko was standing near the ramp in her Type 35 duty uniform with white panels. She had a datapad in one hand and small box tucked under her left arm. She looked up at Alec and then put away the datapad.

Noticing the Neko waiting for him he bid Mizushima a final farewell and headed down the ramp. As he approached her he flashed a smile, Always remember Alec give the ladies a good first impression. Straightening his shoulders out he introduced himself. "Hello there, Wyrick Alec-Santô Hei, I'm a fighter pilot." As if it wasn't obvious by his uniform. Noting how stupid that sounded and the total flop his attempt was at engaging the young women. He figured it better if he stopped any more romantic failure attempts and just get to business. Acting as though he need to clear his throat he continued, "I'm uh hear to see Numa Atsui-Taii. I am being transferred to the 21st. would you be so kind to show me the way. Or we could uh walk together if you want...maybe stop by and grab some drinks or whatever." Noticing that he was doing it again, and badly he just kind of nodded his head and said. "Maybe I should just ask the MEGAMI huh?"

"Yes, I have been waiting for you Wyrick-Santô Hei, fighter pilot. Numa-Shosa is in her office. She was promoted after your orders were cut, so make sure you get it correct when you meet her."

Upon hearing that he felt a short shot of panic followed by a slight sense of relief. Like the feeling one gets when they dodge a bullet. Better he knew that now then later. Nodding to the Neko he replied. "Oh good to know, thanks you really saved my bacon there um...I didn't catch your name."

"You didn't catch it because I did not say it. I am Fuji Aoi-Jôtô Hei. I have been requested to facilitate your arrival at the Captain's office. It seems in the past we have had problems with pilots who can dance among the stars, getting lost in the hallways.

You can place your bags over there on that push cart. The cargo folks will see that it gets to your billet.

Our MEGAMI is Hiromi, she sees all, hears all, but is the soul of discretion unless you are enacting a serious infraction of regulations. If you should find yourself lost, Hiromi can give you directions to your communicator."

Upon hearing Aoi's curt answer to his last statement he inwardly flinched. He couldn't help but think, Man if she is this bad I wonder what the Shosa is like? Getting himself refocused he nodded his head to show he understood he instructions. Thinking about getting lost in the hallway and her comment about the other pilots made him think of himself and how much he was sure he too would probably get lost here. Aoi may be used to it, but this ship was huge to Alec. He blew out a quick breath and despite feeling a little nervous he gave her a quick smile. "Well Fuji-Jôtô Hei do you mind if I give Hiromi here a supervised test run?" Without waiting for a reply Wyrick called out, "Hiromi can you inform Numa-Shosa that I have arrived and am on my way to her office? Oh an umm if you could direct me there as well that would be great."

"Numa-Shosa has already been notified of your arrival. I notified her when the ship you arrived on landed. I could give you directions, but as the Shosa has requested that Fuji-Jôtô Hei escort you as well as familiarize you with some of the pertinent locations. Hiromi's voice replied from multiple nearby speakers.

"Told you, she sees all.

Apologies. I am not being particularly kind. Let me start again.

Hello Wyrick-Hei to the YSS Heitan. She is the first of the Heitan-Class carriers. The design was requested by Mikasa Sorano-Taisho. The ship has 30 decks and is 990 meters long. She may not be as sleek and pretty as some of the other ship's in the fleet. But then she was built for a specific purpose. One that does not need all the curves and long lines."

Alec listened to the MEGAMI's reply and then Fuji's added note at the end. His eyes gazing to the ceiling as if that was where Hiromi was he commented, "Well I'm not going to lie, that is a little creepy. But I'll get used to it." Taking a look around at the hanger bay as Fuji gave her explanation of the ship he let out a whistle as she talked about the deck numbers and size. He looked at her and wore another smile. "Yeah she is a hell of a ship. So shall we get this underway? I am at your disposal, lead the way." As they where walking Alec perked up and asked, "So does the Shosa often send people down to the hanger bay to pick up new people?"

"Actually, Yes it is pretty much standard practice. With all the activity on the ship most of the time, it is easy for folks to get turned around."

"Ah I see. So....how long have you been stationed on the ship?" Alec inquired.

"I have been aboard the Heitan for 18 months, 23 days. I spend most of my time on the bridge or in operations.

This by the way is Gamma Bay, reserved for larger craft. About the only time you will be flying out of this bay is if you are not in a fighter." She said entering the zero-g passageway.

She floated down a little ways, then stopped. "Gamma deck uses zero-gravity hallways. The upper bays use standard passages. It helps make moving gear in and out of the bay easier."

Aoi resisted the urge to offer to help Alec, as a pilot he would have had plenty of zero g training so she did not want to insult him.

"We will stop at two places along the way. The first is the Diamonds briefing room, and then their billets.

Alec took to the zero g hallways easily enough. He followed Aoi listening to her talk about Gamma bay. When she was finished talking he inquired, "Are most of the hallways in the ship zero g?"

"Vertical hallways are. Once away from the Gamma bay we have standard hallways. When the 2XF was formed we had quite the mix of people. So the Taisho wanted a design that would accommodate them all." she said launching herself.

"Well does make sense. Must be easier on the ships power as well. So 18 almost 19 months huh? So how do you like it here?" Alec asked as he positioned himself and launched after her. He thought about what else she told him and chimed in after his initial question with another, "So the briefing room and the billets...." He gave a lop sided grin as he asked, "So give me the bad news. Who do I get as a room mate? He's probably a slob huh?"

"That would be up to the squadron commander. There is a spare billet, or she might put you in with Vas-Heisho. He's Nepleslian like you." She said.

"A fellow Nepleslian eh? That doesn't sound too bad though I wouldn't pass up the chance to have my own room." They appeared to have stopped at the door that Alrec assumed must belong to the briefing room. "So this is it huh?"

"The briefing room is for mission briefings. This room is only used by the Fighting Diamonds. Further down this hall is the billets. Standard Enlisted cabins. You can look at them later. At least now you know where they are. I will have Hiromi download the layout and internal marking data for you."

She stepped into another vertical passage. "The Shosa's cabin is two levels up. Once there you are on your own." Aoi floated up the shaft and exited at the appropriate level.

She walked two doors down, "This is the Shosa's Office. Good luck, don't let any scuttle butt fool you. She's good people. She'll give you a swift kick to the butt if you need it, but shoot straight with her and she'll do the same."

Alec looked at the door, feeling his anticipation coming back. He turned to Aoi, trying to hide his anxiousness. He smiled at her as he extended his hand. "Well Fuji Aoi-Jôtô Hei, thanks for the tour and everything. I appreciate it. Hopefully I'll see you around." He turned his attention back to the door, remembering why he was there.

Being out on the edge of known space was a bonus but not the reason he chose the 21st billet. His reason had a name, Numa Atsui. While he was back in training, many instructors commented on his natural talent. One in particular whose opinion Alec really respected likened him to a cadet he taught a while ago. One Fujioka Gin-Ittô Juni, was the instructor’s name. In his late fifties he had trained many pilots over the years. He saw early on that Alec had a rare talent. During one of their quarterly exams Alec scored in the top of his class, old man Gin complemented him but told him he had seen faster. He took Wyrick aside and showed him back logged recordings of one his favorite students. He had everything from simulator times to performance scores. Alec was humbled by them, he did his best out there and yet he wasn't touching those scores. His competitive spirit soared then. He had a goal, he had to beat those scores.

From that point on it was all he thought about, it was his unicorn. He logged in extra hours in training and did ghost runs against the simulated data of the pilot he was trying to match. He was far out pacing the people he was training with but he didn't even notice. Many of them took this as a slight like he didn't think they mattered, but the truth was all he saw was the aether flare of that pilot he was chasing. Devoting himself to practicing the moves and stunts of the other pilot in order to try and outperform the simulation. He learned a lot of tricks as well as better thruster management.

Finally with only two weeks left to graduation he managed to beat those scores. Old man Gin congratulated him on his devotion and ability but then managed to shock him once more. He said, “Not bad Wyrick, not bad. But you haven’t beaten her yet. This data is over ten years old. Try and imagine how she flies now.” Alec didn't know what to say to it. It felt like he had climbed a gigantic mountain just to realize there was another bigger mountain behind it to climb. Gin continued, “You know if you’re interested she is looking for pilots. She has her own squadron. It’s out in the boons but if you want a chance to really fly with her instead of a simulation, that’s where you have to go. You could learn a lot from her and when she is done with you, well I think you will be one hell of a pilot let’s just say that.” That was all it took to make up Alec’s mind. And now here was, about to meet the person whose shadow he was chasing all through training.

Standing there it felt like he was about to meet a movie star, or the Empress. You spend so much time hearing about a certain individual they become famous. Finally doing his best to shake his nervousness, he called out to the MEGAMI, "Hiromi can you please let the Shosa know I am here?"

Atsui was going over the latest batch of ship reports, supply reports, fighter reports, intelligence reports, crew reports. She had multiple volumetric images in an arc above her desk. Each one scrolled as she reviewed it and acknowledge it. Argh, I would rather be hip deep in a swarm of NMX battlepods than deal with all these reports. How long has it been since I logged some flight time. Probably too long if I'm getting cranky. Think I will take my bird out when we complete our next jump. Even if its just for 30 minutes, it will be good.

"Shosa, sorry to disturb your thoughts, but Wyrick-Santo Hei, has arrived at your door and is requesting permission to enter." Hiromi said from the speaker on Atsui's desk.

"Great, time to talk with another bright eyed pilot who fancies himself the next ace of the fleet. Well, its that or more reports. Send him in." She said dismissing the volumetric display in front of her. She looked around the carafe that Ayaka had requisitioned had not arrived. 'Damn." she said to herself.

The MEGAMI chimed in to Alec, “Wyrick-Santo Hei, Shosa has cleared you for entry. Good luck.” "Thank you Hiromi." Alec pressed the button for Numa-Shosa’s office door. When the hatch slid open he stepped inside. He took in the entire office at a glance, though it felt like a lot longer. Finally the moment he had been waiting for had arrived. His ‘bright’ blue eyes found her sitting at the desk. Seeing her there was surreal. In his mind there was a quick flash of him looking at her picture down in the graduation hall of the academy. She and the rest of her class were standing near a back then new V2 ‘Uirko’ Torpedo Bomber.

It took him a few seconds to put all this together, creating a few seconds of awkward silence between the two. Finally he got himself together. Feeling a little embarrassed his face flushed slightly as he proceeded with his introduction. Immediately standing up straight, getting his military bearing, he pulled off the best bow he could. Speaking clearly, his voice not containing the quiver and excitement he felt. “Good afternoon Numa Atsui-Shosa, I am Wyrick Alec-Santo Hei. It’s a pleasure to be here…” with only a half second pause he added, “…and a pleasure to meet you ma’am.”

Atsui watched as Alec entered the office. She watched his face as well as his body language. It was clear that something of her reputation was at play. She kept her face neutral during his entrance. It was obvious he was flustered, but he did remember to come to attention and to bow. After that things went south quickly. She almost expected him to put his hand out for her to shake.

Time to put things back on track, she thought.

"Wyrick-Santo Hei, let me remind you of the proper method of reporting to your CO. Walk to within three steps of the desk, come to attention. Then in a firm voice say 'Wyrick Alec-Santo Hei, Reporting as ordered ma'am.' then bow.

Would you care to try that again? Or shall we just move forward and chock that up as a lesson learned?" she asked fixing him with her pale blue eyes.

Idiot!! Alec thought as he immediately did a mental face palm. To make such a rookie mistake at this point was ridiculous to him. After all it wasn’t like basic was THAT long ago. Doing his best not to let his embarrassment show, he stood up straighter and responded. “Forgive me Numa Atsui-Shosa, I’ll do it again.” She had offered him a way out but in his opinion he needed to pay for the mistake even if the consequence was something small such as doing it again. By doing it again he hoped to drill it into his head to never forget this lesson.

Exiting the room he then re-entered, came to within three paces of her desk. Making sure his form was as crisp as possible he come to attention. He did pretty well when it came to drill in basic and he applied those skills here. Engaging a thousand yard stare, in a firm voice he announced, “Wyrick Alec Santo-Hei, reporting as ordered ma’am!” He then did the most proper bow he could muster. Keeping his angles almost perfect.

Atsui smiled inwardly at the choice that the rookie had selected. It earned him a few points in her personally tally. She leaned slighting forward in her chair and gave a nod of her head in response to his bow.

"At ease Santo-Hei, take a seat pilot and we will commence with the interview." she replied.

“Aye aye ma’am.” Alec then walked forward and pulled out the chair in front of Numa-Shosa’s desk and took a seat. He sat up straight in his chair, keeping himself focused in order to attempt not to make any more mistakes.

"Okay, let's take care of the standard question. Why did you join the Star Army, and more important, decide you want to be a fighter pilot?" she asked

Okay basic stuff, they asked this in flight school. Alec thought to himself. Answering in a clear voice, “Ma’am I joined the Star Army in order to make a difference ma’am. I felt this was the right way to go about it.” He paused for just a moment between responses. “As for being a pilot, it’s what I felt I have always been, the Star Army just made it official. I was born to fly ma’am.”

"I don't see a pair of wings on your back. So I do not know about being born to fly. But your instructors give you good praise and your scores are good.

So, what are your short term goals? Where do you hope to see yourself in a year?"

Alec barely kept himself from blushing ate her response to his gung-ho answer. Feeling his heart beat in his chest a little bit faster he answered her next question. “Well ma’am I have to admit I am rather ambitious. I hope to have a commissioned position by then and if the situation allowing, the commander of my own squadron.” Giving it just a moment before continuing, he knew it sounded ballsy but he figured better to be honest so at least she knew where his intentions lay. “Again ma’am I realize it is a tall order, but I have the drive to do whatever I can in order to see it happen.”

"That is ambitious to go from a Santo-Hei to an officer. Especially in peace time. I will not promise that you would be a Shoi in a year. But I can promise that you will rise and fall based on your performance." she said with a hint of a smile.

"Also out here on the Frontier, we are often called to do things normally other troops would do. We often find ourselves in a situation without time to call for backup. You any good at thinking creatively?"

Alec smiled inwardly. Finally onto something I am good at. He thought as he answered the Shosa’s question. “Ma’am on multiple training runs as well as my practical exams I was noted for my strategy and on the spot leadership. I hope not to sound too arrogant ma’am but thinking creatively is what I do. Give me an opportunity out there and I promise not to disappoint you.” It took a great deal of will power not to let the smile show on his face as he spoke.

"I will also be sure to remind of that when you are stuck on a swampy landing site. With fog so thick you can cut it and have pirates attack from the trees." she said with a grin.

"Okay Santo-Hei, I am going to accept your placement. You will be assigned to the Diamonds which is currently under the command of Tamahagane-Santo Juni. The Diamonds are off ship, but we will be returning to their location in a little while. so I suggest in the mean time that you get your gear stowed and then go check out your fighter. You got a new one tail number 35-0193. That is all." She said as she slid a pair of patches one set for the Heitan and the other for the 21st.

"You will obviously not have an assigned power armor so that one that came with you will go into inventory.

You will also be issued the following
  • 2 Aerospace Flight Suit
  • 1 Star Army Footlocker
You are dismissed."

Alec finally couldn't help but smile himself when she mentioned the swampy landing site. He replied finally starting to feel comfortable, “I’m counting on it ma’am.”

He listened to the rest of her instructions and nodded is affirmation of them. As she slid the patches over to him, he took them into his left hand. Gazing down at them he finally realized it had happened, he was in a squadron. No longer just a pilot, he was now a member of the 21st. Looking up and meeting the Shosa’s eyes he replied. “Thank you ma’am….”

He stopped for just amount considering what to say next, finally he thought to hell with thinking just say how you feel. “Ma’am, I just wanted to say I won’t let you down. I know I am rookie still, but I won’t bring shame to this squadron or this ship. I believe I have a lot to offer here and that’s not arrogance ma’am that’s fact.” He let his gaze slip to the model of the V8 on her desk for just a moment before his eyes met her squarely. He was suddenly sure that she could completely understand how he felt. Slightly smiling as he added a play on words that took into account her call sign being based around a card game. “I would like you to think of me as your 'wild card'. When you need it I promise to bring you the win. I know talk is cheap until proven otherwise. I look forward to the opportunity.”

Standing up straight at attention, he once again regained his thousand yard stare. "Aye aye ma'am!" He then pivoted around and exited her office. The thoughts in his mind now of a fact that he had reached a pinnacle in his life and for better or for worse there was no turning back. He went out to check his assigned billet and later down to the hanger bay to see his fighter. It was time to stop playing at being a fighter pilot and really put it into action.
