Does it seem like forcing newcomers to immediately wikify...

...their bios is scaring them off early?

I'll be honest. The wiki software is fun and efficient, but was hard to get into for a long time. I'm worried that some of the potential new players might be avoiding submitting because they just can't quite wrap their heads around the system at the moment.

The wiki is an essential part of participating in the site and they NEED to get used to it. Besides, it's not like they have to format it themselves--the auto template page does that for them. Super easy.

When I first joined, I had no idea how to work the wiki. I was flat out lost. It took me a month or so before I could really even start looking for the stuff I needed. So I somewhat believe it's a bit much for a first character.

You pick up the experience with time, but a first character is a HUGE learning curve. I mean, I made my first wiki profile just by copy and pasting someone else's and then filling in the right info. I had no idea about the automatic template.

So ya, it becomes easy, but for beginners... not so much.

Really? I didn't know jack about wikis when I first joined yet I was able to figure it out in like 2 or 3 hours.

There's also a link to the formatting guide on the edit screen, which says how to do the formatting yourself if you have to.

Um...

I'm new and i managed to figure it out. But then, i have experience with writing html, so i could guess what i was looking for.

But what really helped was the ability to edit other user/character pages. That let me see the whole code for their page, so then i could copy and paste away to my hearts content and modify it to suit my needs

When I started wiki'ing it was pretty hard, and had to learn through trial and error. Now, 3 months later, I'm scoffing and smugly smirking at people that say it's hard.

Now this is a two-edged sword, or whatever:

1. New people, if you learn the wiki, YOU TOO CAN SCOFF.

2. Old people, it's not good to be smug about it. Help the new guys out a bit.

Don't suppose we have a sandbox area for new people to test their wiking abilities out in? And if so, a link to it in the guide would be most beneficial.

Why don't we make a plain-text template?

Also, it's a good idea if we have some tips.

My favorite: Copy your document out of the wiki into notepad or textedit and paste it back when you've done some work on it.

Makes life easier.

  • * Link to sandbox added
  • * Tips & Tricks section added
  • * Adding Character Portraits section added
  • * Link to SA IRC channel added

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming!

We already have one, and it's already linked to on the character creation guide.

Yes, it's here.

Also, why did you put a second copy of each anonymous character art on the wiki? They're already on the wiki under the corresponding factions.
