Hello everyone…

My name is Eduard and I like roleplaying! I have quite some roleplaying experience in chats and forums. Lately however, I mostly did pen & paper and now want to get back to text-based online roleplaying. I heard about Star Army on the web and read about the universe in the wiki, some threads on the forums and finally I decided to join. And now here I am. I have mostly done this in German (my native language) though, so please bear with me, while I practice my English creative writing skills and broaden my vocabulary.

We've got a lot of foreign users. Content and your own entertainment come before clever writing.

If you can enjoy yourself, you're welcome among us.

Welcome, Eduard! Osaka hit the nail on the head, so I'll shamelessly repeat it - if you can enjoy yourself, you'll feel quite welcome here. I know of several new instances when non-native English speakers have significantly improved their writing skills in the language using forum-based roleplaying as a medium.

First off, don't be frightened by the daunting amount of information on the wiki. There is a LOT, and you aren't expected to know it all by heart. When I'm on here, I probably have four or five wiki tabs open at any given point, on average, for reference while I'm writing posts. You can also jump into IRC chat (linked at the top of the page, just beneath the Star Army logo). There are usually a few people on at any given time, and almost everyone is willing to help answer any questions people have. If you ask something and no one replies, you might have just gotten (un)lucky enough to catch everyone away from their keyboard. Just be patient and someone will happily answer you.

The Open Roleplaying forum is worth looking at if you want some writing practice, or to familiarize yourself with the way things work, or just want to jump straight into the action, because they do not require any kind of prior approval to start roleplaying. As a courtesy, however, it's usually a good idea to PM the original creator of a thread to ask permission to post on their plot, but unless they specifically state particular restrictions, it's usually okay to jump in on one. Alternatively, you can create your own, and see if anyone jumps aboard with you. I still ask that you observe a PG-13 rating, since those forums are publicly viewable, of course, be respectful of other players, and stay to the best of your ability within SARP lore, but other than that, you have a lot of freedom there. The material posted there is treated as "quasi-canon" unless a staff member or GM adopts some of it in their plots, and/or adds it to the wiki.

If you want more consistency and a regular GM to run scenery for you, then you should look at the list of active plots. This is by no means an exhaustive list of places you can get involved, but rather a list of the most active and most high-profile plots currently being run on Star Army. There is a wealth of information on each, including how fast the plots move, how many players are involved, who the GM is, and the requirements for joining. Each plot also has its own wiki page detailing the specifics of that particular scenario.

Welcome to SARP! I hope you have a great time!

We've got a lot of foreign users
If Star Army is American, then you are a "foreigner" too, OsakanOne! But on the internet, I don't think of other users as "foreigners," just people who live elsewhere. I prefer to say we have an international community. The servers are hosted in the U.S. but we have users from many places across the globe, including non-English-speaking countries like Czech Republic, Russia, and Japan. Many of the users are excellent writers because they have studied English extensively to learn it, whereas native speakers may take it for granted.

Eduard: Welcome to Star Army! I am Wes, the original creator of Star Army. The universe you have discovered is a combination of the ideas of many people. I look forward to your contributions, too!

It's great to be welcomed like that. ^.^ I was not entirely sure how American or international StarArmy is but merely assumed that would not be a problem. I'm glad that I was right. So, now I need to dive into roleplaying…

Reactions: Wes
I think what I meant then was a lot of our users aren't native English speakers.

If you have any trouble or need any help, get on the IRC and we'll help as best we can :3

So, now I need to dive into roleplaying…
The fastest way is to join an Open Roleplaying forum thread. There are no requirements, you can just find one you like and join in (although it is encouraged to read the related OOC thread). If you don't see one that you like, you can also create your own.

As the ultimate keeper of the overall lore, I am available and happy to definitively answer all your questions about the Star Army universe. I look forward to your questions; as with any fictional universe, it has its holes and its edges, and sometimes they don't get filled or defined until someone asks the right question.

What about timezones? I reckon there's some more synchronous chat RP here… Do you manage to do this across the globe?

Most of our RP is done on the forums, so it's usually not an issue. For chat RP, it's up to each plot's game master to arrange something suitable. In the past, I know of at least one RP that was specifically created with British timezones in mind, but that was a long time ago.
