Himiko Project Draft for Conception Approval

Fred

Retired Staff
Following the launch of the YSS Miharu, a pathfinder prototype for the prospective Himiko-class escort meant to fill the roles our Arashi and Yui warship classes fill, the design team of the Miharu went over their design plans and the simulations on the performance of the ship (along with its early combat performance in its first skirmishes).

Given the circumstances of the war, the limited resources available and the high costs of the current existing ship designs, they drafted up the following resource outline as a proposal for the conception of the Himiko-class relating to the expected amounts of resources the design would require to meet the needs of the Star Army.

  •
HIMIKO-CLASS ESCORT
    RESOURCE REQUIREMENT OVERVIEW

    PROPULSION:
    • Combined Field System (150 RSP)
Maximum FTL speed of 15 000c. Meant for transit within a star system or for tactical FTL jumps.

      Hyperspace Fold System (43 RSP)
Transfer speed of 0.43 light years per minute. Meant for inter-system travel. Roughly equivalent to 225 000c.

      Gravimetric Engines (200 RSP)
Offers a maximum sublight speed of 0.2c. Going beyond subjects a vessel to time dilation, making the CFS better for the .21 to .99c speeds.
    POWER SYSTEMS:
    • Primary Aetheric Generator and Capacitor System (400 RSP)
Single unit in engineering, expected to furnish the necessary power for most fundamental ship functions.

      Secondary Aetheric Generators (400 RSP)
Twin units, each positioned to give direct power feed to the gravimetric engines in the wing sections. Output sufficient to provide backup power should the central unit suffer damage.
    LIFE SUPPORT:
    • Environmental Systems (90 RSP)
Expected to support up to 90 passengers at maximum capacity.

Hemosynth Conduits and Nodal Systems (100 RSP)
Includes full HSCS tubing along with full functionalities of PANTHEON-based nodal systems with centralized fabrication room.

Note: The Himiko-project plans to drop the Miharu's auxiliary ship in favor of a shuttlebay. The ship's small size render the practical use of an integrated vessel dubious.
    ELECTRONICS:
    • Escort Integrated Electronic Suite (100 RSP)
Central E-IES unit to manage ship operations.

Sensor and Communication Suite (400 RSP)
Includes the main array along with WARMS, RDD and Tachyon channels.
    DEFENSES:
    • Yamataium hull armor (2000 RSP)
75 cm-thick single-layered hull with zesuaium spaceframe. Sections included: Right Wing, Left Wing, Prow, Core, Torpedo Launcher. Rated durability of 8 in all locations.

      Combined Field-Based Shielding (1200 RSP)
Shields strength set to support heavy escort roles. Defensive rating of 6.
    WEAPONS:
    • Type 30 Torpedo Launcher System (500 RSP)
Compatible with AS-type torpedo casings; 5-slot clip type loading system with 2 loading arms; rapid-fire single-tube, 15 degrees forward-and-rear firing arcs.

      Type 30 Phase-Transition Cannon (250 RSP)
Similar to the Miharu's main aetheric cannon, with only the beam mode and no attached capacitor banks. 30 degrees forward firing arc.

      Turreted Positron Cannons (180 RSP)
Two units, mounted in reinforced swivel turrets forward and rear of the vessel with a 60 degree firing arc.

Rapid-Delivery Variable Pod Synthesizers (84 RSP)
Similar to the Miharu's multi-purpose pods launcher. Designed to have 12 pods active at one time. Rapid deployment and configuration versatility are expected to compensate for the lower amount of units active at one time.
                  • ESTIMATED TOTAL:
                  • 6 097

ALTERNATE PROPOSALS:

Possible variants could reinforce the hull armor with Xiulurium-coated zesuaium stealth plating yamataium plating, which would increase the resource cost by 1250. Easily applied at refits should the need be felt.

Also, the Miharu's regenerative shields could also be used. For the advantage of resisting weapons with shield piercing properties (tunneling cannons, most torpedoes). This would require the shield cost to be doubled as well as the installation of a third secondary aetheric generator in engineering to compensate for the heightened energy use. Though this would greatly increase the ship's survivability to anti-ship weapons, it would also increase production cost by an extra 1400. Applicable in a refit.

This document is open for discussion and debate. It is ultimately meant to be viewed by KFY's representative (that'd be Wes) to determine if this should see production or not. If so, I'll get to building it, similarly to how I did with the Miharu.

We could always upgrade the shields and offset the cost by removing the stealth armor.

Come to think of it, when we refer to reinforced Yamataiaum, we are talking about a yamataiaum hull covered with xiulurium-coated zesuaium plates, right? That's the way it is with the Sakura-class gunships, I believe.

So, the improved plating would incidentally be part of the stealth plating too. I shall adjust the proposal to reflect that.

This would allow the Himiko-class to have two easily obtainable add-ons (the improved shielding and the better stealth/zesuaium plating) in contested sectors while other Himiko models serving elsewhere could be the less costly basic version, which would be upgradable should the need rise (there's a difference between patrols and freighter escort vs. war against the Mishhu).

Of mention - in case it wasn't noticed - the Himiko-class has propulsion systems which are vastly below part of current KFY standards. Zakalwe suggested the STL speed might be a bit low for when the ship would need to use its CFS to do other tasks like concentrate on shielding, projected energy beams or deploying interdiction fields... but otherwise while I might agree that raising FTL speeds to .75~.80c might be a good idea, I don't think the CFS FTL and foldspeed need to be higher.

CFS-based FTL speeds are mostly used within solar systems. At 15 000c, you can cross over the solar system from the sun and reach the most distant solar system body (Sedna, 90 AU away from the sun) in 3 seconds. This proves it is quite sufficient for the use it is put to. Seeing that CFS devices are one of the mos costly element on Star Army vessels, economy there in favor of hyperspace fold drives seems a wise thing to do.

In circumstances when an hyperspace fold drive is not useable, such as in a nebulous environment... the top speeds reached by KFY starships so far are around 11 700c - so, the ship merely travels at 2/3 of it's usual speed, instead of being reduced to 1/30th like the Sakura gunships.

Alternatively, if the fold drive are just plain damaged, 15 000c is sufficient to cross over 1.7 light years in an hour; or 41 light years in a day... which is enough to cross from the center of the Empire to one of its outer boundaries. This looks reasonable.

As for the reduced power of the fold system, 0.43 light years/minute is actually 15 times faster than the CFS FTL speed. It allows to cover 40 light years in the span of around 81 minutes (1 hours 21 minutes). Is this slower than most modern KFY vessels? Yes.

Are faster speeds actually necessary? For rapid response vessels like the Sakura-gunships; perhaps. But for ships whom merely patrol from within specific boundaries, hold garrisons at worlds or just explore out of our territorial boundaries with the intent of exploring (especially in nebulas), this is hardly an impediment. If greater speeds are needed, nothing stops a Himiko escort from going piggyback with a larger Irim, Ayame or Chiharu warship to reach its destination faster if speed is truly necessary for a deployment - after all, they are meant to be escort vessels when operating within a squadron or fleet.

The huge advantage with trying to be economical with the engine output is the reduce power usage, which can go to weaponry and defenses (unlike the Miharu, which had a considerable handicap there) and also holds the non negligible advantage of being a good-quality, inexpensive ship models to produce. For the resources needed to build a Sakura gunship, nearly 3 Himikos could be built - each being nearly as effective as the Sakura light gunship in term of combat performance.

If this philosophy can be successfully applied, it could put in question the whole building scheme of currently used Star Army vessels (for example, one could maintain that it would be more economical to limit the Sakura to a 20 000c capable-CFS and a 0.59 ly/m fold system - the light gunship might not actually need more), but the resources and power saved by such approaches would be sizeable.
