Right, yes I remember the rank thing. However, the Purple heart was started in 1780. I must have missed a discontinuation or something.

The Badge of Military Merit wasn't technically discontinued following the American Revolution, but it wasn't awarded between 1783 and 1932.

In its place there was the Meritorious Service Citation Certificate, then the wound chevron during WWI.

Originally, yes, but he could have exchanged it for a Purple Heart starting last year (1932).
