How do the new enlistment contracts work?

Doshii Jun

OK, so I has a question about dis.

There are soldiers already in the military. How do they work? Are their old contracts (especially for Neko) suddenly invalid, and they need to rejoin? Are they automatically signed up again? If so, can they decline to sign up again and continue under the old contracts, so they can resign when they thought they would?

People already in the Star Army are automatically enlisted (but receive credit and benefits for time already served) with the new contract, unless they specifically request to Star Army Personnel Management not to be. If they don't agree to serve under the contract, then they will probably be discharged, or held under the old system if they owe the military some time.

The contract is the Star Army's way of putting down in writing what existed before, since there were soldiers who were supposed to be serving their country that instead walked off to the UOC. With the contract, soldiers have to promise not to run away like the UOCers did.

Of course, in theory, a character could do one of two things in that case. Ask for honorable discharge, or should that fail, leave and seek asylum in either Nepleslia or the UOC. Since neither of the two really have a vested interest in sending people off to be executed by Yamatai, deserters living there would be fine.

If the contracts are drawn up in 3-year increments, that would mean Yukari is actually two years away from retirement, instead of one.

Or is it that officers can resign at any time AFTER three years?

I updated it so enlisted dudes can resign after three years, too, if they don't want to reenlist. I also updated the oath. Remember resigning means no retirement benefits.

If the contracts are drawn up in 3-year increments, that would mean Yukari is actually two years away from retirement, instead of one.
How many years has she been in?

She's been in 7 years, technically. She was one year away from having her contract up. She's already elected to take no retirement benefits, instead choosing to make money.

Thanks for updating that stuff.

That means she's eligible now. Remember, though, that because Nekos can potentially live forever, that the length of retirement is based on the length of service and is finite.

... Wait, what?

You're saying that if she serves eight years, she retires for eight years, then must return to the military?

She wouldn't have to come back to the military, but the military would stop giving her free money after the retirement period expires.

Ha-ha, oh wow... Thats a clever way to keep reaming the populace to continue service.

"Hey you can retire... see you again in three years when the money dries up. Sorry about your post traumatic stress, hope it goes away before then!"

Also... wait... Nekovalkryja live forever? Since when was this established?

I think he might be referencing the fact that because they could get a new body before their old one expired they could in theory live forever (neko bodies start aging ~75 i believe).

Wes basically said that because of Neko lifespans, and ST backups, the retirement has to be cut off somewhere. That's when he decided to cut it off β€” at length of service.

Precisely why Yukari's going to do things on her own, without the government's help.

Besides, Neko's are drawn to trying new things and creative outlets. So i suspect, given a few years, they wouldn't need to re-enlist to make money

Yeah, the idea is for Nekos and Yamataians to serve a decent length of time to build up an investment that they can use to support themselves when it's time to start in the civilian world. The reason it's only six years for retirement is because while it's not that long IRL (most IRL retirement requires 20 years) that's a long time for an RP, and after six years most players will probably want to retire their old veteran characters anyway, and start with new ones.
