Approved Character Keiran LaCrosse

Done and done. Any comments, or info on the spots where I left a '?' ? Also- what, if any, are the rules on familiar type pets? I'm tempted to either have some kind of robotic animal or possibly one of the sprite-like pilots to be a companion for him. It won't affect the game much, just to add a little flavor to his character and playing. If there's an issue, that's fine. ;) If not, any information or preferences on what they should not be able to do would be useful.

I think you are missing the "Communications" skill if you want your char to be in the Star Army. This would be one of his weak areas, obviously, but it needs to take up one skill slot nevertheless.

I'd like Thad to give some constructive comments on the history, as always. As long as the character's skills in mechanics is offset by defects in personality, or willpower, I think it's okay. But Thad has more experience in this, so I want to hear what he has to say.

As for a familiar, if you don't want to go through the lengthy (and painful) process of designing one yourself and getting it approved, I recommend requesting a NH-8 series Neko assistant. Wes can give you more information on the specifics. (I personally miss seeing the little things running around in the RP.)

Where would I find information on the 8's? I think it was originally the 12 I saw-though they might be too aggressive to be of much help. Is there a listing for general technology and the like? I haven't checked the boards yet so I may answer my own question in a minute or two. If I'm right, no need to answer.
As for the skill, I'm not sure what to give up to take communications. I think the 'information tech' may make up for his marginal knowledge of how to get in touch- but I'm not sure if he's accustomed enough with the equipment and the like to use it well enough to merit a skill with it? I could possibly give up the arts skill, as that's mostly just flavor for his backstory- but it might detract from the character. Fighting would probably be the one that would have to go if I need to choose one. It's mostly their for utility in case he finds himself in a situation where he would need to be able to defend himself- depending on how much time is spent aboard ship and the like, it might be something he never needs. Most games I've been in have people in combat for the majority of the time and most of that is spent as troops or otherwise- I didn't want to take away from him being playable in those kinds of situations if that's what he needed to be able to do. You'd be a better judge of its usefulness than I would, however.

Right, right. It's the NH-12 series that I was talking about.

It's too hot lately. B)

For Star Army personnel, the following four skill elements are required at the minimum:

Communications (need to be able to receive and acknowledge orders)
Fighting and Physical (need to be able to defend himself with weapons)
Information Tech (need to be able to access computers)
Mathematics (need basic math skills)

See the CCG for details.

Let me get back to you on the NH-12 info. At this point, I'm hoping Wes will show up and clarify things on the subject. :D

Hum-alright. I suppose I'll do away with the arts bit. I assume that the skills are areas where he would be exceptionally skilled(and thus the limit)- so taking that away shouldn't hurt too much. So long as he can do fun things with what he's got and keep everything running well, I don't have a problem with it not being particularly aesthetically pleasing. So, would this be better?

Name: Keiran LaCrosse (Key-ran Luh Crah Say)

General Information
Species: Nepleslian
Gender: Male
Age: ?(24ish)

Family/Creators:
Hadrian LaCrosse (Mother, Deceased)
Allister LaCrosse ( Father, Deceased)

Faction: Star Army
Occupation: Robotics Specialist
Rank: Santo Hei
Current Assignment: ?

Physical Characteristics
Height: 6'6"(198 cm) (varies with what equipment he's using)
Weight: 166 lbs (75 kgs)

Build and Skin Color: Muscular build with lightly bronzed skin
Face and Eye Color: Slender face with a unique set of circular, blue-tinted glasses. Eyes are gray. He looks both intelligent and handsome(though he tends to be a bit withdrawn in reality, despite looks). Eyes are cybernetic, but it is not overly obvious from casual distances.
Hair color and Style: Long, voluminous black hair that goes down to his back. He keeps it tied back with a few braids at the end to keep it under control. The hair tends to cover portions of his face, but it is relatively uniform in length.

Distinguishing Features:
Much of Kieran's body is cybernetic. Both arms and legs as well as a portion of his shoulders. Thanks largely to his own talents, they aren't very obvious unless he chooses to make them as such. He benefits from the Nepleslian' fondness for such devices and was fortunate enough to be raised around them.
His glasses, composed of two metal semi-circles support two circular lenses made of a blue-tinted glass. The opacity of the lenses tends to vary with the light placed upon them. The exact reason as to why he wears them is a mystery in general, as his cybernetic eyes offer him enhanced vision, in addition to better-than normal clarity in normal visual ranges. Most people who know about his eyes just assume they're decoration, or a way of keeping the truth about his eyes hidden.

Psychological Characteristics
Personality:
Kieran is kind and compassionate and thoroughly dedicated to whatever he sets his mind to. Usually that involves his work-'obsessed' is a slight term when it comes to how he feels about technology in general, and anything mechanical gets his attention that much easier. His interest does not go without merit- though he is still new to the field, his abilities are being recognized as he strives to accomplish better, faster cybernetics and similar technology.
Around others he can be somewhat withdrawn and often requires someone with an assertive personality to get him to open up. Much of his shyness stems from his past, but it has been slowly fading as time passes-enough for him to decide that he could handle a military atmosphere.
Kieran is likeable for many of those reasons. Some admire or find amusement in his obsession with his craft and others enjoy being around him, knowing that they have a friend that can be counted on in any situation.
Despite his uneasiness in social situations, when doing his work he can be talkative, and the few times he saw combat before his military venture he handled himself well.

Likes: Technology in general. Technology byproducts. A good place to sleep. Good food. Good friends.
Dislikes: Fighting. Social situations involving large groups of people. Speaking in front of others.
Goals: In general, to be the most skilled and recognized cybernetic and robotics inventor possible. He doesn't aspire to be the best(part of his social stigma)- only the best that he can be.

History(somewhat condensed)
Keiran LaCrosse was born in a run down offshoot of a large city on his home planet. His intelligence had brought some small bit of money to his family as he grew older, as his natural knack for fixing things made him a popular person in his community, as the cybernetics of the residents wore down. Of course, he could work on just about anything-and played the part of grease monkey on more than one occasion. Those who knew the word often talked of him as a savant-and they may have been right. But it was probably just his thirst for knowledge and the desire to put it to use that drove him.
That drive eventually got his parents killed.
When word spread to the city of a talented boy that could do the things he did at such a young age, it wasn't long before a gang went looking for him, thinking to sell him off to a repair store or something of the like. Being good parents, Mr. and Mrs. LaCrosse objected, and were subsequently dealt with in the usual fashion of the day. Keiran found himself waking up in a cage the next day in something of a slave pen. Afraid and scared, he had no voice to cry, but he was smart enough to understand where he was. Though he was marketed as a tech-wiz, it was ultimately his charming looks that led him to the home of a Cordelia Tercia, and her daughter Ashlynn.
He was to be Ashlynn's 'pet'. She was some eight years older than he was, and it was hardly appropriate for a woman of their stature to be doing her own work. Keiran took to his duties with lackluster enthusiasm, but as time passed he settled into it and nearly forgot he had a life from before. What free time he might have had was taken by a number of teachers and trainers, each seeking to have him do something else. Some were for music, others for combat- in general, to make him more useful as his mistress grew older. As Ashlynn aged, she found interest in things that he would not accompany her for, and it was in this time that his dormant lust for technology would return. The large family library was not up to date on the latest technology by far, but they contained within them a reminder of his old desires and the fundamentals that led him to where he is today.
His life like that would go on for thirteen years. Some of it was pleasant, much of it was not, and most of it was spent in submission to the girl he had been given to. The psychological damage he took from being ordered about and forced into quiet conformity still haunts him to this day.
Ironically, his freedom would come in the worst possible way- or at least it seemed that way at first. A rare virus crept into his body-wether through foul play or bad luck he was never certain-and slowly ate away at his body. The extremeties were the first to go. Ashlynn, possessing a fondness for her pet, took few shortcuts when it came to having him treated, but it would be too late. His limbs were no longer so useful, what he had left of them, that is. Ashlynn's final gift to him would be the one that inspired him to take his secret hobby as his career. Using a portion of her generous allowance, she had his limbs removed and refitted with top of the line cybernetics. Although she was mostly interested in realism for personal reasons, the extra strength, speed, and endurance he found in them over the next year would prove useful on many occasions. Most people go through a brief period of withdrawl after gaining their new limbs unless they had them installed purposefully. He embraced them. He was one with the technology he held so dear- and it gave him something to learn from.
Miss Ashlynn would find and marry her husband in that year. Considering their 'intimate' relations, it was probably for the best that she freed him. The next year would be spent confused. He had been dictated by the whims of the woman who owned him for such a large portion of his life that he lacked the ability to direct himself. He wandered and did what he could with the money he had been given, but as usual it would be a strange bit of fate that led him to where he is now. An officer of some rank happened to have damaged his arm in the course of a battle and was headed to the local expert when Keiran saw him. The man had his arm repaired shortly after Keiran worked up the nerve to introduce himself, and Keiran found himself in a training program for just that sort of work by the next week.

Skills:
1) Engineering
Keiran is exceptionally skilled in the design and construction of most technology. As he has devoted most of his free time for the better part of his life to the studyof any technology he could get his hands on(and some that he couldn't), there is little that he can't create given the time. Likewise, he can repair just about anything by applying this knowledge. It may not always work as well as it did(unless he's familiar with it), he can almost always get it to work. He specializes in robotics, however, and is exceptionally skilled in creating human-like bodies and component parts.
2) Fighting and Physical
Keiran's history as a slave for the better part of his life put him into a few rough situations. Being his owner's only slave, he was enlisted into a martial training program for most of his indenture-the better part of twelve years. Although he never looks to get into a violent situation, he's surprisingly capable of defending himself. He never needed to use his training for body guard purposes, but it does explain his physical fitness when one considers his hobbies.
3) Information Tech.
A large part of making a good robot is making good software. Keiran knows this as well as anyone else, and has extensively studied programming. It's the closest thing to a second language he possesses, and he does it well.
4) Entertainment
Thanks to his former master/mistress, Keiran was taught a number of ways to please his owner. He is extremely gifted in playing the saxophone, and this is one of his few escapes from his work. He knows every note and every emotion that can be spouted from the instrument and often plays in private to keep from drawing too much attention. He is marginally skilled in the piano- enough to play a song to its last note and make it sound how it should, but not enough to consider himself a master of the instrument by any means.
Lastly, as he aged into his teenage years, his mistress saw fit for him to learn new ways to please her. A specialty trainer spent a few nights a week with him for no less than five months instructing him on how to please a woman, and his mistress enjoyed his company at night for the following 6 years. It has been a year or two since he's had reason to use any of that, but he's skilled nonetheless.
By and large his talents have to be coaxed out of him for anyone to find out about them- he rarely would approach someone and offer. He has, however, played for a few people to keep them from spreading that he could after he had been caught.
5) Communications
Like the rest of the Star Army, Keiran was subject to several classes regarding the use of SA communication equipment. Though he takes to this knowledge with less enthusiasm than he does his other tasks, he is capable none the less.
6) Mathematics
Keiran has taught himself many of the higher maths- largely to support his other studies, though a few he took an interest in out of curiousity. For this reason he has an unusual understanding of many complex weapon systems and the concepts behind them, enough to give the military headaches- which is part of what got him into the army in the first place.
7) Medical and Science
A skilled hand and a trained eye are the final tools he brings to the table. He can take each nerve and carefully attach the devices necessary to make his masterpieces work at peak performance for the user. He can perform simple surgeries thanks to a brief time of army training, and has been called into a surgery room on more than one occasion as an aid. It only interests him in conjunction with cybernetics, but he's a quick enough study to add more to his medical knowledge if the situation required it.

I could possibly give up the arts skill, as that's mostly just flavor for his backstory- but it might detract from the character.

The character should really be developed through RP. You have a very large history, but I don't know what to suggest. It's not a really big deal, it gives your character direction, but it's too long for me. Usually a history that large makes a character out to be too special, but you don't need to worry about it. Some of the events should have been RPed out (really, anything after childhood) and not just made up, but I don't know how exactly to get around that without suggesting that you delete some of it, which isn't necessary. The only other "problem" is that he's an orphan, though it's not really a problem, it's just sort of overdone. I do like the technology obsession though. I may sound negative, but you did do a good job, and it's obvious you put some work into it. Nice work.

So, is this character joining the Star Army?

I think that's where he would be best suited. Most of his background is largely superfluous early on. It's more there to show how somehow who is starting as introverted as he is can have his skills. Also, I think the somewhat darker past(instead of he just beat things up a lot, etc) will make him a little mroe interesting-but he isn't the kind of person to whine about it. I'm open to changes where necessary, my main goal was to make a primary non-combat useful enough to merit casual play and interaction. He has plenty of room to expand, even in his chosen field-much of the military technology he'll come across is something he'll have to learn. Civilian stuff he's more than capable with, but I imagine the void is enough to give him a bit of a challenge.

Ultimately, I just took a small idea(former slave with a passion for technology) and ended up running with it a lot more than I had planned. Happens sometimes, heheh. I can shrink it if you'd like- but having it there won't keep me from revealing bits or developing more on what he has already in the story, and he has plenty of personality room to grow.

No, it's fine. Character (second posted, the earlier one will be deleted) approved.

What's the decision regarding him having a NH-12? And, for my hopefully last question- where would you like me to hop in at?

It's too expensive to have one for a starting character, and it essentially give you two characters. I'd prefer you not have one, though I would be willing to allow it if good reasons were presented to me.

If he's in the Star Army, his bio should say so and he should put in a request for orders.

Aye aye. I'll look into the 12 thing later on. It'd be be fun to play it out anywho'. I'll see if I can make my way towards the order request, as well as the bio update.
