RP: 4th Fleet (NSN) [Mission 5.51] The Watchful Minutemen

Henry and Aleksei were covered by six shield drones to create a small webwork that resembled a flexible wall. Each shield was as a triangle, linking together like a lattice of polygons to protect the soldiers. It was a non-standard configuration that Henry had coded in himself. Maximum flexible coverage without having to spend all of the drones.

His HUD gave him alerts as he was firing at Rippers in the air. 'Pvt. Raikowski - Armour Condition Critical' appeared on his HUD followed by a list of the problems his armour was experiencing.

Being the squad's leader, it was his responsibility to know these sorts of goings on with the condition of his team, and as the engineer, it was his job to fix things. Unfortunately, the overlapping professions meant that he could never excel in both.

He could, however, cover his troop with the remaining drones he had. "Open fire!" He commanded to Aleksei as he took a step back and eyed Zyv. He started laying down covering fire towards the Ripper that had its sights on Zyv and sending shield drones towards him.

Henry was in the open as he tried to act as a tether towards , and unshielded by drones, only having his VOID's shields and his movement. This would've been over a lot sooner if Henry had a Push/Pull device, but the VOID did not have one nor the capability for it. "Raikowski, this way! Quick!"

The longer Henry and Zyv were out in the open, the worse it would be if nobody else covered their escape. At least, the plan was to get Raikowski to Aleksei and Henry's original position so Henry could repair Zyv's armour to get his shields working again.

Max eyed the Ripper that was flying towards him. The big hulking machine was bearing down on him and his rifle rounds didn't seem to have much effect except to draw the attention of one of the other Rippers. This was the time Max wished he had a bigger gun.

"Ugh, Swayer, I think we pissed it off" Max said sarcastically while he fired his rockets at the Ripper coming towards it. They needed a plan if we're going to take this thing down.

"Swayer, I'm open to ideas!" Max said as he fired his rifle at the Ripper, strafing to the side in hopes to finding some sort of cover and preventing the Ripper from running him over like it did to Zyv.

Zyv swore before promising himself to never do anything that makes him stand out again, assuming the Ripper wouldn’t save him the trouble of avoiding that by splattering his intestines across the planetoid.

Still he still had his right leg launcher and its load of 40 darts as well his LPA and it seemed he had not been forgotten by marines and was ordered to move while receiving covering fire, nice.

Sending confirmation of his orders Rakowski tried to time his retreat with the arrival of the shield drones he shot two rounds of five darts at the Ripper while boosting his way towards Henry or, if the booster failed him, resorting to good old fashioned running.

Fenix

"It has been one hour, forty-four minutes since the commencement of this ground operation. This unit has recorded twelve minutes of continuous combat. Incoming enemy unit, 30 meters ahead. This unit suggests immediate action." The helpful AI voice was not the most welcome thing at this time but because of Alexei's mental question, it automatically responded.

Its warning alerted the young Marine to a damaged, stationary Spiky, aiming its particle rifle at him.

----------------------

The Ripper crunching towards Max had a 50mm cannon on its left shoulder. Suddenly, it stopped and swiveled the cannon at him. Max saw the round exit the cannon before he heard it. He even felt it smash into his chestplate, disintegrating the durandium plating. The kinetic force had knocked him onto his back, his AI was helpfully pointing out which of his ribs were broken and where he was bleeding from and what it was doing to help him.

None of that, however, changed the fact that he was now especially vulnerable to the Ripper, which now loomed above him with his forearm blades drawn and ready for use.

----------------------

Henry's maneuver, beautifully executed and timed, saved Zyv from further punishment. After a hairy run, the pair made it to the relative safety of the squad. But when they had thought that they were relatively in the clear, a message popped up saying that Max Carter was down and hurt. The injuries and damage weren't life-threatening, except for the Ripper standing right above him.

His position was on the far left end of the squad, near Sawyer, who was engaged in fending off an infantry squad of thralls supported by two Spikys.

The squad's advance had ground to a halt and all momentum was lost.

In the distance, however, the other squads were still fighting a running battle to draw the remaining NMX forces towards them. But the surviving Mishhu commanders were a predatory breed. They sensed which squad was the wounded beast and closed upon it like hungry wolves. The Minutemen were their focus, not the seemingly unstoppable Hammers nor the agile Avengers nor the close knit Irregulars. All of them were taking hits and casualties but all of them were still moving.

-------------------------

"Corporal Morris, Captain Ironside wants to know if you require groundside assistance. Dauntless has returned to orbit after engaging follow-up NMX warships," the Drei AI from NSS Dauntless interjected verbally into Henry's helmet.

Hearing the Aggressor's AI chime in with an answer to his rhetoric question he couldn't help himself. "No fucking shit! I thought I would let the bastard shoot me." retorted the marine as he targeted the damaged Spiky, turning his AMP and plasma chainguns on it as they continued to spin, just waiting for the squeeze of the trigger.

Squeezing the trigger of his AMP while he opened up with the shoulder mounted weapons, Aleksei targeted center mass, attempting to gut the Spiky with sheer volume of fire.

Zyv sighed with relief once relatively safe, now a brief pause while the corporal would check his armour for some quick maintenance before going back into the fray.

Or not.

With his AI reporting Max had been wounded and a visual confirmation not only confirmed the fact but also showed the man to be in a predicament and Zyv sighed again.

- ‘Thanks for the save corporal but it looks you need to do it again. What do you want me to do?’

The squad had lost momentum. They'd become too thick to fight now that the squad had stopped. Henry's gut sank as he knew that staying turtled down would not benefit his squad in the long run, despite the current condition of some of the troops like Zyv.

"Captain Ironside, clear us a path. We need to get the hell out and regroup." Henry watched Max get wailed on by the Ripper, and he responded by raising his forearm grenade launcher and firing four high explosive grenades in quick succession before gunning it down with his LPA.

His squad was scattered, what few of his troops he had were injured, and a person dead was a person who couldn't fight. Unlike the other squads, his was just newly minted out of necessity, and he faced ridicule from superiors and squads senior. If they gave him shit for being in this situation, he was going to break a few noses if he survived.

"Regroup and prepare to withdraw where the bombs come down!" Henry yelled over the radio. Desperation had crept into his voice. He couldn't afford losses like the other squads and he couldn't take any chances. His rational mind had fallen to the back seat as panic invaded his mind.

"Leave the fucking tanks behind, they're all fucking dead!"

NSS Dauntless

The 4th AASP Fleet's flagship had only just returned to its station in orbit.

Ten minutes ago, they had moved to support 3rd Assault Fleet Marines as they broke past another layer entrenched NMX defenses. The planet had been heavily fortified by the Squids. They knew that if the SMDIoN or SAoY were going to launch a southward invasion, this planet lay directly in their path.

So the NSS Dauntless was used as one of many orbit to surface artillery platforms. The ship's main guns were good at burning NMX emplacements. And since there'd been so many Marines interspersed through the NMX positions, Dauntless and her sister ships had dropped orbit to get better target acquisitions.

That, however, had opened them to the threat of surface to orbit weaponry. While Blackjack-class cruisers were normally able to defend themselves from such weapons, Dauntless was already damaged. For long moments, the flagship's sensors fed information to CIC but that same information was not relayed to the automated CIWS. Grand Admiral Dominic Valken had watched, pale-faced, as a 250mm depleted uranium kinetic round smashed into his flagship.

The round did not penetrate past his ship's shields but it exploded violently against them. That secondary explosion collapsed the shields so that a follow-up could destroy the entire forward prow. One second, the main guns had been working. The next, they had been vaporized along with a dozen of Dauntless' crew.

Admiral Valken had been thrown to the deck and knocked unconscious. That left Captain Valencia Ironside as the ranking officer. She had immediately ordered medics to the bridge to tend to the Admiral while she ordered all of the Fleet's warships to break for high orbit.

She had then ordered Dauntless and her escorts back to their original position, orbiting over their own Marines.

"A reminder to our boys, they now have an hour of sunlight left before night hits."

A night on Mwigflukbajik was as long as its day. A full three hours.

"And inform Corporal Morris that I am sending some assistance to him."

-------------------------------------

"Orbital drop incoming. Orbital drop incoming." Every Marine fighting around the ridge who had access to a Savtech heard the annoying warning.

They could see the white streaks as a dozen drop pods blazed through orbit towards them. It couldn't be more Marines. It definitely wasn't armed sailors. Which meant that it was one of the handier toys left behind by Valken's predecessor. J2 Combat Robots. Expendable (and relatively expensive) robots that were only good for a few minutes of sustained heavy combat before they were destroyed.

But all the Minutemen needed were a few minutes as well as a really good prayer.

Fortunately, they also had a few other resources which were more reliable than religious supplication. Thomas Hardman and his "brothers" were known as Hammers for a very good reason. They could hit really hard.

Butch, strongest and toughest, the meanest, most aggressive bastard who was also the most loyal bro that any man could want. He led the charge, holding his Kegbuster underarm and firing the plasma lances as well as his plasma turrets. At one point, he got so close to a Ripper and simply punched its face as he passed it by. The Ripper simply collapsed with a hole where it head had been. Butch's Aggressor was painted in a deep dark green with black tiger stripes.

Behind him, to his left, was Ben Linzer. Boomer to his bros. Outside of combat, he was the nicest if not the brightest man around. In the heat of battle, he was a speed demon and his dark blue Aggressor, lined with lightning bolts, could turn into a blur. Boomer had modified his Aggressor countless times to make it go faster than what the NAM reps said it could do. Such were the wonders of Nepleslian engineering.

Then there was Thomas Hardman himself. The Brick. Mostly because he was so damn stubborn. His old CO had once told in (during one of the many disciplinary hearings) that Hardman had the brain of an officer and the self control of a fire-and-forget anti-matter warhead. Which was why Hardman remained a sergeant. And like his bros, he wore a color which made him stand out. Blood red with even darker patches for contrast.

They were the unstoppable trio. They were Hardman's Hammers, even if they had to put with a trio of wretched girls now in their squad. And it was now time to remind the Squids why one doesn't ignore a trio of Hammers with blood on their minds.

--------------------------

The NMX had mustered their remaining power armors against the entrapped Minutemen, forcing them into a smaller and smaller perimeter.

Sawyer's shields failed. And then he took a particle beam to the gut. It burned right through the Aggressor's armor into his gut. His right lung had been punctured and four ribs had been vaporized, leaving a fist sized hole in his guts. That same particle beam had cauterized his wounds. But without medical help, his time was short.

--------------------------

The Ripper towering over Max roared in bestial triumph as it suddenly exploded. Henry's grenades had exploded almost simultaneously, destroying the NMX armor.

But just as one threat was neutralized, a pair of Spikys appeared before Henry. Undamaged and armed with more powerful aether rifles, they were clearly of a different class and a greater threat than the ordinary Spiky.

And just as sudden as they had appeared, they disappeared. One exploded as a rocket smashed into its back, detonating the whole armor. The other seemed to have simply been pummeled into the ground by a single punch from an Aggressor.

"Corporal Morris, time we were leaving!" Sergeant Hardman bellowed loudly, striding up in his Aggressor, stepping on the pummeled Spiky.

------------------------

A hundred different smoking holes appeared in the Spiky before it crumpled to the ground in front of Aleksei. And then a Neko leapt at him, clutching an explosive satchel. It detonated itself in Aleksei's face, taking out his armor's shields and tossing him backwards.

Lisa was tired and over-flown with adrenalin. She still stood on the tank, her armour scorched from all the personal firearms fire that hit her. Her shields were recharging, her drones were recharging. She fired all her grenades, quite a few magazines for her HPAR and her hip mounted miniguns were cooling down. Before her was a massacre. Thralls and nekoes exploded, shot and squashed from all she got. She did it though, tankers were safe.

She turned to the tankers and smiled under her helmet. "Coast is clear for now, you guys better retreat!" She said and formed a wall shield from a half-recharged drones. "Use this guys to move back, I am programming them to follow you and keep themselves between you and any incoming fire."

With that she turned around and watched the Minutemen. It was a mess, there was scorched earth all around and tons of destroyed enemies. Minutemen with they small number managed to bring down a lots and lots of enemy soldiers. Lisa was very proud.

"Corporal, Lisa here. I am on the ridge covering your fall-back. Tankers are safe for now. Over." She reported to Henry.

Max groaned as he touched the hole in his now disintegrated chestplate. His chest wound was painful and his computers voice was annoying. His annoyance was tempered as he felt the suits medical suite kicking in, giving him some relief from the pain.

Despite this relief, Max was still dazed from the hit. He wasn't sure what to do but everything seemed to go in slow motion as he struggled to get up. As he did, he eyed the massive Ripper standing above him, blades drawn. The alert from his computer now shifted from damage to a hostile armor. Max struggled to get his rifle up to defend himself, but before he could, he was blinded by explosions from above.

He wasn't sure who had just fired on the Ripper, but after a second of looking around, he could see Corporal Morris aiming his weapons at the now downed Ripper. "Thanks for the save Cpl" groaned Carter as he got back to his feet. As he recovered he watched the light show around him as explosions ripped through the the remaining NMX forces around them.

"Hardman is a fucking badass" thought Carter as te fired a few shots to cover his withdrawal as he moved closer to regroup with the rest of the squad.

There was a lot going on and Zyv filtered it so as to concentrate on what was most important and at the moment Sawyer having a chunk of his body vaporized was the most important thing.

- ‘Sawyers down. I would appreciate some covering fire.’

Even as he reported that he was moving to the downed marine, dragged him to some sort of cover and proceeded to work on saving the wounded marine.

Henry watched the swathe of destruction carved by Hardman and the wing of gunships that'd given Henry and his men an escape route. The explosions clouded Henry's vision, and the nearby explosion from the suicide bomber that Aleksei was unfortunate enough to come face to face with

"Roger that Sgt. Hardman. I'll regroup and make tracks." Henry radioed to the brick-like sergeant before switching to the Minutemen's channel. "Everyone, grab whoever's injured and start moving, start flying as soon as you can through this path!" Henry ordered as the bombed path was highlighted on their HUDs.

"I'll grab Max, Zyv, we don't have time to work much - grab Sawyer and run. Lisa, regroup with the rest of us and grab Aleksei. The tankers can cover us. Go go go, we have no time to waste!" With that, Henry grabbed Max under one arm and helped him with a rolling start to his boosting, leading the way for the other members of his unit.

As the Minutemen moved out, the Hammers covered them. The pair of tankers, protected by Lisa, followed them. Without the benefit of thrusters, they were slower meaning that Lisa took more hits to her shield drones and armor.

To further aid the maneuver, Corporal Motoyama and his squad came darting in at high speed. They were led by three highly customized Raiders in colors similar to Hardman's own trio. But while Hardman and his bros epitomized the raw, naked aggression the NSMC embraced, these Raiders, as well as Motoyama's, moved with an elegance and grace that one expected from a Nepleslian armor. The trio of pink, green and blue Raiders glided through air, dancing past their opponents and without a single misstep. They had no handheld weapons and yet their opposition was dying as the Raiders flew past them. It was like they had choreographed the entire fight and turned it into one massive, explosive ballet.

Which, even Butch had to admit, sounded pretty cool. If there were explosions, he tended to be interested. As the Raiders advanced past Hardman and the Minutemen, Henry saw that the reason why the leading trio of Raiders were somehow killing without weapons. They were using the wrist-mounted blasters built into the Raiders. He hadn't seen it because they twisting and turning their whole bodies, using the momentum from their arms to aid their movements. And the speed they were doing it in made it difficult to spot the quick precision shots they were making.

If Hardman's boys were a rockband blasting their hearts out, this was a ballet accompanied by a full orchestra (and explosions).

Then the Minutemen were clear. Battered but unbroken. And now it was the Raiders' turn to extricate themselves.

The M10 Raider was considered a light armor by Nepleslian standards but it was still more heavily armored than any known Yamataian equivalent. Yet, that still meant that it was not designed to take heavy hits. Its saving grace was speed, not heavy armor and shielding. That meant as the Raiders' formation pivoted to retreat, they were most vulnerable to the fading, though defiant, NMX fire. One Raider, whose shields had already been weakened, took an aether beam to the back which killed the pilot outright.

Unlike Nepleslians or other species serving in the DIoN, the NH-22 bodies used by the Jiyuuians rejected cerebral chips and Yamatai was clearly not sharing its Soul Transfer technology. That meant that any death was permanent.

But now that the Minutemen had been extracted, Hardman and his boys shot right back into the melee to cover the retreating Raiders. The M9 Aggressor, however, was the perfect example of heavy armor, heavy guns and heavy thrust. When used by three of the stubbornest ID-SOLs in Nepleslia to cover their comrades-in-arms, the Aggressors could soak up damage without batting an eye.

And to support them, a line of a dozen J2 combat robots advanced in line abreast. Each one fired missiles, gatling guns and lasers indiscriminately at anything that didn't approve of Daddy Nepleslia and his awesome rock bands. Drowned out in the explosions were the triumphant laughs of Butch as he stood his ground behind the Raiders, emptying his Kegbuster's rockets at point-blank range before spraying plasma lances.

For long moments, the battle wasn't so much a battle as one giant cacophony of explosions as the fragile J2s unloaded their heavy ordinance into the NMX. And then, just as it had started so violently, silence fell.

The NMX armors had all been obliterated in the short hellfury unleashed by Hardman, his squad and the J2s. All that remained were NMX infantry who were leaderless. It was now a matter of sorting the fanatics from the ones who didn't want to die a premature death.

Almost fittingly, an excited voice broadcast in the clear on everyone's radio.

"Checkmate! Checkmate! I say again, fucking Checkmate!"

That was the codeword for the final capitulation of organized NMX resistance at their main fortresses. The 3rd Fleet Marines had conquered the NMX bases and secured the planet.
