Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Yuzuki

Eiko tilted her head at the question and licked her lips thoughtfully.

"I don't know," she said, finally. "I want to serve my ship and my sisters to the best of my ability. If I do a good job, I feel good."

Another long pause. Eiko looked with uncertainty at Rin, then returned her attention to Yuzuki.

"Is that a dream? Maybe?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yuzuki frowned into her helmet, running her fingers over the visor. She had cracked it once, and although the little spiderwebs had been repaired and resealed, she could still feel the slight dent.

Slowly, she said, "No. Well, yes, but..." She opened her mouth, then shut it again. The soft click of her teeth was audible.

Looking up at the displays again, Yuzuki loosely hugged the helmet to her stomach. It was difficult to form her thoughts into words, and for a moment her lips moved around unformed whispers. In the end, though, she did not say anything else, no matter how desperately she wished to.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Eiko, who clearly saw the distress her answer caused Yuzuki, spoke up quickly.

"Maybe I don't know, but," Eiko searched for the answer. "I trust the Juni. What he said must be true. I don't know why but it just feels right to believe it, you know? When we finish the mission, we can learn more about dreams from him, so no problem!"

She smiled at Yuzuki, trying to cheer her up, all the while glancing at Rin and hoping she would back her up.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"A dream is something you want to see accomplished, is it not?" Rin added in. "They can be short-term, or long term, like I'm sure most people here have a dream of getting through this. I believe what the Juni was saying was that since we only really know what's inside Miharu, our dreams can't reach very far beyond that. So a dream to help out where we can while we're here is very reasonable. But, this is why the Juni wants us to see the universe: so that we can get bigger dreams beyond what is immediately around us."

Rin nodded, hoping that that would help things.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yuzuki shifted her weight from one foot to the other, moving smoothly. She couldn't keep her ears from drooping slightly, but she did manage to at least feign interest in the screens she was watching. The prognosis she had given the bridge as to the plant's status had been dire, but for some reason unbeknownst to her, Yuzuki got a good vibe from the way the equipment was running under stress. Things could be much worse, and they wouldn't change immediately, so watching the numbers was just pretense.

And what she thought...

She sighed again, casting her eyes around for another distraction. Yuzuki ended up scratching her scalp.

It was inevitable, anyway.

"I've given it a lot of thought," she started, "Sometimes, I wish that I hadn't. It's... tearing my chest apart, from the inside. I can't get rid of the pain. What I want-" And here she pushed a a handful of hair back in frustration, "I don't know if I'll ever have. It's just a dream, after all - but it makes everything else seem worthless. No matter how hard I try, I can not get that worthless feeling to go away. I wish I could."

"I gotta' try," she said quietly, "After we pull out of this, I don't know what's going to happen, or if anything will, but... this dream is all I have left now and it's the only thing I want so..."

When she turned her head to the other sprites, she seemed remarkably calm. Her helmet wasn't bouncing off of the far walls, and her eyes were dry. It was almost a first. Always before, she had raged instead of considered, or cried instead of talked. Now she just rubbed her neck, flushing faintly.

"It hurts when you abandon it, and you don't know if you can get it, but you really, really want to try. That's a real dream."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nyton nodded to Yukari. "Roger that Shosa." he replied before opening up comm to Tom and Ichigo. "Let's go! It's a hot insertion point so guns up!" he said before heading towards the starboard bay according to Yukari's instructions. Throwing the bazooka across his back he got the LASR up and ready.

Nyton brought up a window to Tom and Ichigo displaying Miharu's position and approach along with the intended launch point at the Hoshi's auxiliary starboard bay attached to Miharu. That data along with any available feeds they could get over AIES regarding the area they were entering was also being fed to all three of them. There was more incoming data from the Armor team already inside being received. Anything to get an edge on the situation was being processed in readiness along with the actions of hostiles. One item of interest to Nyton had been the hit and run tactics of Mani and Meni. It was a fight he looked forward to.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Heavy Armor behind and heavy armor in front, this seemed to be the death trap mission that had been explained to Masako (if her first death ever hadn't indicated before). Three Mishhumachina seemed to turn to attack her team and wipe them out. Luckily, she had some quick subordinates as Kai, Asher, and Kyou pressed the attack upon the machine right next to them. "To the Hanger, now!" she ordered as she decided to take the lead this time around. After all, now wasn't the time to hang back and order others around. Sometimes it was best to urge soldiers on by fighting in the front.

Bringing her Plasma Rifle around, the young Warrant Officer targeted the visual sensors of the machine about to block the entrance to the hanger and let loose a stream of plasma fire upon them. Hopefully that would throw off its aim or at least by time for the rest of her team to get into the hanger.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yukari brought Miharu to a stop relatively close to the Gate's Hangar, where Masako and the others were headed.

"Armor team deploy," she said, the bay door opening up for the armors to fly out.

She was not too focused on the armors. Nyton, Tom and Ichigo were all capable fighters; she had little reason to be frightened for them.

Yuzuki had not told her something Miharu neglected to state. She put it in a different way, and was not a computer, so her words pushed her to think differently about it.

Yuzuki's words suggested she knew Yukari would not ask the question if she had any choice, which she did not. She would have to pray to her goddesses and hope Miharu could survive without too much damage.

"Thank you, Yuzuki-san."

* * *

Ichigo didn't say anything. He was right — any commentary she could add wouldn't change that fact.

She only had one set of countermeasure missiles, on her left lower leg. She had taped three extra armor-piercing magazines to her right leg.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"...Ah..." Rin replied rather quietly. The way that Yuzuki made it sound made Rin almost worried about having a dream. It just seemed as if it would cause more worry and pain than it could do good, as she could observe from her sister.

She put a finger to her lip, thinking for a moment. "If that's a dream, then wha-" she stopped herself and quickly shook her head. "Nevermind." If it was something this important and Yuzuki didn't share of her own accord, then it most definitely was not Rin's place to ask.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

This is it! Nyton thought as the doors opened to let them out. With his LASR pointed in front of him and the plasma emitters charged and ready to react the man was ready to respond with deadly force. Telemachus primed the Argus Millitech PBD-7 Barrier Shield and T-4Z Damper Field Generator to boost their output towards the fore and slightly around the flanks of the armor. He wondered if one or both of Eve's little twin pets would attempt to strike them from behind which was why he left himself supposedly 'open' on his rear. Telemachus was already aware of the possible attack from behind. The plasma emitters on the feet of the PHALANX were set to lash out in response to any rear attacks, covering him and his wingmen should the need arise. Nyton felt as though he were indeed in the ancient military formation that the Armor had been named after.

The space between Miharu and the Gate was open and clear. AIES warned Nyton of the situation on the ground and that they were not only going in hot but on the heels of an intended assault. Kotori was still flying in her Ryuusei while Mara was also orbiting nearby in her shuttle.

"Freeman, Ichigo, form on my flanks and begin approach. We're swinging a little wide to stay out of sight of the enemy in the hangar but do not enter until after the Taisa has completed her attack on the hangar to wipe out the enemy presence." Nyton ordered as he quickly but cautiously disembarked from the ship.

Code:
Taisa, we are beginning our approach. We will enter once you have completed your attack run on the enemy.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Acknowledged."

Following Nyton's orders with exact accuracy, Tom took position at Nyton's left flank, LASR in hand, scanning the area for enemies and covering the Taii's blind spots. He forced himself to breath carefully and fully, combating the tension that pressed at his mind.

-----

Eiko nodded carefully after hearing the input of her sisters about dreams. She looked with uncertainty between the two... they had touched on some topic of great importance, at least to the Heisho, but it was something that the young Eiko couldn't wrap her mind around.

She was confused, and it showed on her face, which scrunched into a wince. But when Rin spoke, halting a question mid-sentence, the young sprite leapt to fill in the gaps, her curiousity getting the best of her.

"What's your dream, Yuzuki-san?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Ichigo formed up on Nyton's right flank, hefting her LASR up in tow hands and floating along with them into the space between Miharu and the Gate.

Behind them, Miharu turned around and shot toward Takumi.

* * *

Yukari did the math herself about where to position Miharu in front of the Takumi to keep it just at the edge of an interdiction field. She was pushing the ship along at 9,000 c to meet the enemy vessel; she wanted to be sure the four units the ship had were in as unstressed a condition as possible before she had to shove them along.

She had her hand grasping the glowing blue volumetric flight stick in her right hand. Be ready for anything, she thought to herself.

"Heisho, please manage the shields for me. I must focus myself on piloting and handling damage control."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yuzuki did not say anything for a few moments.

Then, she said, "Rin, take the starboard assembly. Eiko, take the port. Report back to me when you are on station. We are going to start feeding the engines small amounts of coolant in order to prepare them for the push."

Putting her head forward so that her hair, short as it was, would not catch in the edge of the airtight seal, Yuzuki replaced her helmet and locked it into place with a slight turn. For a single breath, there was no air, but the next inhale triggered the suit and she was soon breathing easily again.

But no amount of oxygen was going to slow her heart, or take away the blush running rampant around her face and neck.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Deep within the Miharu, Nao was mostly cut off from the happenings outside the ship, her point of view simply limited to her task assigned and what may as well have been the voice of god for the moment. She had allowed the CFS units to reduce output and cool during the time allotted, and when done, relaxed and prepared to message Tom.

However, due to her isolation, Nao was not fully aware of the life support cutting out on the ship. She found it getting harder to breathe, the air thinner. The sprite choked out in spite and fury. "W-what the hell?!" Her hands frantically grasped the helmet as fire ravaged her lungs. The seal fumbled for a moment, sending her into panic before locking into place. Cool relief rushed through her as a breath off life filled her lungs.

As Nao rested in her seat in confusion. 'What the hell? Something's up. Again...Why me? Why us?! Why are we sprites always put into dark little corners of the ship and almost always not knowing about the big stuff and explosions?!'

As she mentally grumbled to herself, she sent out that damned message.

Code:
Freeman-Juni, I've cooled down the CFS units by reducing output for the designated time as per orders. They are now back up to operational capacity, and I await further orders.

-Nao

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Doshii Jun said:
"Heisho, please manage the shields for me. I must focus myself on piloting and handling damage control."

Miyoko nodded in response to the order and transferred control of the systems over to herself. "I have them. Any requests?" In the meantime, she continued her survey of the Takumi for weaknesses.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Rin practically cringed when Eiko went ahead and asked that burning question. Then, as Yuzuki rather just shooed them off to go work, she couldn't tell how exactly she had responded. Was it anger? Or something else? There was no time to really ponder. "Hai."

The lavender-haired sprite quickly scurried off to her assigned post, replacing her own helmet as she did so. Just a bit longer and she was there. "Ready," she sent telepathically.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Yes, ma'am," Eiko said, and she turned quickly and ran towards her assigned area.

-----

@Nao

Miharu chimed in once Nao sent the message to Tom.

"Freeman-Juni is on assignment to assist the armor team. I have rerouted your message to Yuzuki-Heisho, your immediate supervisor."

-----

@Yuzuki

"You have a request for orders from Nao, Heisho," Miharu said.

Code:
Freeman-Juni, I've cooled down the CFS units by reducing output for the designated time as per orders. They are now back up to operational capacity, and I await further orders.

-Nao

"Shields to the fore," Yukari quietly said. Her voice was low, and her eyes were focused on the screen in front of them. "Prepare one subspace torpedo and our last anti-matter torpedo. You might as well shoot for me, as well."

Yukari adjusted her pigtails to be in front of her shoulders. She shifted in her seat. Her fingers jittered along the keys below her left hand. "We will have several hundred light seconds between us and the Takumi. If everything we know about it is true, it will have no weapons capable of reaching us that I cannot avoid. Nonetheless ... something sits inside my stomach like a sickness. This cannot be so simple as the plan suggests.

"What are we missing?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@Outside Amaya's Gate:

Kotori's Ryusei II fighter-bomber hovered by the Gate, a distance away from the breached hangar, with Mara's Fox shuttle in its shadow.

"Claymere, Freeman, Ichigo," Kotori transmitted. "Stand by. Do not enter the hangar until I finish my attack run."

* * *

@Inside Amaya's Gate:

The retreating shapes of Daisy power armors became retreating shadows as the Mishhumachina over them discharged its deadly ventral weapon, belching out plasma just under where they had been - they fortunately escaped unscathed from that particular attack, but the plasma destroyed Kai's mini-missiles before they got to their target.

As the Black Knights continued retreating, firing back, the Mishhumachina slowly started to follow. Kyou's combined Plasma attack didn't do much more than fizzle harmlessly over the Mishhumachina's energy barrier and her grenade only briefly covered the forcefield with a sheet of flames. The good point was that they softened the barrier enough for Asher to see his first gauss shell collapse it, and the second ram itself into the machine's left ocular cluster, coaxing it to recoil from both the impact and the ensuing explosion.

Asher's missile volley preceded Masako's rush toward the Mishhumachina guarding the hangar's entryway, which fortunately busied that enemy mecha with shooting the missiles out of the air instead of shooting at them. Masako's own plasma shots didn't fare much better than Kyou's on the target behind them, but with the tentacles busy... it looked like they might just be able to jet through and under it with thier fusion packs (before it's flame thrower could catch them, anyhow).

Like blazing fireflies, Masako, Kai, Asher and Kyou jetted into the hangar room. To their right the shattered doors of the hangar bay, which led out into space... and safety from the upcoming attack run from the Taisa's fighter-bomber.

* * *

@In the corridor the Black Knights just left...

Without the fusion pack that helped the rest of her team escape and get clear of the Mishhumachina's ventral plasma weapon, Nimura was forced to shy back from the attack. Her attempt to sneak through the Mishhuvurthyar's tentacles was spoiled by Kyou's incendiary grenade which briefly filled the corridor with flames Nimura didn't dare go through lets it break her thermoptic camouflage. Asher's connecting gauss shell added to her bad luck, actually knocking down the mishhumachina back right into her.

Her power armor was tossed several meters back like a limp ragdoll - the high speed of the knockback spoiling her thermoptic camouflage enough for the third, more distant mishhumachina that had been further behind to manage to get a bearing on her.

With Nimura struggling to get up and with no cover to hide into, her barrier quickly collapsed and gatling cannon's spray ripped across her torso armor, again knocking her down before the mishhumachina got close enough to seize the hapless sprite limbs with its pincer-tipped tentacles... before the servomotors of the tentacles began straining in an effort to quarter the M6 Daisy now in its grasp.

@Miharu's subdeck:

Yuzuki's task wouldn't be an easy one. In theory, each of Miharu's Conbined Field System units were everybit as good as Plumeria-class when it launched... so for the hardware, even 21 000c was theoretically feasible.

The problem was how the CFS had been designed to all act in unison to support the regenerative shields, a conformal spatial distorsion that would allow the vessel easy passage within nebulas, and also the adjustments done to them to help them function at near-peak efficiency inside the Blue Rift Expanse.

She didn't have time to find a way to make all four units function at 18 500c - it would take too long to do it smoothly. She could, however, perhaps have each and every one of them work independently and quickly adapt the fixes the Daughters of Eve had meant to eventually use for their Sakura gunships. Isolating each meant losing the shields... on the bright side, the energized armor could perhaps make up for it.

Perhaps they could even use Hoshi's less demanding shield systems to give enough vestigial shielding to block teleportation attempts.

She'd need more power. Fortunately, cutting the regenerative shields out would provide just that. Though the way she'd need to reroute it, that meant losing capacitor recharge and disarming the main gun.

As expected, heat would be a problem. The units, because they usually acted in unison, never generated the same kind of heat the single unit on Plumeria-class gunships had; those had much better heatsinks. On Miharu, most of the heatsinks had been built around the capacitors and the main gun junction. Yuzuki figured she could request that the MEGAMI alternate use between the four CFS units in the hope that alternating them would moderate the heat buildup...

But even then, she estimated that it could take from two to five minutes for any individual CFS unit to overheat to the point of breaking down. Flushing coolant was still an alternative... but it was unfortunately not one she could do at the last minute - any abrupt temperature change in the Combined Field System could still end up wrecking the delicate machinery inside when the envelope was being pushed like that.

Finally, assuming that this all worked... all those measures effectively disabled much of Miharu's combat capabilities. Once the Shosa was done racing ahead of the Takumi, it would likely take between 30 to 60 seconds to restore Miharu back into fighting shape.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

'Alright. Rin, Eiko,' she sent telepathically, 'Adjust the emergency coolant gates at your station to ten percent, and hold them there until my mark.'

Then, Yuzuki turned back to the real problem on her hands.

Juggling the shields had been one of her major concerns, back when she had posessed the time to give an update, or a refit, much thought. Theoretically speaking, the engines themselves were sound, but the system holding them together was like a harness on a team of horses; it held them back from their full potential, so they could work together as a team.

All of the percentages and RPM's were holding steady, keeping pace - normal operation.

If she let loose of the reins...

Lifting her hands, Yuzuki triggered the nanomachines in the air, and created several windows in a rough oval around herself. The four CFS units appeared there, along with output statistics, levels, and temperature readings. The main screens changed slightly, allowing her to take control of those specifics windows from the smaller nanomachine-created ones.

'Nao,' Yuzuki sent, 'Please listen very carefully. You are in a position to change the maximum load thresholds on the CFS units.'

'Open the pilot solonoids up completely. All of them. We are going to have to run the CFS units asyncronously and the pilots prevent them from outpacing each other. I need them gone. Please be quick, and then find some place safe, it is about to get very hot.'

And that would put it all right there. No limit; the only way to control the things would be to throttle their fuel governers.

One of the windows was the power distributor panel. Pulling it over into her line of vision with a mild twist of her wrist, Yuzuki glanced it over.

Code:
Shosa. In order to achieve the power output you require, we are going to have to drop the shields temporarily. We will not be able to maintain their shape and consistancy. Our main gun will be offline at this time as well.

The Hoshi's shielding is weak, but it's better than nothing. Just tell me what you want me to do. I have full manual control of the plant, and I'll try to give you as much as possible.

Standing by.
