Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

As the fluid suspending Kai's new body lowered, his feet touched the bottom of the HS tube, and his semi-conscious form tried to support itself, but without much input, it merely slumped forward, forehead thudding dully against the front of the tank, which, thankfully, snapped the Yamataian to wakefulness. The blond looked around, not remembering being in a vat of goo. in fact, just a second ago he had been talking to Yuzuki and had just sat down for an-

"Shit" Kai muttered, one hand pushing him off from the tank's front, the other grabbing his face and smearing some of the residual HS fluid out of his eyes. As if to make sure, he felt his hair- He knew he had been going for a haircut after the ST backup, but here, his hair was long. Had they skipped it? maybe he was just hit in the head and needed some healing, and was suffering temporary memory-loss. The chaotic nature of the med bay seemed to support this idea, but, he looked to his side and noticed Kurohoshi-juni, likewise waking up in a tank.

Shaking his head and groaning, Kai rapped gently on the side of the tank, as if asking for it to be opened. he looked around for someone with a towel, rather conscious that the only thing keeping everyone outside from seeing how much of a man Kai was was a distressingly thin retaining clamp on the outside of the tank. the hand from his face went down to try and protect the man's modesty-an odd thought considering, and he awaited help from people outside.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Nao occasionally winced in pain. And maybe whimpered; she'd never admit that to herself of course. From her position, she could hear bits of flesh and charred remains being pulled off, separating from her still warm flesh. The forceps dug in again, and Nao found herself biting her lip, just short of breaking the skin. "It's fine Ayumu-chan, I'm a big girl." she half teased, wincing again as another part of her was removed.

"Besides, I don't have the right to complain since I still got every other part of me intact." Nao spoke, eying Kai out of the corner of an eye. "Now, he's got the right to complain. It had to be really something to put him out of it." She snickered at the only thing censoring the man. So small. Nao then turned her attention to a pile of armor and flesh sitting on the floor.

'I really want to clean that up. Really bad.'

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Fortunately for Miyoko, it was a straight shot down the corridor to the medlab... though it was only a few dozen meters, it still felt like forever to the rattled Yamataian. While she kept her pistol readied, proceeding a little cautiously through the ship, no bogeymen jumped out to get her, and she reached her destination safely.

... not that she was particularly able to relax. The invasion and resulting fight had taken its toll on the area around the medbay, and Miyoko paused when the scraps of power armor and destroyed drones came into sight, raising her pistol shakily and looking at the area intently for any signs of opposition. When no invaders stepped forward to attack her for several moments, she finally dared to make her way forward and enter the medlab--and even then, she did so at a bit of a hurried job, anxious to get into the relative safety.

Things weren't much more pleasant in the medlab, with the sizzling corpses still on the floor and sprites tending busily to the wounded. Seeing Sanjuro, Miyoko approached him. "Suzuka-Shosa has asked me to help in here. Where do you need me?" The pettier parts of her mind wanted to flaunt the fact that she now technically outranked Sanjuro for the moment, but there was no time for that. She needed to get to work tending to the wounded as quickly as possible.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

To Miyoko the doctor seemed a bit out out of sorts. Sanjuro just looked at her with a glassy look to his eyes. She did not have long to observe this before she was pulled away by Ayumu, the head nurse. The nurse was wearing blood splattered surgical gloves and smock which showed she had until just recently been in the middle of surgery.

"Ah Saito-Heisho, I apologize for being abrupt but could you please assist me with surgery?" The blue haired nurse released Miyoko's shoulder and bowed slightly. Returning to business Ayumu showed the progress she had made on Nao's back. There was still a large chunk of AMES suit fused to the skin along with a multitude of smaller ones. "Her life is not in danger outside of our circumstances but I need help finishing the removal of foreign objects from her body to allow healing to progress faster. Currently we have two other casualties here who have suffered severe burns with concussions which are being treated. The two personnel who were recently revived should be getting released soon. I was hoping to send out our other nurse Azuki with Akiko to assist with triage and delivering casualties to medical." With a slight note of urgency she then realized that the IV bag of hemosynthetic fluid for Nao was low. "Miko I need another bag of hemosynth, immediately."

Meanwhile Azuki was beginning to open the hemosynthetic chamber up to allow Kai to step out. There was no uniform ready for him yet but a robe was waiting for use. "Nakamura-Heisho, are you feeling well? Any disorientation or dizziness?" she asked him while the door began to open.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@YSS Miharu:

"Right!" Hinoto acknowledged Yukari.

Mara, though, quickly countered with "Hold on!" the next moment, when Takumi used a graviton projector to again snag Miharu in its grasp before starting to drag the ship out from under the pylon's shadow to be exposed to the raker domes.

"I see it!" Hinoto returned and used one of her graviton projectors back on the Takumi to force them into a deadlock before the ship could be tugged into the allowable firing arc of Takumi's weaponry, no matter how much the other ship maneuvered.

That done, she opened up with one of the turreted particle beams, slagging the offending graviton projector itself before she then telepathically said: "Purging port dorsal and port ventral magnetic-containment anti-matter storage."

What served as 'ammunition' for the disabled port turrets were both expelled into space, and Hinoto was prompt to grab one of them to then conveniently chuck it at the starboard exhaust port of Takumi's ion sublight engine. Counting on the momentum to guide her first projectile to its target, she then used the same graviton beam to catch the second anti-matter container and also throw it - this time calculated for faster momentum so that both projectiles would hit their targets simultaneously - at the central ion engine.

The explosions that resulted did not disappoint. The containers did not survive contact with the exhaust port of the ion engines and burst into destructive explosions that were almost as potent as the AS-7 Anti-matter warhead. Both of the intended targets were savaged beyond repair.

Unfortunately, with Miharu being under five kilometers, those explosions also proved harmful to the smaller experimental vessels. The shockwave sent the vessel reeling in a dizzying spin as Yukari lost control, which was accompagnied shortly afterwards by what felt to Yukari like part of the ship being brutally wrenched open...

The explosion had taken the atmospheric retention field keeping together the breached port crew compartment failed. That caused the entire section to suffer explosive decompression, entirely blowing open to space.

"The Taisa!" Hinoto realized in horror. The proximity of the anti-matter explosion might have harmed Kotori!

"Still here, just a little shaken," Kotori's prompt telepathic voice quickly dispelled that fear. "I'm glad Amaya splurged on the shields of these Akumas."

* * *

@Miharu, Subdeck:

The explosive decompression was like a giant hammer striking Miharu, and Tom was too close of it for comfort.

He wasn't sure how exactly it had happened, but he had been shoved and thrown down to the floor. It took effort to force breath into his lung, and armored gauntlets were tugging at his arm, trying to get him back up. His helmet's Heads-Up-Display showed the passageway they were in being filled with gaseous mist.

Behind him was a scene of ruin: the corridor leading to the breached wing pod compartment was now littered with broken support girders, sparking power cables and the ruptured ends of twisted plumbing. Underneath those was the inert form of Junko's Daisy, leaking fluids like a broken eggshell.

Oh, he vaguely remembered now. Something had happened. It felt like the ship had a seizure and Junko had yelled something, shoving hard into his back. Hard enough to get him clear before the section crunched to a collapse, the ship's broken bones scything through her power armor as if it was made of flypaper.

"Juni! Juni! Freeman-Juni, get up!" Ichigo yelled at him.

* * *

@Miharu, Hoshi's port landing bay:

Nyton was actually just under the section that explosively decompressed. fortunately for him, Hoshi's hull armor was between him and the doomed crew compartment, keeping him relatively safe in comparison to Tom.

That didn't stop him from being surprised, losing his footing and smacking himself dizzy into one of the mechanized loading arms before falling back on the bay's tiled floor.

As Nyton - head ringing - was blinking away stars, he saw the still-helmetless Nimura bending over him, looking at him with what he imagined was a 'why aren't you getting up already?' look.

Then again, that look could also be 'why didn't you use antigrav to control your tumble?' because the sprite looked quite unscathed. Or maybe she was just trying to determine if he needed to be dragged to the medlab for treatment; it was always hard to tell with her.

* * *

@Miharu, medlab:

The people arrayed around the medlab were still in a structurally sound section of the ship... but that didn't stop the detonating anti-matter and the following explosive decompression from letting them experience the novelty of being inside a giant saltshaker.

* * *

@Kyou:

Kyou appeared in a vast rounded chamber, with its center crowned with what looked like a massive mechanized pivot point for the raker beam dome she had teleported in.

Maintenance catwalks ran around the miniature weapon complex, providing access to power cabling, monitoring consoles. Cold misty air wafted downward from ventilation systems which were attached to the assembly of heatsinks and coolant lines positioned over the ceiling, under the inner-workings of the inner-pivot points of the raker beam emitters were.

Dozens of nekovalkyrja technicians were scurrying around, all too aware of the invasion of a hostile power armor, with resounding cries of "Imperial invaders!" echoing as Kyou took her bearings. Before they could do much in Kyou's regard, a tremendous impact shook the ship. The techs were clearly rattled by it, some slamming themselves painfully against the guardrails. A power converter exploded in a shower of sparks which electrocuted another sprite, instantly roasting her flesh before she fell down on the catwalk - quite dead.

* * *

@Asher:

The scene that met Asher was altogether not too different from Kyou's, though he had actually teleported under the other raker dome.

What was different was that the shockwave of his arrival seemed to knock to the floor a duo of nekovalkyrja nurses whom had been holding a stretcher under which they were bearing another severely burned nekovalkyrja. There were another ten or so neko techs around whom also noted his arrival with the usual epithets.

The shattering boom of the anti-matter explosions outside the ship shook up the techs and the nurses. The badly-burned neko was tossed around and cried out, clearly in a lot of pain. One of the nurses froze up in fear and was just giving him the terrified doe look. The other nurse went to actually crawl over to her patient and protected the burnt neko's body with her own.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Kai graciously took the robe and put it on, somewhat unhappy that he didn't have something to clean up with, and that there was no change of clothes. When Azuki asked him how he was, the Yamataian shook his head. "No, no diziness. Just.. how long has it been since. since I was knocked out?" It would be obvious to the nurse that Kai either didn't realize or didn't want to believe that he had been revived.

"And what is that pile of metal and goo on the floor?" he added, eyes noticing the results of a failed teleportation attempt. he probably didn't need to know, but he was curious. Perhaps it was the beat up remains of his or Masako's PA that had been taken off when they were brought to the med center. Because that's what obviously happened, right?

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Well, I guess we have two separate objectives then. Kyou shrugged that off, and got moving, not bothering to waste anything more then the offhand swipe from the unpowered blade if one of the technicians got in the way. After all, they weren't her objective, the control frame was. However, anything she saw which looked like it might be a control board for anything would receive a powered swipe in it's turn, the theory being that the more controls she wrecked the harder it would be to fix the damage she was doing. "Asher, I've made contact. No resistance yet, just a bunch of technicians. You?"

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

His head ringing, Tom absently followed the advice of the person yelling at him, whoever that was at the moment...

...oh yeah, that was Ichigo, right? And that leak... they had taken care of that leak just then and then...

"Junko!"

Tom saw the wreckage and Junko's still form through the mist. He jerked in Ichigo's arms, reaching out to try and grab the inert sprite's hand, pitifully straining against Ichigo's Daisy, as a child would trying to reach a discarded toy on the floor.

But Ichigo held firm, and Tom's straining gave way to a silent, anguished stare at his broken savior before he finally surrendered, leaning into Ichigo for support.

"Let's... get moving..." he choked out. "We need to seal this area and prevent further decompression..."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

For a moment, Asher stared at the Nekos in front of him, gathering what seemed to be a very killable group. Yet, the violent shaking of the Takumi forced a reminder that there was work to do. So, he restrained his murderous intentions into a malicious laugh that echoed from the external speakers on his armor. He gave a small, yet unfriendly burst of flame from his fusion cutter.

"When I'm done breakin' y'shit? I'm coming back f'all of you." Asher laughed, pointing blade and fore-arm torch at them. He looked around noting consoles and coolant pipes, though, specifically noting the emitters.

"Asher, I've made contact. No resistance yet, just a bunch of technicians. You?"

"I'm seein' what looks like two docta's, a wounded Neko, and some some techs." Asher reported, advancing over to the raker beam emitters and using his fusion cutter to melt through the object. With a range of about five meters, he was able to reach the coolant valves and heat sinks above, and then whatever controlling consoles that catched his fancy. "I might kill'm if we get tha' time." The message almost seemed to ring a certain rhythm, as if he was working to a tune.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Yes, certainly. If we can--" Miyoko was cut off as the Miharu was blasted by the antimatter explosion, making the ship shake violently around her. The Yamataian was slammed forcefully into a... wall? Ceiling? Floor? There was barely a difference between the three in these circumstances. After a few blows, she managed to activate her gravity manipulation to brace herself, but the beating she'd already taken by that point was enough.

For somebody who hadn't even been shot at a single time, she was in pretty poor shape. Her entire body was tender, and there were a few particularly sore spots on her chest that she just had to hope weren't cracked ribs. "Right," she said to Ayumu in the aftermath of the shaking, as she pushed herself up from the floor wearily and held her battered side in pain. "We should probably secure the patients if possible. Another shot like that could make somebody fall from the operating table." Still intent on helping with the surgery, Miyoko grabbed a pair of surgical gloves and started pulling them on.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yukari felt like her side had been torn open. She snapped an arm back and grasped her waist, jaw locked open but no sound passing her lips as she tried to double over. Focusing on anything but her internal organs spilling into her chair was impossible. She was afraid to look. It screamed in her mind all the more because she felt like she had no blood left to bleed.

Anger came with the feeling, or at least a sense of it — like being next to a person who had a very bad day and wasn't hiding it.

The sensation vanished, replaced by cooling sensations and a brief emotion resembling euphoria. It was false euphoria; a survivor's high that kept a soul from cracking under pressure. Her eyes could focus again. Her mind was rebriefed on the situation at hand. Her hand went back to the control panel.

The Shosa took control of Miharu again and forced it to go back under Takumi, awkwardly angling the nose at where she saw the long black mark Miyoko had left with her jostled attack on the enemy early in the fight. They were still within 5,000 meters.

"Hinoto-san, if we have any main gun power, use it on the weakened ventral armor. Mara-san, use Hoshi's CFS to give us a measure of shielding. Inform me if our main CFS units cool down."

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

The previous trembling was nothing compared to the latest one which sent Nyton reeling. It reminded him of the siege of Roger Wilco when Red and Green forces began shooting it out just outside the perimeter of the non-engagement zone. Buildings as far as the other side of the city proper felt the shockwave from artillery.

Nyton recovered as quickly as possible but not before Nimura was already hovering above and looking down at him. Ignoring her unreadable expression the Nepleslian shook away the last of the stars and stood up. Thanks for just staring and doing nothing. he thought with a bit of acid towards the silent sprite. Discreetly he set Telemachus to monitor the battle outside a little more closely and kick in gravimetric propulsion a little more quickly next time. "That last shock didn't mess up the Armor did it?" he asked while checking it over real quick. AIES had begun feeding him data regarding the surroundings of Asher and Kyou. Not wanting to distract them he sent a brief message to both of them.

Code:
Show no mercy and take advantage of this moment of surprise! Destroy as much as possible!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The medlab shook violently causing all the nurses and their patients to fall over. Azuki fell over before she could give Kai a towel, instead crashing into him. Shizuka and Chisako fell off of their tables before Akiko and Miko could stop them. Ayumu was closest to Nao and barely held onto her while using her own gravity manipulation to keep them steady. Sanjuro was not so fortunate as he fell back and struck his head, knocking him unconscious. Once the violent convulsion of the ship was over Ayumu immediately looked over the lab.

"We should probably secure the patients if possible. Another shot like that could make somebody fall from the operating table."

"Good idea, Heisho. Is everyone alright?" Ayumu asked before seeing Sanjuro on the floor. "Heisho can you check on the doctor please?" she quickly asked while steadying Nao and securing her to the examination table.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

As Ayumu held Nao down, she kept silent and tried to think pleasant things. It was better than worrying about everyone all the time. What was it like to live in an earthquake prone area? Was it like this? Better? Worse? Was Junko fine? Nao shook that thought from her head. 'Must not worry, must not worry, must not worry. Think relaxing things, or else I'll go crazy sitting here! Useless, useless, useless!' She tried pinching her cheek to snap herself out of it, but the pain killers that Ayumu gave he were very good at their job, as to be expected of Star Army medicine.

When Nao heard Miyoko's suggestion, she quickly made her own. "I don't think you need to worry that much; I won't be going anywhere soon Ayumu-chan." She was uncomfortable with the idea of restraints.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

@YSS Miharu:

Swooping down under Takumi's port pylon like an avenging falcon, Miharu made a devastating flyby past the the large fin-like protuberance under the enemy cruiser that now housed its many fusion reactors.

Three argent bolts spat from under Miharu's nose bored gaping craters into the Takumi's armor, and were then followed by a full broadside volley from the four remaining turreted particle cannons.

Bolts of man-made lightning punched through the armor torn open by the main gun and their crackling energy discharge caused several of the fusion reactors close-by to spontaneously meltdown. Miharu raced away as a chain reaction had multiple explosions erupt over the stricken area, spewing out atmosphere, copious amounts of liquid (from the look of the greenish tinge: coolant), and large pieces of debris (some nearly as big as Miharu herself).

A large rift had been carved out of the command cruiser's underside. Only a skeletal remnant of the ventral fin-like protuberance remained.

The damage caused Takumi to lean to one side as the explosions had it reel to starboard; it's single ion engine and maneuvering thrusters insufficient to maintain control. There was an attempt from Takumi, despite the heavy damage visited to it, to seize Miharu in a graviton beam, but Hoshi's weakened shielding, extended around the entire ship, was able to foil the attempt.

"C'mon! Decompress!" Mara wished aloud.

"She won't," Hinoto flatly declared in turn. "She has the compartmentalisation to survive this."

@Miharu, subdeck:

Ichigo and Tom staggered into main engineering. The sprites Yuzuki was commanding were busy mending ruptured conduits, monitoring the good function of the central CFS unit and so forth. Tom couldn't help but notice the aura of heat surrounding some of the more important ship components, the wavering images indicative of how hot they were running.

Ichigo approached one of the monitoring station and said: "Hoshi's CFS is fine - she's out of reserve coolant, but her cooling system itself is isolated from ours, and still undamaged."

Tom's Heisho turned her helmet to look at him and then said: "Juni, we'll need at least a minute for the fore and starboard CFS units to even begin to cooldown, and if the Shosa decides she needs to push them for one more jump, we'll probably lose them. I don't see us coming with any miraculous juryrigging job while fighting either."

She tapped over an hovering volumetric window to have it show Miharu's armor damage diagram and continued: "It's... It'd be a long shot, but maybe if we could expose the hemosynthetic conduits and coolant lines running between our two armor layers, maybe we could speed up the cooling process."

What Ichigo was suggesting was very controversial considering they were in a pitched firefight in which they were already soaking a lot of damage: entirely ejecting the outer section of Miharu's 150cm double-layered hull would make their armor protection much thinner and effectively destroy the energized armor grid... so to expose the coolant lines to space, where they would hopefully be able to bleed out a lot more heat.

On the other hand, Miharu's sister ship Asamoya sported armor much thinner than Miharu, and that in turn had allowed it to pack smaller and less energy demanding sublight engines thanks to the ship's lowered mass. If Miharu would shed its outer layer, perhaps the lost mass would increase Miharu's speed and maneuverability, effectively compensating for having lost one of its two gravimetric drives.

@Kyou:

Technicians fired their handguns at Kyou, but these left only ineffectual ripples over Kyou's barrier as she swung her aether-lit sword around the consoles, reducing them to mounds of sparking metal rubble, with smoke billowing out from where they had been sundered through.

The lighting dimmed to a pulsing red as the chamber echoed with honking alarms. The techs, helpless to stop her rampage, started evacuating.

The ship's structure made a loud rumble has Takumi seemed struck by an explosion that shook up the ship even more badly than the previous one.

@Asher:

Blaring alarms rewarded Asher's effort as he cut across coolant lines, spilling around viscous green liquid. He torched through one of the four bases of the aether weapons and was rewarded with crackling arcs of electricity as the device shorted out..

Nearby, some of the radiator fins began to glow cherry red, and it wasn't just thanks to the dimmed red lighting of the room.

Asher was being shot from behind by NSP fire, but the attacks could barely count as annoyances seeing how his energy barrier didn't even allow the impacts to cause any recoil on him.

Then, all hell broke loose (again) as the ship shook itself like a leaf - apparently Miharu had hit it much harder than just a few seconds ago.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

"Well well!" Asher laughed, realizing the damage his shield was taking. He turned, heaving up the shield in his left hand. "I'm shore' glad you all decided t'stay!" He activated the bladed in his right hand. "'Cause I been' want'n t'do this for a long time." The Malifarian sailed forward towards the nearest Neko. He was fully intending to bring the blade down her, and then the next, and the next, until he received new orders, or finished his wholesale slaughter.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

It would be nice to assume that these alarms are due to me but... As the ship shook from the latest series of hits from the Miharu, Kyou was careful to keep her balance. I think I need something a bit more... drastic. That in mind, she boosted up to the pivot point for the raker array, slashing any cooling lines or screens she could reach along the way. If I can just find a good spot, breaking this should be fairly unfixable, at least in combat. Assuming she found a suitable spot, she would either cut her way through using the lit aether, or stab the lit blade in if the section was to broad to cut through.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Tom analyzed the Miharu's diagram and the amount of damage she had sustained. The collapse of an entire wingpod, the loss of an engine and the fold drive, and the heat: most of these problems were beyond the capabilities of the technician crew to repair.

The energized armor was obliterated. Miharu's outer hull had taken such a beating that the entire grid was inoperable. No amount of work from the remaining YARD drones could hope to get the outer hull to even a fraction of its original strength.

The outer hull had served its purpose. With the ship under the threat of decompression, any more hits they took would render any of that extra protection useless.

In essence, the outer hull was as much a liability, weighing down the ship, as a strength.

Engineering could not contribute anything to Miharu's structural improvement (it was all damage control at this point) but there was still a bit of hope in providing improved mobility, less strain on the engines and faster cooling.

It was a gamble... Miharu was probably in a dangerous position, and he had no means of knowing how the flow of the battle was going from his position. If it was going poorly, Yukari would need to jump to safety... and that would be the end of them because the drives would either slag or explode... or the Takumi would simply run them down as they drifted helplessly in space.

That made his decision clear.

"Eject the outer hull! I'll inform the bridge! Make sure we don't make any more openings for decompression during this procedure!"

A volumetric window popped up near the bridge crew.

Our engines are near collapsing. The outer hull is being ejected to help improve mobility and speed up cooling. I'm uploading a timer to estimate the earliest moment when a jump can be achieved.

Get the Taisa to safety!

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Rin was thrown around like everyone else with the worrisome shuddering that Miharu went through. A major problem with this is that she was surrounded by lots of hot metal pipes and a very very hot running machine. As a result of this, there were some noticeable burned patches on her suit even from brief grazes against the burning surfaces, and she would've had it worse if it were not for her liberal use of gravity manipulation.

Getting her bearings back, and after giving some rather nervous glances at her suit, Rin returned to the CFS unit to do some work of which there was little of. She had little ability from where she was, at least at the moment, for her to do much of anything.

"Please hold together..." she muttered to herself as she also wondered where else she could be helping.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Unlike Kai, Masako seemed to be coming too a bit more slowly. As the tank drained, Masako's body would slowly lean against the tank and slide down until she was laying curled in a fetal position. Again, the young Neko seemed to make a connection back to her origins, but the sudden jolt of the ship sent her bouncing around in her tube. Startled and awake, the young Neko sat up and held her head with a grimace. It was probably good she had been in the tank, or she would have been bouncing around like a ball.

Shaking her head, Kurohoshi Masako looked up to see the carnage of the medical bay. Grimacing harder, the Warrant Officer slowly stood up and tapped the tank to notify those outside that she was fully conscious now. Unlike the last time she had awoken, Masako didn't seem as--intense. In fact, she seemed down right embarrassed as a pinkish tint colored her cheeks. "So...I died..." Masako muttered as she continued to hold the back of her head with her left hand.

Re: Mission 5: Amaya's Gate

Yuzuki, who had been kneeling beside a conduit, finally stood up. For a moment, she simply examined Ichigo and Tom with an expression that was tired and beaten, dozens of shameful and desperate thoughts filtering through her mind. Her technical expertise had been next to useless in the face of so much damage. In the end, she had been forced to watch and listen as the ship was hammered by enemy fire, being made to realize that none of her effort in central had been worth all that much once combat had been joined.

It would have been so much more simple, if she hadn't been in this position - if she could have just listened to somebody else making decisions, and just worked with the equipment, it would have been better. Technicians didn't have to make decisions - they just had to know their job, and all was right with the world.

But when the order was given to jettison the outer hull, she clenched.

"Not over the engine!" Yuzuki blurted, her voice through the AMES's microphone almost lost in an electronic crackle. "If we allow the gravimetric engines to cool that quickly, the metal could warp, and the lines would crack - or worse, we could have severe mechanical damage from the metal cooling so quickly. Keep the engines insulated - just jettison the hull near their cooling lines."

Here Yuzuki shot an arm out toward the damage control grid, leveling her finger. The grid was now covered with red and blinking portions, alarms ominously fortelling the imminet doom of so many secondary systems it wasn't worth counting them. Around the gravimetric engine, it showed a massive buildup of heat, but Yuzuki was indicating several of the hotter lines going to and from the assembly. She turned back to Tom, her expression rigid through the transparent AMES visor.

"We can't afford to blow out the hull over that engine. If it goes, we are dead in space. Blow the hull over these, completely, and expose them, instead of the engine directly. That will prevent any cracking."
