Approved Character Morishia Oharu

Now I've got to not only reply to your e-mail, but your character! It'll be an honor to review her.

... But the wife's calling right now. I'm on it tomorrow.

Okay, cool. I'm a little worried that the character is seriously flawed and just wouldn't work. Any suggestions would be welcome.

OK ... let's see what we guut.

1. Not busty enough. I demand C-cups at least.

2. Not slutty enough. Cloche hat? Slender fingers? SHIFTY EYES? Where's the T&A, the DSL, the RHRN? And the measurements? She's TINY. Wes might like that, but I wholly disapprove.

This character FAILS IT. Come back when she's ready for Yamatai, which puts the H in hentai (and hos).

... OK, so I'm kidding.

1. The Arabs and the Persians, while similar, aren't quite the same. What is it you're striking at here? Angular face? Do you have a reference?

2. THIEF! I like her. That she's attracted to the shinies is awesome and sad.

3. Why does she want to constantly show her value to the team? Is that to cover for her thievery?

4. Skills:

a. "Rogue" borders here on being overpowered, as she's not been roleplayed, so how could we possibly know she's good enough to slip by people? She sounds like a smooth talker, but there's no mention of being that in her history or personality. In fact, she's "shy and quiet." Is that a front? If so, what are her true motivations (besides stealing).

Overall: A very strong idea, which I would expect anyway. But I feel like there's a lot that's not in the profile. How does she feel about stealing? Clearly she's been told it's wrong, but somehow that information hasn't affected her reasoning. Does she have any friends, or is she just buttering everyone up just in case she has to use them? It sounds like she always makes sure no one knows too much about her ... are her superiors just as clueless as the enlisted around her?

There's potential depth to this character we don't see. Not a bad thing, but my eyebrows are raised with questions and some excitement.

This character is pending. The submitter must address the list of edits above and bump the thread when they are done.

Thanks Wes. :)

In response to Jake's comments:

Yes, the rogue skill could be toned down. The bigger problem is that I started with an introverted hacker/lock-picker kind of thief, then decided that she can't get past the security on a Yamataian warship that way, and then decided to change course into a con-man (err, con-girl?) kind of character.

Now I'm changing my mind again because I don't think I can pull it off. :( I believe I will make her a Yamataian instead, maybe from some impoverished backwater planet somewhere? This way I get to keep my original lock-picker idea. She'd be a terrible thief aboard a Yamataian warship, but she'd have a fair chance aboard a ship without a MEGAMI system or equivalent AI guardian.

As for her morality system, Oharu simply doesn't understand that stealing is wrong. The concept is so alien to her mind that she can't comprehend it. Every time she gets punished for stealing, she doesn't think "so stealing is wrong", but instead thinks "ooh so I'm not supposed take other people's exotic underwear without asking first, my bad", in the same way that we get mildly embarrassed because we broke some obscure unspoken rule among our peers, and get somewhat irritated that no one told us about it.

From Oharu's point of view, she's just breaking a lot of these unspoken rules, without seeing the underlying principle of personal property. She also gets the sense that she's not too popular, which she attributes to her constant rule-breaking. So she compensates by trying to work extra hard, and bribing people with baked goods.

All of which makes more sense with a Yamataian character. Hmm. I must ponder this more...

As for the Arabian/Persian reference, if you insist on being politically correct about it, I'll go with Persian and provide a photo reference:

Why would it make more sense with a Yamataian character? I think it fits perfectly with a Nekovalkyrja. After all, they are born knowing everything they need to know, but knowledge doesn't necessarily imply understanding. Furthermore, Nekovalkyrja are less psychologically stable, thus prone to more odd 'quirks'. Overall I particularly enjoy reading about her 'quirk'. As for whether or not she is successful in hacking/lockpicking, it's fun no?

I want to give her a few opportunities in her pre-RP bio to practice her lock-picking skills though, and there are not many low-security locks to pick for a young Neko, not without making her history too "special".

I guess what I'm looking for is a simple history that plausibly gives a Neko/Yamataian character the roguish skills that a Nepleslian might have.

Any ideas?

Her age is low enough that she could have been born a Neko, and during her formative months picked up a few unusual skills. Just a thought.

It is also plausible that she was initially used on a less secure ship, such as a freighter or something. If she had a problem stealing there, then she could have been transferred somewhere with more security.

Well.....not every lock is super good in the YSE. Civlian locks are relatively simple I'd imagine, locks on footlockers, etc. There are some opportunities, but I don't really know what you had in mind. Of course, with those opportunities come a high risk of being caught, which could be rather fun for development (or history), but I dun really know what you have in mind.

It's good to be back.

I'm still busy at work though. I'll try to contact the GMs over the weekend and see which plot ships I'm interested in.
