New animals

These are the first two I came up with, and are designed to live on Yamatai. Their names are tacky because of what the colonists where reminded of.

Megaluirrel:

This creature is in appearance much like a large squirrel, albeit with a few differences. One of these is that its body is as large as a medium sized dog, it has six legs (the additional legs serving an inportant purpose in aiding the scurying and climbing ability of the megaluirrel, and also meaning that it can hold on with for legs while it uses its front paws to grasp fruit, nuts etc.), and each one has a rather strange foot, with gecko-like pads. Much like a squirrel it has a large bushy tail, the same basic shape, and much of the same nervous behaviour patterns. It is a vegetarian, lurking in the forests mainly, and eating the fruit of some of the largest trees, and also eating the trees themselves, usually the smaller or dead ones. It does this by spitting out a stream of specialised enzymes and acid to dissolve and weakening the wood, before using its specialised tongue to partially suck up the resulting mush, and partially shovel.

The Megaluirrel is not a creature to be taken lightly, its spit can burn through flesh as easily as it does through wood, and it has sharp teeth, sharper claws (which are serrated) and senses sharper even than that. A cornered Megaluirrel can main, or even kill, many a would-be-killer, scurrying up the trees using its agility, and climbing ability to usually easily escape into the canopy.

It is not easy to tell between a male or a female Megaluirrel, until the female has given birth, at which point she will be accompanied everywhere by her litter (2-4 cubs), as she goes hunting for food, regurgitating it to the younglings until they are able to gather food themselves. The father is an active, but distant, parent, as it defends its mate from afar, attacking any creature that enters its territory with unusual ferocity. This lasts 5 months, after which the mother runs away very fast and leaves the cubs, now self sufficient, by themselves. The father similarly sneaks off. Through most of their lives Megaluirrel lives alone.

However the rewards for capture are quite high, due to the reclusive nature of the creature. The skin of a Megaluirrel is extremely soft, and keeps the wearer wonderfully warm. It is thus, a popular material for extremely expensive ladies clothes, for those people who wish to show that they can rise above fabricated garments. The fur colour and decorations change greatly from Megaluirrel to Megaluirrel, from a deep red, to grey, to black, to the rather rarer green (it was very popular at one point and almost hunted to extinction).

Other than that, and the other various parts of the body that can be sold simply for being part of a Megaluirrel (the body stuffed for example, or the teeth and claws on a thread) the flesh of the Megaluirrel is a delicacy, and features in some of the more expensive recipes. The taste is meant to be like that of stake, but with a far greater sophistication in flavour, and said by some to be the most exquisite steak meat, above all other animals. The more cynical say that it should be for the prices that are paid for it, and at times can be used as an example of the divide between the lower and higher echelons of society. It is served in a vast array of forms.

Bovinor:

On the planet of Yamatai, the niche filled by cows on earth is filled by the animals that the colonists decided to called ‘Bovinors', stemming from the term Bovine. They where harvested in much the same way, although the resemblance to them is actually not all the much.

The typical Bovinor is three metres tall, and twice that long, heavily built, stocky, and with a long thick coat, which not only protects it from the elements, but effectively deadens blows. Sticking through the fur are long bony spikes, protruding from the back at regular intervals, and at the joints, as well as a series of especially long ones (normally 4-5 foot) horns on the head, which can be used in defence, as well as the mating fights which occur yearly. Rather than the four legs of the cow, the Bovinor has 8, which do not aid it greatly in terms of speed, but do in the amount of force it is capable of conveying and dragging, something that aids it in the seasonal pushing competitions. It is a rather strange custom of the Bovinor that the males not only fight each other for females, but also push large heavy object to show how strong they are, and the extra legs aid them in this. They also serve the purpose of allowing the Bovinor to have a more efficient surface area on the ground without having huge legs, which is especially a boon for those in the north on the ice fields. Bovinor are very strong, and can be used to pull great weights, but despite this are actually relatively gentle grazers, animals that gather in huge herds of many hundreds of individuals, eating grass and low leaves. To eat it uses a long powerful tongue to wrap around the plant, ripping it out of the ground, or of its branch, and devouring it with a set of horrifying looking teeth, which serve to liquidise the food in the mouth. The Bovinor have very sensitive central legs, which allow them to sense vibrations in the ground, a useful ability for sensing predators. And also by stamping with the central legs they can create vibrations in the ground that can communicate over great distances. For shorter range communication they use there extremely loud voices, which sound like that of a grasshopper amplified several hundred times, combined with a blender (the gnashing of teeth). The sound of a herd communicating is a strange, wonderful, and deafening experience.

Bovinors are mainly kept for their meat, for they grow fast, and have a lot of high quality meat on them, which actually tastes like a strange (yet delicious) combination between beef and lamb. They can (and did before the arrival of the colonists), live almost anywhere on land, from the cold North to the temperate fields, and even the forests, each herd (they don't move climate), having its own technique for survival. Bovinors are capable of eating for themselves from their day of birth, and thus need nothing but protection from their mother (the father has very little to do with them). Males are actually smaller than the females, but not by much, and have longer horns, and a more violent temperament. That being said Bovinor's are extremely passive animals unless attacked, or in the mating season.

Please read what I posted when this kind of thing was suggested. Largish creatures with more than 4 legs have been weeded out over hundreds of millions of years. This is for a reason. Multiple legs require much more energy and resources to grow and then to move. They do not provide greater speed or agility, and would in fact likely hamper such things, since they could easily get in the way of each other. Further the primary muscles for the legs (for most creatures) are in the body (specifically in the hip and shoulders in Bovinae) and 8 legs would cause serious problems for where these muscles would be located and where they could anchor.

Muscle strength is a function of muscle cross section and has nothing to do with the number of legs. The same goes for traction which, along with the strength of the creature, determines the creatures overall pulling/pushing ability. Therefore it would be significantly more advantageous to have large, heavily muscled shoulders/hips and upper thighs along with large feet than to have more than 4 legs.

Megalurrel:

See above about the legs. Extra legs are not necessary, thousands of creatures around the world get along just fine by using just 2 legs or a tail to hold onto a branch will manipulating things with there forearms, why does this creature need to use 4? On the feet, I don't know if setae (what the little hairs on a gecko's feet are called) would work on such a large and heavy creature. On the same lines as many other items with many other creatures, this trait has not continued to the present day on any large creatures (the largest geckos still being quite small and light).

Why would it act perpetually nervous? That sort of behavior is the mark of a prey animal (and generally a small one at that). Larger animals (even prey ones) usually do not display such behavior. Further, squirrels (which this creature is obviously based off) are omnivorous, and such a large specimen would probably accentuate the carnivorous aspect of this, since a hugely larger range of animals would be viable prey.

Plant matter and animal tissue have different make-ups in the extracellular matrix (the connective tissue). In plants it is primarily made up of cellulose, where animals use a variety of proteins. This means greatly different enzymes would be required to break down plant matter and animal tissue. Also keep in mind that strong acids could cause the same kind of damage on the spitting creature as it would the creature that was hit.

Bovnior:

Beyond the above comments about the legs, where did these bone spikes develop from? Why did they develop? Beyond the horn (which is used in combat between males), what use are the other ones? The creatures that would likely prey on this creature would be able to easily avoid a few scattered spines, and any large number would probably cause unacceptable stresses on the creature's skin and skeleton.

Why does it have teeth described as "horrifying lookingâ€

Examples please.

Neccesary - no. However that is how it evolved, sure creatures get around just fine using 2 legs or a tail, but then again, whose to say that some point in its evolutionary cycle it did? The Megaluirrel has never evolved the ability to grip with its tail, but did evolve extra legs. It may not be the most efficient way of doing it, but it is what happaned.

On the same lines as many other items with many other creatures, this trait has not continued to the present day on any large creatures

Again, just because something hasn't happaned, it doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

Why would it act perpetually nervous? That sort of behavior is the mark of a prey animal (and generally a small one at that). Larger animals (even prey ones) usually do not display such behavior.

Again, just because creatures in the real world suffer this trend, doesn't mean this creature has to. It is 'nervous' and by that I mean it is always on edge, usually jumpy and twitching, because it has found that that helps it survive. I haven't created any carnivours yet, but I will. And they most likely will be the sort that would hunt a Megaluirrel, and the Megaluirrel would best be scared of.

Firstly, don't assume that plants in this other world are made of cellulose, they probably are, but making assumptions is dangerous. Now a pretty factor of evolution does come into play. The ancestor of the Megaluirel did not have the enzymes to break apart animal flesh, however gradualy those that did, through random evolution, found that it was usefull for their survival, and thus now have it. The reason strong acids don't burn the mouth is due to highly acid resistant flesh in the mouth and the gland that carries the acid, combined with a high healing rate, and an alkaline film covering it.

The spikes on the back evolved to stop a favourite predator trend of jumping on the Bovinor's back, and biting its neck. They also serve and secondary sexual purpose, since the size and presense of spikes is a sign of maturity, strength, and a good diet. They can also be used as a defensive weapon.

The teeth serve an important purpose when they are in areas with tough fauna. In this the Bovinor can chew, at a fast rate, through the branch with its teeth, and then eat the branch my liquidising it. This can be usefull with the stunted trees of the north as well.

As a final point I just had an image of two limbed creatures having a debate over how having another two limbs would be a waste of energy.

You'd have thought so wouldn't you? But that's not the case due to the peculiarites of Bovinors reproductive systems where the female lays an series of unfertilised eggs, and her chosen mate (she will fiercly attack any other male who attempts), will spray his sperm over them, in order to fertilise them, at which point the pair will guard the egs, untill they are born, when the father leaves, and no longer displays any intrest in them. They don't actually have to make physical contact.

I am trying to find a direct quote for you (I no longer have the book I read it from) on that, but it should be something you can reach by just thinking about it. More legs mean more resources need to be used, since extra bone has to be deposited over and above what is needed to support the weight, as the leg muscles must anchor to it. It also means more muscle mass, since more is needed to move the extra leg. This results in a large increase in used resources for no appreciable gain.

Further, in the 4.5 billion year history of life on this planet I am sure 6 legs has been tried on large creatures, it just was not advantageous and was selected out of future generations. In general this is a good way to go, seeing as nature has had billions of years to try out new designs.

---

But why? Those extra legs take significant extra resources and could cause anatomical structural problems as to where they would be anchored and where they would operate. Over millions of years of evolution why would a creature keep such a feature if it could loose the extra too legs and still be able to grip onto branches and the like just as well?

---

You describe the Megaluirrel as possessing numerous, sharp teeth, flesh dissolving spit, and as being very fast. These are all hallmarks of a predator, not a herbivore. Sharp teeth are of no use on a herbivore as they can not aid in the grinding of plant matter. This indicates your creature (despite what you say) is either a carnivore or, more likely, a omnivore. This creature is probably something like a bear in terms of what it will eat, which is just about anything. Nervousness is something that you would expect from a small prey animal. Larger ones have less to fear and have there ears and eyes raised much higher from the ground so they need not twitch around to see its surrounding like a small creature. It is even less likely a large omnivore would exhibit such behavior, since a great number of creatures would be prey to it, not the other way around. Alertness and nervousness are two different things, it need only be alert.

---

We are still operating in a carbon based ecosystem, yes? I can't think of any other substance in nature that posse's celluloses set of characteristics (strength, rigidity, etc.). Since the creatures on Yamatai already seem to have developed many of the characteristics of earth creatures, why wouldn't the plants have developed cellulose? (Frankly, it's not a plant without cellulose.) This is chemistry; there is only so many ways to make something.

Though those adaptations would work against the acidic spittle (I just hope it doesn't drool) they seem like a very large expenditure of energy for what seems to be a secondary defensive ability.

---

Unless there is one incredibly massive predator, that would be incredibly difficult. They also seem like a very large expenditure of energy to protect against a single predator. Wouldn't it just be easier for them to defend each other in a herd? As I said in my previous post, they would not prove a big problem for a small, fast predator (like something akin to a lion or jaguar) since they could avoid the few spines. You have also failed to explain how the stresses on the skin and skeleton are handled with such large bony spines.

---

This creature probably isn't fast enough to use them against animals attacking it (or did you mean flora [plants]?). Sharp teeth do not aid in the processing of plants, and many large creatures are more than capable of breaking up trees through simple brute force, they do not need to chop it up with sharp teeth. They just use massive flat ones (which can also be used for processing the plant matter). Elephants can use there tusks to uproot tree root balls; I would imagine these creatures could do something similar.

----

Not comparable. Four legs introduce a great jump in stability and a huge increase in the upper limit for creatures mass. 6 legs do not greatly improve either of these.

Megaluirrel

4 vs. 6 Legs Argument

I think that the six-legged design for the Megaluirrel is advantageous in the fact that a six leg design would be ideal for an animal which spends a lot of time climbing. The design allows for more stability, if one leg slips as long as the center of gravity was reasonably placed it would not create an off balance situation. Not to mention, with the front paws being used for holding nuts, manipulating objects, and so on, the 4 feet would once again be beneficial in keeping the animal stable.

The only disadvantage I could see in this six leg design is that if it were assumed that the animal's legs were designed as typical squirrel legs that it would create a weight issue. However since this is an alien species it is bound to have different bone and muscle structure to compensate. I think that jumping to conclusions about the muscle and bone structure is a bit premature Vesper, in the sense that you jumped to the conclusion that it had typical bone and muscle structure. With a different bone and muscle structure this design would allow for the quick agility described.

Teeth

I would like to remind you that a sharp toothed herbivore is not only possible, but exists. Camels have extremely sharp teeth which are used for eating through thorny bushes without the lining of its mouth being destroyed. It also uses its teeth for defense.

Acidic Spit

Although this is a little more fictional, there are several animals which spit acid, maybe not to the severity as described here. Llamas spit up stomach acids and mucus onto food and each other. All I am going to say is that I think this was a creative addition which truly makes the animal unique. Anyway some acids can be used to break down plant and animal matter. It is entirely possible that it has a defense against its own acid.

Ill post a bit more later, but I think this covers what I had to say about the Megaluirrel. I think it is well designed and will be an interesting addition to the Flora and Fauna of the SARP.

Keep in mind, as Zakalwe said...Don't make assumptions about the evolution of animals on other worlds. However it would be interesting to find where some of these animals fit taxonomically, and to make up the new taxonomic divisions that would cover them.

The conclusion I reached on the bone and muscle where based upon structural and basic anatomical issues. Terminal bone strength is a function of its smallest cross-section, as is muscle strength. These muscles then need to be anchored somewhere on the body, and it seems to me that this could cause interference with the other two legs. Further (as I said) each leg has a lower limit as to the amount (and thus mass) of bone it must have to support its share of the creature and the amount of muscle needed to move the leg. 6 (or 8) legs significantly increases the new mass of the creature (and therefore the amount of energy needed to move it) without significantly adding to speed or stability. All of these things are facts that are invariant of where the creature evolved, just like gravity will work the same and water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and a oxygen.

While it may be true the extra legs could help it in trees I do not see how this makes up for the other downsides. Thousands of species and hundreds of millions of animals climb in trees with just 4 legs (even ones that use the front to for manipulation) every day and don't seem to have significant problems.

----

I was not aware of that, but this creature seems to have evolved and lives in temperate environments and no mention has ever been made to spiky plants in these sorts of areas of the planet and there would therefore be no reason for it to have developed (or kept) such a adaptation, at least as a vegetarian (camels will actually eat meat if other food is unavailable, btw). For nuts and such (including plant matter) flat teeth are hugely more effective at processing the food (camels are ruminants, like cows, so they don't need to chew there food as much)

Scurry-bugs:

These insect-like creatures are slightly larger than a clenched fist, and scurry around the canopy of Yamatai, using their weak wings to get them from tree to tree. They eat the fruit and leaves of said trees as their food, and rely upon a singular defensive measure: They produce a cloud of noxious gas which contains a host of irritant properties, a mild neuro-toxin, an incredibly odious smell which is extremely hard to get rid of, and which interferes with the ability of an animal to breathe. These effects are not fatal for a healthy human, but are extremely debilitating, and makes hunting the bugs a challenge. Preparing them is also a challenge, given as you have to remove the gas sacks. although often regarded as worth it, since their flesh, if that is what you can call it, is noted for its spicy flavour and its tendency to create a feeling of relaxation and calm in the eater, due to some lingering chemicals in the body. It also has a rumour of having much the same effect as Oysters, but stronger. This however has no scientific backing. The flesh, when prepared right is quite crispy. The bugs shell is shaped like a shield, and its body is bright green. It reproduces by stunning an animal with its gas, and implanting eggs into it with a tube which comes out from the centre of its chest. As the eggs grow over the progress of 1-2 weeks they release a constant stream of endorphin like chemicals that make the process painful and keeps the animal it lies within in a state of bliss, until it dies of the bugs eating their way out (a painless procedure, but a fatal one). A Litter of bugs tends to be 3-5 members.

A recent new strain is the ‘Joy-bug' created by a scientist who had to go to the bother of having surgery to extract eggs from his body, partially wanted to get revenge on the bugs, but impressed on the pleasant feeling he had experienced wanted to improve upon it. He thus changed the genetics of the Scurry-bugs. The new ‘Joy-bugs' are a light shade of purple, and release an extremely pleasant smelling gas, which contains chemicals and pheromones to promote a great sense of bliss and happiness. It doesn't have the ability to implant eggs. Its flesh brings on an extremely strong pleasant feeling, and contains a great deal of real aphrodisiacs. It's taste is sweet and suculant.

The bugs are neat, but we wouldn't find them on Yamatai.

Because the Nodal System has allowed Yamataians to basically wipe out all life they didn't want (like mosquitos).

Manapede:

The Manapede takes a form much like that of a centipede, but a very large one, four metres long, and half a metre wide, its thick carapace a muddy red colour. Protruding from its back is a layer of spikes, which serve the purpose of being used as an attack, as it whips its body around, hammering it, and the spikes into the aggressor. The female of the species lack the spikes. There head is adorned with two huge antennae each a meter long, and three sets of large mouthparts, like that of an ant, which it uses to eat, and as defence. In addition it has a set of two front limbs tipped with a poisonous spike which is uses to subdue those creatures it hunts before eating them. In defence they have the technique of rolling up into a ball, which exposes their extremely hard carapace and little else. If this fails it has the ability to detach the second half of its body, and to run away like this, slowly regenerating the rest of its body. Despite its size the Manapede travels very fast along the ground, running faster than a human is capable.

Its flesh is edible, and to some is a delicacy, known for its tough texture, but known for its highly invigorating taste, and that it, for some reason, gets better with age.

I've decided that this and the Scurry-bug will be a creature on Nataria, if that's alright. I know they where terraformed, but I can say it was where they decided to put some of the more dangerous animals. And still harvest them.

Mosquitoes and bugs are an important part of an ecosystem as stated http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1200/fv01125.htm here.

Even if webcomics aren't a reliable source, I don't think someone could argue with that statement >_>
The nodal system enables the entire planet's ecosystem to be monitored and controlled. The roles of "offensive" bugs and such have been filled by other creatures, or the system itself. As a result, the only animals really left on the planet are the kind people have taken a liking to (like birds, fish, farm animals, pets, and some wild animals like bears, squirrels, raccoons, etc.

I would also like to know what the problems are with these races which I have not ammended, or which The-player-formerly-known-as-Rune has countered with his knowladge of Biology?

On the most basic level, is there anything stopping these races being approved? I am willing to limit them only to reserves on Nataria if that what it takes.

What is stopping these animal's being approved? Please if there are problems I'd rather they were brought out so I could answer to them rather than have my creatures languish here in limbo, doing nothing and not getting approved.

This is my third bump, I deleted the second so not to clutter the thread.
