New Idea - RP Jam sessions

I recently came across a rather interesting idea that I'd like others to comment on. For now, I'm going to tentatively call the idea an RP Jam session, but it can change, so hear me out...

The idea is simple, one person creates a topic with a certain theme to it (for example, families of the 5th XF) and takes the role of an NPC. The NPC would then post with reflections on the topic (for example, little Jimmy doesn't have a dad anymore). Other players then reply to the thread with different perspectives on the topic.

The replies can be linked together or can serve as individual vignettes.

These topics are kept to the General Roleplay forum.

Advantages to RP Jam Session:

1. Opportunity to show off creative writing skills
2. Opportunity to flesh out PC RP experiences into a broader picture (5th XF for example)
3. Opportunity to show how the life of those-not-so-important citizens of an empire operates.

Thoughts?

As long as they're a little more organized, I'm 100 percent down.

Organization -- if the OP's got a plan in mind of some sort, let that be stated OOCly somewhere. So we know.

Basically, random JPs? Sounds cool. I sometimes do a similar concept where I ask guest players to create random NPCs and RP them as background characters in a JP (such as the club scene last week).

They don't have to be JPs. They can be SPs that are written by several people and linked together into a common idea.

But, yeah. I'll probably draft something up pretty soon.

Boogiepop Phantom, anyone?

I had an idea for this: A pizza delivery in deep Funky City, Nepleslia.

Double post, I know, but I thought of another UBER reason why this is a good idea:

it gives smaller, less-known areas of the RP attention.

To make this work, it's gotta be a community effort.

Get crackin' at it! Pizza Delivery is up.

Imagine if we all worked together at this all the time. It'd be great for the RP.

And yes, an Elysian one sounds fun too. :)

How about a Star Army team on Lor's devestated surface, at a refugee camp?

Sounds like a good idea too!

I've actually been approached with a lot of different angles for this thing, which makes me happy.

The fun of the Jam is that you can get in wherever and however you want (as long as it's within reason and does not violate the setting).

This is extended to all NPCs in the Jam as well. For example, you could control the biker gang set on mugging Diggers or you could just reply as poor Diggers himself. :(

Or you can introduce the third angle like you suggested.

Imagine it like that game where you'd sit with friends and one guy would write a sentence on a slip of paper then pass it to the guy on the right and so on and so on and so on and...

The reason the format is like this is so that it allows the most freedom to the players as well as not giving them limitations as to what they can do.

And, as an added bonus, they get the taste of the pie without having to eat the whole thing. :)

Nah, I'd feel really uncomfortable controlling someone elses NPC. I know Thad is going to come out and slap me around about now.

How about this? We could abstain from controlling each other's NPCs (or PCs if you ask Thad), but we should still move the main PC (in this case, Joey) so that the story keeps going forward.

Sounds good?

And perhaps we should move this to a public forum so everyone knows what's up...

I'm cool with both of those points, although, again, the idea is not to grow attachments to said NPCs.

It's simply to have some fun and enjoy the wacky ride your fellow players take you on. :)

Yeah, and I second the public thread move.

I don't see any objections. Let's move this thread to Setting Discussion...

(edit: I don't have Mod permission here. Wes can move it if he thinks it's a good idea. :))
