Of the most major of the two races they fit a star-trek like feel with Yamatai being more Eastern culture focused whereas Nepleslia takes a more Western standpoint.
Take a look at both the character creation guides and the Occupations list in order to finalize your character.
Edit: try not to get overly distracted with most of the wiki's articles at first. I know from experience that you'll most likely have an information overload. the wiki is rather large overall.
