NMX Cruiser

After some consideration of the NMX strategy, I came to the conclusion that they were missing a mid-size combatant that could be deployed in fleet operations along side escorts and capital ships as well as take part in independent operations in squadrons or patrol fleets.

So, after many frustrating attempts with DOGA, I present to you: The NMX Cruiser

I realize this is a break from Wes' designs in some ways. No battlepods, the addition of missile turrets, and a very simplistic design. Well, please bear in mind that it's my first time with DOGA.

IC, the lack of battlepods was to allow for storage of expendable munitions and the simpler design was so that it could be rushed into mass production to take part in combat operations ASAP.

Oh look, a hedgehog. :)

I've a good feeling about this one, actually. It feels, to me, as an upgrade of the design philosophy used by older SMX designs.

I figure the room for battlepods and slave pens being tossed out was the economical thing to do. Now, with this, you'd probably have something decent for confrontations against Irim and Eikan-class warships.

Not sure I agree with Fred about this being an improvement on design but that isn't really grounds for not approving something.

At the very least, the engines aren't in the right spot. You have them laid out like they are boat motors rather than rocket engines. The ship would fall off its tail and flip end over end anytime it tried to fire up the engines.

Ok first off a few issues:

1. Why isn't this in the unapproved concepts page?

2. On the NMX Equipment page, please remove the cruiser link. This submission is NOT approved yet so it shouldn't be on the equipment page. Only approved concepts should be on that page, once this submission is approved, then you may add it.

Going to respond in reverse order.

@ Kyle:

1. There's such a page?
2. I put it there since I needed a wiki page link to get started. Have removed it.

@ Uso:

I fully realized the necessity for balanced thrust but since this is science fiction rather than something i intend to take out and fly, I don't see why we can't skip that rule of physics. We have sudden FTL acceleration and deceleration without crews being subjected to massive amounts of inertia (and becoming goo).

I also realize the design is crude. I think the IC explanation for why it is so crude should suffice to satisfy your complaints on the design. Most rush job designs aren't very elegant. I don't mind also saying that this is merely a stop-gap unit whilst I get more comfortable with DOGA to design an NMX cruiser unit with multiple variants. That, however, is a project that won't be started for at least a month or two.

@ Fred:

Thanks. My design philosophy is have a large, blocky hull so as to maximise interior space and reduce surface area. Make it simple and practical, with lots of weapons and combat systems.

As above, it's meant to simply be a sort of stop-gap for the next few years. The real Irim and Eikan killers are yet to be designed. And since I plan multiple variants for those, it'll probably take a while before its completed. Then, I need to refine them with some prototypes in a test RP before deciding which variants make the final cut.

Hopefully once this Type 33 Cruiser is approved, it can start joining the battlefield and killing some mean Irims while I slowly work on the new heavies.

Hey, I see a ship that seems to epouse the SMX 'flying turd covered with guns' methodology here. But it has art. I call that an improvement.

I mean, the NMX ship article are pretty bare. It's not like there's a whole lot to nitpick except the art, and art is better than no art, so - yeah. That's my stance. Thematically, Sigma seems to have stuck close enough... so I consider his design enough of a success to maybe use it myself when GMing at a latter time.

The problem with making an NMX ship is that, well, none of them have all that much data or specifications. I could only really compare the weapons and shields to other ships. I honestly couldn't tell you how far this ship is supposed to go when compared to a scout or a battleship since those don't have speed data either.

Since I'm not their FM, I have no desire to start adding that sort of data to them. Bad things happen when I mess with others' stuff, I think. I can certainly add more detailed specifications if I knew how to fit in amongst other ships. The NMX Carrier only has art.

Well put, the flying turd covered with guns. Suits this to a tee. But while it may look like shit, it's gonna be throwing lots right at you.

This makes the NMX look retarded. If the ship tried to move forward it would flip end over end until it was spinning fast enough to tear itself apart. A player with a character that took highschool level math should be able to know this, and point out that the NMX ships pose no threat because they have no way of chasing an enemy ship.

You can fix this by moving the engines up to the ship's midpoint.

Considering how bare the article is, I think you can manage to put forth enough effort to make the submission look at least somewhat plausible. Wanting to ignore rules is just lazy.

You're not a techmod, Uso, and they've already addressed your concerns. It has art, Sigma has complied with all of the rules or is in the process of complying, but your complaining about the art isn't a basis for unapproval. Also, your complaints about how bare the article is can't stand up when most of the articles have the same or less. No one is ignoring the rules.

If you want to get rid of that precedent, or if you hate the art so much, you're more than welcome to go in and improve it all. Add details to articles, make better art, etc. and so on.

Lol, most of those articles didn't go through the NTSE and the ones that did are much more fleshed out. Note that I'm not complaining about how bare the article is, but the way I see it if you aren't going to put much effort into the article you might as well fix the artwork.

And I'd hardly call saying 'I don't want to' addressing a problem. I know if these end up being used in RP in the nepleslian areas my players are going to get to make fun of them as they destroy themselves.

-Changed Title to H1
-Removed forced line breaks ( \\ )

Why is the shield value 35 instead of 30?

Didn't see the Escort Destroyer's speed statistics. Will be adding those to the page.

@ Wes:

My mistake. Forgot that shields need to be equal to SP. Thanks for pointing it out.

@ Uso:
Really? Throwing barbs at me now because I disagree?

At what point does the principle of suspension of disbelief enter into your role play? When a player dies and he can suddenly be brought back to life through a brain back up and a clone body? Ignoring the conceptual shenanigans of digitally backing up memories and personality, how do you flash clone an adult male human(ish)? And if you do clone him, why do his battle wounds stay with him when they're not a genetic trait (a la Cedric Somerville and his cybernetic eye)?

Going back to the previous example of FTL, how do you explain sudden acceleration and deceleration without the use of some kind of gravity dampener. But still, the crew feel no effects of two heavily oppressing amounts of force on them?

I don't understand how you apply the suspension of disbelief when it's absolutely necessary to pretty much everything in SARP. It's like you're picking and choosing when it applies as it suits your needs.

I'm not changing the design because that's how I wanted it to look. It's the aesthetic that the artist wanted and if the only thing that truly makes use of suspension of disbelief is the position of the engines, oh well. You're more than welcome to make a redesigned variant.

Uso, I agree that your criticism is going below-the-belt. That needs to stop. You've pointed out your concern and there's no need to apply ridicule over it. The submitter made it quite clear it's an as-design artistic decision.

I say we move on. I don't see anything holding this back from being approved, considering the content match the present benchmark for NMX warships.

Approved.

I am not a huge fan of the look, but it's his first NMX design and it's better than not having a cruiser. We can always make a new version or class later.

I would think the glaringly obvious flaw would be reason enough to hold up approval. Common sense dictates that the ship is entirely unusable as a starship in its current form.

This goes back to how even in a pure fantasy setting swords still act like swords. We handwave inertial dampeners so people don't get crushed by acceleration, we have rules for how FTL works so that everyone is on the same page, and we have reasons for why cloning works the way it does (In cedric's case, since the last ST copy they took had the cybernetic eye, the in storage Cedric clone needed to have a cybernetic eye to prevent phantom limb syndrome).

Also keep in mind I'm not throwing barbs at you because you disagree, I am throwing barbs at people because they know this has been done wrong and don't want to even consider fixing it. Ignoring basic common sense and lowering standards because you don't want to fix an unworkable submission should be unacceptable.

Along the same lines, pointing out that we have sci-fi elements in a sci-fi setting is not an excuse to make something that is obviously unusable.

And making things aerodynamic in space is silly too, but people keep right on doing it anyway. Not everyone agrees with your opinions on how the site should be run, and it's approved, so drop it.

Maybe, if Sigma would like, we could add a third engine on a vertical top fin and call it a day.

You can send him DOGA files of the custom turrets, Arieg.

KFY ships are normally made areodynamic because they go into a planet's atmosphere fairly often.

It is silly to suggest common sense should be ignored.
