Open Letter to DocTomoe

From the Lorath Players to DocTomoe,

It's come to the attention of three of the players interested in the Lorath section of the site (Luca, Shotjon, and Arieg) that there are some issues with the current state of the Lorath, both in Roleplay and out of it. As players who are interested in Lorath culture and their state of affairs, we want to see that they get some modicum of good roleplay going. At the moment that isn't happening, and we might have some reasons why. Also, we're shamelessly advertising a Lorath plot-to-be at the end of this letter.

-

1: To Doctomoe, we understand that you treasure your creation a lot, and that you are afraid of change in light of the out-of-character environment. We understand that you're afraid of reprisal if you try to take your creation in a new direction. Unfortunately this overprotectiveness has the side effect making the Lorath become stagnant, and it doesn't really give us players much to work with or be enthused about when you can't make up your mind over whether to go through with something or not.

Do us a favour: Throw some caution into the wind and try experimenting something that doesn't involve prodding Yamatai with a big stick to see what comes tumbling out. We can all see that there's a beehive waiting there. Do we want a repeat of the Freespacer genocide? If you keep asking for it, you might just get it, and we're going to suffer for it.

2: To Wes, please go easier on Doc and give him some lease. It might help him get back on track and make the Lorath more productive instead of resentful of Yamatai.
The characters probably don't even know or care about the events that started all the OOC drama, so why should the players feel the heat for it? Both of you should leave it in the past so we can get on with now, and with the Roleplay.

Let me spell it out for Doc: Hanging onto out of character malice is only making this problem worse and eventually it'll be your downfall. Grow up and get the hell on with it. We players don't care about it, have no patience for it and want no part in it. I don't want to see you flush your own faction down the toilet because you've got a stick up your arse. None of us want to see you dispose of yourself with such sound and fury, it's undignified.

3: To the general public, Arieg wants to step in as a Lorath GM, and is plotting a plot right now that isn't going to be in the +18 section. If you're interested in this, look for him on the IRC and strike up some conversation. He's always open to suggestions, and the theme of the plot is going to be suspenseful space horror, in the vein of Aliens or Dead Space. I'm willing to see how he goes with this, and I am willing to vouch for his enthusiasm as a GM.

Arieg: So gentlemen... this time.. its war! *cackles*

Signed,
-Luca!
-Arieg!
-ShotJon!

Do you really think Doctomoe has malice against me? OOCly I thought we got along okay. We had a nice voice chat with Kyle the other day even, about the Lorath and Yamatai's strained relationship.

I don't believe you prodding Doc into action will accomplish much. Having spoken with him a couple times in the last week, I was surprised to hear that he didn't know which plot I ran. Coupled with his explanation of why, I find that Doc's greatest issue is the fact that he has a number of RL issues pressing for his attention at this point of time.

I've told him that once I finish the major Nepleslian work, I can (in conjunction with other promised projects) get to work to help him hold the fort. However, this is simply a promise for future aid. Its form is yet to be determined because I need to finish work in Nepleslia FIRST.

All of you should, I believe, give the man some slack for the Matriarchy's recent lack of development.

1: Arieg I can see your words in this, no, you're not getting bullpup rifles, furthermore, I tried to do something different with the trip into Iroma space look at that disaster and tell me how that's working out. Furthermore, I have/had plans brewing to sponsor a GM for an exploration or combat plot entirely uninvolved with Yamatai.

Furthermore, anyone who wants to contribute, can, I have not seen anyone out of you three aside from Arieg making any articles, or even consulting me about any articles. When you have ideas, bring them to me.

2: OOC issues and IC issues are kept separate in my writing when applying my writing to actual plot and scenes. Sure, some of my creations are like "Let's jab Yamatai in the eye", but that's just because that is the Lorath mindset. Also, Wes and I are well able to deal with our little rivalry, in fact, we talk casual and wax poetic on a semi-regular basis. Sure, he ticks me off sometimes, but that just happens.

Remember, it has not been more than a decade since the Lorath species has been forced into the interstellar political arena and battlefield. For a species that can live in excess of 200 years, a decade is a mere drop in the bucket. Also, ICly, characters should be keenly aware of past events.

Also, I'm aware my players have no interest in the matter, that is why the plot has not gone in the direction of any sort of confrontation with Yamatai. However, anyone who wants to shoot at some cats, just lemme know and I'll set up a plot. <3

3. I'm going to consider this topic carefully now. I've had a bad history with GMs in the past, and this episode is bringing back some negative memories.

Wes, I'll lay it out for you, sometimes you piss me off, that's the honest truth. Though, what ticks me off more is the way things are handled with your faction, and I can differentiate between the two, but sometimes, it can be frustrating. However, I don't let that stuff get in the way of working well with you as a fellow member of this community, even when I want to flip a table.

Why the spectacle with this thread? Why not pull the guy into an IRC channel and hash it out there? Instead it is left out here for the world to see and not only embarrass him but bring a negative light to his plot. Wouldn't it have proven more constructive to do so that way?

Actually, we already did have this conversation by voice just a couple days ago, when Kyle was worried about feelings between DocTomoe and I. I think once we all got in there, it was clear to all involved that while we have tensions in the RP, in the OOC things are fine, mostly. I don't have any beef with Doctomoe and I understand his position is frustrating. But we're working together for plots as well as can be expected.

Why not run a sustainable conflict between both factions that doesn't involve any kind of railroading?

A lot of players see Yamatai as the bad guys for their clumsiness and lack of finesse wielding their colossal power - especially in the political sphere, but also see the NMX as the enemy.

It'd be kind of cool if we could have some sort of cold-war type thing going on or to use proxy warfare, so there's an outlet for this aggression on both sides that isn't going to escalate into huge meaningful losses for either side.

It could even be ... dare I say it ...

Fun.

While it would be cool and fun, it would also be tricky. Cold wars involve a balance of power, neither side wanting to break into all-out war because it would destroy everything. Even during the Third Conference, Yui was pushing for a stronger approach to the talks; that won't work for a cold war. From everything I've seen, if she senses a threat, that threat is neutralized outright. A cold war between anyone else is possible. As long as Yui's in charge, at this point it would practically be out-of-character for her to not go for a full conflict.

It also doesn't help that there is no check for Yamatai to create a "balance of power" anyway.

Pretty much what Missing said.

Yamatai is very powerful. It has the best ships, highest number of ships and aggressive leaders.

A cold war with Yamatai would go hot very quickly.

You wouldn't get a chance for it to go cold at all really.

Yeah, for cold war you need balance of power and sadly I have to say that it would not be possible between Lorath and Yamatai. Even thought I like Lorath, sadly Yamatai could squash Lorath like bug if they wished so. Now between Yamatai and Nepleslia, between them Cold War would be easy.

Lorath can have Cold War too, just not with Faction as powerful as Yamatai. Someone like Gartagen or Neshaten, when they get found out would be more sensible choice.
