Personal Shielding for Civvies? (and Mercs)

Right, I'm curious if there are any models of infantry-scale shielding open to the civilian market, that don't need to be attached to a full-on PA. See, one of the characters I have planned can't wear armor due to some "irregularities", so to speak, and I don't plan to have him enter a hot zone with nothing but a prayer to protect him.

Ideal would be a small generator capable of being carried around easily and runs off batteries or a tiny reactor. It doesn't need to be able to withstand trillions of shots, just the few opening bullets while he dives for cover.

A ten-second invulnerability in a videogame, if you will.
 
I'm not sure I have any examples, but it's doable and one could be made. It's a matter of finding the right manufacturer, I think.
 
While I am against personal barrier shields, Yori Kataoka has developed a handheld energy coated shield in essence. It can block energy fire pretty well till the battery runs out. If people will buy it I could put it up on origin pretty easily. After all it was invented ICly several months ago in plot, just the plot hasn't ended yet(even though IC time the plot is only a few weeks) So I could technically put that out with out any more dev time, it'd have been easy to refine it with an actual production facility and not just fiddling around in the middle of the night.
 
I believe Zack created a personal shielding device. IDK if it stops bullets but it does protect a user from Vacuum. Maybe it could be upgraded? Maybe a Sheild Gauntlet al la Jackal style? I think the real question is "Does it need to act as a full body armour or does it just need to be there to increase survivability"
