Phoenix Aerospacy's famed XF-14 series starfighters are known as the most dominant superiority fighters in space, but they are first and foremost designed to destroy other enemy fighters, not attack ship and land-based targets. While the XF-14 series is still the ubiquitous symbol of Confederate aerospace supremacy on the battlefield, the XF-15 series was designed to excel where the XF-14 could not. As such, the XF-15 was designed to bring to bear exceptional firepower with high-speed and precision.
The initial production run of the XF-15 used the same Hyperion-C autonomous AI computer that powered the XF-14, but as time passed, engineers and commanders realized that the XF-15 behaved too much like a superiority fighter. XF-15s running Hyperion-Cs continually found themselves embroiled in dogfights with Jaaq'tah Cobra II fighters where they were ill-equipped to deal with the nimble Jaaq'tah superiority fighter. Because of the superiority doctrine that lay in the core programming of the Hyperion-C AIs, XF-15s would engage any enemy fighter if they were in range, ignoring any ground targets that were perhaps more important to the mission profile. While this wasn't a glaring problem, it was bothersome for some commanders and losses of XF-15s to enemy fighters was unusually high.
In order to rectify this problem, the scientists at CONTRA developed the TYPHOON series artificially intelligence computers, which is specifically designed to operate attack craft. The TYPHOON AI is described as 'ten times more aggressive' than the HYPERION series and is said to have almost 'suicidal' tendencies when in combat. XF-15s under the operation of the TYPHOON platform actively seek out any and all non-fighter targets with relentlessly while avoiding enemy fighters if at all possible.
