About the Levis

Due to increasing demand for a light duty patrol craft the Oncari corporation has developed and testing a new craft. The chaotic nature of combat in space and near planet operations required an extremely maneuverable craft. Sacrificing physical armor to reduce mass the Levis prototypes were made to change direction and tumble end offer end in a split second. While it is not the fastest of its type it's extreme maneuverability makes it very tough to hit with slower tracking weapons. Three prototypes were first made, the first being used to tweak and test space worthiness and shielding. The second prototype was field tested in the asteroid belts of the Nassau system to handle control responses and the ships fly by wire modifications. The ships onboard navigation computer can be adjusted to a level of special awareness that plans and adjusts a flight path based on obstacles in the way. Without input the ship is capable of sudden changes in direction to avoid collisions. This technology is still in its infancy and at the time can only steer the ship away from physical matter the size of a power armor or large missile and larger. The third prototype was used in stress testing of the structure and systems. seeing how much punishment it could take before overloading or shield failure. And most importantly the inertia dampening field and computer systems were given the most attention on this craft. Without the computer and inertia system the first high speed turn could likely kill the test pilot inside.

The large diagonal panels of the fighter serve as the shielding array and produce the customary angled deflection used on previous Oncari ships. The pilot is suspended in a formed harness instead of the traditional chair with controlls laid out infront of him/her along with two flight sticks to controll the craft. The inside of the cockpit "windows" are acutaly a type of dispaly screen projecting the hud over the entire surface of the ship along with predicting flight paths of tracked targets. The system can be adjusted to match whatever weapons are employed onboard the craft displaying a prediction point for Pilot's to orient their weapons on.

History and Background

Lacking the resources and funding for powered armor Oncari has settled on suppling fighter craft to fill the rol of close support and patrolls. Oncari's chief designer (Olaf Corinsk) was intrigued by some of the Xeno-biology samples collect off world of insects that for all laws of aerodynamics should not be able to fly. However in despite natural law excelled at just that. The fact that they were unstable gave them the advantage of manuverability over more aerodynamicaly "sound" preditors. Inspired by this Olaf went about appling that to a starfighter. Inside an atmosphere the Levis was slow and unflyable without wasteing fuel and much of the computer's processing time making course corrections. But in space it mimiced it's insperation agile and nimble a conciderable match for any would be "preditors."

Performance Statistics

Speed (STL): .64c
Speed (FTL): Levis craft do not have a FTL drive
Speed (Aerial): Mach 1.1 (Only used in emergancy landings)
Speed (Water): Can not operate underwatter on a planet's surface.

Range (Distance): A micro reactor provides power for 200 days with fuel rods
Range (Support): life support lasts 10hrs
Lifespan: 15 yrs
Refit Cycle: Maintanence is required after every flight, refiting after 5 years.

Ship Systems

Hull: A thin Andrium/Carbon skin covers the ship's exterior. It provides little in the way of physical protection aginst things larger than small arms. Any more mas to the ship seems to effect the manuverability of the craft adversely. Higher grade materials are available but would drive the price to high for the adverage consumer.

Environmental Systems: the Levis ships are equiped with a gas strage tank that can supply a pilot's flight suit and cockpit with a stable atmosphere for 10 hours without recharging.

Inertia Dampeners: In order to keep the pilot safe from the extreem g forces Oncari has added a small Inertia dampening field to the Levis ships. This system does not negate the effects of G-forces on the pilot but instead acts as a buffer. Reduceing the felt G's to tollerable levles. Even with this system in place a reckless pilot can still injure themself in extreme high speed manuvers.

Shielding:

The ship's large diagonal panels act as the shield emitters, projecting a angled deflection grid over the small craft. The system is designed to redirect energy rather than absorbing it directly. This allows the for same fortitude of more direct shield systems but requires a lower power output. The design is very simaler to that used on the Corax class ships only the system is conciderably weeker due to the limits of the fighter's micro reactor.

Atmospheric operation:

Testing of prototype 3 inside a planet's atmosphere has had mixed results. Because of the unstable nature of the airframe the Levis quickly exhausts it's available power in a little over six hours. Needing constant thrust and correction to stay aloft. However in the role of a VTOL or close support craft it's unstable nature makes it ideal for manuvering with the terrain. Designs are on the drawing board for a multi role version of the Levis equiped with landing gear and variable wings to work in space aswell as planetside. The origional three prototypes require recovery racks on starships and landing towers to dock safely. Alternatively the pilot can ditch the craft in an emergency landing. The ships computer in turn switches all available power to the inertia dampening system to give the pilot a better chance of survival in the event of a crash.

Sensor and Computer Systems:

The Levis fighters are equiped with a planatary range magnometric scanning system, Simaler to those used on previous Oncari designs. The main diference with this system is that it is coupled with the craft's flight and motion prediction systems alowing the craft an awareness of it's surroundings. Made to police busy chaotic ports and navagate trecherous asteroidfields the sensor system is argueably the most intricate part of the ship.

There is a manual overide that will bypass the safety and collision avoidence systems allowing the pilot a direct unbuffered controll of the ship. Sevral warnings built into the UI of the vessle disuade pilots from useing the pure manual controlls while in confined areas. One jerk of a controll stick could snd the fighter smashing full throttle into a bulkhead if one were not carefull.

The HUD of the craft is built into the window pannles. a translucent polymer acts as a display screen showing pertinent information infront of the pilot on each surface. Friend or Foe icons, excelleration data, fireing prediction points, and course corrections can all be displayes seemlessly over the outer cockpit view. Aft displays can be pulled up by controlls on the keypads infront of each hand.

Weapons:

As always Oncari provides no weapons onboard the production modles. Testing however has occured with energy, projectile, and hybrid weapons with fair sucess. The Levis craft seems to be most proficient with gauss weapons. Their high rate of fire and armor penatrateing capeability are a good match for the natural agility of the craft. There are only two internal hardpoints for weapons. Larger items must be fitted in pylons on the "wings" of the ship. While energy weapons are possible the Levis's micro reactor limits the rate of fire of heavier weapons, overloading can cause serious power failures or a drop in engine or shield performance.

Alternatively a small launcher system located on the ventral side of the ship can hold any number of short range missle weapons. Oncari is also testing a grapnel device that can be used to latch onto objects in space This could be used as a tow cable or in emergancies to retrive people adrift in space after ejection or a power armor malfunction.

The internal magazines for solid ammo hold roughly 2 cubic meters of projectiles each.

It looks promising.

Finish fleshing it out and see how it goes. I advise you to PM some members if you're unsure about weapon technology, particularly Zakalwe.

Looks we gots us a Banshee.

Yea i was putting in edits when i had the time. this one is just a backburner project. drew up a cool fighter and decided to put it to use.

I think this would be an amazing urban weapon and with armor piercing armaments, it could provide brilliant warfare roles, tank/bunker busting and anti-personel weapons.

Two or three of these would work well in surpression against power-armors, methinks.

*shakes head* Most tank busters never reach Mach 1, from choppers to the A-10 Thunderbolt. Anti-personnel requires even less speed (again, choppers). You want fast for other aerial craft, I think, as they tend to be more maneuverable.

It looks good so far. What's the cockpit like?

i am gonna try to draw up a piots' eye view or like s little diagram but because it's designed for space flight primarily it's ariel range and flight time would be seriously limited as it would need constant thrust and course corrections to stay aloft. Something like 6 hours in the atmosphere is all i could really see it doing.

But i'll work on the cockpit design tonight. like it said it's a work in progress.

Some internal details.

the pilot is in a standing position suspended in a harness the foot peddles are not normaly used in 0-g except when preforming complicated movements giving the pilot controll of more axis of movement.

You are getting better at drawing every day!

Same cockpit arrangement.

In tests, stood cockpit pilots can happily endure 12 G before they pass out whereas liniar cockpits only deal with 8G.

Sadly, it also makes rudder functionality difficult and the height makes a lot of existing design techniques on the "known scale" of fighters null since tall aircraft do not handle body stress as well as thin craft.

I dont see a cockpit discription in that post.

Also what is freespace?

As for the controll issues i was tring to push the point that this is a ship that relies on very complicated fly-by-wire buffers and corrections to stay aloft. The ship inturprates the pilots input and sends the craft spinning and banking tword it's objective. It's suposed to be an intuitive system. with the drawback that it is fragile.

Checks and balances. I dont want to make a godly ship, just one that feels unique. It's my Itano Circus fighter ^^

Millia, if the gameplay were complex enough to entertain, I'd enjoy it.

I'm sick of getting space fighter titles like the endless chain of 3rd person zero physics shooters coming out on consoles.

I finish the games in 3 hours and people look at me like I'm weird when I call the game utter shite.

I think the nexus games were more like homeworld style with a better plot but you controlled larger ships not fighters.
