Space Toyotas?

Thinking about the Independents faction, I have realised that I don't really know what they have. What prevalent civilian starships exist, that a mercenary or a small-time pirate might fly? They cannot be expected to fly military grade warships, right?

...right?

To elaborate, I am in the early processes of developing a series of mercenary jobs for Independent characters. For that, I will need to know what kinds of vessels are common across the entire sector to make them inconspicuous and untraceable, as many of the jobs may occur within different astral territories.

It would not do for hired guns to be traced by the maker of their vessels, implicating their employer.

An analogy: The little white van parked across the street in front of your house, which you never bother to notice. It is packed full of CIA agents monitoring your communications or preparing for a raid.

If you want to play an independent you might not need a star ship, you can join other plots, and it's also assumed that generally you can get transport to where you need to by negotiating with ships going that way when you need it. Also you can get on a developing 'space liner' line and get there that way.

However if you really want a ship then there are a few companies you can look at. I do not claim that these are the only companies that sell ships to civilians these are just the ones off the top of my head. Origin Industries Fleet Yard has a nice selection of ships though most are targeted more for company use as opposed to personal. Geshrinari Shipyards is also a good choice. They have more ships targeted at personal use and budget. Both companies also have other branches that are a good place to look for equipment for an independent character too.

A clarification: I probably do not plan to create an Independent character, this information will be used in planning for larger operations, such as contacts, target vessels, HVT smuggler ships, NPC hired guns and loaned transports for dirtside and undercover jobs, as well as "specialist" vehicles for unique missions. (e.g. Protect a retrofitted mining ship until it finishes dismantling a decommissioned orbital base)

Thank you for the information, it is a great help.

Everyone plans to make an Independent character they just don't know it yet...j/k that's cool though. If you ever need anything done though my plot the Wayward focuses on a ship that takes contracts, we're in the middle of one now.

LOL, I love how you put toyota there since It's the basically the only truck that I ever see militias use. Nothing says Jihad like a toyota with a light cannon bolted onto the truck bed to blast walls in urban combat and send concrete fragments in your face.

Attack of the cessna!!! Wonder if anyone tried to actually attach hydra rockets to them I bet it wouldn't end as well. ~Tries to get flight of the bumble bee out of his head~

Biafra Baby. A customised Cessna equivalent that was quite popular with mercenaries.

Yes, those are rocket pods riveted on a "Cessna".

The depicted scene actually happened, I kid you not.

Actually when I think about it makes a shit load of sense for a air support run since the Cessna operates great at low speed and low altitude which is exactly what you want making swooping passes and delivering weapons.

Ships like the Iron Ferret (Bounty Hunts) and the Concordia Veil (The Fringe) are common ones for independent plots, but those are more like RVs than Toyotas as they are used mainly for living space.

I'm surprised shuttles haven't come up. To me they are the trucks of Star Army space. Remember, the ISC Phoenix plot started with just a shuttle.

Depends on the type of shuttle. My mental impression of them is of smallcraft used as ferries to and from larger vessels to stations and planets, not long range transport into deep space.

Am I mistaken?

Well some of the shuttles like the shuttles that are about 10 thousand KS plus have a range of about 135 light years over 10 days.
