No. Pure and simple. Not interested in this nor the mandatory requirement for all star systems. Nepleslia has a template and it works.

I agree, we are working just fine with our current templates. This will only restrict the creative efforts of anyone seeking to expand upon current elements in the setting by forcing them to adhere to a rigid "standardized" way of doing things. This reeks of being unnecessary red tape.

I honestly believe a template is a good idea for individuals that want to develop star systems but are feeling lost as to how they should format it. Most of the templates we have on the site are for beginners and many veterans on the site often modify standard templates with extra information rather than less information. Over all, I believe star systems on this site should be more detailed in order to facilitate RP in them (such as notes on locations of interest, cultures inhabiting them, etc). Of course, that is just my opinion, but it's a good opinion to throw out for public consumption.

To my way of looking the Simple Star system is far more complex than most of the star systems we currently have out there.

I do not think we need all of the data in the simple one, but I see it as a guide for some of the things that should be. I would like to see it a bit simplified.

For example a newly discovered unexploited world has no need for these sections. As such they should be removed or marked as optional.
  • Government and Population
  • Major Imports and Exports
  • Major and Historical Events
  • Facilities
Planetary rings are natural satellites so should not be in the facilities section

The planetary section only has a heading for Major Planets. This implies that minor planets are not needful for documenting, or would be in a separate and as of yet not defined category. System objects should just be listed in order starting with closest to the sun and outward.

Use of StarGen should be a suggestion, a person should be free to choose their own objects for a system they are creating. Further if we are going to suggest folks use it for making systems. We should probably have some sort of agreement with Jim Burrow to avoid any copyright issues.

Personally, I think we need either a template, or a guide for our star systems.

In the long run, it'd help GMs plot out their plots, and new players to understand the setting a bit better. The only downside is that even the 'simple' one is likely to be too complex for what we're looking for. On the other hand, most planets and things we currently have on-site are made to a standard far lower than this. Low enough to be embarrassing. And with us hoping to expand territory now that the war is over? We'd benefit the very most from having something in between. Something that's filled with just the important facts that players need, but not too much overkill.

Arieg? What I recommend is that you remove the vast majority of data on the planets from this template - their info should be a separate sub-article so that the system article can be a lot more focused, simple and tidy. Instead, it should only list things about the system. Name the planets and floaty thingies, but focus on the system. I like the Govt, Population, Imports/Exports as well as the Historical sections in particular.

I think we still need a baseline and a common method of construction (IE everyone using the same setup and same positioning of things) and that again there needs to be a bare bones basic requirement for submission.

Why not do something similar to what is done with characters? Have a little fact card style section up at the very top of the page, and then the more in depth information all below that.

That's a cool idea.

I think I'm going to cease pushing this, in the end I guess everyone has their own picture on how to detail their respective elements of the setting and standardization may hurt their efforts (no matter how small and vague the information is). But I do stress that SARP's setting information is still going to be rendered mostly to word of mouth if the present practice continues I'm just sorry I no longer really wish to proceed with working on this.... I have my own projects to worry about right now.

Push it or not, we currently have no good, solid guide for writing system articles, leaving us with a lot of quality control issues, which we can even see in the NTSE at the time of this writing. Our articles are either too detailed in some cases, or not detailed enough in others. Worse still, most of us can't even make up our minds on what's necessary in an article. Even if we all want to detail our systems the way we want to, there isn't even a set benchmark or default from which we can get ideas or compare with what we're all individually doing. Even though Arieg's articles are too in depth, we can still pick out bits and pieces that work and/or are needed. We can then mix and match those with pieces of pre-existing system articles - ideally, to form a guideline, rather than a strict template.

Any suggestions on what we'd need at least?

I think this is a good idea if nothing similar has been implemented since this thread, which to my knowledge hasn't happened. If I'm wrong just disregard this. If not, maybe we could agree on some sort of standard for system articles to have so that approval might be easier for those submissions?

I'd definitely like to help with the planet types classifications, and so on. The current classification system seems more than a little bit sketchy. Guidelines are better than strict rules, since systems that are mainly vacation spots have visitors with different priorities than ones that are battlefields, or that exist to attract independent entrepreneurs, and so on.
