Yaichiro stepped into the PAP room, and got into one of the Training Pods...the EIES emulator engaged, and he started in an empty blue area with a large rotating 5th XF icon... "EIES, connect to PANT-IES and download file kagespace\proto\cri000.rend. Open file and generate virtual file. Base armor: Standard Star Army, 5th XF, Taii, Command, male uniform, no Power Armor."

The EIES complied and the Hotaru’s attention drifted towards the lone Sakura. The file downloaded and the room was lit at Yaichiro’s command. It burst into life, the volumetric image rendering in perfect detail from the largest to the smallest object. Everything touchable, workable. The space was complete.

The virtual corpses, blood, and debris were made manifest, and Yaichiro began to survey the scene in his virtual body... "Log all information in the EIES, the Asuka's MEGAMI, and Hotaru's PANT-IES. All files will be stored at their respective areas in kagespace\hidden\inquisition000\cri000.dat. Now...highlight all impact sites from weapons fire and identify weapons type from the scorch marks and radiation levels."

The display was overlaid with a myriad of information. Impacts were highlighted and the direction of the shoot was tracked. Broken objects were color coded and impressions of the completed objects were rendered in their last known location before the PANTHEON blackout. A volumetric window opened beside the lone Yamataian displaying the relative times of each impact and the weapon types involved. Meanwhile, the omniscient eye of the Hotaru’s PANT-IES watched with interest. Here was a man trying to solve a puzzle in her databanks, trying to fill in a blank spot. It was interesting. The Sakura’s EIES was suddenly co-opted and a massive surge of available processing appeared on Yaichiro’s display.

Yaichiro noted the boost in processing power, thankful for the allocation...he was surprised by it, but it worked well. Several of the more powerful shots were traced to a higher vantage point...he moved to this vantage point, and studied the area carefully, looking for any clues...fortunately, the shooter had remained stationary, and the shots intersected at the shooter's likely position. "...Please calculate the likely origins of the shots in relation to the floor and other shots. Please use this to calculate our unknown assailant's height..."

A slight weight appeared on Yaichiro’s shoulders as Hotaru squished up to him and peered over his shoulder. She was short and slender; the sparkly look of wonder in her eyes. She shook her short white hair, turned and pointed at the shooter’s vantage point. A neko’s outline appeared over the simulation. “Neh, neh…I think she’d be about this tall, yia? Buuuut, hmmm, she could’ve been floating all casual like so it’s not a spot on positive. Should be pretty good though!”

Yaichiro had never seen Hotaru before, so he was naturally a bit surprised... "Who might you be...You are not the EIES, MEGAMI, or a logged in Neko...are you a PANT-IES avatar?"

She stuck her tongue out playfully. “I’m Hotaru, pleased to meet you, Yaichiro-san. It’s pleasure to meet you face to face at last. Makes a change from, eheheh.” Hotaru stared dreamily into the middle distance; drifting slowly across the room in a haze of imagination. Absentmindedly, she wiped the drool from her mouth and returned, reluctantly, to reality. “Sooo, who’d ya think did it?”

"That's what I am trying to figure out. As for her hovering...I suspect that the recoil from maximum level blasts would have pushed her out of alignment, and at least altered the other shots origins...but all three cross fairly cleanly on one vertical axis..." He said, indicating the shots...when he noticed something...his eyes went WIDE at what he saw. "...I would like to formally log that this person, from this vantage point, targeted the Blackcoat, Hanabusa-Chujo, AND Misato-Shosho...We may have a third independent party involved in a multi-faceted assassination attempt."

“Ooooo,.you’re right! So there were two shooty people and one of them was going for everyone else. Ohoho, the plot thickens. Question is though, why were they doing all the shooting in the first place. Even had the nerve to turn me off!” Hotaru pouted and went about poking the impact points.

"It might be because we weren't supposed to even know about the third person...they probably wanted us to think that Misato-Shosho and Hanabusa-Chujo killed each other or something. But we have a deeper issue than we thought...I'll have to tell the Taisho at our meeting that we still have traitors among us...unfortunately, we only have the other one's height approximation...is there any sort of other clue here I can't see? Maybe hair strands with DNA or something odd like that?" He asked, hoping for something more...

She shook her head. “If there was, I didn’t find anything. Ahhh, everything was so messed up afterwards. My nice clean deck was all battle scarred and dirty.” Hotaru sighed. “And then all this got me shot at! Mou, some people.” The avatar glanced about the simulation again. “You know though, since our assassins weren’t working together, maybe it was an opportunity thing? We know where all the admiralty was at the time of the shootings, so the second person can’t have had the authority to turn me off. Hmmm,”

"...You know, you're right! ...Can you tell me who entered and exited the area of interference during the time of the assassination?" Yaichiro asked, trying another way...

Hotaru grinned from ear to ear. “Mhm, I can do that. It was only this tiny little area that got all blocked off you see, so no one else would notice till it was too late (so sneaky!). Soooo, I should be able to tell you who entered and exited during the incident and where everyone was when I was switched back on. Yosh!” Hotaru pumped her arms into the air and streamed the data into the simulation chamber. If anyone entered or left the area during the blackout, they’d be tagged. Anyone in the blackout’s area after Hotaru had been switched back on would be tagged. A list appeared. Their number of suspects had suddenly gotten much smaller.

"...Please cross-reference with our range of height, alright?" He asked, trying to narrow it down further...

A second list appeared side by side with the first, it was far smaller. Hotaru giggled with glee and pointed at the results. “We’re so smart~! Lets have a lookie what we have here.”

"Wow...okay...do we have another way of narrowing this down?" He asked, thinking...

“Hau, I could try a psyche analysis to see who’s most likely to do what they did. Plus, I could see who recharged their weapons after the shooting, though that one’s a bit of a long shot. Auauau, I’m a bit stuck on what to do honestly. There’s a limit to what I’ve got to work with.” Hotaru twiddled her thumbs and stared down the list; arranging them based on their history and personal connections to the admiralty.

"...Well, we've at least narrowed it down to maybe two-dozen..." He said, scratching his head. "That's progress at least..."

The lights flickered above Hotaru; a sinister gleam lighting up her face as a rather large knife flicked itself from hand to hand. “Two dozen, we can go through those in an afternoon, can’t we Yaichiro-san? Find out which one of them shot my gorgeous inter--I mean, attempted to shoot our beloved leaders.”

Yaichiro seemed slightly disturbed by this comment... "Well...tag them as not allowed to leave...except for the ones exceeding me in rank. Those can only be recommended unless you hold a high enough rank yourself. I will have to talk to the Taisho about this one..."

Hotaru returned promptly to normal and responded to Yaichiro’s request. “Annnnd, done! Everyone we can keep around, we’ve got locked here until we can properly deal with them. Shall I send everything to Katsuko-Taisho and arrange a meeting for you?”

"Yes, though she has already requested one with me once she's done with the Grand Admiral on another matter...so I'll be seeing her soon. But yes, please send this to her...it should be of great use...and I have to ask you to watch over me, just in case our third party is still watching..."

“Hai, Lieutenant~ I’ll send Katsuko-Taisho both lists and a summary of our findings,” a very slight pause.”, she knows! And don’t worry Yaichiro-san, I’ll watch you. Yes. Mhm, you’ll be okay...ehehe”

"Okay, good..." He said, sighing... "I guess we should save an unlogged hard copy...load it to this drive..." He said, typing in the directory '\kagespace /redirect external\lsyykh523\hidden\inquisit000\cri000.rend, cri000.sim', and cri000.dat'. "...What's with all the laughing?" He asked, noting the neko's odd behavior, and admittedly a little on edge...

Hotaru answered bluntly, utterly unable to lie to the officer, and frankly unbothered by the truth anyway. “My personality, sir. People describe me as a perverted voyeur, sir, and all because I watch them while they sleep. And other things. Because I can.” She nodded.

He blushed immediately, remembering his time with the Taisho... "Ano...have you been watching me lately?"

“I watch everyone, Taii. It’s my job. And it’s fun.” She grinned mischievously. “I know eveeerything!”

His face turned a brighter shade of pink... "Well...I hope you're good at keeping secrets then..."

“Of course, Yaichiro-san. Most of the time anyway, but ah, I get so dirty at times that I just can’t concentrate and things suddenly slip out. If only I got an extra coat of polish every now and again, and maybe some new easy-clean flooring it’d be so much easier.” She sighed wistfully.

Yaichiro sighed... "I suppose we can work on some maintenance drones or something..." He said...

“Yay! Thank you, Yaichiro-sama~ you’re so generous and kind.” The station’s avatar patted the Yamataian. “Yes, though. We need to capture the criminals and bring them to justice. So I’ll go about and make sure no one on the list escapes.”

Yaichiro nodded, thanking the avatar...though the pat on the head was a bit odd... "Alright, thank you very much...We're a lot closer than we were before, and hopefully we can avert any additional threats. I'd like station security boosted a little higher, even higher than it is right now, to bolster against additional internal threats of opportunism."

Hotaru thought for a moment. "Hmm...I'm not sure I can get it any higher than Misato-san and Eriko-san have it at the moment, but I'll see what I can do. So I shall now be off to get everything ready! Bye, Yaichiro-san. It was nice to meet you~" The avatar waved and vanished back into thin air...though being the entire station, she wasn't really gone.

Yaichiro disconnected and then stepped out of the armor pod...and suddenly felt happy that he needn't strip to get into the pod...

After that, he walked over to a Yamataium safe, and opened it. Pressing a button, a very small disk ejected. He placed the disk on his belt, and confirmed the saving of the files to the other areas he'd dictated. He then updated his will to indicate what to do should he be unexpectedly disposed of, and went to get an ST backup which would have the files attached to it...after all, if the murderer was above him in rank, they could probably determine his actions easily...save for the writing of that disk or his ST information with the attached files.
