Type 31 Tank

Visualize a shallow pasta bowl. Now flip it over. That's the basic shape of the shields. They don't go under the tank. The shields protect the tank against shots from above and horizontally.
 
That's how I visualized it from the start. I was concerned with well. Your bottom is still exposed to mines, traps, and the like. But, it's your tank, you make the calls on it.
