It had been two days.
Two days since they had been home and Aashi was already getting pulled out of bed every half hour to teleconference with a group from the NothEast by the Commonwealth. It seemed her long escapade away from the Kagami Galaxy had made the heart grow fonder, for both sides.
She was coming back into her and Ulysses' bedroom when the short cry of an infant could be heard. Soon thereafter, a duet was formed as her twin children began a caucophony of crying.
As Aashi entered their room, she saw Ulysses rolling out of bed. Dark bags hung under the captain's eyes as he plodded over to the two cribs at the end of the bed. "Shhh..." Ulysses cooed to the babies. As he looked down, he couldn't help but smile at his beautiful children.
They ended up getting suprised with twins, a boy and a girl. He bent over and scooped each of the bawling children into and arm and began to bounce and sway from side to side. "Shhh... It's okay, daddy's here." He then turned and smiled softly at Aashi. "And mommy's here too."
Aashi grimaced, not excited for what she was about to say, "Not for long."
Ulysses grimaced, matching Aashi's expression. "Damn." He sighed. Their daughter, Aani slowly calmed to Ulysses's voice and nuzzled her check against his chest. "What's the job?" He asked as he contiued to calm down their son, Seth.
Making a small motion of her hand, she said, "There's a small insurgency happening near us among independent Iromakuanhe forces and some NVR offshoots. It seems there was a failed stunt in Iruotl to kill the head of state, so the fighting has moved away from the white star and is heading towards us. What we're going to do is keep the children here in heaven and fight the demons at the door."
He looked down at the twins for several long seconds, then nodded. "Yes, we need to lead the monsters to hell, where they rightly belong..." Ulysses replied to Aashi. "I'm assuming you have already told the ground crews to get the ships ready?" he asked. He needed Fenrir up and running as quickly as possible.
With a nod, the mother said, "I have, we're set to go within the hour." Her sapphire eyes settled on Seth, then Aani, then Ulysses. Then she was looking back at the twins, who took after both parents in different ways.
Seth's skin was dark amber, like his mother, and had the unformed bone crests atop his head, but no actual bone plates where his entry ports would be able to hook into Iromakuanhe devices. His eyes were two different colors, grey like his dad on his left side and deep blue on the right.
Aani was the opposite however, her skin was light like her father. She also had the unformed bone crests on her head. Her eyes were also the opposite of her brother's. Her right eye was grey and her left was deep blue, contrasting Seth's. She turned her head to Aashi and giggled, reaching her hands out to her mommy.
Aashi let her hands fall to under Aani's arms and picked her up, bringing her close to her cheek and pressed the infant's soft head to her cheek, breathing in as she did, "I love you both so much..."
Aani cooed and pressed into Aashi, as if understanding her mother's words. Her little hands reached up and began to play with Aashi's horns.
Now with one of Ulysses's hands free, he pulled Seth closer as well, holding his son close to his shoulder. "Yes... Mommy and daddy love you both so much."
With a happy smile, Aashi looked down at her children then at her husband, kissing him gently on his cheek as she did.
Ulysses smiled as well and returned the kiss. "Come on, they need to go back to sleep." He said, moving to set the twins down and looked to Aashi, who was smiling warmly.
"They sleep while we work," Aashi said, "to protect them." To Seth, then Aani, she said, "Sweet dreams..."
