A simple writer's excuse to explain why our ships look the way they do and why so many (Yamatai particularly) have these sweeping aerodynamic hull-shapes. I was originally writing it for a ship and thought it was a nice bit of fluff that should be shared with the entire setting since it benefits everyone and excuses a guilty pleasure of ship design.

This suggestion has been closed. Votes are no longer accepted.
I... actually really like this. It's a neat little way to explain both our speeds, and the shape of lots of the ships we have. Seems a bit weird up front, but it's not overly complicated, and not hard to understand, so it works really well.

I'm looking for inconsistencies in the setting or things which are poorly explained and trying to manufacture reasons for them that don't require any kind of special effort. Just "accepted facts" of the game.

One is people love aerodynamic hulls and wings in space because they look really cool and badass.

We should find our inconsistencies or problem articles and create like a bounty system for re-writes, with the reward purely being bragging rights or something that helps a given faction of the user's choice.

FYI: The reason Yamatai's ships have wings is because they're used as radiators, antennae, and as projector arrays for spacial distortion fields like CFS. Also many of the ships are atmosphere-capable.

Before I start a checklist, I want to express some wariness on this submission and see some response.

While I understand that, scientifically speaking, the ships and their technologies across the SARPverse don't conform as you might like, they've also been roleplayed in many different ways for years.

You've hedged pretty well by writing in that they aren't even mentioned in ship design, but there's technology out there (CDD, for instance; CFS even more) that eliminates the need for the things you're talking about. And other starship creators or tech gurus that have submitted vehicles or vessels have had other ways of getting around beyond what you're speaking about here.

I see what you are doing. And I sympathize with it -- but I am having a hard time taking this bit in when we've not had a wit about this in canon and have done just fine.

I formally reject this submission, but I do so with great sympathy.

This, unlike the plasma guide, goes too far. All of what I said above applies, so that's why I do so without any hard feelings, Leigh. Your intentions are in the right place.

In which case, the article could be pulled back into much simpler. Clipping its wings, turning it into something a lot less substantial and pervasive, so its an implication of function rather than a hard rule to follow.

Even the implication seems beyond what we could do now. There's just too much canon to overcome.

Incorporating it into future designs? That I see as a possibility.

Ah. I've simplified it down to "curvy shapes accelerate faster in space and respect the speed standard"

Oh well. I guess I could always write this into something new at a later date.

Do you think that's still worth doing?
