Yamatai Census of YE 46

Ok, so I've started an article for it here Census of YE 46 on Star Army Space Roleplay

Basically, officially counting how many people live in each place. These numbers would then be populated to the struct data of the parts of Yamatai. If they change later, we can update the struct data.

The numbers are generated to be roughly in line with Ziph's law. We can change the rankings as needed and I'll update it on the wiki.

If we like the idea, I'll submit it.

Tami has a population of 1,283,529 as of YE 45. As the system’s senator player/steward I do not wish this to change to the 2,103,000 listed here.

Additionally, the unwanted million population increase to my system suggests such has been inflicted upon other systems, and I do not think that is appropriate.

This should not be implemented.

I have updated the population in accordance with your wishes. I'll note that this table is not population in thousands, but population in millions.

Many systems in Yamatai do not have population data for them. This is an attempt to update that information to something that makes sense given what we know about Yamatai's population. I acknowledge that some systems may be oddly placed, which is why I'm putting it out there for community comments.

Shurista has posted a population of 1.25 bn as YE 45, and I do not mind what the increase does, as I doubt that it would actually affect that initial number. If a more accurate Shuristan populace is requested, then I will place it as 1,249,118,228 people of any species currently living permanently on Shurista proper, with an additional 1,263,558 living or stationed on Capricorn module.

I still do not think this is a good update. Population numbers should be taken care of by senator players (it’s part of the job) with the approval of FMs, or done by the FMs themselves in the absence of a senator player. It isn’t helpful to have someone without deep knowledge of the YSE make these changes.

This stems from a discussion that was occurring on discord earlier that Wes was a part of since a great many systems don't actually have population numbers. And if they do, it hadn't been updated since whenever. Soban just took some initiative towards fixing that rather quickly. Ultimately it is up to the stewards to voice their opinions (as I did on the discord and you here) and Wes to even approve the idea. There are some systems on that list that likely only have half a million at most (and likely below that) like Arzank.

Reactions: Wes
The population of Ushobrakflug by its one inhabited planet and station is roughly 120,000,000 more or less due to being only recently receiving a colonization effort in the past few years. Perhaps in a few years due to its location in the core it might reach the billions but not quite yet!

I have plans for that but I am a lazy man who bites off more than he can chew and decides to chew it later tho (I join or make so many plots it takes all my free time!)

Really nice initiative I must say tho! a lot of little things are often overlooked and it takes discussions like this to actually put a spotlight on it for the people who might want to do something about it as a charity for the setting~

I've updated the wiki list. None of the numbers are set in stone and are all open to community discussion. Community discussion and input is why this is in the world building forum not the setting submissions forum. If I don't do something when I'm thinking about it, it generally takes a lot longer for it to get done.

One of things I'm thinking about is also adding descriptions to systems that don't have them since I'll probably be visiting each of them anyway when we finally figure out what we want.

I really appreciate the help, Soban. This is one of those things on my to do list that been there for years. Can post more when I find free time.

The following all have populations of 0, yet they have populations listed due to their wikis not being updated. Due to Project Checkout and being turned to Zesuanium (Until Wes has the Resurgance use the Gift given to them by the Norians) they are not inhabitable -

Hici'emi
Nyli
Lor

Thanks.

Vicky is a restricted military base with no civilian population whatsoever. It is an inhospitable ice world, and the SAINT personnel there cannot claim it as their residence.

New Vicky is similar, except it was also scuttled when conquered by the Kuvexians. No one lives there and it is no longer even patrolled by Star Army ships.

Even beyond these, it’s very inappropriate to retcon in a population boom across the board.

All right, so I've been making a list, I had to add quite a few systems so the list has been added to. I also decided to change my approach slightly. There are currently 87 systems on my list. I'm doing it by area of the empire, here are my thoughts on the parts I have done in detail.

Abwehran
According to the Abwehran Star Empire page, it has a total population of 10,843 million. The population statistics are kinda borked. Three of them have identical populations, Jaspis's population doesn't make any sense, and the rest don't have population data. For that reason, I distributed the population according to Zipf's law.

Bard Cluster
Ahmar, Ahrbeg, Akina, Talori, and Mevar had population data. Murf, Tsuyosa, and Yicuqibu don't have population data.

Core Yamatai
All systems in core Yamatai have population data.

Elysia
Elysia Novus and Keren have population data. Agathe, Anakes, Artume, Asteu, Eudokia, Euthalia, Iole, Keren, Minyas, Thais, Xanthe don't have population data. So I distributed the population data according to Zipf's law.

Hidden Sun Clan
The only population data is for the whole of the Clan, so I distributed the population according to Zipf's law.

Murf: Might be work poking Alex since his corporation moved and built a city 5 years ago ingame. Long enough to attract others now that there is infrastructure there.
Tsuyosa: It's the regional capital for the Bard Cluster. But regions haven't held a lot of weight for most people for reasons. Would likely be the place with the most population and infrastructure for the region.
Yicuqibu: Despite being a breathable atmosphere (I assume with just enough oxygen for a 1.54g world to be the same on a 1g world), its more a desert planet with a high gravity. So the only think of interest there would be mining that asteroid and wanting to prove to everyone else they are the best survivalist. But with that news story about two freighters from there delivering food from a desert world, maybe there is a habitable space station(s) in support of any mining operations in the system that specializes in hydroponics.
Arzank: Since I have had eyes on expanding into the system, I might as well remark on it as well. Considering that civilization remnant on one of their worlds and not much else of interest in the system, any colonial development like comes around that frontier starport in relation to mining operations. Not likely to be massive with boom/bust like settlements dotting the planet.

As for my neck of the stars, I decided to colloquially call it the Fujiko Region. But there hasn't been anything officially done to make it legal beyond that, so they are technically under the Samurai Military Sector. As for population numbers, use 2 million for Fujiko, 500,000 for Rufusland (should still be fairly low since it is an industrial system), and 18 million for Ukmirt (people want to get awat from Fujiko) as your starting numbers. Still ranked near the bottom compared to the Core, Bard Cluster, and Motoyoshi Colonial Sector. Those are from the orginal articles before I updated them.

Ketsurui Military Sector

Himiko and Hanako's Star are both to my understanding still under Kuvexian occupation. Scrapyard System was recaptured in YE 43. No population data at all. However, my sense is that they are fairly populated.

Motoyoshi Colonial Sector

Asura, Hici'emi, Jiyuu, Kotoku, Lor, Nyli, Yuujou have population data.

Koukotsu included future population growth. With that included their population is 326,793,973.

Tange mentions that a planet has a few thousand people on it, but also mentions signifigant numbers of others.

Gensou, Mitsuya, Miyamae, Shugosha, Siren and do not have population data.

Fujiko Region

Demibear has provided population data for Fujiko, Rufusland, and Ukmirt.

Other

Ayano, Mwigflukbajik, Sharie, and Shurista have population data.

Ake, HX-2, Miu, Xyainbor, YC-04-Proclycon System does not have population data.

I think Miu is currently under occupation.

Saiki Cluster

Daichi and SX-07 have population data through a planet. SX-07 should probably be renamed to Minato.

SX-03, SX-05, SX-06 don't have population data.

Samurai Military Sector

Valentine does have population data.

Arzank, Jun, Virgina, and Veronica don't have population data.

---

There are 24 places without population data. The list of places that don't have population data is Murf, Tsuyosa, Yicuqibu, Hanako's Star, Himiko, Scrapyard System, Gensou System, Mitsuya, Miyamae System, Shugosha System, Siren System, Tange System, Ake, HX-2, Miu, Xyainbor, YC-04-Proclycon System, SX-03, SX-05, SX-06, Arzank, Jun, Virginia, and Veronica.

There are some places where I can infer a rough guesses at population. (although if I'm guessing, I'm probably going high)

I don't know if I've missed any Yamataian systems. There are a few where I question if Yamatai claims them. Mwigflukbajik and some of the systems that seem to basicly only have been explored for example.

In terms of data collection, some systems aren't on the big automatic list for various reasons. The most common being that their Faction struct is set to a faction other than Yamatai. (ex Hidden Sun Clan).

On a random tangent, I think that Elysia and Abwehran need to be something other than empires. We may need a subfaction stuct as well becuase 87 is a very big long list, that said having them all in different factions is fine if we remember that when we pull the struct data.

Don't think Miu was ever occupied, just raided.

Hanako’s Star was liberated in YE 45. The RP is still ongoing. The world will likely be moved per Yui’s wishes but we will see how that ultimately pans out.

Don’t worry about it or mess with the system, the details will be taken care of by the responsible parties (me) when the time comes.

So just don’t for now like the post said.

Also, the IC details of this supposed census are flawed. It mentions taxation or taxes a few times when one of Yamatai’s oldest laws explicitly forbids taxation. Just as one example. It is difficult to take this effort seriously when most of its new content is inaccurate or attempts to retcon things out of nowhere.
