The Value of Gold & Other Assorted Resources?

So, recently, in the SCSC giveaway, my character Jax came into possession of a tractor trailer full of gold. In our standards, we would be set for life, and so would our children. But as I understand it, the Yamataian government is able to produce unlimited quantities of gold using aether generators.

So, is it worth trying to sell the gold? How much would I make from it?

Secondly, what about lumber? I sill have a few thousand wooden carts I'll never use.

You can make gold almost as easily as any other element in SARP. It does have value but more as a material than as a currency.

Aluminium used to be more expensive than gold. We can now days make it fairly easily so the material is cheap and common.

In Yamatai this gold wouldn't be worth that much but if you take it to a world still on the gold standard you'd be a king!

This is Zack telling everyone to come to the 188604 system to shower third-world third-worlders with your easily replicated junk.

Nepleslia is at a similar tech level to Yamatai, though resources per person are more scarce so I'd imagine it'd be worth a bit more.

You could honestly probably sell it back to SCSC. There's also little harm in sending an IC communique to companies to see if they're interested in buying or trading your raw resources for KS or their products.

I feel like gold has to be at least a little valuable in Yamatai. Like, the ceremonial NSP and Hanako's custom one are both gold plated, and why do that if it's a worthless thing?

Gold is a very unique metal that is basically naturally perfect for use as currency. I would imagine all cultures a cross the universe would consider it valuable as orinmentation for that reason alone, even if gold itself is cheap to get.

So, I did the math, assuming that the tractor trailer was filled to capacity, because it didn't state that exactly how much gold was in there. I calculated the volume of the trailer, which came out to roughly 337.5 cubic feet. Then, I multiplied that by 1,204 lbs, the weight of one cubic foot of gold, which gave me 406,350 lbs of gold. Divided that by 16 to make 25,396.87 ounces. Multiply that by the our current value of $1,302 for ounce, and I came to the astounding conclusion that Jax is sitting on over $33M worth of metal.

I'm not quite sure that the trailer could even hold 400,000 pounds, but hey, sci-fi! Also, I always just assumed that all currency in the SARP universe was pretty much equal in value to the American dollar.

Did I screw up anywhere?

I'd wager a full container is full only to its weight limit.

I would also expect that a large amount of what is in the container is packing material and tie downs to keep the load from shifting during transport.

Maybe cut down the amount of gold inside by 30-50%? I don't really see anything wrong with your math.

Gemini Six-One also received a SSCC-XL containing gold, it had a more detailed description and specified it contained exactly 40 metric tons. That's only 88,000 lbs, not 400,000, which might be more practical. Like, a particularly buff semi truck might actually be able to haul it, for example; they usually have a maximum load of around 80,000 lbs.

An SSCC-XL is actually almost 4000 cubic feet, not 340, though. I'm not sure how you got that number, that's less than the square footage of any of the long sides of the trailer.

Gold should definitely be less valuable in the SARP universe, but aside from being pretty, it still has a lot of applications in building electronics and other industrial applications, and should be worth more than steel... if you can find anyone with a reason to buy so much of it.

The Star Army of Yamatai will give you at least 2 million KS per metric ton but you probably shouldn't sell your 40 tons to the Star Army directly because that gold is almost certainly already Star Army property that was lost in battle or by theft and you don't want them asking questions about where it came from.

Well since the title says gold and other assorted resources I gotta ask about the price of Rhenium. Is there any SARP nation that would really care about it much or has it essentially become obsolete?

My mewser has a container with a capacity of 112.5 cubic meters containing it.
1 cubic meter of Rhenium is 21000 kilograms
21000 kilos multiplied by its average price per kilo of $2750 in 2015 is $57,750,000.

Is it worth even 0.1% of that in SARP?

I've got:
  • 270 x Handsaws
  • 182 x Hardwood, highly-quality wooden desks
if this is where we're going to ask about prices it would be really nice to know how much an NPC would pay for these, seeing as no PC seems to need it
