RP: YSS Wakaba [YSS Wakaba] Episode 3: The Scenic Route Home.

Runa
As she heard her captain speaking to her, Runa practically squealed as she cheered. “Alright Runa! lets go say hello to the future dead guys, and then win prizes! man I gotta say I like Thomas!” she said to herself, “you know what.. I’m gonna adopt him!” she said then grinned. as she prepared herself for when she and the other fighters were ordered to move out.

Calandri paused for a moment as she tried to work out what those word meant as a sentence, she remember that SAOY used other names for things as unit names and that. She had heard of what angels of death were and she thought about it a little more. She quickly saluted though as she stammered "O-oh sorry, I should have saluted before, but the name what does it entail, the Shovosha where angels that came and collected the souls of the dying, but I doubt this has anything to do with those myths, or is it more like the hunters of Kav?" She had forgotten who she was talking to and that her words would mean little to them. She paused to breath but didn't realise her mistake as she looked at the person in front of her, her eyes had a sheen to them "oh I am sorry ma'am, I should have asked at what it entailed and not just assumed what it was."

Setsunu smiled and waved her hand for Calandri to relax. "It's ok. I'm not an officer." She studied Calandri a moment then repeated the word she had used. "Shovosha." It had a nice sound to it. And it was a very accurate description. "I think that is a pretty good description as to what the Angels of Death are. We are a squad of warriors who bring death to our enemies." Setsunu stood, leaning her cello against the wall and taking up her spear, Kuronosu. Her manner was one confidence and ability and her movements were graceful with no waisted effort. "I won't lie, it is a dangerous assignment. The Angels are often at the front of the hardest fights. But I think you would fit in very well." Setsunu pointed with her spear at a PA suit along the wall. It was huge, with four arms instead of two. It looked a little thrown together. "If you are in, please suit up. We may be called to battle soon. I'm assured by the armorer that the suit will work, but you'll need to be mindful that there are some weak spots around the joints but we made the best we could."

YSS Wakaba

NMX Neko Arta moved cautiously through the ship. Things had taken a very interesting turn. From what she was able to gather, the Wakaba had somehow discovered one of the NMX shipyards. That was unfortunate. Although the shipyard was well defended, a Sharie-Class Battleship could still do a good bit of damage to the station, setting production back by months, if not longer. She would need to act fast. Arta was a truly talented infiltrator. She had a plan that would destroy the morale of the entire ship at once, resulting in its surrender. Her master would be most pleased. Overseer, no Master Overseer Arta. She smiled as she set her plan in motion.

Bridge

Thomas paced around the bridge, stopping at each station to check the status of that station. Naturally he could have just remained in his own command chair and seen the status of each station, but he wanted to check on the operators of each station. A quick word was all that was needed. They were good to go. Thomas returned to his captain’s chair. The time to target was less than 2 minutes. The big Nepleslian tapped his pipe against the arm rest. It was empty, but he didn’t refill it.

Power Armor Bay

Setsunu tied her long green hair into a long braid then maneuvered it around so that she could get her helmet on securely. She had no need to run a diagnostic on her suit, Setsunu was the suit. Her type 33A mind was made to be the power source and the processer of her Power Armor. Although she usually kept her Mindy with the power source intact. That way she could preform micro teleport jumps faster and more often by using both her suits and the ones built into her own body. She did a comms check to her other Angels. “Angel One to Angels of Death. Report it.

The reports came in quickly yet were all too few. The Angel’s were down 5 of their normal 12 squad size. But Calandri made up for that as the tall alien worked to get into her Mindy suit. Joto Heisho Haruka, Angel 2, was pacing the armor bay, looking like she might lash out at any moment and Setsunu could sympathize. Angel 3, Itto-Heisho Michiru, had not reported in. She was on the shuttle that had been unknowingly sent to investigate the NMX shipyard. Haruka and Michiru were both very close, being batch sisters. They also had served together throughout their entire carriers and were the other founding members of the Angels of Death.

Deck 15

Arta gathered her coconspirators. Over the past month she had carefully infected 4 members of the Wakaba. She would have preferred more, but she had run out of time. She would make do with what she had. “As soon as the ship exits hyperspace, you know what to do.” Her Mishhu parasite infected cohorts nodded. They were heavily armed, but that wasn’t too much out of the ordinary on the Wakaba. Especially as they were about to enter a battle.

Space

The Wakaba exited hyperspace. Immediately she began launching around 100 Mindy suits which moved quickly around the Battleship to act as a fighter screen. The Angels of Death were among them, forming up around the Wakaba’s most vulnerable points. The Wakaba already had suffered badly against borders before, and no one was anxious for a repeat of that. Another 50 suits waited in reserve in the hanger, the weak point of the ship. The rest of the PA suits were spread around the ship, mostly guarding the most critical locations such as the bridge and the engines but also the med bays and food storages. Supplies were low enough without wanting to risk those.

Bridge

On the bridge was organized chaos. Sensors and readings were flooding the screens as contact after contact after contact came back. The operators were hurrying to update the tactical display. Thomas sat with his eyes closed, listening to the reports as they came in. There were a lot. His brows furrowed as he caught pieces of what was being scanned. Within minutes, however, the traffic cleared, and a semi accurate picture of the area appeared on his screen.

Thomas looked at it and felt his pulse quicken. In the middle of the system, orbiting a planet was a space station and a shipyard. The shipyard was round central dome with long tendrils coming off of it. The dome itself had to be at least half a kilometer in circumference. The tendrils varied in length. Some were long and spread into multiple veins with a variety of ships attached to them, from gunships to large frigates. Another arm had at least a dozen cruisers attached to it. Some were obviously still under construction, but the majority looked as if they were close to completion.

But it was the other side of the station that caught Thomas’ attention and made his blood run cold. A shorter arm with 5 disks attached to it. Each ‘disk’ was wider than the Wakaba was long. The thing looked cruel and something out of a nightmare. Very Mishhu indeed. Scanners could find no matches for it in any of Wakaba’s vast data banks. Nothing even remotely close. “So, they’re building some new toys, are they? We’ll just see about that.

Thomas turned his attention away from the shipyard to the rest of the area. There were several ships patrolling the area. Light cruisers and other smaller fast attacking ships but some heavier, harder hitting cruisers as well. The system was less heavily defended than Thomas would have imagined an NMX shipyard would be. Maybe they kept less ships in the area so it wouldn’t be as detectible? That would certainly explain why they hadn’t picked up anything until they were closer. Of course, the Wakaba’s scanners were not the most reliable at the moment. Thomas would lay money down that they had a heavy reinforcement nearby that would probably already be on their way there.

The Wakaba alone couldn’t handle everything there, even if they were at 100%. But they couldn’t just allow a NMX Shipyard of this size to continue to pump out ships. A quick hit and run. Zoom in guns blazing, do as much damage as they can and then get the hell out of there. And a Sharie could do quite a bit of damage.

Haruto, plot me the most direct course. We’re going to do a fly by then run like smoke and oakum.“ His cousin Jack would have loved his reference. “Helm, I need you to fly Wakaba as if she were a Plumeria gunship. Fast and nimble. Weapon’s station.” Thomas smiled. “I want those heavy turrets firing as fast as they can. Starboard size, target the patrol ship and any part of the station that come in view. Larboard batteries, primary target is those… ships their building. I want them reduced to molten slag. Then the stations’ tendrils sever them from the hub. Any gunner who misses will be demoted. And arm those Ke-Z3 Series Ransā Torpedoes. Target the space station and the shipyard hub itself.” Thomas called up Engineering. “I want you to redline the engines. We need all the speed we can get.

YSS Wakaba

The Wakaba flew towards the shipyard it’s engines burning bright. As it came into range 24 of its 28 Ke-B3-W3100 Superheavy Turrets opened fire. Space lit up like Funky city on Nepleslia prime. Lines of destructive Aether energy went shooting towards it’s targets, touched them briefly then erupted in explosions. Almost at once every ship and weapon in the system began targeting the Wakaba. The speed at which the Sharie went made it difficult for the enemy ships to get a lock on them. Any shot that did manage to score a hit was being deflected by the shields, so far. But it couldn’t last forever.

Bridge

Thomas stood in front of his chair, watching everything going on around him. The display screens, the readouts, his crew, he saw it all. There was no time for doubt. All they could do was go in with both broadsides blazing. “Turret 8 has blown it’s coil.” Inaho reported. “The shipyard is proving tougher than we thought but the stress fractures are beginning to show in other places.” She paused a moment as an alarm began to flash. “We have new contacts. 3 cruisers just entered the system. They’re pretty far out though but they may try to cut off our escape.” Inaho advised.

We’ll deal with it when the time comes. Contiue to monitor them. We…” Thomas was thrown to the floor as the ship was rocked. A shot had made it through the shields. Damage control began assessing the damage. Inaho helped Thomas to his feet. “We’re in the middle of it now Captain.” Thomas nodded. They were indeed.

Deck 10

Arta moved towards the MEGAMI core room. It had taken longer than she had expected but she was close now. With everything going on she had been able to pass unnoticed. Before her were the doors leading to the MEGAMI’s core. They were guarded by two Mindy suits. It would take too long to fight them and the alarm would certainly be sounded if she tired. But she had another plan. Arta headed to the adjacent hallway and accessed a control outlet. There she uploaded her device.

At first nothing seemed to happen. Then the program began to take effect. The Star Army had some of the finest firewalls and counter hacking programs in the Galaxy. But the Mishhu had had a long time to plan. The virus began attacking the MEGAMI directly but that was just the decoy. The real attack was far more subtle. It was going after the ST files. Every crew member on the ship had a backup made so in case of their death they could be brought back. The ST files were sacred and highly protected. A most tempting prize. The lost of the ST files would break the Wakaba’s moral faster than a fleet of ships and an army of Rippers. It would not be long now.

Bridge

Thomas smiled. The shipyard was heavily damaged. Those horrific looking things that gave him such shivers were just hulks of molten, twisted metal now. The station had fractured in several places and secondary explosions were continuing to blossom along the structure. But the patrol ships were coming up fast. They’d be in range soon. “I think we may have worn out our welcome. Helm get us out of here. Make for the system’s edge with all speed.

A chorus of Aye-Aye answered him. Thomas looked at the tactical screen. There would be a few minutes where the outer patrol would get some shots off on them, but it didn’t look as if anything else in the system could stop them. They were actually going to get away with it.

Suddenly the MEGAMI’s avatar appeared on Thomas’ command chair armrest. The ship’s AI appeared as a samurai warrior. “Captain, we have intruders! Someone is uploading a virus that is attacking me. My firewall is holding it out but it…Wakaba’s avatar blurred and went out for a moment before returning. “It’s attacking the…” It went out altogether. Before Thomas could react an alarm began to sound and one of the bridge crew cursed. “Ca..ca..Captain.

Thomas looked up. “Oh Sacred Feth.” Another ship had arrived in the system. Their old acquaintance, the Vubrakshurrothhurl Dreadnaught. Well things just got interesting… Again.

YSS Wakaba

Deck 10

It was working. Arta’s virus had broken through the ship’s firewall and was corrupting the ST backups. Just then a device in her pocket began to beep. So her Lord was in the system. Now was the time for the next part of her plan. Warrior and the Lord Mishhu had been most specific about that. They wanted to capture the commander, alive. Warrior also wanted that warrior she had fought against, Setsunu Meiosei. Arta pulled a comm out and sent a signal to her cohorts. They were in position to blow one or the Wakaba’s shield relays. It wouldn’t take down the entire ship’s shields, just enough for a strike team to teleport onto the ship. She activated the locator to give the strike team a point to jump safely.

Bridge

Thomas looked at the tac display grimly. That big bastard ship was right in their way. It was trying to block their escape and drive them back into the system. If they did that, they would be dead. He also needed to figure out what was going on with the MEGAMI. Before he could send a team to investigate yet another alarm began howling.

Starboard shield relay #7 just went down!” the damage control reported, confused. “But we weren’t hit.” Thomas looked at the readout also puzzled by what had happened. Just as it clicked in his mind one of the other operators called out. “Captain, we’ve been boarded! Hostiles just appeared on deck 10!

Sets!” Thomas sent a direct message wirelessly to Setsunu. “Hostiles on Deck 10. I need it contained. Stat!” “Acknowledge.” Was the only reply.

Thomas pushed that problem from his mind and focused on the massive one in front of him. Mighty as a Sharie was it was no match for that Dreadnaught. If Wakaba’s main guns were operational maybe they could damage it enough to get away but those guns had been destroyed when the Wakaba had first gone missing. If only…

Helm!” Thomas called down into the pit of the bridge. “Pressurize all the maneuvering thrusters on the Starboard size to max. Wakaba.” Thomas addressed the ships AI. “Leave the virus for now. It won’t matter anyway if the ship is destroyed. Scan that dreadnaught. When it fires, blow all the Starboard thrusters. Master Gunner. Retarget our remaining Ransa Torpedo on that Dreadnaught. Fire amid ship.” Thomas felt strangely calm. Either they would pull this off or they would all be blown up.

Deck 10

Joto Hei Endo cursed as she took cover behind a bulkhead. How had a dozen Rippers suddenly teleported into the middle of the ship? Her squad was doing their best to contain the boarders, but it was going badly. Half her squad was already dead and she had no way of knowing if the Rippers were even still contained. “Keep up the fire! We need…” The Mindy standing on the opposite side of bulkhead door suddenly screamed. Before Endo could react a Ripper had burst forward and cut her in two with it’s blade. Endo began to turn her rifle around to shoot the Ripper but a second one bashed her with a mace and sent the Neko flying across the room. She hit the wall hard and fell to the ground, fighting to remain conscious. The Ripper moved over and stomped its foot on her chest, knocking the wind out of her. Standing over her it raised its mace to finish her off. This is it. Endo thought. She closed her eyes, waiting for the blow.

There was a loud bang and suddenly the crushing weight on her chest was gone. She could hear the sounds of metal on metal and that hiss of Aether cutting through something. She glanced up and saw two Mindy suits. One was wielding a huge sword and going toe to toe with a Ripper. The other had a spear in her hands. At least it looked like a spear. It was moving too fast to really be sure what it was but wherever it was had hacked to pieces the Ripper that had been standing over her.

Once both Rippers were destroyed the Mindy with the sword went charging down the hall towards the rest of the fighting. The one with the spear turned and looked down at Endo. Endo suddenly realized who it was. The Lady of Death. “Report please.” Said Sestunu sounding as if she had all the time in the world and she was waiting for the duty log. “We were called to investicate a potential security breach of the MEGAMI. Before we could even get there at least a dozen Rippers suddenly teleported in and we’ve been fighting to contain them since then. We…Look out!

Before Endo could finish saying ‘out’ Setsunu had spun her spear around like a majorette in a marching band and held the weapon against her hip, blade pointed behind her. The blade suddenly glowed then shot a beam of Aether energy down the hall at the Ripper coming towards them. The beam hit the Ripper in the head, temporarily blinding it but not doing any serious damage. Before it could recover Setsunu had run forward and hacked off its arm, dodged a kick and moved around behind it where she ran her blade clean through it’s back so that the tip of her spear stuck out the Ripper’s chest. Endo was reminded why Setsunu was known as the Lady of Death.

Other reinforcements came running up the hall to them. Setsunu waved them forward towards the sound of the fighting. She then coordinated with the other squads in the area to drive the Rippers away from the MEGAMI. The Mindy with the big sword came back up to her as the other squads ran past. “I think they’re heading for the Bridge.” Said Jotto Heisho Haruka, Angel 2. Setsunu was silent a moment as she processed the situation. “I agree, but the others will have to handle it. Someone is hacking the MEGAMI. We need to stop that.

Atra smiled. Things couldn’t be going better. Her Lord had received her signal and had acted immediately. A strike team of a dozen Rippers lead by Warrior had appeared within moments of the shields going down. The Rippers had immediately gone to work causing damage and confusion throughout the ship. Arta had quickly given Warrior a report. She had been most pleased. Two Rippers had remained behind with Warrior and one of them suddenly raised it’s weapon and began firing. Everyone turned to look at what it was firing at when there were two loud bangs and a bright flash behind them. Haruka swung her massive sword and became engaged with one Ripper. Setsunu moved forward to attack the other but the sight of Warrior she moved over to engage her.

Warrior had Setsunu had fought before, several months ago when the Wakaba had first been lost and attacked. Setsunu had never fought against anyone so fierce and skilled before and knew that Warrior was the most dangerous enemy on the ship at the moment. The fight was as intense as it was fast. Blades slicing through the air so quickly they whistled. Between Warrior and the two Rippers it was all Haruka and Setsunu could do to not be overwhelmed. Everyone had received hard blows but none that had slowed them down.

During a lull in the battle, Warrior spoke. “I am glad to have found you again. Never have I had such a fight as our last one. You can imagine my joy when we destroyed a shuttle and captured a Mindy suit with your ‘Angel of Death’ badge. And my disgust when I learned it wasn’t you. Still Itto-Heisho Michiru provided good sport.

That was too much for Haruka. She and Michiru were batch sisters and very close. With a scream Haruka rushed forward, Setsunu right behind her. The already rapid fight intensified. It was just a matter of time before someone made a mistake. When it happened, it happened fast. Setsunu had blocked a fatal stab but couldn’t perry the Ripper blow to her head. Her helmet crumpled from the blow, and she fell back against the wall. Haruka had jumped over to protect the dazed Setsunu and had managed to finally land that killing blow on one of the Rippers but Warrior struck and her blade pierced through Haruka’s armor. It was a fatal blow. Haruka slumped to the ground, but not before pulling a grenade from her belt and activating it. She held it out at arm’s length, keeping her body between the grenade and Setsunu. The explosion seriously damaged the remaining Ripper and pushed Warrior away.

Setsunu sat up and removed damaged helmet. Her face was badly bruised. She crawled over to where Haruka lay. Gently she removed her friend’s helmet and held her in her arms. Haruka was dead. Tears began to form in Setsunu’s eyes. First Michiru, now Haruka. Her dearest friends. Never had Setsunu felt so lost.

If you surrender now, I promise you will not be tortured or used as a Mishhu breeder. I...” Warrior began. “Silence.” Setsunu interrupted. She stood, her hair hanging down her back in a tight braid, still immaculate despite the fierce fight. She held out her hand and her spear flew to her. She spun it around then charged.

Bridge

Fire!” Thomas ordered. “Firing Torpedo one! Torpedo away!” A light began to glow on the Dreadnought. “Wakaba get ready to…” There was sudden explosion along the ship’s Starboard side as the overcharged maneuvering thrusters detonated, throwing the ship to Port. At the same moment the lance of destructive energy shot from the Dreadnought and went right through were the Wakaba had just been. There had been no time to warn the ship to brace so crew all over the ship were thrown to the bulkhead like rag dolls, resulting in a slew of minor injuries and broken bones.

Helm get us out of here! Navigation, jump the ship as soon as we are clear of system!” Thomas ordered from the floor where he had fallen. A junior officer helped him to his feet. He watched the tactical screen, trying to find where the torpedo was. Had it been hit by defense turrets? Suddenly the side Dreadnought blossomed in a huge ball of destructive energy. The bridge crew cheered. Thomas managed a smile. He knew that there was little chance of the single torpedo destroying the dreadnought, but it should give them time to get the hell out of there.

Deck 10

Warrior had been hurt. Hurt bad. Setsunu had also received several wounds that should have been fatal to a regular human. Even a Neko wasn’t that tough. But Setsunu fought on with the same grace and fiercely that she always did. There was a moment’s lull with both combatants breathing hard and trying to catch their breath. Suddenly Warrior growled as if she was very angry. “Once again you have proven to be stronger than we thought. I have been recalled. We will fight again. Of that I am sure.” She saluted Setsunu then disappeared.

The Wakaba made it to the edge of the system and jumped to hyperspace. Once again they had defied all odds and lived to fight another day. But at what cost?

YSS Wakaba: One week later

The Wakaba made another short jump into hyperspace. The ship had made dozens of jumps over the past week. Trying to put as much distance between themselves and the Mishhu base. They had gotten off relatively unscratched, at least as far as structural damage. Moral had been through the roof, briefly. They had taken out a NMX shipyard, destroyed enemy battleships being built as well a dozen smaller ships not yet complete. Best of all, they had hit and hit hard an Dreadnaught. Some speculated that they had destroyed it and that added to the feeling of invincibility. Thomas didn't believe they had destroyed it. Hurt, yes, but he believed that they would be seeing it again.

Then the rumors had started. Thomas had done everything to keep it from spreading but it was inevitable. After 3 days it became unavoidable. He was forced to address the crew. The rumors were true. The MEGAMI had been hacked and although it was still functioning, all of the ST backups had been corrupted. Not only that, the whole ST system on the ship had been damaged beyond repair. They couldn't revive anyone who had been killed and they couldn't make new ST's for those who were left. The Moral that had been so high plummeted to the lowest it had been since the ship was first lost. There was a lot of unrest and even some talk of a mutiny. Thomas tried to keep the crew busy fixing the ship, keep them from having too much time to think about their problems. He and his officers worked non stop. There was no rest.

In a 24 hour day Thomas maybe got 2 hours of sleep. He would move to the office just off the bridge and grab an hour or two in his chair before the MEGAMI would wake him again. After five days of this Thomas knew something must change. They were still very low on supplies and they needed to find at least a habitable world or even better a friendly civilization. Anything to improve moral and give the crew some new hope.

On the sixth day after the fight of the shipyards, Thomas ordered a rest. The whole ship needed it. He had the cooks make up something special for the crew, despite low rations. Even Thomas was going to get some rest. He ordered the bridge to only alert him in case of an emergency and headed for his cabin.

In his cabin Thomas undid his uniform shirt and sat down heavily at his desk. He opened a drawer and pulled out a bottle of whiskey and a glass. He poured himself a drink and knocked it back in one gulp. The fire water burned his throat as it went down. He sighed. He wasn’t sure what he was going to do. He started to pour another glass when his door binged, indicating someone was there.

Thomas grunted. “I left instructions not to be disturbed.

I know.” Setsunu replied as the door opened. “I just needed to get my cello.” Thomas managed to smile. “Sure sure. We haven’t had any music in a while, have we?” He rubbed his eyes tiredly.

How are you holding up Thomas?” Setsunu asked. Thomas looked up at Setsunu. She very rarely used his name while on duty. She was always very professional. He took another sip of his drink. “I can’t remember a time when I’ve been this tired.” He confessed. It wasn’t just physical exhaustion. It was mental and emotional as well. “Maybe some music?” He suggested. “I doubt I could play for very long but anything to help my brain to relax.” Setsunu nodded. “Of course.

They got out their instruments. Thomas his violin and Setsunu her cello. They didn’t bother with their music stands. For one Setsunu had all the music sheets stored in her neko mind and had no need to read physical music. Thomas on the other hand preferred reading music, but wasn’t planning on playing that much. He was too tired. They would just play some of their favorites, the ones they both knew by heart.

They began to play. As they played, Thomas could feel his body beginning to relax. Stress was just melting off of him. They had only been playing a few minutes when Setsunu suddenly played a wrong note. Thomas stopped playing in shock. He had never heard her play a wrong note before. He was on the verge of making a joke about how tired she must be to make a mistake when he noticed the tears running down her face. “Sets?” Thomas asked with concern.

She continued to cry silently. Thomas wasn’t sure if she was even capable of crying out loud. She was known as the Lady of Death because she fought with such grace and skill and never showed any emotion. Thomas set down his violin and moved over to her carefully moving her cello out of the way and holding her in his arms. Setsunu imminently buried face in his shoulder. Thomas could feel her body tremble as she just released all the emotions she had kept buried deep inside her.

After a few minuets she managed to calm down enough to speak. Still hiding her face against him she said, “Michiru and Haruka. They are both gone.” She shuttered. Michiru and Haruka had been Setsunu’s dearest friends. They had served together for years. Durning a particularly bad battle they had banded together and fought with distinction. None of them had been infantry at the time, yet they fought with a ferocity and skill that put veterans to shame. “Haruka died saving my life.

Thomas understood her pain. He had known Setsunu just as long as Michiru and Haruka, even longer really. Besides them, no one was closer to Setsunu than he was. They had a deep bond. Not lovers. They had tried that once and it hadn’t ended well. But the circumstances were different now. Now they were in a dire situation. The hope of making it back home was growing less and less by the day. They need each other more than ever.

They stood still holding on to one another. They looked at one another, their faces a mere inch apart. Afterwards, neither one is sure who made the first move. The next thing they knew their lips had met and a flood of passion overwhelmed them. All the stress and fatigued and emotions that they had been holding in, not just during the last few months, but over the last few years had reached the boiling point and had ruptured.

Thomas woke up. He was lying in his bed. His cybernetics told him that 5 hours had passed. For a moment he couldn’t remember what had happened. Then he heard music playing. The deep notes of a cello. He looked over the side of the bed and saw Setsunu. She was wearing one of his shirts and nothing else. “Sets?” Thomas asked as it call began coming back to him. She smiled at him. That rare and beautiful smile that he had always loved seeing. “Hello.” She said simply. She was practically glowing. Thomas smiled in return as he sat up in bed. It felt like the world had been lifted off his shoulders. Yes, he was still captain of a Battleship and had the sole responsibility off her and her crew, but at this moment he wasn’t concerned about any of that. All that mattered to him was sitting over in that chair playing her cello.

He allowed his thoughts to wonder, thinking about what it might look like to have a family with Setsunu. Her being a Neko meant that if she had girls they’d grow really fast. What was it for nekos? 3 months pregnancy then another 3 months till they grew up? Thomas laughed. “What is so funny?” Setsunu asked. Thomas got a little red in the face, slightly embarrassed. “Nothing. I was just pondering Neko biology.” Setsunu raised an eyebrow at him. “Oh really?” Thomas reddened a little more. “No… I… I was just thinking about… Well… If…” Setsunu was still smiling and had a very amused look on her face. “Go on.” She encouraged. “I was just thinking about how quick Neko’s pregnancy and maturity is. It would only take about 6 months to…to…” Thomas stopped as the thought took hold. Setsunu got it quicker. “You’re saying that we could potentially replace vital crew members by encouraging the neko’s on the ship to have babies. We could potentially raise 200 to 400 new crew members in 6 months, which would greatly help with the workload.” She said it all matter of factly. But then she smiled mischievously. “Plus it would be great for moral. Staring a family would remind the crew what we’re fighting for.

Setsunu set her cello down and climbed onto the bed. She moved over to Thomas and kissed him. “And yes, I think we should have one as well.” Setsunu snuggled up close to him as he automatically wrapped his arm around her. “You know I’ve never wanted a relationship. I’m totally committed to the Star Army above all else. But we have no way of knowing when we’ll make it back to Yamatai, if ever.” She looked up at him. “But I love you, Thomas. I’ve always loved you. I know you have been in love with me since the moment we met but it has taken me a long time to realize that I have loved you too.

Thomas held her close and was about to speak when he was interrupted by the MEGAMI. “Captain. I realize that you are… Occupied. But our scanners have picked up a ship. A Star Army ship.” Before the ship could finish speaking both Setsunu and Thomas had jumped out of bed and were rapidly getting dressed. A Star Army ship? Had they really found a Star Army ship?

Bridge

Thomas ran onto the bridge with Setsunu right behind him. He was still buttoning up his shirt, her uniform was immaculate, as if she was about to head to an admiral’s inspection. “What have we got?” He asked. Inaho shrugged sounding somewhat defeated. “We’re not sure. Scans initially indicated a Star Army ship. But further scans show a somewhat bleaker picture. It’s an Elysian Panopteles gunship. It’s mostly destroyed. The whole front of the ship is gone. That includes the bridge so we couldn’t extract any data from there. Looks like it’s been lost in space for a while.

Thomas looked at the scans. It wasn’t encouraging. “We need to check it out. There might be supplies aboard or other valuable information aboard.” He turned to Setsunu. “Get team together and investigate that ship. Make sure it isn’t a trap. If you find anything valuable onboard we’ll attach it to the flight deck. Go!” Setsunu saluted and left. As she left, she sent a private message to Thomas. We’ll pick up where we left off when I get back. Thomas’ face turned a little red again.

Aboard derelict ship

Setsunu led her team aboard the abandoned ship. Her Angels of Death were down to half a squad. It was like a cup of cold water in Setsunu’s face after the love making to Thomas. But she took it in her stride. It didn’t take long to inspect the ship. They did find some food supplies and some of the ship could be used for spare parts. Then Setsunu found something of great interest. It was a stasis pod. There was still power running to it. Someone was alive in there. Setsunu reported it in and requested that XO Fletcher and medic Valdia to prepare to thaw the pod.

Valdia had everything set up when Setsunu arrived with the stasis pod. Setsunu remained in the room as Valdia and Fletcher prepared to open the pod. If for some reason the occupant was hostile, she would deal with it. She stood by the door, out of the way, with her spear in her hand.

Fletcher looked over the pod, the person inside was alive, he ran a scan to see more details about their physical status. He felt they could be awakened. "Valdia, let's prepare to thaw the pod. Hopefully they will be able to tell us something about what happened to the ship." He told her.

Valdia nodded, "Yes, Sir." She said, looking over the controls and getting familiar with how the older unit worked. "I'm ready."

"Good, let's do it." Fletcher said, starting the warming process to bring them out. The first thing they would see is Fletcher's Star Army uniform, hopefully that would be enough.

The cover slid away and as they became aware of their surroundings Fletcher introduced himself. "Hello, I'm Shosa Fletcher."

Yss Wakaba

Runa, the Mini Neko pilot, moved swiftly through the corridors of the YSS Wakaba, her small stature belying the seriousness of her mission. Her cat-like ears twitched as she eavesdropped on the hushed conversations among the crew. The rumors of MEGAMI being hacked spread like wildfire, sending ripples of concern throughout the starship.

As she continued her checks on the shuttles and fighter starships, Runa couldn't shake off the weight of the news. The ST backups corrupted, the entire ST system damaged beyond repair—this was a crisis of unprecedented magnitude. The very core of their ability to navigate through space, revive fallen comrades, and create new STs was compromised.
Her thoughts turned to Thomas Canterbury, the human acting captain whom she had adopted as her son. Runa knew that Thomas held a special place in her heart, and the idea of him facing such a dire situation concerned her deeply. The ship, now stranded far beyond the Yamatai Star Empire's control, added an extra layer of complexity to an already precarious scenario.

Runa pondered her next move. The situation demanded immediate action and a careful approach. She needed to find out more details about the extent of the damage and figure out if there were any possible solutions. The fate of the crew, including Thomas, hung in the balance, and Runa was determined to do everything in her power to help them navigate through this crisis.

With a determined expression on her face, Runa continued her rounds, her mind racing with thoughts of how to address the challenges that lay ahead. The YSS Wakaba and its crew were in uncharted territory, both figuratively and literally, and Runa understood that they needed to pull together to overcome this unprecedented threat.

As Runa continued her tasks, the anger within her simmered. The decision to join the Star Army, a choice she hadn't made willingly, gnawed at her. Her adoptive parents, who couldn't have children of their own, had somehow managed to persuade the recruiters that her gang wasn't a criminal organization. It was a compromise she had made for the sake of those who had become her family, even if it meant being part of an institution she hadn't initially chosen.

Her thoughts circled back to Thomas, the human acting captain whom she had come to care for deeply. The current crisis only fueled her frustration. It was a situation that she, in her petite form, had never anticipated when she reluctantly became a part of the Star Army.

In an attempt to soothe her emotions, Runa affectionately petted Exyrus, her pet drake. The small creature, sometimes her loyal mount, provided her with a sense of companionship and comfort. The rhythmic movement of her hand on Exyrus's scales served as a grounding force amidst the chaos that enveloped the YSS Wakaba.

As she navigated the ship's corridors, the realization struck her—she might not have chosen this life, but circumstances had thrust her into a position where her skills and determination were crucial. The anger transformed into a steely resolve. If the MEGAMI was compromised, and the ship faced an uncertain future, Runa was determined to do everything in her power to ensure the safety of the crew, including Thomas, her adoptive parents, and all those who had become a part of her unconventional family within the Star Army.

With a herculean amount of effort - it felt as if he’d been climbing an endless (and completely unlit) staircase for the past eternity or three - the cornflower blue-paneled Type 35 Duty Uniform-clad Elysian male known as Machariel Valeria opened his hazel-hued eyes.

And immediately wished he hadn’t.

“If this is Hell, Satan, I’m thoroughly disappointed,” he said with a pronounced scowl as he gingerly - though pain and him were old, old friends, his entire form was extremely sore - rose from the stasis pod that he’d staggered into after…

…after…

…after what?

The frown marring the Patrician’s pale features somehow managed to deepen even further as he sat up with a wince. I remember running, and then a titanic explosion occurring, but… oh, whatever. It’s probably just a trick of the Devil, as I am in his infernal domain - though I was expecting much more fire, heat, and distant screams of the damned, given what’s mentioned in the Bible…

Calandri went over her Mindy as she mumbled under her breath, she had accepted this position and had learnt a bit more about them and was happy that they even considered a none native Yamataian to be part of the group. What she didn't like was the mindy, it wasn't that it was bad, it was a fine piece of tech, what she didn't like about it was it felt like it lagged, but others didn't feel this, she shrugged as she made her final checks and entered it, must be something a little different in how stuff connects.

She climbed into the suit and started to move, everything seemed fine, apart from the feeling that her movements were slower than her reflexes. She knew it wasn't bad but still a hunter should have all their abilities to fight. She lifted her head and nodded "Angel um..." She couldn't remember a number that she was given so rubbed the back of her head "Calandri ready for duty."

"Looks like its an Elysian." Valdia commented as the thawing continued and she got a read on the individuals bios. "Looks like he was pretty beat up before going into the pod. I'm detecting several minor injuries." Valdia kept a close eye on her monitors. This was their first contact with Yamatai in months although by the look of his ship he might have been out here longer than they had. Regardless, any potential news about where they were would be huge.

"He's a Patrician." Setsunu stated from over against the wall. Valdia turned around to look at the tall Joto Heisho then back at the pod. She was right. How had? "He's a warrior, his body type and the types of injuries he has is that of a warrior." Setsunu answered the unspoken question. She turned to the side as she received a communication from Calandri. She allowed a short smile to break her normally stoic face. "Angel 1 to Angel 8. The techs should be bringing in the derelict ship and attaching it to the our hall. Oversee security. I will join you shortly. Angel 1 out.

“Of course I’m a Patrician, you incredibly idiotic imp, and of course I was injured! I’m DEAD!” exclaimed Machariel, his features somewhere between anger and incredulity as he looked around the room. “I knew the forces of Satan were markedly inferior to the forces of the Lord, but I thought they’d at least be somewhat compete-“

The Patrician’s rant abruptly terminated off as he heard one of the lesser devils - whose appearance (that of an extremely attractive emerald-haired Nekovalkyrja) was obviously to entice Machariel into committing a sin or seven - mention something about retrieving a ‘derelict starship.’ Now why would the Devil need a starship? That makes zero sense, unless… no, that’s impossible, I’m definitely dead. Right…?

Fletcher had never really studied the Elysian religion, his brows furrowed for a moment. There seemed to be something missing here. "While I'm pretty sure there are some Misshu who might want to take you there, you are most certainly not in Hell thanks to modern medical technology. You are on a Star Army ship and are safe." There were a lot of asterisks on 'safe', but he didn't think Machariel needed to know that at the moment.

Valdia jumped a little when the Elysian shouted. She was glad that Setsunu was there. The Lady of Death, as she was known, was probably the toughest fighter on the ship. "You're certainly not dead. But you are pretty wounded. And from your comments, I think you might be hallucinating." Valdia added under her breath.

"On the contrary." Setsunu corrected. "Elysian's are very religious, Patrician's particularly. Naturally his thoughts would turn to the spiritual." The tall warrior eyed the Elysian as if she could see into his soul. "The fact that he believes he is in hell is telling. As the favored of his god, had he actually died he should be in paradise. But he believed that he was in Hell, the place were sinners and go for their sins. He obviously has done something atrocious for him to believe that he would not be in paradise." There was no accusation in Setsunu's tone, just a simple statement of the facts.

Setsunu received another communication from the recovery team. They had discovered the name of the ship. "Shosa Fletcher is correct. This is not Hell, although it could be described as purgatory at the moment. You are aboard the Yamatai Star Ship Wakaba. We found your ship, the Anoiktos, or rather what was left of it." Setsunu tone changed slightly. It had been more conversational and neutral, now it became more authoritative. "Now as the good doctors have stated, you are injured. Take a seat and let them tend to you while you share what you remember about how your ship became in the state it is in."

For a moment, Machariel seemed to settle down as he finally put two and two together…

The tall warrior eyed the Elysian as if she could see into his soul. "The fact that he believes he is in hell is telling. As the favored of his god, had he actually died he should be in paradise. But he believed that he was in Hell, the place were sinners and go for their sins. He obviously has done something atrocious for him to believe that he would not be in paradise."
…only to immediately erupt in righteous outrage moments later as he was accused of being a sinner. “I am not a sinner, you godless heathen!” he angrily snapped, springing up to full height - at 6’3”, a full four inches taller then Setsunu - with a wince as the aches and pain from his many injuries once again reared their ugly heads. “The only…” - the Patrician paused in an attempt to bring his temper (and pain) back under control - “…the only reason I mentioned Hell is because Heaven would only be populated by the Lord’s chosen, which you all are most certainly not.

Machariel shambled over to the nearest hospital bed and sat down on it with a grunt, the painful regret over his earlier rage-fueled movements plainly evident on his cream-colored features. “As for your second question, I don’t remember anything besides running, and then a massive explosion.”

The Archangel then folded his arms over his chest as the decidedly cross expression from before returned to his face. “And I’m still not wholly convinced that this isn’t Hell.”

"Well, that seems a bit exclusionary." Will commented, moving over to Machariel. He pulled up his file in the personnel database. He looked down at the Elysian, "We are nowhere near Yamatai at the moment, so your certainly not in hell. Like I said, this is the YSS Wakaba. If you could tell me about your ship, your career, whatever led up to the running and explosion, that would be helpful."

With a huff of annoyance and a thoroughly-annoyed look marring his features, Machariel finally acquiesced.

In theory.

“Very well, you person-who-is-probably-an-imp. I am Machariel Valeria, an infantryman serving onboard the YSS Anoiktos; our mission was to explore the Eudokia system for reasons beyond my knowledge - that’s a lie, of course, but the Devil doesn’t need to know EVERY little detail - and, as I stated mere moments previously you half-wit, I don’t remember what led up to the explosion.”

YSS Wakaba Med Bay

A certain amount of grace had been extended to the Elysian since he had just been unfrozen and was clearly dazed and confused. However the gross disrespect he showed by calling the XO a half-wit would not be tolerated by Setsunu. "Santo Hei Machariel Valeria." Setsunu's voice was loud, but it carried strength and authority. "I realize there is a lot for you to process at the moment but gross disrespect for a superior officer will not be tolerated aboard the Wakaba."

At that moment Thomas walked in. Whatever else Setsunu was going to say instantly changed to "Captain on Deck." as she snapped to attention. Thomas merely waved for those in the med bay to remain as they were. There was no reason for those sick or wounded to come to attention. Thomas was big man 6'2" and normally around 200lbs although recent stress and low rations had lost him some weight he was still a commanding figure, with his glowing red right eye with the dragon tattoo under it. He addressed Setsunu first. "Meiosei. Head out and make sure our guest's ship is secured. We'll be making another jump as soon as it's secured." Setsunu saluted then preformed a flourish with her spear before exiting the Med Bay.

Thomas looked at the Elysian. He had a thousand questions but thought it best to wait a moment. "I am Chusa Canterbury, acting Captain of the YSS Wakaba. How are you feeling young man?"

Outside the Wakaba

Setsunu arrived on the damaged ship. Techs were already securing it to the hold right by the hanger bay. The structural integrity of the Elysian ship was questionable so they were securing it there instead of one of the docking ports lower on the ship. It would make launching fighters difficult but the Wakaba had lost all but a handful of it's fighters and those few left were in no condition to fly just yet. Setsunu gathered her Angels around her. What was left of them anyway. "Stay on guard."

The sharp tone of Setsunu’s voice - plus the appearance of the Captain himself, whose speech, appearance, and mannerisms (and lack of accompanying flames, scent of brimstone and sulfur, and so on) most certainly did not match Satan’s descriptions in the holy scriptures - was enough to finally convince the man known as Machariel Valeria that he was, in fact, not in Hell. “My… apologies, Setsunu-Heisho,” he said with clear and present reluctance and embarrassment, given the blush that had crept across his features. Damnation, why do those infernal Nekovalkyrja have to be as attractive and tempting as succubi?

That said, the still-seated Patrician pivoted to face the Chusa - and, for the first time in quite literally years, performed a Yamataian salute… only to wince as his arm practically screamed in protest at the action. “Better, sir,” he said with an expression that was suddenly very, very tired and exhausted due to running out of adrenaline, “now that it’s belatedly occurred to me that this probably isn’t Hell, and that you probably aren’t Satan. How long was I in that stasis pod? A month? I’m surprised the Star Army” - and not the Elysians, he thought, though that’s to be expected given the pathetic state of our once-glorious navy - “was able to find me so quickly.”
