ON:

The two soldiers were standing in a very dark place, outside of an equally dark building. The back of it, at least, was that dark; off to the side, the L-shaped structure had a lamp in the bend projecting a pool of orange light over a door. That's not where the two soldiers would likely go, but it was up to them. The back of the building had two rolling doors and a single back door between them. It looked like the loading dock of a grocery store without the ramps.

The soldiers weren't at the back of a real building — it was a volumetric projection, as lifelike as everything else in the VR room, including the very warm wind brushing the hair of both soldiers.

"Now, you two," the voice of the VR simulation director said into their ear-mounted comm units. "Fifteen people inside. All are assailants. All must be killed. Race is unknown. Get in and do as you like. But don't fail."

Tsuya gripped her pistol firmly in both hands, pressing her back against the wall. She gestured with the weapon towards the loading doors, particularly towards the entrance in between them. "There."

Kaida frowned mildly at the pistol in her hands. She wasn't the best shot with it, and she honestly wished she had a rifle instead. That just meant that she had to rely on the element of suprise and trying to outmaneuver her opponent. Her violet eyes flickered between Tsuya and the door before nodding and taking position on the opposite end. "Any recon on what's the other side?" She was asking what they should likely do to find out what to expect beyond the door.

"None. No telepathy for now, in case." She tested the doorknob carefully with one hand, wondering if the small noise would alert anyone, hoping it wouldn't. "...should we try diplomacy?"

The director talked to both of them as they discussed their plan of attack. "Your Type 30 NSPs have LED flashlights and red lasers on them, and your eyes can see well enough in the dark. Don't expect your black body armor to save you; it's only rated to stop energy weapons, and we have no knowledge about what's on the other side." The turning of the handle stirred no one inside, as far as they could tell.

"No. You heard her. All must be killed. There's no reason for us to make more noise than necessary." Rather than point her pistol inside, she kept it pointed at the ground so as to not alert anyone inside with the laser flashing around.

Tsuya shook her head a bit, then twisted the handle, opening the door only enough to allow passage before she slipped in, gun pointed forward with the laser off. "Sh." She flicked her eyes around, surveying the interior of the building.

Kaida waited only for a second before crouching and moving in behind her, checking the opposite direction that Tsuya was.

In the dim light, the two Neko could see they were in a tall, mostly open room perhaps 35 meters wide and at least 10 meters tall. All the lights were off, but the two could see a red exit sign over a set of double doors on Tsuya's side. There was a fuzzy blob between them and the door; it appeared to be a vehicle of some sort. The rest of the area was empty, save for some discarded boxes in a corner on Kaida's side.

"...someone in that vehicle?" She gestured towards the fuzzy shape with her pistol.

"...Check." Kaida felt her nerves tense slightly. She slowly approached the vehicle, checking the area around her for any sudden movements at the same time. Once she reached the vehicle, she stayed crouched and quickly took a peek into the vehicle and quickly dropped her head back down in case someone was in there.

The vehicle, which had a low cab and a tall cargo bay, had no one in it.

"Clear..." Kaida whispered, she then proceeded to investigate the corners of the room, moving slowly and staying low. She wanted to make sure the room was completely clear.

Tsuya crouched down and moved towards the vehicle as well, pressing her back to it and using it for cover while she watched Kaida look for hostiles.

The room was indeed empty of people. The boxes made a tower that could not be penetrated, but nothing seemed to exist behind the front ones except more boxes. The other two corners had nothing but cobwebs.

"Room clear. No hostiles present." Despite Kaida's assessment, she still felt tense. Feeling a sense of unease, she looked up towards the ceiling, looking for anything like cameras or hidden panels.

"Ideas?" Tsuya asked.

All that appeared above them were old cardboard ceiling tiles, suggesting a drop ceiling, and square light panels.

Tsuya crept towards the back of the vehicle and opened the cargo bay.

While Tsuya investigated, Kaida breathed out a low sigh and kept her eye on the double doors just in case someone decided to enter.

The back of the vehicle's cargo bay was filled with what looked like flimsy paper bundled into stacks. Opening the door, however, made noise, as it was a roll-up door that squeaked at the top.

Tsuya winced at her foolhardy, hasty action, which had possibly given away their position. She slipped into the rear of the bay, crouching down at the bottom and pointing her pistol out at the warehouse. "Nagamira-hei!"

"Shh!" Kaida quickly tried to get her comrade to not raise her voice any in panic as she quickly darted around the vehicle, placing it between her and the entrance to the room, going prone to get a better aim but winced slightly when she realized how much that crushed her chest. She settled for crouching near the corner instead.

Dozens of tense seconds died amidst no movement from the building. No sounds were heard.

Once she was satisfied that there were no raging SMX coming in to tear them limb from limb, Tsuya crept out of the vehicle's cargo bay - with one quick look back at the stacked paper to try and determine what it was.

In the dim light, Tsuya could read words printed on the paper. There were pictures on it, too. Both words and pictures were the same from stack to stack.

Kaida slowly emerged from her cover. "...Let's move on before anyone becomes curious enough to actually check." With that, she moved towards the double doors and pressed her back against the wall off to the side.

Tsuya nodded and followed quickly and closely behind her partner, gun pointed down just in case.

The doors did not open for them, having small brass knobs on them. Still no sound from the other side.

Kaida took the initiative this time, turning the knobs -very- slowly to make as little noise as possible as she pushed it open just enough to peer inside. She held her pistol up, but with the laser turned off for the moment.

Stacks of paper were on the left side of a narrow hall that broke left after just a few meters. A single brass-knobbed door, painted a pale blue, appeared to be the only exit from Kaida's view. The door stopped her from seeing the right wall.

Tsuya raised her pistol and scooted around Kaida, poking the weapon and just enough of her head to see around the door.

Kaida noted no immedeate threat on her side, so she pushed the door open a little wider and aimed her pistol towards the opposite wall while scanning for movement.

Another blue-painted door greeted Tsuya. From the angle, it was likely the door that led back outside, into the bend of the "L." Beyond the door leading to the inside of the building, both Neko heard steps. A door creaked open, then shut with a bang.

Tsuya's ears twitched violently at the bang, and she snapped towards the source of the noise. "There. That way."

"Don't be hasty..." Kaida slowly advanced in the direction of the other door, but she began scanning the room as she did, looking for movement and/or security cameras and the like, just as the room before.

No cameras or personnel were present. To the left of Kaida, the hallway went a long ways down, likely back into the large, empty room they'd just left.

Tsuya crouched next to the inside door, checking her pistol over while Kaida scouted the hallway.

Kaida felt slightly vexed that there would be pretty much nothing in the first couple of rooms. What exactly was this supposed to represent? Nobody at the entrances? Were they attacking a civillian target or something? Something wasn't right about the simulation and it bugged the hell out of her. (Not that she trusted the sim's AI in the first place, but still.) Kaida took up position beside the next door and looked to Tsuya to see if she was ready to go. She checked her pistol, deciding to keep the laser sight off. If she could see well enough in the dark here, she didn't need that to aim, nor did she want to alert anyone before she shot. "Not even a silencer...?" She murmured to herself.

Tsuya nodded curtly at her partner's look. The lack of hostiles was bothering her, as well, and the contents of the truck she'd inspected - which was clearly not weapons or any kind of ammunition, though she hadn't had time to closely inspect what was written on the papers - added a whole extra level of suspicion to the scenario. She checked her pistol again, just in case, then twisted the doorknob and nudged the door open without going inside.

The door led to a small hall with doors on the right side — one open and dimly light through a large, glass brick window — and a set of facing doors on the left. Through the door at the other end of the hall was a wide room with one large, blue desk, drab carpet and more glass brick windows.

The hall itself had a tile floor. No one was present, but a flush was heard off to the left, along with the sounds of someone working a paper towel dispenser. No lights were on in the hall, and they remained hidden in darkness.

Kaida's ears twitched at the noise and she motioned to her comrade to follow. Pinpointing the door that the noise came from, she placed herself at the far end of the door, gesturing for Tsuya to place herself at the opposite side. Lowering her voice even further, Kaida whispered, "You're probably better with a blade than I am, wait till the target exits then go for the throat to silence it, and cover it's mouth to be safe. I'll try to restrain it so it doesn't create a racket in a last second struggle or make a noise hitting the ground. Are you up for it?" Kaida tensed slightly. Tsuya had a short amount of time to bring up any objections she had, otherwise she was ready to do this quickly and quietly.

Tsuya grunted quietly, though she bent and drew her knife anyway, then holstered her gun. "They would know we were coming, if they were trained. Military targets don't flush the toilet and then make more noise." She flicked her ears a few times. The strangeness of this simulation was beginning to put her teeth on edge.

The door swung open and revealed a man wearing a very typical tactical outfit — a GP-1 battle rifle slung over one shoulder, a vest full of magazines and equipment, a balaclava over his head with only the eye-part revealed, knife around one thigh and a pistol around the other over flat khaki pants. He snorted and walked, not looking behind him. There were only five meters between him and the office area.

Clearly, this man was not the civilian that Tsuya had been imagining. She gripped her knife firmly as she rose to her feet, taking small and quiet but quick steps towards the balaclava-wearing man, and closed the distance before he got too far away. Then she lifted the knife and drew the blade across his throat as her other hand moved to clamp over his mouth to try and prevent him from making a sound.

The man made no sound as blood poured from his slashed throat, quickly soaking his vest and the clothing beneath it in barely visible red. Tsuya had succeeded, as he weakly struggled with his free hand and bled to death.

That was the case, at least, until the man, using his other hand, fired a shot from his rifle into the tile.

The sound was earsplitting in the little hall, but what came after it was still audible over the man's radio. "POSITION F!" went the radio.

The faintest clattering and tromping could be heard in the office as the Nekos' ears recovered from the ringing. No other shots were fired from the dead man, who had crumpled to the ground in his own shiny pool of deep red. The rifle had dropped away from him, and he had two (bloodied) magazines in his vest. On his belt were incendiary grenades and the radio, as well as a Type 28B .40-caliber pistol.

Despite Kaida's best efforts to restrain him, the shot fired off and she quickly abandoned trying to hold him. The sound of approaching hostiles caused her tense nerves to tighten even more. Thankfully, her mechanical brain wouldn't let stress overtake her that easily. They had a very short time to find cover.

Kaida's eyes locked on the weapon he held. A rifle! This was much, much preferable to her NSP. Without a second thought she snatched the rifle and one of the magazines before taking off in a sprint back to the room they had entered the hallway from. She wasn't going to stay in the hallway where she was fairly sure they would be entering ready to shoot the first thing they saw. Sure, the two Nekos might have the first shot, but what if there were more than two approaching? (and there likely were.) Exactly where to go from the next room? Well... she'd have to see. Hopefully Tsuya was thinking further ahead than she was.

Tsuya dropped the man's corpse on the ground with a heavy thump, sheathing her knife as she stooped and picked up the weapons and the magazine Kaida hadn't gotten - it wouldn't do to have the enemy with extra equipment. She stomped firmly on the radio with the aim of crushing it before she retreated towards the hallway door after Kaida, drawing her pistol on the way. "We have grenades now. The enemies will be trapped in the hall; we can easily beat them."

Kaida halted at the doorway, turning and aiming her rifle back down the hallway, ready to shoot the first thing to move that wasn't Tsuya. Once Tsuya was clear though, she would pull back into the other room for the moment.

ON:

The two Neko were faced with an odd situation — enemies were perhaps waiting for them on the other side of the hall, in the office area. One combatant was very dead and stripped of weapons. The radio was crushed. And no noise was being made anywhere. This made the sharp shout of "STUN!" from somewhere in the office rather loud. Perhaps not as loud as the sounds of the stun grenade that clanked off the wall and into the pool of blood around the dead man.

Upon the shout, Tsuya lunged into the doorway, eyes squeezed shut, and grabbed both door handles to pull them shut in anticipation of the grenade's explosion.

Kaida jumped backwards and moved out of sight of the grenade, crouching next to the door and squeezing her eyes shut in anticipation of the explosion. She had a feeling what was to follow, and hoped Tsuya was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, they didn't have the time to speak just yet.

The grenade did what it was meant to do, firing a concussive blast of light and sound, thumping hard against the door but not penetrating it. The two Neko shook some, but were otherwise unharmed. More shouts from beyond the door: "Five, Six, go clear!"

Tsuya took a step back along the wall, parallel to the door. She lifted her pistol, waiting for the enemies to burst through, and looked to Kaida questioningly.

Kaida's eyes flickered to Tsuya's recently acquired grenades. "Think now would be a good time to use one of those? It's a narrow hallway, I doubt they could escape it easily." Whatever they decided to do would have to be fast though, as the time that would be effective was only several seconds.

"We'd have to open the door."

"Just a little bit" Kaida placed one three-fingered hand on the door, ready to push it open if Tsuya decided she wanted to do so. "Choose now..."

The steps were careful. The sound of guns being shouldered and safeties being flicked were not too far away.

"...just a little, then." She stepped quickly over to where Kaida was standing, knelt, and palmed one of the grenades, her fingers resting on the buttons.

Kaida quickly pushed the door open just enough for Tsuya to toss the grenade into the hallway, which she quickly backed away from in case the door decided not to absorb any panic fire.

Tsuya depressed the buttons, counted two seconds, then rolled the grenade into the hall just before retreating.

Tsuya saw one person just entering the hallway with a rifle; another was pointing their gun into the hall. Both saw her and fired shots at her. Tsuya was lucky that the wall she had to her back was some kind of cinder brick; it absorbed the shots as the grenade rolled along the ground. A shout, then a massive explosion that blasted the door wide open and sent flames thrusting out between Kaida and Tsuya. Neither of them were hurt, but the condition of their assailants was unknown — for about half a second, until more shots started going down the hall and crashing into the bricks protecting both of them.

"Gah.. Mind using that other one? Just throw it a bit harder down the hall." Tsuya wouldn't have to expose herself for this one at least. (Aside from perhaps her hand) And hell, they were bloody nekos, surely they could accurately toss a grenade around a corner without having to look.

Tsuya nodded and grabbed the second one, holding it for the same amount before tossing it in.

The second grenade rolled far enough, and exploded into the office. They did not have the chance to see their handywork before an alarm started blaring throughout the hall and sprinklers came on, hurling water all over the place to quash the flames from the two handheld bombs. However, there were no more shots being fired.

Though the shooting stopped, Kaida wasn't convinced that had taken care of all of them. She crouched and tensed up, waiting a few seconds, the leaping across the doorway over to Tsuya's side. With any luck, the survivors would take a shot at her, but hopefully not in time to hit her.

No shots came, but there was a shrill scream of pain from beyond the hall. Rushed footsteps were audible, then silenced, replaced with hushed talking.

"Nagamira-hei!" Tsuya jumped in surprise at the sudden leap, then stood up quickly, pressing her back to the wall again. She glared at Kaida.

"Shh." Kaida frowned slightly and looked around the room for the nearest source of the alarm, taking her pistol out and shooting at it if/when she does see it. "Listen..."

"...fire alarm."

Kaida glared at her, "What they're saying, I meant."

"'Oh, help me, I have been shot'?"

The fire alarm was silenced in the hall, and for some reason wasn't working in other areas, even though the sprinklers were. The words were just barely audible — "Take some of this, get to the back line. Boss, we need our Demon to get up here. Don't know how many there are." The reply was not heard. "Understood." More guns being shouldered.

Tsuya peeked through the opened door, holding her pistol in both hands. She tried to avoid being seen, of course.

Tsuya's gaze around the corner revealed a pair of booted feet laying within the confines of the doorway into the office area, and little else beyond charred wall and soaked tile and carpet.

A message came across the field of vision for both Neko — Kaida was to remain in position; Tsuya was meant to go forward and attack.

Tsuya noted the surroundings, then slipped back out of the line of fire - before the message flashed across her eyes, making her growl under her breath. She nodded curtly to Kaida with a mutter of "you saw it." Once she'd collected herself a bit, she crouched low, nudged the door aside just a bit, and crept out into the hallway, pistol at the ready.

Since Tsuya was quiet, no one heard her move. But there was movement across the threshold of the open door on the other side of the hall, as a person zipped past it without looking at her, holding her rifle. More radio traffic replies followed: "Yessir, ready to send two inside."

Tsuya had little time to act.

Tsuya crouched down lower, half-behind the door, using it as a shield. Her ears perked up at the radio chatter, and she raised her gun towards the approaching figure, aiming at her upper torso, then squeezing the trigger twice in quick succession.

The approaching figure — who had only been crossing the doorway toward another person — fell in a heap, the two scalar energy blasts hitting her in the arm and the neck. She spasmed as she went down, and suddenly the hall was lit up with gunfire. A bullet easily pierced Tsuya's cover and nearly took off a finger; if she wanted to be safe, she needed to hide behind the bricks.

Tsuya rolled smoothly from her position back behind the safety of the brick wall, catching the doorhandle with her foot just enough to pull it shut as she moved. Once she'd escaped, and hindered the enemy's passage somewhat, she ran in her low crouch back towards the cargo vehicle, taking cover behind it.
