Outside of the star system one of the brand new Keiru 2 class assault transports made the transition into this universe. Its presence was preceded only by a slight bulge in subspace and soon the ship was headed toward its destination, the carrier Star Knight. The NDI had already been informed that the Qelnoran Empire was going to be sending someone to help out in the interest of furthering relations but what it boiled down to is that Uso was going to be in harms way once again. The cargo hold of the ship carried her golem power armor as well as the standard QIS battle support system. The Kieru approached the carrier with only its passive sensors on, trying to be as stealthy as possible incase the Jaaq'tah decided to counterattack at that moment. Once the ship was close in to the Star Knight it broadcast a signal asking for clearance to dock.

The N.S.S. Star Knight was one of the Nerimian Confederation's spanking new Byakko strike carriers, a hybrid cruiser/carrier unit that was every bit as powerful as the old Prometheus cruisers but held a mecha complement as large as the Whirlwind carriers. In addition to its massive load of XF-14 strike craft, the ship was an infantry carrier ship that allowed the ship to deploy an entire division of ground troops into battle. In the Second Draconian War era, the Byakko was a jack-of-all-trades ship class that could take on multiple roles equally well without sacrificing functionality. The ship hovered over the blue-green sphere known as Cirios, it detected the incoming Keiru vessel approaching it, a flight of XF-14 fighters launching from its bays meanwhile, the communications officer sent a message from the ship's captain, Captain Seiji Minamida. "This is the N.S.S. Star Knight, your IFF beacon shows you are friendly. You are cleared to dock. Our shadow drones will escort you in."

The AI piloting the ship gave an affirmative before bringing the ship inside of the Byakko. Meanwhile inside of the cargo bay Uso was not to happy about being re-assigned to war against the Jaaq'tah just because the analysts said it would be important. But then again she never was one to listen to her superiors. As the ship touched down inside of the carrier she made one final check on her power armor. She held out her arm, causing it to display an imbedded holographic interface, and moved her fingers around. The display screen assured her that the armor would be functioning at 100% when she put it on. Once the doors of the transport opened she started her search for the officer she would be serving under.

When Uso came inside the ship's aft docking bay, she would find large suited-troopers in armor that wasn't identified in her database. These troopers were known as MACE, or Mobile Armored Combat Engineers. They were responsible for the maintenance of the ship and her sophisticated equipment. She would see them working on damaged shadow drones and reloading those shadow drones and sending them back to the launch bays. This was, after all, a ship of war that was carrying out extensive carrier operations. In the short time this battle had been raging, the Star Knight had launched over 250 sorties against the enemy on the ground below.

Master Sergeant Saburo Kurosawa adjusted a neckerchief tied around his head, that rested just above his thick, black eyebrows. He wasn't the one making the decisions, but it seemed unwise, from his experience, to work with the displaced Qel'noran Industrial Sector after their violent breakaway from the Yamatai Star Empire. Not only had the Star Army been useful allies, but they were also the NDI's fail-safe should they get in over their heads. Any action that could harm the trust shared with those pointy-eared amazons was an undoubtedly bad idea. Perhaps the... MSG stopped, looking up to watch the entrance of this "ally."

A MACE trooper knocked on the side of Uso's transport, or at least that's what it sounded like from the inside. In reality, the MACE was attaching a magnetic tether beacon to the vessel that would allow the repulsorlift system to hoist the vessel into its dock and secure it. The MACE then walked away, green light spraying from his right arm as it repaired a stress fracture along the side of the docking bay's starboard wall.

This 'ally' had long green hair tied into a ponytail that reached down below the middle of her back. Her clothing was far from the standard uniform of QIS or even the NDI as she had on a black tank top with a small QIS logo embroidered in green just above her left breast and baggy, gothic looking, black pants. Her powered armor left the transport, allowing it to depart, and carried with it the supplies she would be needed for the operation. This was a slight modification from the original NDI specifications but it would be useless in combat without an organic pilot.

A blue-haired female materialized before Uso dressed in the standard female officer's uniform of the NDI, a relatively form-fitting sealed suit with her rank insignia above her left breast (Lt. Commander). "Welcome onboard the N.S.S. Star Knight. My name is Starla, I am the ship's avatar. You are Uso Tasuki, correct?"

With a grunt, Kurosawa secretively took a swig of rice-wine of out a small flask before emerging from behind the cover of an unoccupied Golem power armor. With a confident swagger and his usual scowl on his rough face, the short man's aura of experience made him seem somewhat larger than life. A two-star elite, the Master Sergeant had seen some shit in his day.

Starla looked no older than sixteen but her voice was strangely womanly and authorative. She glanced towards Kurosawa. "Welcome Master Sergeant. I was just greeting our new arrival."

Uso nodded, "That is correct, I'm here to assist in any way possible" While alone she wouldn't make that much of a difference on the battlefield, she would be able to call in support from QIS should the NDI need it. However the analysts predicted that the NDI would need no such help.

"Carry on," Kurosawa said gruffly to Starla. The comments by Uso only received a stare in reply. "I don't think we'll need any help from QIS.â€

N.S.S. Star Knight [Byakko-class Strike Carrier]

Lieutenant Natsumi Rakuseki on the surface appeared to be the typical pencil-pusher in the ranks of the Nerimian Defense Initiative. She had all the requisite degrees and training programs, the refined good-looks, and the proper mindset of a military bureaucrat, but deep down she was something else entirely. Beneath that somewhat sterile exterior was a highly-trained covert operative with more combat hours and experience than most platoons combined. There was a special name for what Natsumi was: Three-Star Elite.

Standard NDI organizational principles divided soldiers into four distinct skill levels: Green, Regular, Veteran, and Elite. The first three levels are self-explanatory, but the last designation, Elite, brought an entire different scheme to the game. There were five sub-classes of Elite, One-Star all the way to Five-Star. In truth, One and Two-Star Elite troops were fairly common, comprising the top five percent of all NDI forces. They were soldiers that were regarded with the utmost respect and high esteem by their peers.

But high echelons were in a class all their own. The number of Three, Four, and Five-Star Elites in current service numbered less than two dozen, and they were spread out through the entirety of the military in various roles and missions, reserved for the most important operations where death would surely befall a lesser warrior.

Natsumi Rakuseki, the wife of NDI commander-in-chief, Nathan Rakuseki, was a member of the NDI's military intelligence apparatus and was brought into action whenever they needed something done with impeccable precision. On the inside, her codename was Juno, a play off the fact that she was the wife of the head honcho (Juno was the Roman God Jupiter's wife).

Now, she was being activated for another mission: the retrieval of the Draconian 'X'.

***********

Natsumi Rakuseki strode down the surprisingly spacious cooridors of the N.S.S. Star Knight, which still had the sterile smell of a brand new ship. Like most NDI ships, navigating through it was somewhat confusing if one had no idea where he or she was exactly going to. The ship itself was like a miniature city, with clubs, movie theaters, restaurants, and other amenities for the crew inside of it. NDI ships were this way because it quite frankly became a home away from home when the ships were away from their homeport.

"Honestly, they need to sell maps and brochures to these things," said Natsumi, her nose crinkling in frustration for a moment as she reached her quarters, finally.

Before Natsumi could enter her quarters, a blue-haired feminine figure known as Starla apepared before her with ominous crystal-blue eyes. "Lieutenant, I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I have a priority call from Commander Alicia Clark."

Natsumi cursed slightly under her breath, her body jolting back a step from the mere surprise of the hologram. She trailed her eyes over the woman, inspecting it to a point before making any expression toward the situation. "Of course... Thank you."

Starla disappeared again, deciding to manifest elsewhere where she was needed on the ship. Meanwhile, Commander Alicia Clark, who Natsumi knew as her strong-willed sister-in-law.

Natsumi's VIRGIL began to chirp and she reached down and turned it on, putting it to her ear. "Rakuseki here. What can I do for you, Commander?"

"Are you in a secure place?" asked Clark.

Natsumi looked about quickly, walking into her quarters and securing the door behind her. "Okay, have with it."

Clark cleared her throat and began to speak. "After we discom, I want you to head to the port-side launch bay and contact the MACE named "Mason." He'll get you suited up with a battlesuit and weapons. You're going to be forward-deployed into a hostile firezone and will rendezvous with Sergeant Kurosawa's unit at a pre-designated point. Once your unit has secured the Draconian 'X', report back to me immediately and you'll be extracted. However, we have reports in the field that Xyelee troopers are lurking so you may get into some heavy action."

Natsumi sighed. She used to live for this type of thing before she was married and had a family to worry about. Unfortunately, things changed. Nevertheless, the adrenaline began to flow. She nodded a few times in response. "I expect a nice holiday bonus this year, just so you know."

"If you survive."

Natsumi was brought back to reality sharply, as if slapped in the face. "I will."

"Just make sure you secure the X," said Clark, as if the X was more important than her sister-in-law's life (it was). "Discom."

Natsumi lowered the VIRGIL and sighed. After taking a second to recompose herself, opening her door and heading towards the launch bay.

**********

51 minutes later

The Dragonfly II dropship descended into Cirios' atmosphere at hypersonic velocities, flanked on all sides by XF-14E strike craft as combat escorts. The Jaaq'tah were putting up one hell of a fight, meeting every Confederate advance with one of their own. Despite superior numbers of NDI strike craft in theater, the Jaaq'tah hotly contested every air battle, using their mobile missile vehicles to zone the XF-14s into kill areas where Cobra flyers lurked.

"Fancy suit of armor you have there, Lieutenant," said the warrant officer piloting the dropship as it entered the combat zone. The automated weapons systems of the dropship quickly went online as rotary autocannons deployed and unloaded a wall of metal to suppress the enemy forces. The entire dropship shook as XF-14s zoomed by NOE, unleashing Black Arrow AP munitions and vaporizing and glassing the earth with their pulse cannons.

Natsumi was clad in a dull-black-grey battlesuit that was even more sleek than some of the newer Phalanx class armors used by troops in the Galactic South where Ruzhyo was leading the assault against the Beta Lyrae system. Designed jointly by CONTRA and the Vaishan Protectorate, the Phantom Mark II armor was the Draconian Alliance's answer to the Jaaq'tah's widely successful Chameleon series.

"Let's just hope it fights as good as it looks," said Natsumi in a subdued tone, activating the active stealth system of the suit. The air around her rippled as she turned completely transparent. The only way friendly forces knew she was there was because of the fifth-dimensional blip the suit intentionally gave off to make her detectable to friendlies.

"Godspeed, Lieutenant," said the co-pilot of the dropship.

Natsumi leapt from the side of the dropship, freefalling into the dense canopy before activating her gravimetric descent system, landing lightly in the deep jungle. According to her sensors, hostiles were all around her, but she hadn't drawn a single shot. A smile came across her face for a brief moment.

This could be fun...

Brigadier General Amalia Cuervo entered the briefing room, returning a salute to the two guards posted at the door before continuing to her chair at the head of the long table in the center of the room. Proper military protocol was for all lower ranking troops to stand at attention until the General took her seat. The General took her seat and looked at the three soldiers in the room with her with a stern look. "You may be seated."

Uso sat down in her chair and waited for the briefing to start. She took a few moments to get comfortable in her chair because she figured she'd be here for a while.

A short, well-built man, one Ishmael Montoya, seated himself after Uso, glancing at the felinoid female with a cautious look before returning his full attention to the General.

Kurosawa had a very dignified look in the briefing room that contradicted his usual rough nature. His stern face looked less angry and more...considerate of the surroundings. He made sure neither he or Uso accidentally touched one another when they sat.

"As far as the rest of the members of this division are concerned, we are simply here to dislodge a Jaaq'tah strike force from this world, but the situation is much more serious," said General Cuervo, taking a drink of water. "This world is home to an ancient Draconian Empire artifact that we cannot allow to fall into the hands of the Jaaq'tah. While our heavier forces engage the Jaaq'tah, we have designated your unit, Sergeant Kurosawa, to retrieve the artifact and get it off of this world. Unfortunately, the Jaaq'tah have their own commando teams moving to grab the artifact. Luckily, we maintain space superiority so they cannot get it off of this world, but they may be able to transmit the data it holds off world if they get their claws on it."

Kurosawa remained thoughtfully silent for a moment, and then asked, "Can we get the logistics guys to put my men at the top of the list for acquiring the newer-model armors?"

A holographic screen emerged in the center of the table, showing an image of the planet Cirios ( http://ndispacy.tripod.com/images/Cirios.gif ). She highlighted the easternmost island and highlighted a smaller portion of that island where an alien building formation was surrounded by a very dense jungle-like area, with several narrow trails within that facilliated armored vehicle movement. "Unfortunately, no. The Procurement Department has been a little slow in getting Phalanx and Nataku units to the Northern Front. The Southern Front seems to be the priority at the moment. You'll have to make due with your Warhawk and Golem units."

"I see. Will we be soliticing help from our allies, the Star Army?"

"That has yet to be determined. If the Jaaq'tah call in more space-based assets, we will need to reinforce," replied the General.

"QIS can provide additional support should it be needed" Uso added.

"The CONSTRACOM has given explicit orders not to bring QIS fleet assets into this operation," replied the General. "Even your involvement is classified."

Montoya listened to the other three with his eyes on the map, commiting the terrain to memory. "What kind of forces do the Jaaq'tah currently have available? And what are our countering options?" he asked, looking over at the General.

Kurosawa shot a quick glare in Uso's direction. "It would make some sense to keep this matter quiet from the Star Army unless we need them, because they will likely want the artifact for themselves, nevermind the state of war between the Star Army and the Qel'noran. But, by the same logic, certain other parties," he nodded a bit to his right at the woman, "shouldn't be here either."

"We currently have four full regiments on the ground -- including two armored cavalry, but the terrain doesn't exactly lend itself to even hovercraft combat. We estimate their numbers to be just under 35,000 total," said the General. "Even though our overall ground force is smaller, we have space superiority and we have been launching hundreds of sorties per hour to hammer them from the air."

"Will the Naval gunners be providing heavy fire support as well? I want to know what sort of intel and tracking I'm going to have. We can't have them popping out of the ground like the hive did on us in Capital City. Every sensor we can get pointed at the planet helps save lives," Kurosawa said.

The General brought up the tactical screen, highlighting the icon of a Dragonfly II dropship and enlarging it. "We'll be bringing you in under the cover of darkness. Cirios has a remarkably fast day/night cycle, so we only have a fifteen minute window to get you into your drop zone. Likewise, extraction has that same window. When you get on the ground, you'll be in hostile territory, but the new electronic countermeasures packs we've installed in your armors should keep you reasonably invisible to their sensors. We've given you battallion-level access to two of our M9 artillery platforms, which should give you more than enough fire support. Also, one of our reconnaissance shuttles is in high orbit over the battle area, feeding you electronic intel via SLICS."

A short, slow nod aknowledged the answer to his question and Montoya waited for the General's reply to Kurosawa before speaking up again. "How many of their resources are they devoting to retreive this artifact?"

"Fortunately, most of their resources are tied up in battles against our other forces, however our sensors have detected they have roughly a full battallion in the general vacinity of the alien facillity. We already have inserted a covert operative into the hostile combat zone and she's going to be collecting vital intelligence on the force strength there. When you deploy, you'll be able to link up with her and continue on your mission."

"Speaking of sensors," Kurosawa added, "One of the tech-heads at..." the Master Sergeant stopped in time to avoid saying the class six, "he said there were some unusual hyperspace readings in the area. I'm maybe being paranoid, but did the system say anything about it? I want to know if something...else is out there.

"I've heard nothing about it, Sergeant," replied the General.

"Right," Kurosawa nodded, shifting his position in his seat a little.

The general gave one final stern warning. "The last time we retrieved one of these ancient artifacts, the facillity had a cadre of elite guards. Be careful and try to avoid them whenever possible and if you encounter them, avoid combat if possible."

Quickly running through a checklist of other possible questions, Montoya arrived at one more."Is there a backup plan if we fail this? I assume that if we fail we won't be getting out alive; is there going to be a second try at the recovery?" he asked slowly.

"We'll destroy the planet if worse comes to worse," replied the General flatly. "We cannot allow our enemies to get their hands on this artifact."

Kurosawa smirked ever-so-slightly. He didn't really plan on pussy-footing around when it came to the mission. "You know the deal," he said to Montoya. "standard procedure."

An appropriate backup plan...and Montoya knew full well that the NDI had the firepower to do so. He nodded, his half-lidded, stoic expression unchanged.

"What is the plan should the NDI loose space supirority?" Uso asked, "I assume we should attempt to destroy the artifact?"

Kurosawa frowned, "We'll hold out while backup reestablishes control."

And if they aren't able to, they'll glass the planet anyway, Montoya mentally noted to himself.

The bone rattling vibrations ceased when the repulsors kicked in. The heat shield continued its descent into the lake twelve thousand feet below, but the drop ship suddenly cut its descent rate in half, the stomachs of all twenty four passengers collectively lurching upwards in response. Three minutes later and twenty two klicks east, the drop ship settled to the ground at NDI Basepoint Epsilon, next to a sister ship which had accompanied it down.

Basepoint Epsilon was established only three days ago, when four hundred and fifty six ATAC soldiers managed to repel local Jaaq'tah forces far enough back to establish perimeter defense systems. Of course, perimeter defense systems involved heavy artillery emplacements that seemed to fire almost constantly in a never ending effort to keep the cold-blooded swarm at bay, but it had managed to hold out for three days. That was long enough to give the base a name and send in reinforcements. Hence the drop ships.

The first to disembark off the two drop ships were the fourty-two Irregular ATAC soldiers. Dressed in unidentifying NDI standard uniforms, the company silently assembled and marched in perfect formation towards one of the dome shaped bunkers currently being nanolathed by two squads of MACE, each utilizing their Field Operating Repair and Construction Escort, or FORCE Drone (an anthropomorphic drone twice the size of a MACE suit capable of nano-manufacturing), to complete the building that was approved for construction twelve hours ago.

While the ATACs were moving off, six more soldiers stepped off the two drop ships. Aside from their delayed deboarding, something set these six apart from the other soldiers at this base. Perhaps it was the extensive obvious cyberware that each of them carried. Several legs, arms, eyes, and various other body parts amongst this crew had been replaced with sleek chrome mechanical counterparts.

Of these six chromed warriors, one stepped forward, immediately, the other five fell into a parade rest. At first glance, one would notice that his left arm and eye were obviously cybered. Several jack ports protruded from his neck and forehead. Though a mere five foot four, Major Jack Harper stood out even against the other five. Of some degree of Asian descent, he displayed a fine degree of discipline. He spoke softly, as he stood close to his fellow soldiers. "Ten minutes to stow. We lift off in fifteen." He pointed to his rear right "Hanger's over there. Move." Immediately, the other five disassembled in a hurry.

16:15 UMT

Deep in the jungle, twenty seven klicks away from Basepoint Epsilon, seven men moved as quietly as their Golem powered armor suits would allow through the swampy murkness of the jungle floor. These seven were what remained of the four squads sent to recoinoiter a nearby system of caves for enemy forces, which they had met with the intention of removing. The sheer number of Arquiel suits located on the mountains above the caves turned the Search and Destroy mission immediately into what was known as a Kiss and Tell. Unfortunately, of the twenty soldiers that had travelled the thirty klicks to the caves, only these seven had made the first three klicks of the journey back.

Four Lance Corporal Williams has only been in charge of these seven men for two hours, thirty seven minutes and fifty four seconds. He is only in command of these seven men because Four Sergent Stephenson was relieved of command two hours, thirty seven minutes and fifty nine seconds ago by a Jaaq'tah plasma rifle. Four Corporal Vogulfry, Four Corporal O'Keefe, and Four Corporal Maguire were similarly relieved of command at about the same time. There was something to be said about a non-descript Golem suit.

The jungle was alive with the sound of vegetation rustling in the light rain, birds calling across the canopy to their mates, and plasma fire raining down less than five-hundred meters from the retreating confederate units. The plasma mortar salvos honed in closer to the units, and the last man out was accelerated past the first by the impact of a direct hit. The six remaining men put their all into it and broke into a full forward sprint. At least five of them recognized the reality that they would have to change their pants if they made it out.

Two more men were shot down by plasma fire before the remaining troops made it out of the immediate jungle onto a wide clearing that followed along a narrow river twenty of the remaining klicks back towards Basepoint Epsilon. Just as they had made it to an outcroping of trees and rocks, where they had decided to make their last stand, fifty or so Arquiel suits emerged from the jungle in pursuit of the Golem.

As the Arquiel suits steadily approached, the Golem held their formation, everybody's finger on the trigger. Surprisingly, the Jaaq'tah units did not open fire. The lizards continued to move closer, and at about fifty meters out, stopped. The Jaaq'tah in charge of this war party stepped forward, and raised his rifle at the Golem troops.

"I am Commander Ss'lua. Surrender and you are promised a painless death."

Before any of the confederate troops could retort, a small cylindrical hole, precisely 7.62 cm in diameter appeared in Commander Ss'lua's face shield. As he fell to his knees, and then slumped over, a thunderous crack was heard as the soundwaves of the sniper shot finally caught up to the bullet.

The Jaaq'tah troops immediately turned outwards and began visually searching for the sniper. It wasn't long before one of them started shouting and pointing wildly in the general direction of Basepoint Epsilon. Approaching from that direction were six Acolyte assault gunships approaching at rapid speed. Five more Arquiel suits were hit with killing shots by the snipers leaning out the sides of the gunships.

Small captions began appearing on the HUDs of the Golem units, succinctly telling them to get out of the way, which they all promptly did. When they had managed to fight their way far enough away from the group of lizards, two of the gunships opened up with their rotary cannons. The rounds that were designed to cripple tanks and mechs tore through two and three powered armor suits at a time, making short work of the Jaaq'tah hunting party.

The Thunderbirds, as Major Harper's squadron of Acolytes were known, were an Elite squadron of pilots, each given a lightly customized gunship model and a squad of seven Veteren Warhawk troops to provide support in numerous scenarios. As noted by the four surviving Golem units as the gunships used their anti-grav coils and vectored thrust engines to continue on forward, the cavalry had arrived.

None of the ships stopped to pick up the stray troops. Having had the attention diverted off of them for a while, however, no complaints were made, and the Golem quickly moved back towards base. The Thunderbirds, however, had some caves to clean out.

X'uta crouched low to the ground, his amber-colored eyes tracing the movements of the Type III tactical drone that obviously belonged to a Human battledress unit. Under normal circumstances, a hailstorm of anti-personnel fire would've come his way from the nearby infantry squad, but the powerful active camouflage system of his Chameleon battle armor masked his presence to the sophisticated sensor drone.

In the distance, he could see the visual outline of a Golem suit wielding the large 10mm DIWS rifle that was used as a long-range sniper rifle and light anti-armor weapon.

Perfect.

X'uta reached to his side, grasping the retracted plasma lance and starting to creep forward at a deliberately slow pace. He didn't want to make too much noise – his ACS couldn't mask the sounds he made. The Golem remained in place, feeding off information given to him by his drones, but he could find nothing.

He saw a faint EMS spike on his HUD. It was a tight beam laser transmission that he couldn't intercept, but he was guessing the man was a scout communicating with the rest of his squad.

X'uta ignited the plasma lance, the radiation of high wavelengths of electromagnetic energy suddenly visible on the Golem trooper's sensors. The Golem turned in X'uta's direction and raised his weapon to fire—

—a blue-white flare sliced off the long barrel of the DIWS, the heavy barrel crashing to the ground. X'uta moved in for the kill, but the Golem pilot leapt backwards using for his jump jets, reaching for his SIAR and cooking off 6mm ammunition towards the Jaaq'tah stealth trooper—

--X'uta strafed to the left, firing off three bolts from his plasma lance, the first two splashing against the barrier shield and the third impacting directly center of mass, boiling away andrium armor and blasting through to the pilot inside. The Golem suit exploded, the shell remaining largely intact, but the soft core was nothing more than a charred, bloody mess.

The Golem's friends came, two descending from the canopy of the forest, large 30mm shells raining down at hypersonic velocities, blasting fairly large craters into the ground as they exploded around the Jaaq'tah warrior. X'uta blended into the background radiation, turning off his plasma lance and watching from relative safety as the rest of the Human squad saturated the area with fire.

"Goddamnit! A fucking Chameleon...â€

It was go time as the three-man commando unit was strapped into the drop chutes of the Dragonfly II dropship, which was more like an armored transport than anything else. As the three-man team could see on their sensors, a massive air battle was raging on below them as two full wings of XF-14s engaged a Jaaq'tah air contingent nearly twice their size. The Shadowdrones fought with exceptional tenacity, massive volleys of Shito missiles clearing the skies where the dropship would have to go.

"We are approaching the drop zone, Sergeant Kurosawa, get your squad ready for deployment!" said the warrant officer that was piloting the dropship, the AI-controlled assault cannons firing volleys of KEAPER, SEKEAPER, and Incendiary rounds down into the jungle, tearing to shreds any enemy forces that were in the vicinity.

"Let the regulars handle things if possible. Bodycount is not a factor. Time is," Kurosawa spoke over the comm to his team. "Prepare to commence operation." His Golem power armor had two stars on it, and white cloth tied around its neck.

Smoke and other active countermeasures were released from the dropship, fogging the area. "Dropping our payload now," said the warrant officer, the floor underneath each of the three Golem units giving way as the drop chutes released the armors towards the ground below under the cover of artificially created darkness. On either side of them, stabilized liquid explosive warheads were detonated, literally flattening the forest around them and likely any hostile enemy that was in the zone. On their sensors, they would see three LGEV-PCs race into the jungle ahead of them, deploying squads of infantry to draw fire away from the commando team as they headed into the opposite direction.

Uso landed in and brought her body down into a crouch, making a quick look around and deticating what she saw to memory. In moments she was moving again, following Kurosawa's power armor at the distance of several feet while keeping her T6E 3cm ready to return fire if she was spotted by any Jaaq'tah. Montoya activated his jets to slow his fall, waiting for the light thump of the ground. Once on the ground, he dropped to one knee and deployed his suit's scout drones for recon.

Kurosawa stayed mostly still and didn't fire as he fell. Only just before the surface was just below did he decelerate, coming to a tough, fast stop. As he stood up, he checked his weaponry and navigation equipment. "Speak if you need to, not otherwise. Out." his gravelly voice told the team. He lead the way, rapidly stalking towards the designated waypoint, part of the path that lead to the "X."

The cacophony of sounds the battlefield naturally produced were filtered out by their suits and the standard optical spectrum was changed to a combination IR and UV range environment, where flashes of explosions were dimmed, but the shockwaves were enhanced. Friendlies were outlined in blue, hostiles and unknowns glowed red. As they moved through the jungle towards the waypoint, they'd see a Chimera medium tank and six Arquiel armors racing towards the battle with the infantry platoon. Apparently they hadn't seen them. They had a choice: Let the enemy pass by harmlessly or surprise them with a devastating assault.

The drones began to report in. Montoya found the nav point and glanced over at Kurosawa. Kurosawa dropped and did a high-crawl through the foliage and debris. He continued toward the waypoint. The Jaaq'tah unit continued past them, even though Uso felt inclined to put a few 3cm rounds into that tank. Despite her eagerness to add a Jaaq'tah battle tank to her kill total, she kept on the move, flanking Kurosawa from the right, moving her hand over to direct Montoya to cover their backside.

"You are moving into a zone of increased hostile activity," said the battalion commander over TACnet. "Artillery has already blasted this zone, but your aerial and ground cover will be somewhat decreased once you reach this way point."

Keeping down and as much out of sight as he could, Montoya followed the lead of his squadmates, picking off any Jaaq'tah that came too close. Montoya's tactical drones worked hard to blend the short EMS spikes caused by his DIWS rifle back into the background radiation as to not draw Jaaq'tah units towards the unit's location. The ECM blister in his suit drew more power from the suit's reactor as it baffled Jaaq'tah sensor scans towards them. The Master Sergeant stood and shot one of the enemy soldiers for being too close, then dove back to the ground and continued. He checked the range.

They were less than 200 meters away. They could visually see the way point, where a single LGEV-PC was waiting for them. Kurosawa signaled them to make two quick dashes for it, then sprinted forward, hunched over to keep the lowest possible profile while possible.

Uso slung the T6E over her shoulder and let it attach to the magnetic holster. She activated her TAC missile launcher and used Montoya's tactical drones to target an enemy infantry squad that was likely shadowing them. She chose the "Fire Arrow" surface-to-surface missile, which raced from the magnetic accelerator launcher and moved at hypersonic velocities just a few inches off the surface of the ground, moving like a snake in an ominous zig-zag pattern. With the benefit of the squad's ECM, it was unlikely the Jaaq'tah squad ever saw it coming as the combination high-explosive and SLEX warhead exploded violently, the overpressure shockwave alone wiping out the Jaaq'tah unit. "Score!" she said to herself, turning and following after Kurosawa.

"Took you boys, long enough," said Lance Corporal Janis Houston, the pilot of the LGEV-PC. "We're gonna need to move fast. Attach to the magnetic ports on the side and let's get going."

"1 of 3 attached," Kurosawa said, quickly getting himself fastened aboard.

"2 of 3 attached," replied Montoya as he connected.

Uso took the port on the adjacent side of Kurosawa, stowing her large pseudorecoiless rifle on top of the LGEV-PC.

"All ready," Kurosawa said.

"Alright, boys, let's go!" said Corporal Houston, the LGEV-PC racing forward along the narrow paths in the jungle at hundreds of kilometers per hour. There was a reason LGEV-PC commanders were called 'pilots' rather than 'drivers.' The LGEV-PC was a speed demon in every sense of the word. Its AI-controlled AP turrets turned from side to side, firing off short bursts of 20mm rounds at enemy targets that seemed to move by in a blur with the speed of the unit, but their aim was true. "Having a comfortable ride back there?"

None of the commandos answered.

They could see their next waypoint was nearly 20 kilometers away, but they were covering ground quickly at the pace of over 300 kmph. Despite their excellent ECM capabilities, it was hard to hide the electromagnetic signature of such a craft that made so much noise. Jaaq'tah units were moving towards an intercept path. In response, the rotary plasma cannon rose from its port, tracking targets as they came into range. "This is Red Demon, we have a squadron of Jaaq'tah armor closing in on us. Requesting fire support."

Uso raised her T6E rifle from its port and took aim, her targeting systems adjusting for their speed and wind direction and then she fired, the fluid-powered recoilless rifle launching over 30 3cm rounds in the course of five seconds. With her exceptional crack shooting, sixteen of her shots hit home, disabling three armor units before they could even get a shot off. As she reloaded the weapon, their sensors lit up with massive EMS spikes from their south as the large M9 Meteor artillery platforms assigned to them went live. 3 seconds later, artillery shells exploded in the forest around them, flattening trees and pulverizing enemy armor and infantry. Follow-up strikes from the LGEV-PC's plasma cannon and AP turrets kept the commando unit relatively safe.

The Golem's targeting range wasn't so wonderful in the Master Sergeant's eyes. Kurosawa put a few aimed bursts downrange, but didn't try anything fancy. He kept checking the range toward the next waypoint. To him, the LGEV-PCs were like bull's-eyes for the enemy, and he would be happy to get away from the thing before something took it out.

"We have incoming!" said the pilot, painting the two Cobra II attack flyers that were screaming down from the heavens, plasma cannons firing down towards the LGEV-PC. AP turrets on the hovercraft angled upwards, volleying automatic grenades and 2cm rounds towards the Cobras, whose shields turned away the rounds. "Gimme some fire support. Use your missiles!"

Kurosawa's power armor unleashed its entire complement of onboard missiles as fast as possible, in a swirling mass volley, a la Macross. The Argus Millitech M3 Delta Tactical Missile Launcher was quickly put through the steps of reloading as soon as the missiles were away. The missiles went for the closest Cobra II.

The targeted Cobra II turned to its left, dropping countermeasures to try and evade the missiles, but the combined ECCM packages of all three battledress and the LGEV-PC guided the missiles after their targets and through the countermeasures. One missile struck the port side of the flyer, shearing away an entire wing, sending the plane into a spiral. The other three missiles changed direction, slamming into the fuselage of the craft, completely obliterating it. The other fly was coming back around for a second pass when two azure bolts tore through the cockpit, killing the pilot instantly. The flyer crashed towards the ground and a single XF-14E shot past the unit.

"We're coming up on the waypoint. I suggest you disengage and let me draw off any attackers," said Corporal Houston.

"Roger." Kurosawa unlocked the magnetic clamp and went into a brief, controlled roll. When he stopped, he lay on the ground, headed towards the waypoint. He was slow enought that the other two of his team should easily be able to join him.

Uso and Montoya leapt from the LGEV-PC, taking flanking positions alongside Sergeant Kurosawa. The LGEV-PC came to a fork in the 'road' and took a sharp left, a plasma mortar shell arcing over the horizon towards the general direction of the carrier. Seconds later, a powerful explosion filled the area where the hovercraft had gone. The IFF indicator of the hovercraft suddenly went dead on the unit's screen.

The Master Sergeant didn't make any remark on that. It was something he'd seen often and was expecting. Kurosawa deployed on of his tactical drones and sent it ahead to scout out the waypoint.

Montoya fired a series of seven rounds off, killing the Jaaq'tah trooper that had fired the plasma mortar from nearly two kilometers away. Uso followed up that strike with another missile launch, a SLEX-powered explosion removing the nearest threat to the unit. "Hostiles eliminated, Sarge," said Montoya.

"Stay alert, stay alive," Kurosawa said in a tone that could possibly contain a hint of gratitude within its cold sharpness. He continued leading the way toward the waypoint, watching for signs of the enemy with both his Golem and its tactical drone ahead.

Montoya inched forward, walking along the path with his DIWS raised, ready to fire at a second's notice. He was reading a faint EMS signature, but he couldn't quite lock it down. He was literally feet away from the waypoint. Uso watched his back from a crouched position, her SIAR out and ready to fire.

Kurosawa's eyes narrowed. The tactical drone shot forward. He fired his F-10 Plasma Enveloper in a spread, forward of him, blanketing the area. The other two drones deployed from the Golem shortly afterwards. The area where Kurosawa had unleashed his attack seemed completely sanitary, but the two-star elite could feel someone else there...

Natsumi Rakuseki had been watching the battle from a panoramic view from within the foiliage. She seemed to be oblivious to the battle raging around her and had made no attempt to help Kurosawa's team. In truth, she felt a little reluctant about it. She knew she could've dealt with the situation single-handedly. And so she would, preferrably sooner or later.

She turned on the 'safety' mode of her active stealth system, now visible on the IFF screens of Kurosawa, Montoya, and Uso.

"Welcome. This is where the hard part begins."

The Acolyte class gunship ‘Jupiter' is not a light hovercraft. It is not a medium helicopter or a heavy tank. It is a specialized assault gunship. Vectored thrust engines and anti-grav coils give it an effective maximum altitude that would let it leave the atmosphere, and a NOE altitude of centimeters. And though the Jupiter lacks the same amount of firepower a standard model would carry, having only two FFRAM launchers instead of the standard four, its increased missile range, armor, and reactor mass almost double its effective combat radius as well as life-span. It is designed for endurance, be it for surviving focused fire or, in this case, prolonged stationary defense. Other customizations to this ship include the removal of several redundant secondary systems to provide room for a SLICS-based Level 4 self-guidance system, and increased DNL Response. Currently the Jupiter, holding vigil two hundred meters away from the Jaaq'tah territory southern mountain ridge, is on auto-pilot, its low altitude, relatively low emissions, and ECM keeping it from catching anyone's attention.

Major Jack Harper, callsign 'Sever' is the pilot of the Jupiter, a position held for the commanding officer of the Thunderbird squadron, a team of six elite Acolyte pilots. Only in the upper fifteen percentile skill-wise, there is no one more attuned to the Acolyte class ship than those who ride with the Thunderbirds. Raised from the ranks of the standard ATAC, every one of them is just as elite on the ground as they are in the air. While the Acolyte gunships hold patrol routine, Harper's squad stands one hundred yards from the entrance to the main cave system, near a small outcropping of rocks. Stationed about them are the forty-two men and women of the 420th Irregular ATAC.

Nothing particularly noteworthy, the 420th Irregular ATAC is a veteran company permanently assigned as the Thunderbirds' cargo. While each ship has a well-designed, well-trained transport team to carry, it is inevitable that some will die. The 420th was considered irregular for the sheer number of casualties that were accredited to this company. Troops were consistently being reassigned to the 420th to fill in the gaps left after missions, yet the unblemished success ratio of missions made the expenditures worthwhile to the brass. Consequently, while the Thunderbirds garnish a good amount of respect for their skill and expertise, the 420th Irregular, known colloquially as the 'Reaper's Feast,' gets little more than pity and military campfire stories.

Sgt. Souderbough, commanding officer of the 420th, approached Harper and handed him a small display unit that was cycling through several different shots of cave entrances and the mountains.

"Reconnaissance transmitted by the golems we passed over seems to still be valid. There are definitely a lot of units deep in this system, but for right now they don't seem to be too concerned with the outside. We obviously still have the advantage of surprise, but probably not for very much longer. We stand a good chance of securing at least one passage long enough for reinforcements to arrive."

The Thunderbird known as 'Raven,' Captain Carmen Santiago smiled and patted the Sergeant on his suit's armored shoulder "We *are* the reinforcements, Sarge." The only female of the squad and of obvious Spanish descent, she holds the position of second in command. Where Major Harper is a man of decision and dedication, Captain Santiago is a woman of passion and risk. She turned to Harper and shook her head "I disagree. I think we should blow it out. If these caves are as deep as the Golem unit speculates, it'll give us a pass in at the same time it cuts them off. Even if they try to burrow through it again, it'll take them long enough that it'll be a waste of time.â€

Six Acolyte assault gunships touched down at Basepoint Epsilon. Thirteen men and four women disembarked haphazardly from the six ships. They were tired and wounded, some merely alive through sheer willpower. They forced themselves to march, though it was pure dischord, back to their bunkers. Their mission had been completed. Sergeant Souderbough approached Major Harper as the pilots disembarked.

"Thanks for the lift, sir.â€

Draconian Alliance Command Center - The Erdani Citadel
Draconis Prime

The Eridani Citadel was a massive underground complex nearly three kilometers underneath the hard granite rock of Draconis' Eastern Continent. It was further reinforced with multiple alternating layers of xentronium and tritanium armor and a defense shield powerful enough to turn even a stellar converter blast back. It was home to the Draconian Alliance's High Command Council, which was home to the highest-ranking defense officials from every member of the alliance. It was from here that they coordinated the war effort against the Jaaq'tah Alliance.

"Ruzhyo is on the verge of taking the Beta Lyrae system, but he's lost over one third of his entire unit," said the Hushain Defense Minister Kairos. "I suggest we move in elements of the 104th Navy from Stellaz to reinforce and give Ruzhyo a chance to regroup for the final push."

"Agreed," said Confederate Defense Minister Cameron Blackblade, highlighting the 104th Draconian Navy symbol and sending the order to make the unit's deployment order switch to active. He shifted focus on the galatic map, focusing on the Northern Front, where a battle force led by Grand Admiral Justin Keele was moving to capture the valuable Kitana Province of the Jaaq'tah Alliance.

"The Jaaq'tah are contesting this sector far more heavily than we ever expected," continued Blackblade, bringing up a unit data screen for the 3rd NDI Spacy Battle Force. Losses were over forty percent in this theater alone. "And this is the most important theater of battle for the time being. Ruzhyo has requested three additional units to help him secure Beta Lyrae, but the Northern Front is by far the most important sector to us for this one reason..."

An emerald X with a five underneath it appeared on screen, then shrunk back onto the galactic map at the Cirios system.

"This is the reason the Jaaq'tah have been fighting so hard. We've had a marine outpost in the Cirios system since before the war, but the Jaaq'tah eliminated that outpost and landed ground forces a little under 36 hours ago. The reason the Jaaq'tah eliminated that outpost is because Cirios Prime is home to one of the Ancient's scientific facillities that survived the Great War largely intact. General Rakuseki and I authorized a mission to retake the planet using minimal resources. Thus far, we have all but re-established space superiority, but the ground battle rages on."

The Altaran Defense Minister's eyes narrowed at Blackblade. "You sure waited long enough to tell us about this, Minister Blackbalde."

"We didn't want to draw much attention to the planet. We wanted this operation to be quick and precise," replied Cameron.

"Either that or you're trying to keep the X for yourselves!" said the G'randal Minister of Defense.

"Don't be silly," said the Vaishan Defense Chief, his eyes changing from a dull aqua to a vibrant green. "Who do you think tipped off the Humans to the presence of the X?"

The G'randal Defense Minister gruntled, glancing over in the direction of Cameron, who retained that emotionless gaze.

"Once the X is secured, we'll need to abide by the McDowell Protocol," said Cameron in a calm tone.

"Are you sure that's really necessary? It's a Class V Terran-class world," replied the Altaran.

"It's the only way we can assure that there's nothing left for the enemy to use," replied the Vaishan.

"Very well," replied Kairos, the Hushain minister. "We will destroy the world."

...they are getting closer......

Yes....our creations are very tenacious combatants.....but their savagery assures that they not be allowed to obtain our secrets...

...I've already activated the Sentinels. Thus far, they have not engaged either side in any major way....

Once they cross the fail-safe, we must crush them.

Agreed.

Red Star Citadel

"They must be mad," said Captain Jack Simmons, looking at the priority message from the Alliance High Command. He glanced over to his superiors, Colonel Xato Kiyomeru and Special Forces Chief Alicia Clark, who retained sterile expressions. "The McDowell Protocol is going a bit far, don't you think?"

"Given the severity of the situation? No," replied Colonel Kiyomeru, taking a sip of coffee.

Alicia's dark green eyes made contact with the relatively young Simmons. "If everything goes according to plan, our boys will be long gone long before we blast that rock."

"And if they aren't?" replied Simmons.

"Collateral damage," replied Kiyomeru.

"Does the General know?" asked Simmons.

"He doesn't need to know," replied Alicia. "Especially because his wife is there. I told you sending Juno wasn't a good idea, Colonel."

"All of our other three-stars are in the South with Ruzhyo. Besides, given the mission profile, she's the best available."

Alicia mused over that fact for a bit. There was a high probability that Miss Perfect wouldn't make it back. Oh well, no sweat off her back. She was tired of the way she always flaunted her perfect marriage with Nathan in the first place. She was the type of woman Alicia never liked. Always prim and proper, perky and optimistic attitude, and always liked to throw her two-cents in when it wasn't asked for. How Natsumi made it to three-star elite status was beyond Alicia. She was just too....sterile.

"Just make sure Rakuseki doesn't find out," replied Alicia, staring daggers at Simmons to show she meant business. "I don't want any command overrides going on here. We blast that rock, with or without the X."

The Byakko-class strike carrier, Amadeus, launched thirty-two XF-14Es from their forward launch bays towards the planet below. These thirty-two shadowdrones alone had flown over 1,200 sorties in the past twenty hours alone. Now, they were tasked with maintaining aerospace superiority over the battlezone that the 901st Mechanized Infantry Battallion was now entering in.

The terrain was dramatically different from the unrestrained jungles that the NDI Marines had been battling in for the past day and was much more suited to the fast-paced GEV formations of the 901st, which was part of the reason they were selected for this mission. The area was largely flat, with a few hills and shrubs that could be used for cover, which suggested that the area had been terraformed. However, the flat area was incredibly narrow; no more than 350 meters across, which meant that it gave the defending Jaaq'tah forces a bottleneck where they could focus their fire. From space, tactical command could see that the Jaaq'tah had already dug out fortified positions that were hard to bombard from space without damaging the Draconian technological complex.

The XF-14Es flew over the treetops at hypersonic velocities, just mere feet above the jungle canopy. Six other XF-14Es with electronic warfare packs had flown ahead of the attack wing firing anti-radiation missiles and dropping jamming pods, which eliminated any Jaaq'tah surface-to-air defenses before they could get a shot off. The Jaaq'tah were smartly keeping their dwindling fighter force inside their protective defense envelope along that narrow plain, hoping to mass their fire to bring down the Confederate aerospace forces. "Amadeus attack wing is approaching the target area, sir," said Lieutenant Gretchen Mills, sitting inside the mobile command center that was coordinating the operation of the 901st battallion. "Commencing artillery bombardment on your command, Major," said the fair-haired support officer. "Operation: Iron Wolf is a go. I repeat, Iron Wolf is a go," said Major Todd Colton. "Fire at will."

Four of the twelve M9 artillery platforms had been assigned to this mission and enormous energy spikes filled the sensors of Confederate forces as the massive 175mm cannons opened up, firing a round every second. Less than five seconds later, the first 175mm rounds were hitting home, starting with aerial burst cluster munitions followed by standard high-explosive munitions. The firing sequence was handled by the M9's sophisticated combat computer which was tied in directly to the RAILS apparatus, which sequenced the rounds fired according to the targeting data provided by the tactical network. The final series of rounds fired were high-explosive stabilized liquid explosive munitions that fogged the battle area with SLEX before their electrical pulse timers set off an explosion. As the artillery bombardment wound down, the XF-14 attack wing swept down from the skies and were immediately met by another Jaaq'tah air force. Formations quickly broke apart as the fighters entered into a dangerous melee over the battle zone. Jaaq'tah air defense batteries went active, but as soon as they activated their targeting systems, artillery strikes were called in upon them automatically by Lieutenant Mills. As the air battle raged, the 901st launched their armored screen. Foxhound and Diamondback GEVs raced across the terrain at hundreds of miles per hour. Enemy resistance was little but that would soon change. The initial artillery barrage wasn't as effective as it had seemed from space. The Jaaq'tah had the ability to burrow deep underneath the ground to avoid the Confederate's superior support firepower. They prized the close-in battle.

By the time the 901st was a quarter-way across the plain, Arquiel suits began to spring up from the ground, plasma mortar blasts taking their toll. The Foxhound LGEV-PCs unloaded their infantry units and began to sweep across the terrain offering fire support while the Diamondback tanks unleashed a tidal wave of plasma from their dual rotary turrets. "We've lost six tanks and four personnel carriers," said Lieutenant Mills, watching as the IFF indicators went black. "Most of the enemy armor assets have been wiped out, but they have a clear advantage in terms of infantry. We're talking about at least two full battalions worth that survived the artillery strike."

"Tell SOCOM that they are clear to launch their mission," said Major Colton.

Lieutenant Natsumi Rakuseki looked out towards the battle area just a few clicks away and shook her head. Sergeant Kurosawa lifted his DIWS and slung it over his shoulders. The NDI was finally making their final push towards taking the complex proper, but the Jaaq'tah were putting up one hell of a fight. "Montoya, Uso, let's move out." Kurosawa lowered his DIWS and began in a moderate paced run along the edge of the jungle. Rakuseki huffed and activated her distortion field, leaping from branch to branch much like a primate, outpacing the slower Golem-suited troops.
the N.S.S. Star Knight's DEIMOS avatar, Starla, began to speak to the unit as a whole as they approached their next waypoint. "Given the extraordinary amounts of firepower being released on the battlefield, it should be relatively easy for you to slip past the Jaaq'tah forces, however, breaching the compound will not be as easy. We have units making reports of exceptionally powerful automated defense systems guarding the perimeter, so approach with caution."

Uso fell in line behind Kurosawa, trailing him from a distance of several yards.

Montoya did the same behind Uso, keeping in line and letting his drones keep him updated on what was going on ahead of them.

Kurosawa began to leap with the assistance of his jump jets, covering nearly fifty meters at a time with each 'hop.' This put out a bit more radiation, but his orders were to get their ASAP and he was going to do that. "Montoya, deploy the Draws4 drone 150 meters from your present location. Uso, hit this target," said Kurosawa, highlighting a sentry post half a click away with his TAG laser.

"Done, sir," responded Montoya.

"Affirmitive," Uso said as she took aim with her SSWS and unleashed a hail of 3.5cm anti-armor rounds into the target. She made sure to saturate the target with ammunition. She then continued to follow her CO with jumps timed just after his.

the Draws4 drone fully deployed as a large, egg-shaped unit with an eight-shot TAC missile launcher. As the unit raced away from their former position, the drone began to launch missiles at other sensor and sentry posts. As expected, Jaaq'tah retaliation was focused upon the Draws4 drone, which exploded in a hailfire of plasma bolts. "

Natsumi had been with this party only a short while, and she was already irritated at having them within her proximity. Kurosawa she just wanted to suffocate, or perhaps squish him with the battle armor she was wearing. Her lips began to form into a smug smile, unbeknownst to the rest, but the actual that processing through her head was dellusionally hilarious. It occupied her mind when some other unpleasantries would otherwise be disturbing her. Her armor was meticulously useful, and it had such fun things to use.

Kurosawa illuminated another target using his DIWS' TAG laser, a trio of patrolling Arquiel armored suits. Normally, he would've put a few 10mm rounds through their heads, but they needed to do this covertly. "Rakuseki, do me a favor and put those three down."

natsumi_rakuseki glanced from her current positioning within the folliage toward the voice. She peered through her helmet at Kurosawa, debating weather to take him too, but she thought better. Xato would have a fit, and would probably prolong her time within the battle. Sumi continued you stare for a long silent moment. Her molars grinding together in sheer frustration. "Why don't you do me a favour Kurosawa, and stop breathing. We'll call it even, huh?" Prepared herself as she spoke, her voice was held low, but she knew that he had heard. Natsumi felt the rush of power as the tritanium blades slid from her arms, her armor already readying it's self for her upcoming 'waltz' with the Jaaq'tah.

Kurosawa ignored her comment. Those three-stars were just a little too cocky and arrogant for their own good...

A grin crossed Uso's face underneath the protection of her golem suit. She was starting to like this new girl.

Uso deployed her own drones, sendint two out ahead of the group to try and get a good look at what was comming up. She eased off on her jump jets slightly. Instead of large jumps like Kurosawa was making she made a series of short hops, more sliding along the ground than jumping over it.

the three Jaaq'tah suits were carrying the standard plasma carbines, which suggested that they were rear echelon personnel. They were far from elite soldiers and probably were green-level troops by NDI nomenclature. The unit could see Jaaq'tah base camp, which was moving forces up towards the front and fortifying defenses. A team of Jaaq'tah engineers were moving in to repair the sensor stations that had just been destroyed, but by the time they were fixed, the unit would've been long gone.

Seven thousand meters due east of the battlefield, six Acolyte gunships sat in an otherwise quiet clearing. They were fully loaded and ready to pull. All they were waiting for now was the order. Sever sat in the cockpit of the Jupiter, his finger hovering motionless over the starter button.

"Montoya, you've got point," Kurosawa said, crouching low and taking aim with his DIWS, zooming in to get a better look at the area ahead. "There's just too many of them to try to slip by. Overlapping sensor coverage basically assures only Lieutenant Rakuseki could get through. We need to set off a diversion."

Montoya stayed silent, watching everyone else move into position as he did the same. His DIWS rifle was held at the ready as he followed Rakuseki's becon. When the order to take point came, he nodded and did so, quickly reviewing the drone scans to devise said diversion.

natsumi_rakuseki seemed to glide and slither through the amazon like jungle. Her armor's sheild in place, protecting her to a fault, but not really as much as she would like. She felt the adrenaline rushing through her veins as she approached the Arquiel armored troops. This was for the torment of being away from her love, for Xato being the ever piece of hologramized ass that he was. She monitored the trio for brief seconds, picturing faces of Kurosawa, Xato, and Nate's blonde secretary.

"Uso, load up a NARC beacon and fire it here," said Kurosawa, pointing towards a tree off in the distance. The NARC beacon was just that, a beacon that transmitted ambient signals to friendly forces. It was mounted on a standard TAC missile chassis but was a non-deadly munition.

Uso brought her TAC missile launcher to bear and fired off the NARC round. It implanted itself firmly in the tree and then started broadcasting.

the SCRIBOL-powered CPU unit began to broadcast signals to the air cavalry unit that was on standby. Seconds later, Major Colton's face appeared on Sever's screen. "Our team is in position. If you take the path I've highlighted for you, you'll hit the enemy behind their own defensive lines and get there uninterdicted. This is a raiding mission, so get in, do your damage, and get out."

"Montoya, Uso, get ready to move," said Kurosawa, looking at the tactical screen showing the friendly units in the distance. "When they hit, we're gonna need to move fast. I'm sure the Lieutenant can take care of herself."

Without any delay, Severs finger came down immediately upon the Jupiter's starter. Simultaneously, all six Acolytes started up at the same time, the anti-grav coils pushing them six meters above the land. Slowly, they all increased their lift to sixty five meters, and began pushing forward. They took their time accelerating, but it was a mere ten seconds before they reached the engagement envelope.

"Not a move until they start firing......" said Kurosawa.
jaded wanderer: Montoya readied himself for the sprint, staying stock still until the signal.

Uso was prepared as well, bringing her body into a almost a sprinters crouching position/

"Piece of cake..."She murmured to herself...Finally, she made her move, pouncing cat-like out from the bushes. Sumi had the silence of her armor on your benefit, plus the pro of being undetected by the enemy. She leaped forward, sword attempting to plunge through the chest of the Arquiel armed soldier. Much like a vampire hunter with his prey.

the Arquiel trooper never knew what hit him as the Xintium-coated blade sliced through armor and tore through his insides. The other two troopers jumped back in surprise as one of their own fell down. They raised their carbines, searching for a target.

To start, Mongoose and Hunter took their ships through the center of the base, pushing hard while they laid down anti-personnel fire with their rotary turrets. By the time they got to the other side of the base, the Jaaq'tah had become aware of the presence of enemy units behind lines.

While Mongoose and Hunter spread out and circled around for a second pass, Hollywood and Panzer pushed their Acolytes through in a cross pattern, laying down heavy missile fire while their transporting units fired extra TAC missiles they had brought along for this specific purpose. Hollywood and Panser, as well, split up and circled around.

"Go!" said Kurosawa, leaping with the assistance of his jets. He didn't care about concealing himself -- the Jaaq'tah had bigger fish to fry. He leapt over entire trees, touching off and launching again, covering a kilometer in a matter of seconds. They were almost to the point of no return. Just a little closer. "Hurry up, Rakuseki. We don't have time for you to bake them cookies."

Uso chose a slightly lower profile approach, bending forward and gunning her jump jets for maximum speed while using a series of hops to stay off the ground. She moved quickly and only inches off the ground as she followed Kurosawa.

the Jaaq'tah defenses erupted but the initial shock put them in a state of disarray. Arquiel suited troopers began to run out from their barracks firing plasma rifles up towards the gunships while trying to weather the storm of AP fire. Some fired plasma mortars towards the gunships, but the weapons were naturally slow and inaccurate and would be relatively easy to evade.

Montoya let Kurosawa pass him, keeping a rapid, hopping pace to stay close.

within that split second of their targeting, she had slid the blade from her opponent , and concealed herself back into the jungle. Praying the armor's ability to scramble any targeting system actually worked. Sumi slithered her way around to the left, hoping to catch another one off guard.. awaiting for the opportunity to strike once more, and take the other one right out after this.

the combination of explosions and comrades falling around him confused the two troopers, causing the second to fall prey to Natsumi's second strike

took out the second trooper with one swift move. A simple slice to the neck-like area of the armor. She decide to better of hopping back into the bushes, and fighting this one out right. The kill wasn't enough, she needed the battle. The use of all her limbs... mind and body.

All of the Thunderbirds were not just adept at surviving, but highly inclined to do so. Their various rigger-jacks provided them with a higher degree of control and stability than the normal neural interface allowed. Panzer and Hollywood crossed their paths as they flew through again, this time laying down fire on prioritized targets that had begun to respond to their first pass.

Simultaneously Mongoose and Hunter began picking off specified targets based on their immediate threat rating. Those with faster, more powerful guns would be first to receive a lovely, priority delivered collage of RAILS selected munitions. They evaded the mortars with ease, their hardened armor taking more than the brunt of lesser caliber shots.

The Warhawk units continued to assist the gunships, but they maintained a position of little revealance, meaning they would not be as likely to be hit by any stray blasts.

"C'mon, Rakuseki!" snapped Kurosawa, landing on the ground just outside of the complex's defense perimeter.

Natsumi Rakuseki growled , the sound reverberating through her helmet. Giving it a much more sound than was intended. She watched the trooper, not daring to blink. He seemed to have pissed his suit, and it malfunctioned. He was a chicken shit. "This one is probably Kurosawa...." Sumi thought. Busy giving orders, but not doing much else than urinating on a rock or two. Natsumi wasted no more time toying with the Arquiel. She disposed of him quickly, slicing him up to look like chopped up cucumber mess... Maimed, and butchered.

Kurosawa sent out two of his drones to survey the area ahead of him but no sooner did they cross the perimeter, the drones literally vaporized in a brilliant flash of light. "Jesus..." Kurosawa frowned. "....Just like a Lightning Field......."

Uso stopped just behind Kurosawa and turned around, making sure they weren't followed while they delt with the energy field.

made her way back to her party... hoping to dispose of Kurosawa too. She seemed to fantasize about it. It became a hobby...

the Thunderbirds continued to lay down light, targeted fire as they dodged the incoming fire from the amassing Jaaq'tah. When the majority of opposing units had revealed themselves, and the heat had been turned up a bit, the four Acolyte ships pulled back immediately, directing Jaaq'tah attention either towards their retreat, or at the incoming barrage of large-radius missiles that were fired from the Venus and the Jupiter, the two gunships that had not made their presence previously known.
Having selected their positions for maximum cross-fire, the Mars, Saturn, Pluto and Mercury lay down massive lines of fire from their cannons and turrets to keep Jaaq'tah forces stationed within their bases while the Jupiter and Venus continue to blow the hell out of it with their heavier missiles.

Kurosawa frowned, looking around for a weakpoint or something. "Ok......Uso........" he pointed towards a large bulbous node on the wall of the facility. He switched from the DIWS to his plasma enveloper and aimed. "Use your gun to activate the energy field. It's at its weakest when it's interacting with something. Then maybe I can blast a hole in it with this...."

Sever's unit was wreaking havoc as XF-14s swept across, strafing enemy troops as they tried to fight the group of gunships. Still, reinforcements of Cobra II attack flyers were visible on their radar screens. They were less than two minutes out. They might have to cut this little party short.

Uso turned around and did as she was told, firing into the field at a very slight angel just incase the field was solid enough to cause the rounds to bounce off. If they did, they wouldn't be coming back at her. "Just hurry it up," She said.

approached the trio..."Throw yourself in there, and I'll deactivate it." Smiled beneath her helmet.. her eyes and armor scanning the immediate area.

While the Jupiter and Venus continued to volley heavy missiles at the base point, the other four Acolytes broke off their perimeter containment and began emplacing themselves to receive the incoming Cobras. They continued to bombard strategic targets, but were far more concerned with surviving than how accurately their missiles hit.
right on the heels of Uso's last shot was a full-power plasma enveloper blast, which punched through the weak spot in the field and immolated the bulbous node. Seconds later, they could see crackling electricity along the walls. Sending his last drone, Kurosawa smiled as the field went down temporarily but was alarmed when tentacle-like arms began to repair the node. "We need to hurry. C'mon, let's get in!" Kurosawa jumped over the wall, crouching low and sweeping across his field of vision with his plasma enveloper. "....."

Uso gunned her jets and flew through at high speeds.

natsumi_rakuseki followed suit...

...as did Montoya

inside the compound was something that rivaled the most elaborate of Human structures. It seemed as if the entire inside of the complex was made of emerald crystal and marble. "Starla......where do we go next?"

before them, the blue-haired female appeared, examining her new surroundings. She raised her right hand, a blue light illuminating a pathway that led underground. "There."

Major Colton came in over Sever's com-unit. "Our team is inside, withdraw your forces to the waypoint and remain on standby. MACE units will be there to repair any damage and re-arm you."
marveled at the insides... she wished had the opportunity to actually inspect it all. A revel in the actuality of being inside something of this magnitude. Sumi had always been a spectator of the arts. She definitely considered this building one of those arts. The realization struck her hard... She had shared her life... several years now, with Nate. She knew she could never share the beauty of this structure. If she didn't make it out of here... She had too... Where was Nathan, anyway? Hopefully he was safe in Nerima with their cherished daughter.

the units broke off their assault, continuing to launch missiles at the base as they pulled away until they were out of missiles or out of range. They quickly fell back to the waypoint, opening up to reload.

Uso continued into the structure with her weapon raised. The internals failed to impress her. ~Where are the bad guys?~ She thought to herself..

the Cobras moved in to intercept the Acoyltes but were met with an unwelcome surprise as a fresh wing of XF-14s covered the Acolyte's escape.

Kurosawa followed the path highlighted by Starla but remained wary. "I thought there were extensive automated offensives....."

Starla replied: "There are, but for whatever reason, they have not been activated."

"someone goofed..." Uso said.

natsumi_rakuseki followed Uso, her hand grasping her shoulder. Holding her steady. "Watch your move... You're being thoughtless and selfish on all our parts." She chastised Uso for not being more careful... especially not knowing what they were dealing with
They don't "goof"...
Careless, wench.

Montoya silently appraised the design of this construct, trying to keep his mind on the sensors for hostiles. He had been an architect before re-joining and buildings like these always held a certain fascination for him.

Kurosawa let the ladies have their words. "Montoya, you've got point. I'll cover you."

"Your telling me there isn't something big that your Intel missed?" Uso replied as she followed the two men at a distance.

"Yessir." Montoya raised his rifle and slowly made his way inside, looking everywhere he stepped not only with his sensors but as much with his physical eyes as possible.

natsumi_rakuseki moved along behind them all, her own sensors activated. Perhaps they were more up to date or better technology. Who know, but she trusted none of them. They hampered her objective of getting the hell out as quickly as possible.

the complex was very sterile, almost like a doctor's office. Runic symbols were on the wall and lit up as Montoya and Kurosawa walked by. Kurosawa examined the symbols, cautiously putting his hand up to one. ".....Montoya, come here and feel this......" The symbol was radiating heat.

Sever sat in the Jupiter as the MACE repaired the light damage he had taken. One of the troops aboard his ship had been strafed by a plasma bolt, as were a couple other troops. The MACE patched them up, and one of the standby lance of Warhawks jumped in to take their place

natsumi_rakuseki inspected them also...running a few tests, if possible.

"It's hot, sir," Montoya said, unsure what that meant..."Motion detectors?"

A voice, what sounded like the voice of a young human girl, leapt out at them. "Why are you here.......?"

Kurosawa raised his plasma enveloper looking up, down, and all around him. "...Where is that voice coming from?"

"Well, my agent told me this was a great vacation spot." Uso said inside of her helmet, careful not to let the sound get out.

natsumi_rakuseki didn't bother to glance about, devices in her armor recording the voice. Keeping it for further inspection, "Answer it, Kurosawa.â€

ON: You are in "Cirios Prime:1" ( Draconian Research Complex )

Their internal combat computers would activate their cooling systems as rushes of cold air and supercooled electrostatic fluid pressed against the ECHO suits that allowed them to interface with their armors. The outside temperatures were over 3000 degrees Celsius, which was approaching the operational limits of their armor's life support systems. They would have to be careful not to overexert themselves in this environment. Their surroundings was much like the insides of the research complex they were just in, except everything was burning. About 60 meters ahead was a foyer that led to a larger courtyard filled with burning trees and marble statues.

This isn't what I had in mind," Kurosawa grunted, carefully watching his instrumental readings.

Natsumi tinkers forward, her eyes scanning the area. Running the basic testing needing to be done. Her lips curled into a light smile, reading the temp gauge. "You decided to follow. Though... It is 'pleasantly' warm in here. "

"Not the kind of pleasant warmth I'm interested in," the man replied wryly to the officer. "I suppose we go forward, right?"

They would find that their remaining drones were unresponsive at best. They didn't have the sophisticated cooling systems of their armors, thus they were largely ineffective in this environment. Despite the conditions, their thermal sensors were actually pretty effective because most everything would be cooler than the environment. It made it somewhat easier to pick out potential targets.

Natsumi had already started forward way before he had suggested. "No, let's go back." Sumi replied sarcastically. "I'd thought we'd have a picnic too... How does the courtyard fare to you?"

Kurosawa was concerned the things outside the armors weren't going to last long. Sensors, maybe weapons...the rapid temperature change had already screwed up some thing like his external speaker and microphone. "We'll need some sake, or at least whiskey," he commented, thinking "for me to get you drunk."

Sumi muttered incessantly to herself. Continually scanning her data bases. "I wonder how the others are doing..If they are, in fact, doing anything." She statement was implied not mere laziness, but if they were even still alive. Though, it was probably interpreted through the first. She moved into the courtyard. Wanting to examine the burning trees. Wondering how such a plus could exist, and why.

"Geez, what the hell?" Kurosawa scanned the things.

As Natsumi moved into the courtyard, she'd notice that the areas intricately landscaped and every tree was placed in a very pecuilar pace. As she moved closer to one of the trees, she saw it shifting at a steady rhythm -- it was breathing. She cringed a bit, her nose crinkling upwards. The same expression she would have if she had seen a big bug. Sumi, on the other hand, did happened to be facinated it by such. She skeptical, and cautious. " Kurosawa...." she mumbled into her mic. Edging a bit further from the tree. Just in case it had a fit like the one in the wizard of oz.

Kurosawa's gruff, terse voice barked again, "Ma'am?"

"Come take a look at this..." She spoke softly. Unlike her normal command like tone.

The tree remained docile, but along the ground, roots began to creep towards Natsumi ever so carefully.

"The thing wants you," Kurosawa pointed out, his hand tugging on her back slightly. The barrel of his weapon followed the tips of the roots. "I don't understand it any better than you do," he pointed out unnecessarily.

It was a distraction. Kurosawa had a split second warning as a green-white glow would appear in his left peripheral field of vision, followed by a powerful energy bolt aimed at the both of them.

Again her nose inches upwards, almost disgusted, but flattered in her own way. She did love plants, and had a garden at home of her own. She continued to watch it, side stepping, and moving backward to deflect it. Inching away from the beastie. "How cute." Sumi murmured to the tree.

"Argh!" Kurosawa grunted, bringing his gun to bear on the source of the light. The weapon slapped Natsumi across the chest as he whirled around, taking a glancing blow on the shoulder that exploded a shower of sparks from the armor. His SIAR didn't fire when he pulled the trigger, though. He could see it had bent on the impact, softened by the heat.

from the shadows emerged a short, stout humanoid figure donned in power armor, its arms glowing green with energy as it took aim at the two again, two bolts shooting this time, aimed at Kurosawa and Rakuseki respectively. Simultaneously, the root shot up from the ground towards Natsumi, its tip forming a razor-sharp edge intent on piercing through the operative's armor.

"Aw, son of a! Shoot it!" Kurosawa grunted, rolling to his left, towards the attacker and kicking at the enemy armor's kneecap. His plasma enveloper pointed up at the dark form shooting at him and he fired it at close range. God damn heat.

Natsumi stumbled back a bit, hardly loosing her balance with in the action. "Damn you, Kurosa....." Abruptly came to a halt in her damnation of Kurosawa. Sumi threw herself to the right, slamming herself into one of the trees. Vibro blades sliding outwards to oppose any attacks the knowledgeable tree might cough up. ~_~

The Sentinel seemed alarmed by Kurosawa's reaction speed and moved to aim his right cannon at Kurosawa before he could get there but found his feet knocked out from underneath him. He fell and fired wildly into the air, missing Kurosawa completely. Kurosawa's follow-up plasma bolt engulfed the Sentinel in superheated plasma. There wasn't even time for a death cry...

One of the trees branches came down to ensnare Natsumi in its surprisingly powerful iron-like grip. The root that had tried to stab her before retracted back into the heated ground.

Would never watch the Wizard of Oz again with out wanting to deplete the massive living, breathing, moving trees. Perhaps she remove the trees from the yard too, she pondered momentarily. Made a swipe at the root, obviously missing as she was engulfed by the tree's snake like grasp. Xato wouldn't be happy with what armor had been through, she thought. Scratches, dents, probably a melted place here and there. "Put me down!" She growled to the tree, attempting to chop at the branch, if she could.

Kurosawa would have snickered with the satisfaction he felt, but he adrenaline rush kept him scanning for targets. The tree branch. The DIWS. Select. Piercing. Fire.

The KEAP round cut through the air at nearly six kilometers per second and its aim was true, cutting through the branch partially enough to allow Natsumi to use her own strength to break through if she had to. Meanwhile, two more Sentinels emerged from two large walkways above the two.

"Urg," Kurosawa switched to incendiary rounds and strafed at the both of the emerging enemies to give Natsumi some cover.

The Sentinels had defensive shields just like the ones installed on the Golem and Phantom II and the rounds were largely unsuccessful in penetrating. The Sentinel to Kurosawa's right raised its left arm, the arm starting to glow brightly as its energy cannon went into its overcharge mode. The second Sentinel dropped down, landing on the ground with relative ease, directly across from Kurosawa. It didn't have the arm cannons of the other Sentinel, instead its right arm was a lot larger than its left, with a small metallic spike coming from its fist. The spike extended, blue-white sparks jumping from it. It wasn't electricity, but it seemed like something Kurosawa had seen before in his missions with the Vaishan -- raw psi.

removed herself from the tree, contemplating briefly why it was prone to her and not Kurosawa. She dismissed the thought, after grabbing a small piece of the tree which had been knocked off by the Kurosawa's shot. Swiftly she stored it within her armor, for further investigation. "Tell me about it." Sumi rolled her eyes into the back of her, whiping out the particle distruptor, hoping it would at least distract one Sentinel if not both from her team mate.

Kurosawa's plasma enveloper was waiting, and when the Sentinel dropped across from him, he unleashed its fury right at its face. He shields prepared for the hit from the other one.

The Sentinel learned quickly about the Human's most potent weapon and leapt to the side, his shields giving off a silver-white flash as they were depleted, but he was alive and well. It took the plasma enveloper three seconds to re-accumulate enough plasma for a shot, in which time the Sentinel closed distance, thrusting its right hand forward, and tendrils of blue-white energy arcing towards Kurosawa.

The other Sentinel fired down towards Natsumi, the overcharged energy bolt full of enough energy to totally knock out Natsumi with a direct hit.

Natsumi dived and rolled to the left. Rolling a bit before she fired two shots toward the Sentinel. Hoping it would penatrate the barrier. Her hopes, however, were probably slim to none.

Kurosawa scrambled forward and deposited his foot in the unshielded Sentinel's crotch as fast and as hard as the Golem would let him, hoping to surprise the thing and double it over forwards or backwards. His DIWS continued to spatter rounds, aimed for the thing's head. If he was luck, it's forehead would fall into the path of a round.

The peculiar nature of the particle disruptor meant that it was an excellent weapon against enemy shields and armor. The first shot blew a hole through the Sentinel's armor and the second disrupted the molecular structure of the Sentinel's armor, punching through. But the Sentinel remained standing. Against a Jaaq'tah unit, that would've surely scored a kill, but the Sentinel simply aimed at Natsumi again, firing off a rapid series of seven shots at her, scattering them across her path to make it harder for her to dodge.

The other Sentinel's forward momentum was slowed somewhat by Kurosawa's melee attack, which sent the psi waves arcing over Kurosawa's shoulder. If he could see behind him, he would see that the waves had no effect on the inorganic matter behind him. This weapon seemed only to affect living targets -- specifically those with the brain power on par or better than a Human's. The DIWS' 10mm rounds began to dig into the Sentinel's outer armor. Piercing, Explosive, Piercing, Explosive, over and over again as rounds chipped away bit by bit, eventually penetrating the creatures armored coating. The follow-up rounds blew up inside the trooper, stopping it dead in its tracks.

Did a bit of a roll and a leap up.. trying to run as fast and far as she could, attempting to seek cover before the Sentinel's blasts effected her and her suit. She didn't know how much the thing could precisely take, and with what it had all been through already. She tried not to press it any further.

"One nerima, two nerima," Kurosawa counted, locking his plasma enveloper on the remaining sentinel, even as the one he'd just killed slumped lifelessly to the ground. "Come on, woman," he thought to himself.

with all of the activity they were undertaking their suits were starting to sound the heat alarms. They were getting too hot.

the remaining Sentinel raised both hands, starting to overcharge its cannons. It was tracking Natsumi's movements now.

Paused a moment in fleeing to fire off a series of four shots. Figuring she was out of range of the seven before that. She didn't have direct and precise aim, but good enough precise to at least get a few hits in.

"Three nerima...fire," Kurosawa fired his enveloper at the sentinel, grimacing as the heat level went even higher into the redzone.

"Blasted suits." reading her gauges as well..She would have time to complain when she got back, or if...

The Sentinel jumped out of the way of the plasma enveloper blast and Natsumi's shots hit the wall around it, leaving it relatively safe for the time being. Its shoulders rose up, revealing two shoulder launchers. Four violet-white spheres launched from the weapons, two tracking both NDI troopers at a high-rate of speed.

Kurosawa moved for the doorway. Dammit. One of those WickedArms SM-1 shields would be really useful about now.

Natsumi, calculating the distance...between the building behind them, and the gauges within her suit. It wasn't a done deal it would be any better in the building. It wasn't a done deal that her suit would make either. She sighed loudly, her eyes once again rolling as she activated the stealth system on her suit. She felt a bit sorry for Kurosawa, not being able to help him directly at the moment. She made sure to move out of the way of any on coming 'traffic', AKA blasts from the Sentinel's weapons. Again, having time to directly aim, she fired out a series of shots. Using the same method he had earlier. Showering them about, making it near impossible for him not to get hit

Kurosawa shot the missiles headed for him, Macross-style. They didn't recognize him as elite for nothing. His suit, however, was lethargic, moving at a relatively crappy rate of speed due to the overheating.

The violet spheres lost their target locks and updated their target profiles and swung around, heading towards Kurosawa along with the other two spheres. They moved much slower than the ubiquitous NDI TAC missiles, but they had excellent tracking abilities.

Natsumi's sudden disappearance on sensors surprised the Sentinel, which began to search for her using its sensors, but couldn't find her until he detected an EMS spike. He didn't have any time to react as the first disruptor bolts shredded his shield and then tore into his armor, then the soft body underneath. The Sentinel was dead in the water, its arm cannons exploding before they could discharge their lethal payload.

"Fuck around..." She sighed into her mic. Her eyes glancing about for Kurosawa, hoping to be able to aid him if he was in a bit of a scrap with the missiles

"You okay?" Kurosawa asked after a little bit. "I'm hot."

Combat computers picked up no other targets and the cooling systems of their armors kicked into overdrive. On Kurosawa's suit, the feminine voice of his computer chimed in. "Drone system is back online. External temperatures have dropped by over 500 degrees Celsius..."

On Natsumi's suit, her stealth system was giving her computer reports of running at a reduced efficiency. Supercooled electrostatic gel pressurized against her body inside the suit, bringing down the temperature inside.

smiled to herself, happy to be cooler instead of icky and hot. "Let's get the hell out of here before something else comes to get us." She lifted her arm, pointing towards the building. "Thanks... by the way." She murmured, more than likely unaudible.

The blue ghastly figure appeared in between them again. "Your reaction speeds are some of the highest we've ever recorded for your species. You should feel honored."

It occurred to the Master Sergeant that it was probably wither the bushes or the enemy power armor that had generated the heat. If so, there were probably more around. "Alright. Remember the building could....fzzzzzzt.....fzzt...dammit...fzztt."

Kurosawa's communications systems were fried. He looked to Natsumi for guidance.

"Ahh... it's you." Almost liked the more than likely computerized little girl. "Thank you, I think. I was curious if you could tell me something?"

"What is it that you would like to know?"

"Two things, actually." She replied. "How are the others? Are they alive? And about the building behind behind us. Tell me about it, please."

The Minister of Defense: "Your comrades are currently in battle," replied the figure. "The building is none of your concern."

Kurosawa tapped his helmet to indicate he wasn't hearing jack shit.

Natsumi ignored Kurosawa. "Thank you, again. How do you purpose we get out of here, then?

The ghastly figure turned away from them. "Get out of where....?" Their surroundings suddenly changed to a spherical room with a green pillar in the center of it. Surrounding the pillar was a series of holographic screens -- similar to the room a DEIMOS computer was stored on a ship, except many times larger. At each corner of the pillar was a larger version of the Sentinels they had seen before, except they remained dormant.

Kurosawa looked agitated. Was this some sort of fucked up testing plan?

"These Sentinels are the guardians of the remnants of the Draconian Empire," said the ghastly figure. "Complexes like these are spread throughout the galaxy. Most would've perished long before now, so for that, you are deemed worthy to learn a bit more about us."

Natsumi nodded. "Appreciate your kindness, little one. You remind me of my own child. Precise, and full of things I know little about. "

"You've heard of the term......tabula rasa, yes?" replied the figure.

The master sergeant took time out to check the temperature gauge.

in this room, it was rather cool - only 19 degrees Celsius.

checked to make sure all was well, removing the helmet from her suit. It felt good to breath, to be able to feel the air on her skin. To be out of the enclosure. Sumi blinked a few times, her hazel eyes skimming about once more, before returning to the girl.

Kurosawa's hands went to his helmet, and removed it, revealing his sweaty face, tanned, extremely oriental, hard-looking, lined with age. He hung the helmet from his left hand. He looked at Natsumi. She wasn't ugly by any means.

Wasn't, matter of factly. Was quite the opposite of ugly. It wasn't exactly gorgeous, but could be defined as pretty.. or beautiful, as Nate had often told her. Casted her gaze to Kurosawa, offering a small smile. Tired one.. stressed as well. "Yes, I've heard of it."

"We've been monitoring your race and so many others over the past hundred thousand years and we've determined that the seven successor races have outlived their purpose and we've decided to terminate the Artemis Project," the figure replied.

Natsumi's brow furrowed a bit..." The Artemis Project?"

"You Humans, along with the rest of your 'Draconian League' races are our creator's creations. When they left this galaxy, we were tasked with monitoring your progress."

Are you terminating the project of monitoring, or terminating the species... ?

"As I've said, the successor races have outlived their purpose. It is time for us to move on to another operation."

Natsumi nods, understanding.

"..."

Perhaps we can be of service, somehow?

"I am afraid not."

"We are already preparing for our clean sweep operation," a screen of mechanized factories similar to the AIMs operated by NDI bases building millions of Sentinels. "We've been preparing for the past two decades."

looked down, frowning. She seemed a bit disappointed at the refusal. She felt a certain sense of connection with this place and this girl. Natsumi's head snapped up. "Why?"

"It is what our creators demanded of us."

"There is more than one creator..."she said to herself. Again she looked at Kurosawa, pondering if he was going to join the conversation.

Kurosawa remained silent, taking all this information in. She was the officer, let her do the talking.

How many creators?

"There is only one creator.......the almighty Draconians....." replied the figure.

"I assume you are among the strongest of your species, we shall release you so you may die valiant deaths with your brethren" said the figure. "Any further questions?"

"You know you're not going to be able to complete your mission, right?" Kurosawa asked.

"That is, as you Humans like to say, laughable. My calculations give us a 98 percent success ratio."

98% isn't enough.

"According to my calculations, you can only hope to cause a prolonged stalemate," replied the figure.

"You really think you can win?" Kurosawa asked.

"Stop it, you fool!" Natsumi growled at Kurosawa

"Not in your lifetime," Kurosawa put a DIWS round in the thing's face. "Enough touristry, Ma'am?"

Natsumi put her free hand against her face... muttering obscenities. 'Why did the stupid one have to follow her?' she wondered.

The figure stared at Kurosawa blankly as the round ricocheted off the armored hull of a Sentinel. The Sentinel remained still. "Please do not discharge your weapons in here."

Draconian Alliance Command Center
The Erdani Citadel, Draconis Prime

The Erdani Citadel was perhaps one of the most beautiful examples of architecture of the past thousand years, incorporating the more classical styling of Humanity and combining it with the more abstract arts of the Altaran and Vaishan. It was the home of the Draconian Senate and served as an international ground of neutrality where the civilized nations of the Draconian Sector could come together to discuss all matters relevant. Against the lush green backdrop of Draconis, the Erdani Citadel stuck out like a sore thumb, with its vibrant ivory coloring catching the eye as soon as one saw it. It was a symbol of pride and strength for the Draconian League.

While on the surface it was a massive complex filled with shopping centers and even a museum, underneath was an even more spacious military installation that housed the senior commanders of the Draconian League's Allied Forces. It was here that the efforts of all member states were coordinated into a single unit. It was divided into smaller sectors, each exclusive to the individual race.

Defense Minister Cameron Blackblade obviously spent the majority of his time in the Human wing of the installation, with an office that was more like a small mansion rather than the private study of a senior military commander. Inside was a library with books ranging on almost every subject, several of which Blackblade had penned himself. The floor was made of fine Khirennium wood from the sacred forests of Draconis Prime, which was unrivaled in its beauty and steel-like sturdiness. His desk was situated in the southwest corner of the room, almost as if Cameron liked to hide in the spaciousness of his own quarters, but that was hardly the case.

Cameron Blackblade was an enigma to most. Not even the psychoanalysts in the intelligence service of the NDI had been able to figure him out because he was just so calculating. Every move he made was deliberate, as if it had been planned beforehand. He was a master of saying so much that he never told you anything, which was part of the reason the press and political establishment hated him. It was ultimately his downfall as the commander-in-chief of the Nerimian Defense Initiative, because he did not understand, or rather, simply didn't want to understand that such a high-profile position required one to be on good terms with the press.

When he returned to the game as the Defense Minister, the outcry was loud and droning, but Cameron weathered the storm. His defense policies were sound; no one could ever attack him on the facts. Cameron had finally taken the gloves off and went after those who attacked him in the media with a vengeance. Despite his balls-to-the-wall approach, he was the last man standing when the smoke cleared.

As the Defense Minister, Cameron controlled the administrative apparatus of the military, how many fleets would be commissioned, how many ground legions would be raised, what new weapons systems would be pushed for, et cetera. Still, Cameron had the general's mentality.

The situation in Cirios was a mission that he had authorized and he wanted to see this through. Using his high-level clearance, he looked into the Special Forces Division's extensive data files of elite operatives and their operational status. The other Alliance members had already submitted their own elite units and now Cameron was searching for the best of the NDI's litter.

While Cameron was running queries against the massive database, a knock was heard against the hardwood door. The Khirennium wood transmitted the sound crisply to Cameron's ears. "The door's open,â€

Location: Draconian Ruins, Cirios

The interior of the green portal was a lush, jungle-like environment, much like the dense rainforest they had to battle their way through to get to this particular point. But in the distance, they could see a large courtyard many football field-sizes wide. Their sensors weren't showing them anything out of the ordinary, but their own internal warrior instincts would tell them to think otherwise.

Montoya's drones continued cycling until they were all repaired and recharged, then he sent two out for long-range recon and kept the other two close by. Meanwhile, his eyes quickly scanned the area and the data the drones sent in. "Uso? Uso, are you here?" he sent over the radio.

Uso did the only thing she could do in this situation, move foward slowly and keep an eye out for anything that could be useful. Her suit was in the process of recalling the drones she had sent ahead of herself as she recived the message from her teamate. "I'm up ahead of you a ways," She replied

A friend-or-foe marker appeared over her position and Montoya headed for it. "Gotcha," he sent back. "Any ideas where we are?"

In the distance, a faint EMS emission could be picked up by Uso's sensors, which was at the low microwave band. It was constant, fluctuating in a very narrow range, which her combat computer began to try and identify the source.

"Deeper inside of the complex, looks like a... hold on I'm getting a reading," Uso moved closer to the EMS emission, but kept close to the walls and plants to use them as cover.

Montoya almost told Uso to be careful out of reflex, but he figured she already knew that...instead he just signaled that he heard her and followed about fifty yards behind her. As they moved nearer to the courtyard, their sensors began to receive a great deal of interference -- electronic countermeasures! Someone was there.

"Flank the right side of the Object," Uso told Montoya as she slowed down. She waited for her partner to get into a better position before moving foward right towards the emissions.

The ECM was starting to work on their radios. Montoya only received a garbled transmission.

"Uso, I don't like this. Suggest you send a drone instead." The sniper stopped when static flooded the airwaves, then jet-hopped up to where Uso was and tapped her on the helmet to get her attention before tapping the side of his own helmet.

Behind them, the drones they encountered in the previous hallway began to drop silently from the ceiling, covered in the dense vines and vegetation that covered the walls and ground. With the intense ECM blanket, it would be hard for either of them to see them before hand.

Uso recived garble from Montoya. She sent a drone out to the right to flank the EMC signal and made sure it was highly visible. For communication she went low tech, pressing her helmit against Montoya's, "Have you seen that blue girl?" She asked without using the communication system. bumping helmits was an old divers trick and hopefully montoya would be able to hear her.

"No," he replied, realizing what she was doing. "Are you expecting a trap too? 'Cause I sure am. We should find an exit before we go any further. I'd hate to be boxed in here when those drones come back."

A bright flare lit up the entire courtyard sufficiently enough to wash out their optical, infrared, and ultraviolet sensors for a few precious seconds. In the midst of the flash, a solitary Sentinel charged forward, brandishing a large, elliptical shield on his left arm and an energy blade in his right. He closed on them quickly, a high-pitched, resonating battlecry giving them the only warning they would have.

It was only a few moments between the loss of all sensors and Uso's upward jump, using her suits jets to propell it upwards as fast as it would go. She braced herself for the impact with the roof, which would undoubtably happen but it was better than facing the unknown. She could only hope montoya had a similar idea. "Montoya?" She inquired over her comm system, doubtful of its effectiveness, as she came back down with her Pseudorecoiless repeater ready to fire.

Montoya closed his eyes, swiveling around toward the sound and took a guess at where the Sentinel was. The guess was verified a few moments later as he heard footsteps coming toward him. Remembering where Uso had been, Montoya jet-hopped over the tree tops and came crashing down fifty meters from where he had been. It was better than running into trees blindly, for now. Waiting to see if the creature had changed directions, Montoya recalled his drones and started requesting their passive sonar information to try to triangulate the Sentinel's position. The fourth would be left using normal sensors so he would know when those were useful again. Now he could have a chance of keeping out of its way and maybe even get a good shot or two at it.

The Sentinel attacked with its blade a mere second after Montoya vaulted over him, taking a few more steps to slow down his momentum. Then the flares faded and the ECM on their systems was effectively negated as their own ECCMs finally adapted to the level of countermeasures, giving them quick glimpses of enemy positions. They could now see the eight drones creeping up behind them and the large, hulking Sentinel with the shield and blade. There was also another two Sentinels in the distance with dual arm cannons, but they remained passive for the time being. The drones, however, mvoed out, breaking into two groups, one focused on Montoya, the other focused on Uso. They attacked with pulse lasers.

Uso switched her external speakers to full blast, "Is that the best you can do!" She taunted as she came down on the other side of the sentinal that Montoya had landed on. She unleased a barrage of repeater fire at the creatures legs. She kept the angle low so she wouldn't over penitrate and hit her teamate. She used her jump-jets to propell herself past the sentinal at a distance of only 10-20 feet staying just out of range of the close combat weapons and ignoreing the drones for the moment

The Sentinel was surprisingly quick, raking his blade across the surface of the ground as he turned to face Uso, springing into the air over the explosive shells and slashing downward with its energy weapon, creating an energy wavefront that cascaded down towards Uso at speeds approaching the speed of sound. It was a slicing/concussion wave that could literally go 'through' its target if it struck. Uso's trajectory brought her at an angle to the sentinal, just bearly avoiding the wavefront by mere inches. The concussive impact of the wave was pretty powerful, pulverizing the groud at the point of impact and creating a 4 meter long gash in the ground that literally vaporized the rock.

The passive sonar didn't have very much use, but Montoya was content with just knowing where the Sentinel was. He had reopened his eyes and was putting a little safe-distance between him and the Sentinel when the sensors hacked through the interference for precious seconds. It was too late for dodging the drones, he took several glancing hits before pegging each of them with SAIR bursts. Switching to his DIWS, Montoya fixed his bulls-eye on the back of the Sentinel's knee on the sword arm side. His mind went blank as his focus increased. Three bursts of three bullets each sped toward the Sentinel as fast as Montoya could squeeze them off...a piercing, incendiary, and explosive shell in each trio. Uso unleashed another barrage of fire, keeping the angle of the shots upward so overpenitration would go above Montoya's head. Hopefully it would force the sentinal to duck down and stay put so montoya could take it apart as Uso continued to move about at high speed.

The Sentinel did something surprising as the rounds struck it. The combination of rounds put a great deal of concussive energy on it and as it descended to the ground, it rolled itself into a metallic ball, racing along the ground at high speeds as the drones decended into action, covering the Sentinel with a deluge of pulse laser fire. Two drones had been destroyed by Montoya's previous attack, so the drones reorganized themselves, three to each target.

For the moment the Sentinel was delt with and Uso turned her attention to the drones. She targeted the drones attacking montoya with her reapeater using short controled and well aimed bursts as she continued to slide about the floor with her jump jets. Keeping tabs on the Sentinel, Montoya switched back to his SAIR and jet-slid over to Uso. "I'll deal with the drones, rocket that Sentinel!" he yelled at her.

The Sentinel's ball metamorphosis was a defensive mechanism designed to minimize damage to its active combat form, allowing its self-repair systems to work while simultaneously acting as an advanced movement system that gave it unparalelled speed and maneuverability in its class size. Using the diversion of the drones to cover itself, it turned rapidly and came racing towards Uso at nearly 200 miles an hour from her left. It's spherical size made most bullets ineffective against it and using an explosive the caliber of a TAC missile would be suicide at this range. Uso kept moving while trying to take down the drones. Her high speed would keep her out of the way of the sphere if only by a few inches. She would keep the sentinal occupied while dealing with the drones, still wanting to take them all out before dealing with the ball. The Sentinel accelerated to compensate for Uso's speed and when the time was right, it struck! The ball pushed off from the ground, shifting from ball to humanoid form, its shield held out in front while its energy blade lashed out to slash Uso across the center of mass.

From his position covering Uso's back, Montoya whirled around as the ball came closer. When the Sentinel unfolded, he fired at the thing's armpit and side as it raised its arm for the slash. Uso used the only object she had at the moment to block, her repeater. She brought the weapon out to parry the attack while roling with the hit. She had to contort her body off to one side as she brought her legs up into a... ball. With the attacker's sword pushed off to one side the shield would be countered by Uso's legs. As they crashed into the ground Uso was rolled backwards and the sentinal tossed over her head and away from her body.

The bullet found its mark but a single round wasn't going to do the trick. The Sentinel converted into ball form again as it flew over Uso's body to cushion the impact, converting to humanoid form again as the remaining two drones dropped down to either side of it. The Sentinel growled, obvious weakpoints in its armor now visible to both troopers along its right side and left thigh. The last two attack drones raced forward, focusing fire on the somewhat prone Uso while the Sentinel went after Montoya, its shield held out in front to deflect any incoming rounds. The Sentinel led off with a energy wave attack similar to the one it used on Uso, the crescent wave coasting along the ground at high speeds with the intent on splitting Montoya in half.

Montoya rolled to one side, then fired several rounds at the Sentinel's blade and its head. But the Sentinel had already adjusted its shield to cover its weakpoints, the rounds glanced off the shield harmlessly and the Sentinel continued coming, closing the distance between them and thrusting its blade forward towards Montoya's chest.

Uso used the energy of the backwards roll to bring herself upright again, bringing her SIAR to bear on the last two drones as she tossed her, now ruined, repeater off to the side. After two quick bursts at the drones she switched over to her missle launcher and waited for an oppertunity to blast the sentinal.

Montoya lept to the side, then righted himself and jetted into the air. "Fire!" he yelled at Uso.

Uso shrugged as she fired a missle into the back of the sentinal, hoping that Montoya would have gotten the distance he needed to remain uninjured.

The Sentinel growled as Montoya leapt away and just as he was getting ready to persue the target, he turned to see the missile coming towards him. Before he could raise his shield, the SLEX warhead vented and the electric pulse detonator set off the explosive, the concussive force alone blasting the Sentinel apart. The resultant heat blast scorched the walls and the concussive blast wave pulverized the walls and ground around the point of impact. "Oh, s-" Montoya had landed fifty meters away as the missile left the launcher, out of the kill zone, and was in the process of hitting the ground when the shock wave hit him. It caught him up and flung him through a stand of trees into the wall of the room hard enough for him to feel something give...if it was his ribs or just the crunch of the trees that had cushioned the impact, he didn't know yet.

Uso couldn't help but smile and crank her speakers up to full power again, "So... Have we passed your test yet?" She asked, hoping to get the attention of the blue form that they had spoke with previously.

The blue mist figure appeared before them again. "Impressive. Your friends have done well for themselves as well." Their surroundings changed to a room lit with dark blue lights with a pair of docile Sentinel guards flanking the blue mist figure. "You are truly among the top of your respective species."

Montoya pulled himself to his feet and made his way to Uso's side, keeping his SAIR ready and ignoring the throb in the back of his skull.

"These Sentinels are the guardians of the remnants of the Draconian Empire," said the ghastly figure. "Complexes like these are spread throughout the Milky Way Galaxy. Most would've perished long before now, so for that, you are deemed worthy to learn a bit more about us."

A compliment, even from someone threatening to kill you, was still a compliment and it did draw a smile out of Uso. She brought her speakers back down to normal levels, "Well I'm honored," She said as she opened a private channel with montoya, "You ok in there?" she asked.

"You've heard of the term 'tabula rasa', yes?"

A grunt was all the catgirl got as an answer. Montoya was going to be fine. Already, Montoya's armor was injecting his body with painkillers and other drugs that would control the injuries he had sustained in battle. To the ghost-figure, the sniper nodded. "Yeah, I've heard it. It's Latin. What does that have to do with us?"

"We've been monitoring your race and so many others over the past hundred thousand years and we've determined that the seven successor races have outlived their purpose and we've decided to terminate the Artemis Project," the figure replied.

"Wow... that has a whole 'end of the universe' conotation to it," Uso said, stating the obvious.

"Not quite. We are simply moving on to a new project. While it has been worthwhile monitoring your species' development over the centuries, we feel that we can do better. Humanity and the rest of the successor states are an experiment that have run their course. We must prepare the galaxy for a new epoch of new races."

Uso nodded, "I take it your not planning on moving everyone to a new location?"

"We are already preparing for our clean sweep operation," a screen of mechanized factories similar to the AIMs operated by NDI bases building millions upon millions of Sentinels. "We've been preparing for the past two decades."

Montoya frowned. Everything everyone had done through history had been worth nothing more than information in a science project? The advancement of mankind was going to be brought to a halt by a race that felt humans and other sentients were obsolete? This is not acceptable, he thought. But the thought was just that...if he said it aloud, it might prevent any hope of getting out of this situation alive.

"Amazing," Uso said, "How'd you do that without being detected? Your undoubtably going to need battleships too for this so your facilities must be truely massive and to remain undetected for so long..." She found this fascinating, playing her game of 'what if'.

The Sentinel commander let out what could only be described as a laugh. "We must maintain some of our secrets. After all, we have enough respect for your combat skills that we are going to allow you to return to your civilizations to die a valiant death when we begin Tabula Rasa."

"What of the other two of our party? Are they being released as well?" asked Montoya.

"As well they are," replied the commander. "Oh, before we send you two on your way....." a phosphorescent blue-green rod with Draconian runes along the side appeared floating before Montoya. "I believe your civilizations sent you to find this."

"Well that about wraps things up then..." Uso thought outloud, "Come on Montoya, lets grab that thing and head back to the ships."

Their surroundings changed again and they were back where they started, in front of the red and blue doors. There they would see Rakuseki and Kurosawa and strewn about them the bodies of dozens of dead Jaaq'tah combat troopers. Sitting on a heap of of dead Jaaq'tah was an unarmored Human soldier with dark brown hair, holding a 11-inch long metallic rod in his left hand. To his right was another female soldier holding a large rifle similar to the one Uso carried, and the other was a short, stocky soldier holding dual plasma envelopers. "Took you four long enough. I'm Lieutenant Commander Xero Hokusha. I'm here to escort you out of this hell hole. The combat situation outside has changed. We need to haul ass."
