Approved Character Akatayanagi Merna

Hey there!

Bio looks like a good start to me. Don't think being on all 3 plots at once at different times would work since they all take place at the same time. The Aeon and Eucharis are both larger Plumeria class gunships, while Sakishima is a much tinier Chiaki class escort, about less than half the size. The Sakishima is also an 18+ plot, so there is mature content. I'll say, APPROVED for the Sakishima if you decide you want to join us. But I do note that you have the other two plots listed first, so will let their GM's get their 2 cents in before you make your decision :)

I wasn't planning on being on all three at the same time. I know they all have their missions. Was just thinking of maybe being on one, then eventually transferring to another...and finally a third. But really going with whichever is in more need of her first.

I like the idea of military personnel occasionally rotating. It's realistic and gives players a wider set of other players they get to RP/write with.

Since @Nashoba runs the SSS and the Aeon, I will let him give the plot approval for this character.

Also thanks SmokeEmpress for your conversations with me about this character. I appreciate that you went the extra mile to ask about and refine the concept as you developed her.

Not a problem @Wes. I am just really happy that I can develop her in a way that I want and still be able to make it work in the environment that she is in! It will be really interesting to see how things develop for her outside of training!

No offense intended here, but why in the name of Christ would any military system ever accept her while she's blind? ESPECIALLY when the technology exists to literally build her new eyes from scratch in less than an hour? The basic process of joining pretty much any military includes a physical to make sure you're going to be capable of matching the duties required for the area you're in, and I'm pretty sure being blind is a fairly major disqualifier for combat duty. I'm not sure why the SSS would accept a blind computer technician either, but that's up to Nash. Again, with the basic requirements for being able to do your job.

Wait wait wait, her parent's let their child, in a yamatai society where body corrections and swaps are commonplace, grow up with a huge disability and push her to a job that really needs vision to do correctly?

Why are her parents huge jerks?

The Star Army wouldn't accept a blind person (in fact, they didn't even accept any baseline humans for a time due to their "disability" of not being able to fly like Nekovalkyrja), but the SSS is not the Star Army. It's a civilian government institution and, to an extent, an "equal opportunity employer."

I'm curious as to how the Minkan would retain the blindness. Is this some sort of issue that carries over to her ST copy's buffered neural patterns?

In the conversation we had, we figured:
  • She has the sight disabled by choice as part of body user options, or...
  • She still sees, but her mind can't make sense of the data. But she could still send the visions to someone who could.

Wes, being an equal opportunity still doesn't change the fact that no company would willingly hire someone who is LITERALLY incapable of doing the job. You aren't required to hire a paraplegic on as a freaking laborer.

And even if she's not in the Star Army, she's apparently going to be serving on frontline combat ships, which, at least to me, kinda impies she needs to be capable of passing the same minimum requirements as everyone ELSE on that ship. Why would the Star Army agree to a liason that actively ENDANGERS their crews in dangerous or time critical situations? It's the same reason contractors who are serving outside of secured areas in Iraq and Afghanistan are required to pass rather strenuous requirements.

As a Minkan, you don't need to your eyes to read because you can directly communicate with computers and load code and webpages directly into your mind.

Okay, I have updated the character page to make it proper for the Scientific Studies Service. Including a SSS NO-M1-2a - Mantis Power Armor which is configured for use as a Hostile Environment suit. So it has my blessings as a SSS character. Now its up to Wes or Gunsight to pass it for their plot.

I'm going pass on this character for the Aeon as I already have an SSS NPC character who is well established.

As stated in my earlier post, if SmokeEmpress chooses to join tue Sakishima she is approved. :) we have never had a science officer, so should be fun

I've also looked over the character page and I don't see any changes to recommend (e.g. she fits the setting and she's ready for play). So Approved from me too.

@SmokeEmpress, is the Eucharis now your first choice?

Thank you @Nashoba for updating with the right equipment needed. I really do appreciate it!

As for those who question her capabilities, she is not as defenseless as someone true human would be. I even put in her bio that, with the aid of infrared sight, she can defend herself as necessary, so she is not as much of a liability. However, yes, I was smart to have her be in the SSS since, technically in even the liaison position, she is not required to be out in the field. She would be mostly on the bridge working from there to help facilitate things as needed. Only if she was needed as an interpreter would she be needed off ship. And no, she does NOT need to see to hear and understand what someone else is saying! Nor would she need to see to do code. There are many blind people that can do code just as well as one with sight because there are programs out there that do the reading for them. There are even people who are blind that role play with the same systems.

I had picked three of the ships that I knew would be able to accept her easily and, since Gunny really wants her, and maybe need her more? I think I will go with him, if that's alright with you. I know you are full, but I'm fine either way.

Thank you all!!
