Can someone clarify how DR works?

Looking at the page for Damage rating.

https://wiki.stararmy.com/doku.php?id=damage_rating

Trying to get a better understanding of how the DR of a weapon interacts with the DR of the vessel's hull.

Example: If a hull of a vessel has a DR of 20 is hit by a weapon that does DR 5 hull takes 5 points of damage but the ship remains intact until such time as the DR of the hull is depleted?

I'm asking because on the DR page is says a Starship weapon of DR 5 is Total annihilation weapon

But the smallest starship has a DR of 10.

Essentially. The heavier weapon of a capital-class vessel or pocket battleship is fully capable of essentially crippling a corvette/gunboat after the first shot. In general, the DR is more or less a guideline to "This is what you have, and this is how badly this should screw your shit up.", than a set of ideal rules to use all the time.

As Exhack said. When it comes down to it though, you (or the GM) have the final say on how much actual damage is done, and how it will look (how you describe it for plot purposes, etc, etc)

Total Annihilation as a qualificative is unfortunately somewhat misleading since it describes a gradual disintegration-like effect which might consume the vessel entirely if it's large enough after sufficient exposure more than anything else.

When a ship loses SP, it takes damage (It's the GM's discretion on what is damaged). Damage can be to engines, systems, or minor hull breaches.

When ALL of the SP are depleted, it means the ship is out of commission--it has been pounded into an unusable, irreparable hulk.

A good pirate would try to disable a ship without damaging it any more than necessary.
