RP: Cirrus Station [Episode 10] Cumulocirrus

Kumiko took up a position on the other side of Sgzyr and Amber, her variable weapon at the ready, looking for whatever it was that was making those noises. She wasn't quite sure what she'd been expecting to do when she'd gotten the job offer here, but it certainly wasn't rescuing a squad of people she'd never met from a threat she'd never heard of. Of course, being an engineer she hadn't really been expecting to work as security to start with. Not that she didn't have plenty of experience working as infantry, but she'd been looking forward to actually getting a chance to get back to her work. And Chi... odds were she wouldn't be seeing Chi anytime soon here.

Once again, Kokuten's face met the snowy floor again, the scenery before him flying upward to meet him head-on. This time his golem arm locked around the handle of his rifle as he was dragged down, and then flung through the air, the entire room blurring across his vision.

Clunk! Splop! went the Captain's body as he slammed into the pipe back first, before falling to the ground. His legs bent uncomfortable as he landed square on his knee plates and landed hard on his shoulder, the Doctor's legs scrunched uncomfortably beneath himself. Aching pains pervaded his body, his armor having been dented somewhat by the strike. The reinforced spine was tough and flexible enough to absorb the shock up his body, but he felt a bit of bleeding at his shoulders where his grafts had been jerked slightly from his skin. Even his head throbbed a bit, after having been tossed through the air by an angry beast.

Fear riddled his mind, considering the difference in strength, and just how resistant this beast was to dying. That short moment on the snow, reeling in shock, he began to realize just what they were up against. If he wasn't any more careful, he was going to die.

He rolled over, trying to push himself up, but he had taken too much time. The beast was getting ready to pounce on his position, he could see that much through his heated, gray-scale vision. Still, he tried to stand in the middle of a run, pushing his foot against the ground. As soon as he applied a little pressure to move, right as he was getting off the snow, he felt searing pain shoot up from his knee into his brain. The tendons in his legs had been stressed to an unreasonable degree when he had been thrown, and the pain had been hidden by the cold.

Splop! went the Captain, falling into the disturbed snow below him once more, landing on his shoulder. Needles and hot metal poured up the side of his nerves as his brain registered the pain and the danger he was in. His heart was beating a mile a minute. Mildly wounded from all the aerial strain, Kokuten did what all he could do: Take advantage of one position where his aim couldn't be disturbed, and fire.

He propped his elbow on the floor, holding his rifle to bear from his laying position, and squeezed the trigger.

For what it was worth, although her Tactical System could use local and remote sources for data, Tweak herself worked with what information was at hand. This included observational data and not solely what was present (or not present) on the networks. That gave her a measure of adaptability and, combined with luck and innovation, was so far enough to get her through.

Hopefully, this encounter would continue that trend.

The monster was catching up...strike that, it had caught up and was going to try to bash her with its head. Tweak stopped, redirected her momentum toward the wall, kicked off of it to gain height, and launched herself above the quahhg as its head passed under her. Provided physics for objects of large mass still held true, its body also passed under, allowing a living platform for the Freespacer neko to land on. Her body began forming objects beneath her skin as this happened, preparing for a few different contingencies.

Unfortunately, it wasn't working fast enough to do what she wanted to do at the moment: Separate the quahhg's vertebrate. The blades she would need wouldn't be ready, so Tweak only used the opportunity of being airborne over the creature to get a better view of the entire thing: size, mass, material composition (external only), arrangement of limbs...these were logged along with other things that might be useful later on. Joints were always vulnerable, as were sensory organs such as the eyes and nostrils...

Tweak took it all in, her eyes being drawn to the tail as she began her downward arc toward the monster's back. That could be trouble, but now she was ready for it.

It seemed like Blake was getting very well acquainted with falling hard to the floor today. For the second time, he groaned and lifted himself up. His vision blurred over the receding shape of Lenny and the Quahhg. Weary arms lifted the rifle held tight in his hand and tried to aim at the beast. His eyes wouldn't focus. He took the one-in-a-million chance that the shot would hit and fired again, this time without the benefit of point-blank range and perfect eyesight.

She decided on her course of action.

Quickly looking around, Serra absorbed everything that was happening around her while slowly breathing in through her nose, and quickly formulated a plan of action as well as variable responses to reactions. Closing her eyes, she exhaled through her mouth and then reopened her eyes quickly.

Using the super human strength her species was born with, and her advanced strength even among them due to the density of her muscle mass, Serra tore her arms out of the grip the Quahhg had around them. Her right arm shot down and, sliding within a gap between teeth, where her entire arm then locks in place forcing the lower jaw to stay open. Looking up, she quickly inspected the hard palate of the Quaggh's mouth and settles on a target, while her left hand's fingers tightened around each other, forming a "spear head."

When the Quaggh's mouth reached maximum expansion, she thrusted her left arm into the beasts mouth, intending on piercing the palate and driving her hand into it's brain.

"Attention CSS teams in Arms Lab section 12," Administrator Purina Popjoy's voice broadcasted over the Cirrus Station Security squad's communication radios, her message being delivered to the appropriate parties with the help of each squad's respective Savtech assistants. Purina spoke quickly and with urgency, this feeling translated to her serious words and demeanor. "Further research into snow quahhg behavior has revealed that there is a good chance all abducted personnel might possibly still be alive; snow quahhg hunt and keep their prey alive, maiming them and depositing them in a den of their own designation. However, it is not uncommon for snow quahhg to kill potential threats to themselves. Keep on the look-out for possible injured personnel, and be careful when engaging the enemy!"

---

Squad 54 would have to travel far before the combat found them. As the four of them neared a bank of snow leading towards the eastern corridor, sudden movements from beneath the powdery white caught their attention. For their squad leader, however, he was at the head of the formation and at the front of the team... meaning what time the others had to react, he would only have a fraction of.

Quick sideways swipes shot out at the feet of Kumiko, Amber and their captain. The Squad 54 captain was immediately grasped at one ankle, yet another juvenile quahhg burst from its hiding place in the snow, shaking a layer of frost from its back as its legs attempted to grasp the rest of the squad in its clutches.

---

With Kokuten's back against a wall, the shots fired from his VW burst from the barrel in white flashes of hot blue plasma. The quahhg leaped as anticipated; those legs, coiling downward like eight springs, launched the creature forward towards Kokuten, its fangs bared and its maw open. The plamsa collided with the quahhgs lower body, a shot to the shoulder as well as one of the front legs, but this did not stop the beast's momentum towards Kokuten.

As luck would have it, however, the captain was no longer in the path of the quahhgs pounce. In mid leap, Kokuten would feel himself being quickly tugged to his left and around the edge of the pipe's entrance, only to hear and feel the resounding THUD of the quahhgs connection with the outside. The beast began to roll around on the ground in angry thrashing motions, most likely its response to intense pain felt through the areas where it had been shot. This continued for a while.

There were two Cirrus Station workers there on both sides of Kokuten, easily identifiable as two of the ones who were taken alongside the Head Administrator earlier. One of them had a streak of crimson blood running down the side of his face from a gash atop his scalp, and the other was holding his arms, the limb motionless and dangling at the man's side. The one with both of his hands raised a single finger to his mouth with a firm, if a little frightened, look on his face, signifying silence. He then pointed to the other end of the pipe; from their position they could see the entrance to the next cylinder in line as he motioned for them to move, moving to assist Kokuten if needed. The other man with the damaged arm wasn't in much of a position to help, nodding to his coworker before slowly sneaking his way towards that direction.

---

Tweak's bound over the enormous quahhg was intensely followed by the beast itself, it's black eyes swiveling and head turning as it followed the neko's movements to the letter. Tweak's warning systems flared; it was not the tail that she was being warned about, but the entire body mass below her. A quick look down and she would instantly see why.

The adult quahhg, instead of attempting to swipe at the small CSS member's body with its thick weaponized tail, the quahhg itself lurched down for a split second, pressing its body to the ground. Then, in one swift, practiced movement, the beast made a short jump upward, pressing its muscular legs on one side harder than the other, causing its body to perform a mid-air barrel roll, the four legs on one side of its body extending with its talons stretching wide in a net of lethal limbs. Tweak's just put her too close to react. The front claw connected with Tweak's torso, the huge taloned feet swiping at her, sending her sailing back towards the very wall she had bounded off of. Tweak hit the wall... hard.

George watched all of this unfold from his position, his eyes widened as he realized Tweak wouldn't be able to dodge such a quick counterattack. The man's surprise turned to sudden sour determination; he abandoned attempting to open the crate, but with his weapon still missing he had little to combat the beast with. George did what he could; the man scooped up a handful of snow as his steps crunched atop the snow layer, compressing it hard between his cupped hands and, with a little time to wind up and aim, sent the ball sailing towards the quahhg while yelling to get its attention. "HEY! HEEEEEEEY! OVER HERE!"

For what it was worth, George had a good throwing arm. The quahhg was beginning to make a stop after it had splatted Tweak against the wall, the snowball hitting it squarely on the side of the face behind the last set of eyes. This was enough to garner its momentary attention, the beasts horned head and jet-black eyes turning towards George... with the body following as well. George suddenly realized that he really didn't have any plans beyond that, and he slowly, cautiously began to turn his body back around.

"... aw shit."

---

Blake's shot missed, as one might have expected. However, seeing it sail so close seemed to break Lenny out of his momentary disorientation. The big armored ID-SOL, still being dragged on his back by his leg, curled his head to his chest to get a better look at what was happening to him. Lenny, unfortunately, didn't have very much time to react before his quahhg captor had reached the mouth of the dug-out snow burrow, disappearing from sight. Lenny's only reaction was his voice, broadcasted from the radio in his helmet. "Uh oh."

---

Serra's sudden show of strength was surprising, even to the quahhg about to make turn her into a hot wing dinner. When the beast found that he could not longer close its jaws due to the Elysian's arms locking them into place, the stick black prehensile tongue shot out and hit Serra in the face just as she thrust her other arm into the roof of its mouth, the knobbed end of the tongue splattering against her helmet and upper torso.

The intruding armored hand would find that the roof of the quahhgs mouth was surprisingly tender. Serra's hand, given the force she put into it, easily pierced the layer of flesh lining the top of the mouth, a torrent of dull orange liquid pouring from the wound and running down her arm. Unfortunately, Serra had not accomplished what she had intended; although she was able to reach into the head, the area she chose to intrude was not within reach of the creatures brain case. Never the less, the sudden pain within its mouth cause the quahhg to instantly let go of Serra, dropping her on the snow while its tongue retracted back into its mouth, leaving behind no small amount of ichor plastered on her CSS suit.

The quahhg continued to run past her, shrill whines and screeches erupting from its bleeding maw. The tail of the quahhg, the hardened, callous knob at the end weaving menacingly behind it, swung side to side as it stampeded. Serra would find herself in the path of it, the mace-like ending skimming along the snow towards her with potentially lethal force.

Kokuten let out a short yelp of surprise as he was tugged around the side as he was assisted to his feet by one of the very people they came down to save. His glowing eyes looked up at the two men before he got his own balance back. With all the tossing and pulling around going on, it felt as a bell was ringing constantly inside of his head. He placed his hand on the edge of the pipe, just as his eyes caught their gestures to advance to the other end of the pipe.

"Kess, Mimi." reported Kokuten behind the sound-shielded helmet, though his beating breaths and heart made it difficult to talk, "I've located two of the workers..." A quick breath, "Judging by what Admin-Popjoy has been saying, I think we've--," A short curse as he took a step, feeling the pain shoot up his side, "-- we've found their nesting place. The third worker and Cassefin herself may be near-by."

The Plasma rounds were strong, but their weapons were still too small to take killing effect on these beasts. As Kokuten limp-ran behind the two other men he clamped his rifle to his backpack's magnetic hangars. Then, he pinched the environmentally sealed material on his left palm with his right hand and pulled.

Tp tp tp tp SNAP! went the material as it broke, revealing the glowing blue circuit under the tattered palm. He discarded this material before pulling his rifle of the hangar and replacing his plasma canister with a fresh one, blue fumes kicking off the receiver as it loosed away. With the canister in place, he silently ordered the workers to hold when they got to the other end of the pipe.

He made a quick, sweeping turn around the corner to get his rifle aimed at the once downed Quahhg, to see if it was still down. If so, he was going to cover his allies until they got to the next pipe, if not... He'd be on the lookout.

Kumiko's reflexes, honed by several years of frontline combat at the high speeds natural to Yamatai's power armors, kicked in as she came under attack, though her body wasn't quite up to snuff compared to a power armor. She threw herself backward and away from the perceived threat, holding her fire until she could actually tell what she was shooting at, and where everyone else was.

"Lenny, keep in touch!" Blake shouted. He was already picking up a firm sprint towards the snow bank, reloading the plasma canister mid-stride. Perhaps temporarily forgetting the foolishness of such an act, Blake set his sights on the hole in the snow where Lenny had disappeared and made for it like Nell Sarahs was behind him with a runny nose.

"I'm coming after you!"

Amber's reaction the the claw coming from the snow to ensnare Kumiko was a quick downward shot from her weapon, discharging up what she had hoped would be close enough to the creature's head to stun it from such a close range. Though as she caught sight of the secondary crawling it's way out of the snow she forced herself into a knee jerk reaction of firing a second and third shot before swinging her weapon up towards the next threat.

At the very least she hoped to stun the beast on Kumiko and put something between her and the potentially approaching juvenile quick enough to allow their fellow squadmate a chance to react and drive it back.

"This does not look good." Was all she could quip.

Once the two Cirrus lift workers had reached the edge of the pipe, they both looked back to Kokuten to see if he was with them. They nodded to each other, the first once making a mad dash towards the second pipe across the small expanse of snow. Outside of their cylinder, the trashing and wailing sounds the juvenile quahhg had been making had suddenly ceased, replaced with a dreary silence mixed with the sound of cold air softly billowing in from the ends of their shelter. When the man had hobbled his way across safely, he knelt down at the entrance and waved for the others to follow, peering around the ends for any signs of the quahhg. The man with the mangled arm looked back at Kokuten once more, giving him a short nod before standing up and making a break for the pipe as well.

He didn't get far. In a short matter of moments just as he left the safety of the pipe, the wide jaws of their predator swept him up from above the pipe. The man was able to let out a muffled cry of surprise before he was carried out of sight, the other lift worker stumbling back and staring wide-eyed from across the expanse.

---

While their captain wasn't so quick to react, Kumiko and Amber were far enough away from the beast that their attempts at dodging its lethal swipe were successful. Squad 54's captain, however, wasn't so fortunate; the snow quahhg had him grasped in its clutches, his struggles and protests fruitless. After it realized that its surprise ambush was not as successful as it had intended, the beast gave a short, cautionary snarl, its black eyes twisting around. The sudden combined fire of both Amber and Kumiko, however, quickly put the creature back on the defensive. The hot plasma seared the flesh at multiple points on its body, causing it to stumble slightly before it crouched and leaped over the CSS members, sailing overhead and landing against the wall above the damaged bulkhead doors they had just entered.

The quahhg attached to the wall with relative ease, grasping at whatever it could find with its seven free taloned claws. One it was secured, the beast would quickly begin scaling the wall upwards towards the tall ceiling, Squad 54's captain still in its clutches.

---

As Blake reached the entrance to the quahhgs sunken snow cavern, he wouldn't be able to see too far inside of the mouth. The thick layer of snow above it made sure very little light permeated through, however he would noticed that the ambient lights on his CSS would provide him with a small degree of light.

At the moment, there was no sign of Lenny, nor did he respond to Blake's call.

Kokuten gagged a moment on his own thoughts as he saw one of the people snatched up right before his eyes. The soldier growled, before stepping out, with a fresh plasma canister loaded. He stumbled out into the open, turning his rifle up and around the corner, wildly hunting for the quahhg that had been running off with the man.

That's good to kn--

The talons could cleave steel. Steel, though, was heavy and inertial-resistant, Tweak was not.

The 'Spacer neko twisted as she saw the creature pull off its impressive acrobatics (it was like seeing a shuttlecraft perform ballet, all it needed was a tutu) and realized the tail was not what she should have focused on. Unable to evade while caught in mid-leap (one disadvantage to not having a more recent neko body), Tweak absorbed as much of the talons' impact as she could, giving to the strike instead of resisting, and letting her low mass help negate most of the damage. But the claw still bit into her side through the suit, and "giving" only made the impact with the wall unavoidable. Tweak hit hard, knocking the breath out of her and leaving the engineer stunned for a second or two. Normally that would allow a devastating opening in her defenses, but then she heard a voice through her daze.

George...idiot... He was trying to help her. But, the quahhg...

Internal damage...repairs initiating, forty-three-percent efficiency.

...Get up, Tweak, just get up. Get UP!

Kumiko's combat training and experience had left her with enough presence of mind to keep track of the creature's action as it changed directions again. As a result, she rolled out of her dive up into a crouch, facing back towards the quahhg, and firing as fast as she accurately could. Based on how fast these things were, she was guessing she didn't want to stay still longer than she absolutely had to, so as soon as she'd fired a couple times, she was moving again, still mentally doing her best to keep track of everyone. "Watch your back, pay attention to where you are, these things are FAST!"

Serra dived to the side, using a flap of her wings to give her a boost and let her clear the Quahhg's tail. Tucking into a roll, The elysian eventually got to her feet. Raising a hand to her still slobber covered face plate, she looked around.

"This is Evangelle, can I get a status report from all active Squad 36 members?" She asked while focusing on the beat that was fleeing from her.

"Morris here," Blake chimed in on the open band, "I'm going into one of the nests after Lenny. Can you see the Captain from where you are, Miss Evangelle? I'm not sure what our standing orders are, things being as they are."

As he delivered his status report, Blake plodded deeper into the darkness, sticking his free arm out to feel for approaching walls. His gun was still held firmly against a shoulder.

Nervoulsy, he called again into his radio for Lenny, "Lenny, can you still hear me? Which way does it feel like you went?"

The quahhg was still above Kokuten, perched on top of the pipe. The CSS captain was able to catch but a glimpse of the beast rearing its head back and jerking it several times, with no visible signs of the previously captured dockworker other than a grotesque display of red blood smeared across the quahhg's snout. The creature caught sight of Kokuten just as it have finished devouring the unfortunate soul, its black eyes turning into his direction and its mouth opening, releasing a familiar, guttural growl of displeasure at his presence. Its legs began coiling downward once more, the beasts body turning towards Kokuten as it prepared for a second leap, its hunger apparently not yet sated.

The survivor of the duo took the opportunity to quickly turn around and hobble towards the opposite end of the pipe, the quahhgs attention on Kokuten for the moment.

---

The distance between George and the giant quahhg gave the small Nepleslian man a slight advantage in distance, but if Tweak's recent chase was any indication, running away was only a temporary solution. Unfortunately, running away was the only conceivable action George felt he could take; without a weapon or a means of protection, his choices were limited. Turning on his heel and quickly trudging through the snow, he began to frantically flee in the opposite direction, the enormous beast lumbering after him.

He would have patted himself on the back for his commendable bravery, but he was much too scared for his life to think of his chances with the ladies. "TWEAK!" George yelled through the chilling air, his gasping voice accompanied by sharp clicks and strange yelps from the larger quahhg barreling after him. Without his helmet, George had no real way of receiving Tweak's reply, only hoping that she was tough enough to have survived that blow he had seen her take just second earlier. "TWEAK! CRATE! OPEN THE CRATE!"

George must have been referring to the medium-sized waist-high storage crate that Tweak had ordered him to open while she engaged the beast. He had little luck with opening the container; the design was meant to be accompanied by a special electronic tool to open the secure crate, not by hand.

---

Kumiko's shots mostly went wild, the distance between the barrel of her weapon and the quahhg growing wider with every passing second. However, but a stroke of luck, one of the plasma bolts fired from her weapon collided with the front limb of the beast at the joint. The quahhg screeched in pain, recoiling instantly from the searing pain the plasma bolt had instilled. The immediate recoil caused the beast to slip as it crawled along the roof above Kumiko and the rest, the weight of the creatures body also causing the other limbs to lose purchase on the already sketchy climbing surface of the ceiling. As a result Kumiko would see the quahhg, her squad leader still grasped in its clutches, plummet towards them, limbs flailing in futility at the air as he fell.

---

Serra's aggressor continued to charge onward for several meters as she watched. After a minute, however, the beast seemed to slow its pace, its body and legs beginning to lean to one side as it decelerated. Before long it inevitably stumbled on itself, hitting the snow-covered floor with a pwoof, sending a soft blanket of snow into the air as it came to rest.

---

Surprisingly, Blake's question was answered this time. Lenny's voice, although still sounding a bit confused, called back to Blake through the radio. "Uh... straight? I don't know, it dropped me a ways in. I can't see anythin'..."

Lenny's answer didn't help Blake with his upcoming dilemma, however. The lights on his CSS suit allowed him slight vision of the path ahead. The middle of the snowy tunnel began to split, forming two separate paths of equal size to the left and right.

Richard entered the room shortly after the others and was glad he had done so given what he would've walked into. He stood the near the entrance and waited for the quahhg holding his captain to land while tracking it with his variable weapon. "Go for its sides and I'll take the front!" he shouted. Once the beast hit the floor he'd begin to fire on it while carefully trying to avoid hitting any of his fellow squad members and aiming for its eyes should its literal front be presented to him.

"Control, it's time to stop fucking around up there!" growled Kokuten into his comm when he saw the mess of the worker's entrails on the Quahhg's face. The Captain reflexively tensed at the sight of blood, his own Nepleslian blood pumping within him. His shoulder tensed, and began building charge in the generator in his shoulder. "We need support now! We've lost one of the workers and my squad is tied down under heavy close-quarters!"

The Captain noticed the beast's attention turning back to him, seeing the disdain in its eyes. With seeing it rearing up like it did, Kokuten put his electric circuit arm to full charge, working up a voltage high enough to strain the capacitor. He turned his head back to the worker moving in the tube.

"Get to cover!" yelled Kokuten to the injured man, his voice crackling over the external speakers, before turning his attention back to the beast. He resolved to use his V-W in one hand, knowing his strong arm could take the weight. That, and touching the rifle might've expended the charge in his left arm. He had to do this just right, or he'd share the workers fate.

He aimed the weapon at the approaching beast and unloaded plasma injected slag, whilst electricity began to arc dangerously off his palm.

Shaking her head, Tweak forced herself up. Once her breath returned, it was only moments before she was up and mobile again as the eldest quahhg turned to chase this new prey.

MoonMan said:
"TWEAK! CRATE! OPEN THE CRATE!"
It was tempting to try to grab the creature's tail as it swept by when it turned toward George. She could climb it, stabbing it with the spikes she had just under her skin, waiting to be used. The way the mission had gone so far, though, Tweak figured she would be more likely to find the creature's hide impervious to piercing, or it would get rid of her and continue after George...

Tweak hurried toward the crate, again rebounding off the wall to cover a large part of the distance faster than she could have run it on the slick, snow-covered floor of the bay. In the seconds that it took to cover the remaining distance, she hailed Kess again. "Kess, what are in the crates here? We need weapons!"
