RP: YSS Miharu Final Mission: The Battle For Yamatai

Things moved too fast for Nyton to worry over Nimura's fate back in the hangar. AIES could update him later or if she called out. Right now he and Tom were aboard a hostile ship with their mission goal in sight. Upon seeing the soldier fall back Nyton raised his shield and charged his attacker. With the shield out in front he flew towards his enemy intending to crash through her and inside the ship.

"Sweep through them Tom! We charge them with everything we got!" Nyton shouted.

"Affirmative!"

Tom needed to act decisively, before the door behind them was shut and they were locked in a corner of the ship or, worse, jettisoned into space. He followed in Nyton's wake, sweeping for enemies with his two Impalers before trying to make sense of where they were and where they needed to go.

As long as they had the element of surprise, they could do extreme damage. As soon as he found his bearings, he continued his rush.

A glance at the situation only caused the Warrant Officer to frown as she decided the more direct approach was necessary to defend the Mokuren. After all, once the LAMIA squad had returned, the ship would be protected. So It would be no problem for Masako to go on an offensive to keep the Battlepods from launching their torpedoes. With Weapons Pods set to Support Fire, Masako coaxed her Mindy’s CFS to jump her closer to the BattlePods.

It was dangerous to go solo, even with Weapons Pods for Support, but Masako felt the risk was necessary as she fired her GM-02 at one of the Torpedo-ladened Battlepods before strafing to her port erratically. She didn’t want to become a target herself.

There was a red haze across her helmet; a fine mist began to gush into the air.

There was a jolt, and then Yuzuki was aware again.

The floor was slick with what looked like blood - a faint wispy steam rose off of it, out of it. Yuzuki's Mindy informed her that it was over a hundred degrees celsius, which explained the mist coming from the hemosynthetic fluid; her headlong flight into the wall had busted a cooling coil. Rising, she scrambled for purchase, metal greaves slipping.

Her shield guttered into existence, and the Mindy's forearm saber vaporized the misting synthetics with a hiss where-ever it contacted, but it was a few seconds before she took her first step away from the person-sized dint she had made in the bulkhead - a few seconds where she could have died a hundred times, if anyone had attacked her.

Then, she took another one.

And another one.

And she was airborn, swerving around Rolf and the armor, locked in combat, looking for an opening to flank, putting herself between the Render and the equipment.

They were so close; to have it all ruined at that moment...

On the Tiamat, KAMI vault — Yuzuki-san と Rolf-san

The Render's claws raked empty air again and again, searching for whatever was harassing it. The blind movements made it difficult for Yuzuki to get close. The mecha was not fast on its feet, but its arms could move with startling speed. Worse were the claws growing longer and longer, eliminating space for her to maneuver.

Rolf was closer than close. One forearm blade he retracted in order to hang on to the damn berserker mecha as it swung its blocky body around. The other he raised up high and locked, with his armor's help, in order to slam it home.

It took a couple seconds to be sure he would hit it. In that time, the thing had turned around and now faced the vault with its arms still slashing and swinging behind it, trying to catch anything it could. A lump was going to form somewhere on Yuzuki's head, she was sure, but she was clear-minded enough to keep dodging the swings.

Rolf plunged the blade in right where his AIES told him to, then immediately yanked it back out. The Render brought its claws up to slam down on top of itself as all of its feet began to stomp in place. Rolf hurled himself backward in a curled trajectory, facing the claws coming down and just avoiding them banging against the top of the mecha.

Rolf kicked his legs toward his face and stuck a landing on them, skidding a bit along the floor and almost falling down. The brainslave had to be dead; the mecha had stopped moving. Yuzuki and Rolf brought up their aether forearm weapons and prepared to fire.

Their AIES-assisted sensors had a better idea — run. The mecha was going to explode! The blast was calculated to be powerful enough to slag the vault and cause significant damage to the deck they were on. The safest place was the bridge superstructure, but they had to hurry!

2.58, went the clock.

On the Marmatur, — Nyton と Tom

Nyton's rush meant he got to take a shot from the Neko's Impaler rifle. The glowing, finger-thin blue line impacted and dug into his shield, leaving a scarred, 2 mm deep pockmark in it. Nyton was going as fast as he safely thought he could, and that was more than enough to cause serious hurt to the Neko when he ran into her.

Nyton got less of her body and more of her upper torso and head. The collision made him tumble in air after hitting her, but his last visual of her confirmed he had snapped her neck and killed her. Nyton was able to control himself enough to softly land against the port bulkhead of the ship.

Tom followed behind, raising his rifles as he crouch-walked and looked down to see what was what. What he saw was a mostly space filled low with crates. Interspersed with those crates were four NMX infantrywomen. One already had her rifle up and fired; the shot caught him on his chest plate and left a mark, but his armor powered him through the impact. He took cover with the crates.

His AIES seamlessly connected to the wireless aiming system used on his own Impalers. Suddenly, his eyes were the muzzles of the guns, and he snapped them out so he was staring at the chests of two of the soldiers. His vision flashed with a brighter, whiter blue color than what he was used to with the LASR, but the effect was the same. Two soldiers fell, and Tom dipped down for cover.

The crates, he then realized, were soft cover at best, as blue beams crossed either side of him without skirting his armor. He popped up again, this time getting air to throw off their aims for just a brief second.

His armor did one better, easily hacking, overpowering and obliterating the aiming systems built into the Impaler guns of the remaining soldiers. Tom was good at reading body language, and he could see the terror in their reactions as their vision flickered back to their eyes instead of their rifles. The soldiers lived long enough to each see a flash from Tom's weapons. The engineer killed them with shots to their heads.

Tom came down and flew backward with his rear to Nyton, until he was in a good position to cover him.

Only one thing was in their way now — the door to the cockpit.

Outside the Mokuren — Masako-san

The Weapon Pods fired in time with the Juni's beam rifle, putting five shots at her targeted battlepod. The pod tried to pull right, but was caught by one of the Weapon Pods' shots. The white beam slashed through its port side, shearing it off and leaving it to spiral helplessly away from Yamatai.

Just as she was targeting the other, new orders came up — rush to the aft of the Tiamat's bridge superstructure, around the base, and search for Nimura. She was facing off against a Ravager mecha and needed help.

Masako's LAMIAs had returned to her side, and their beam rifles made a chandelier of white energy that crashed through the other battlepod, leading it to a soundless explosion. As Masako turned to her new objective, her sensors immediately fell on Nimura, who was outside the Tiamat about six kilometers away.

The Ravager was tracking her with machinegun fire.

"Oh fa'fucks sake! This sore son of a bitch juss' can't let us win!" growled Rolf loudly as his armor swung him around with a distal thruster blast, turning as quickly as he could. His boots sent off sparks in that forced turn, before his thrusters came to life and set his shields forward.

"C'mon 'Zuki, we gotta' get tha' fuck outta' 'ere!" said Rolf as he began blasting back the way he came, barreling over a bit of debris, and shaking up a bit before stabilizing and pushing on.

"No!"

And, Yuzuki stood her ground. There was no time to explain; not even telepathically. Dazed, mildly confused, forced to transition from the rush of combat into a cooler and more analytical mind, Yuzuki had no hope of piecing together a completely new approach on the spot. Her head hurt where she had struck the wall; her neck had been twisted and that ached, too. There was a tightness in her chest that she had to fight against just to breathe. She needed this vault in tact!

We've failed.

The realization was hard; so hard her mind rebelled, even as her body reacted. This was not a defeat that she could accept. Too much was at stake.

NO!

The decision was instant; too quick for words, and faster than fear.

It had been more than a minute since they had entered the Tiamat.

Instead of running from the blast, Yuzuki tackled the Render, latching on, straining the limits of the armor to drag it airborn with her. That would spare the vault; that would allow them to seize control of the ship.

Of course, it occurred suddenly to Yuzuki that she wouldn't be the one doing it, anymore. It would need to be Tom. No, she realized, he was too far away.

It would have to be Rolf, wouldn't it? Briefly, she wondered if he knew what he was doing, but the controls were simple enough weren't they? That was about the only thought she would have time for.

Then, she picked a spot that would hopefully be outside of the Tiamat, and disappeared with a shock and a bang, leaving behind only empty smoke, washed in red trouble lights, and the spectral wail of klaxons.

"'Zuki!?" Rolf yelped as he front-flipped in the air to blast himself into reverse and turned to look only to see his suicidal winggirl latching onto the Render! No no no! He was not going to lose someone else to some suicidal gesture of heroism! Sure, Yamatai was at stake, the lives of it's citizens were in their hands. Though, these were the wrong hands, as Rolf cared little about Yamatai as a whole. That rock they called a homeland wasn't what had his blood pumping in that moment.

"Fuck!" he yelled as his boot touched down to spring him forth towards the Neko, with the assistance of his thrusters. "Y'crazy gear-head bitch!" snarled the soldier as he reached forth to grab her, snatch her off, and drag her away, as futile as it was to try and reach her in time.

Tom ignored the blows, then ignored the terror he saw in the eyes of his fallen enemies. There wasn't time to think about the lives he was extinguishing, what kind of people they were and how they probably didn't deserve such an ignoble death.

There was a door in front of him, and he had to find a way to get through it.

"I'm on it!"

The engineer took a moment to investigate the door, to check for any sort of protective traps that needed to be disarmed. Nothing would be worse than to end their final push with a premature explosion.

On the Marmatur, — Nyton と Tom

The entrance before Tom looked benign — he detected no explosives, no tripwires, no computerized or other mechanical traps.

The door actually two doors that came together. They were made of Durandium, about 7 centimeters thick and with sturdy pressure seals all around the frame, making it a good makeshift airlock in case the large main cabin had to have its atmosphere jettisoned. The door itself was maybe 2.5 meters tall and perhaps that wide. Big enough for an old-school Mishhu to enter, but not big enough for an NMX.

There was a small hole off to the right of the door, maybe 5 centimeters in diameter and 15 centimeters deep. Tom's AIES examined it when he bent down and identified what looked like laser scanners inside. A tentacle reader, he thought.

There was no obvious way to activate it; a Neko had no way to even make it work, let alone a power armored Yamataian. Shooting it was an option, but what would that do besides lock up the door? He assumed their target was wise enough to make violence the wrong choice. Tom had no explosives on him anyway. His two weapons eventually could put peanut-sized holes through the door, but that would be slow going that would take more than just the two weapons he had.

An idea ticked in his head as he looked down at the Impalers — they were particle-beam weapons, meaning they carried charged gas inside them as well as energy. Explosive gas and energy packs. And there were several more littering the deck from the soldiers he killed. It was a bit risky, but they certainly would blast a hell of a hole in the door.

Outside the Tiamat — Yuzuki-san と Rolf-san

Black.

Yuzuki was faced with it. Endless black, with more depth and less noise than any sleep. Her HUD's displays were what told her she wasn't dead, along with the various pains in her head and body. She was far from dead, which probably was the only thing that could have been more black than space.

Where she found herself now.

She flexed her gauntlet-covered fingers. A second had passed. Then another. Then more still. Many more seconds than should have passed.

She was supposed to be dead. The Render was supposed to have detonated in her hands, scorched her armor right off of her body, thrown her tumbling through the void while she lost consciousness from decompression. Or atomized her outright. Maybe send her into the planet's surface to be burned up like a meteorite? She flexed her fingers again.

No Render. No bomb. No death. No victory.

Just Rolf, clinging to her leg, a little stunned himself at what the "crazy gear-headed bitch" had done. Yuzuki could imagine the stream of expletives from his mouth. They weren't very kind.

Her armor gave her a view of the Mokuren, which was about 20 kilometers away from the back of her head. It was within 7 kilometers of the Tiamat as it bore down on Yamatai, a blushing blue-and-white jewel radiating against the background. Dozens of ships were hopelessly battering the dull grey dagger of the NMX command ship with every weapon they safely could deploy.

2:37, went the clock. 2:36. 2:35. 2:34.

It stopped.

Yuzuki might have miserably stared it down, but the numbers went green.

Her HUD told her why: the Tiamat's CFS system was flickering, shorting, snapping in and out of existence. Yuzuki's internal clock told her the system finally collapsed at 2:21.

The clock disappeared and was replaced with Yukari's face.

"It is down," she said, face tight. "Yuumis, switch to graviton beams. Yuis, destroy its thrusters. Spare no munition! We must sufficiently slow its descent that it will not damage the planet."

The fleet responded. Battleships closed even tighter around the massive vessel that no longer was firing back. A small counter popped up on Yuzuki's and Rolf's HUDs, showing them the speed of the Tiamat at about 8,600 meters per second. The speed started to tick downward as ships rushed around the vessel and blasted it with their tow beams, dragging it toward the reverse direction.

The speed it needed to reach was 100 m/s.

Separately, Yukari's face and voice appeared for Rolf and Yuzuki. She telepathically spoke to them through their AIES.

"Nimura-san is engaging a Ravager-class frame. Kurohoshi-Juni is en route to assist with a squad of LAMIA armors. Engage the enemy and save Nimura!"

Rolf's fingers had gotten to her in time, all needed to do was pull back, remove her from the damned Render and then...

... ask why her was staring into the vast darkness of space.

Despite the sudden surprise, the counter was still going down in his HUD. So, he looked frantically at the Render, which was not there. Then, he looked back at the ship, highlighted by his AIES, which was still there. A sense of relief poured over himself, knowing that in some way, another sprite was tucked away from those sacrificial claws of death. Though, when the CFS went down, Rolf was reminded thoroughly of his rage, and balled up one of his armored fists.

The Tiamat was slowed, and their orders were given, but Rolf had something to take care of.

"You brainless shit-head'!" roared Rolf, striking Yuzuki across the face of her helmet before snatching her up by her armored collar. He shook her a few times. "Listen up. We. Are. Soldia's. Not heroes. Not fuckin' steppin' stones t'ensure a mission's success, capiche!?" He shook her again, before coming off with a sterner tone, "I'm not gonna' to let ya die like that. Not like Mara."

He tightened his grip on her as his teleport unit began to power up, Nimura's location being loaded into his interface. Another shake indicated he wasn't done speaking to her, either.

"So, if you even try t'pull 'dat shit again, I'll lay you out like a pile a'bricks!"

It wasn't the best plan, but it was the only plan that would work with the supplies they had. Things would have been a lot easier with one of the Mindy armors, but Tom had to make do with what he was given.

He knew that they didn't have a lot of time, so he moved as swiftly as possible to collect the discarded Impalers. As the Nyton watched--he knew the Taii wouldn't be much help in this situation--he removed the batteries from a few of the guns and formed a tight circle with them, using some tape to fasten them in place and make a door charge.

He needed to angle the explosion inward, to concentrate each batteries' collective power at one point instead of spreading it around and wasting the one shot they had. Hopefully, the door would be blown open enough for them to bust through.

"Get back! I'm blowing the door!"

Though her armor tried to warn her, the first strike took her completely by surprise. Yuzuki was shaken around like a rag doll; an armored rag doll, but a rag doll none the less. Her head hurt. A lot. She was alive, but that was confusing, and she'd barely had time to understand the gravity of what she had just done - but Rolf was hardly complacent, and dutiful in reminding her. After a moment of futile struggling, she slumped her shoulders and let Rolf manhandle her.

Had she been about to die? It hardly seemed possible. Nevertheless, it was the truth; after the fact came the fear.

She shivered, all strength stolen, as it sank in that she could have been well and truely dead. Objectively speaking she would have saved the entire planet and a lot of effort; they could have seized control of the Tiamat completely. Now, it was going to smash into the planet, even slowed. More people would die.

Because of...

"You!"

In a sudden surge of violent energy, she grabbed hold of Rolf's collar, much as he had grabbed hold of hers. With no weapon to hand, both were free; she pounded on his flank.

"It's going to crash into the planet! You could have had complete control of that ship! You could have stopped it from inside! You could have even turned it on the other ships!"

She knee'd him savagely for emphasis.

"You just had to save me! Damn it! Damn it! Stupid!"

Rolf howled in anger. The shock to his armor and the pumping blood in his veins turning on the beast inside of him. Something merciless.

"You retard! The planet? The planet!?" he struck her helmet with his with a savage headbutt. "FUCK THAT PLANET! Do you even get it!? You would'a died a meaningless fuckin' death you fuckin' civvie sprite cock whore shit bitch dick AUGHRGH!" The absolute rage consuming the man was getting to be too much. Yuzuki could feel herself rattling in his hands, having first witness to Rolf losing his cool and whatever else he had. Luckily his teleport had warmed up to the stage where they could both move in to support Nimura.

He clunked his helmet against hers again.

"You're a black fuckin' knight."

Clunk

"START ACTING LIKE ONE!"

After that, he began to degenerate in a humming chant of curses and hate as their teleporter lit up the darkness to steal them away.

Nyton took some cover while preparing himself to open fire on the occupant inside. Whatever poked it's head would find it perforated by his LASR. "Do it Tom!" he said and braced to shoot.

With Mokuren defended, for now, Masako concentrated on the next assignment. Though the assignment had a more personal meaning for the Warrant Officer as she noted who needed support. Thoughts of Mara and Ichigo came to Masako as the Raven-haired Nekovalkyrja activated sped towards her comrade. Bringing up her GM-02 rifle, the Warrant Officer took aim at the Ravager and fired in the hopes of distracting the machine.

”Continue Evasive,” Masako ordered Nimura while firing.

The head-butts dazed Yuzuki briefly, compounding her injuries to the point where she could feel, literally feel, her spine grinding together. It hurt abominably.

"That's our planet!" she managed before the transition took them, her words laden with hatred and venom, and angry tears. "You're a coward!"

And somehow, she made it sound worse than all of Rolf's swearing put together.

Outside the Tiamat — Rolf-san と Yuzuki-san と Masako-san

The two Black Knights who had been squabbling were deposited within a kilometer of a heated battle. There was no blackness before them now; instead, the Tiamat's massive blue engines were squared against the backdrop of Yamatai, with an occasional pop of debris from points along the vessel's surface.

Their HUDs pinpointed where each target and friendly was, though two were easy to see. Nimura was ducking and weaving as she flew in circles and figure-8s to try and avoid the hulking Ravager's two Gatling guns. One of her forearm shields already was down, but her armor only had suffered minor damage along her left leg. She was down her more-advanced Type 29 beam rifle, leaving her with the older GM-02. The Ravager had its shields almost at full, and topical visuals showed its armor had yet to be scored.

Masako's bolt hit the shields of the Ravager and didn't do much to hurt it, but it did show something the three armored soldiers had not known — the shields were a CFS-type, as the beam hit the Ravager on its right shoulder and turned into a half-spherical sheet of energy that flashed over the upper half of the mecha and ended on the left side. The frame turned its attention to Masako in time to catch a faceful of aether blasts from the LAMIAs. It held firm to its plot of space and unloaded with its Gatling guns, which scattered the LAMIAs and Masako.

Yuzuki was out of countermeasure missiles and had only her forearm weapons — which at that moment had enough power to function. Rolf had missiles left, but his forearm weapons had 30 more seconds to charge, as he had teleported them to that space.

"FIGHT EACH OTHER LESS, FIGHT THE ENEMY MORE!" Nimura's voice shouted at them as she circled near them.

The Ravager turned its guns on the pair, seeing easy targets that could be a threat later. From a distance of about 1.2 kilometers, it fired a long burst.

On the Marmatur, — Nyton と Tom

Tom watched his bombs go off.

They didn't explode in a big shower of energy and heat that would set things on fire. Nor did they produce blinding flashes sure to stun the enemies inside. Instead, the charges popped into bluish cauliflowers of intense energy, each maybe half a meter in diameter, and stayed that way for a couple seconds.

Tom had spaced the explosives far enough apart that the bursts took out almost the entire door, but not how he had planned — the ammunition packs had eliminated only the material of the door within its contained radius. A ridged circle as wide as the doorframe, but not as tall, was taken out of the door. A concave-edged, flying disc-sized button landed on the floor with a loud clang! when the bursts disappeared.

When Tom and Nyton jumped up with weapons drawn, they saw a Mishhuvurthyar working at controls with his myriad tentacles. He was strange looking in the sense that he did not quite look a classic Mishhuvurthyar should, with a smooth pink shell and elongated ears, though he was close to that. Tom and Nyton knew what those were like from their time on the Mikomi.

The Mishhu didn't turn from his console, but his voice entered both of their minds. Their PSCs adjusted it to a tolerable volume first.

"I had expected Yui to send Nekovalkyrja," he said.

Suddenly, they were in another fine situation, with Nimura, the resident combat ace, going toe to toe with a Mech. What was it with sprites and trying to solo mecha in combat? He understood a good scraping challenge, but this was too much dodging and lumping around for his taste. Enemies like this were much more fun to fight in a team effort, as the odds were more level that way. Though, for some reason, it felt wrong to be so concerned by such matters.

Perhaps the whole meaning of the conflict in itself was lost on the Malifarian.

At any rate, Rolf's AIES linked up with Nimura's providing him with her vision of the Ravager. His anger subsided enough for him to focus on the situation. The boiling water between Yuzuki and himself would have to wait until later, when they didn't have this bastard weighing down on them.

With a quick motion he loosed his finger and pushed Yuzuki away from him before he fired upward in a quick thrust. His leg pod meanwhile released four missiles, two veering off just somewhat, flares. The other two bent off toward a wall before bulleting down towards the Ravager, popping holes into its shields, SSDMs.

"Try not t'blow y'self up on it t'save us all 'Zuki!" mocked the pilot as he curled around, reacquiring his target in his AIES.

Strafing away from the fire, Masako took aim once more at the Ravager. However, she didn't fire immediately. Holding her fire, the Warrant Officer waited for Ash -- no -- Rolf's missiles to do their job before firing upon the Machine.

"Suppressive fire," she ordered her LAMIA.
