A buffer slide, like the bolt carrier and buffer spring piston system in a gas-blowback firearm


Just mount it on sliding rails, with a shock absorber behind it.

That's what DARPA found to be the best thing in their railgun experiments for the SDI.

Otherwise, you'd probably be changing the rails after every shot.
